POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Hi Team! Excuse the vocabulary, but I wanted to be sure everyone knew I wasn't talking about passing the gas they use during surgery. I had surgery yesterday around 1pm and haven't slept a wink since I woke up from surgery. It's 6am now and I've been up all night. I'm just in too much pain to fall asleep! I've been wanting to fart since I came out of surgery, but haven't had one yet. It's like my digestive tract never woke up from surgery. I've read that most people are tooting immediately after surgery. Is this normal? How long until you cut the cheese after your surgery? What can I do? I'm seeing the surgeon in about 6 hours. Is there anything h…

My biggest issue post surgical with my routine and my "normal" day is and has been my one weakness...my morning latte. I normally make a espresso shot, and pour it into 1.5 cups of steamed skim milk. I've tried four different ways of adding protein powder to this and have thrown out every single one...they were awful. So I ask, is it okay for us to drink "coffee". I haven't started on my mushy food phase yet, but LORD I can tell you that my liquid phase has DEFINITELY been a downer without my morning latte ? Thoughts?

Hello Everyone, Its been about 5 days since my Gastric Sleeve surgery. Not sure if i drank to much of my shake or not. Im getting this building pain from gut up my chest (also feel tightness in back) and slow goes away when it reaches my throat and it feels like a gas pain not sure if anyone else experienced this. Comes in goes last only a few seconds. Quick update noticed i forgot to take my Meotoclopramide today think this is reason.

Any ideas on how to make hiccups stop? Im 2 and a half weeks post op. I had hiccups for 40 mins this afternoon in the middle of eating some ricotta cheese. Finally got them to go away. A few hours later and they are back again. Didnt drink or eat anything for an hour prior. I'm occupying as I type.

  5. I have struggled with my weight since I was five years old. Late in 2016- at 28 years old at my heaviest weight- I had my first appointment with a bariatric surgeon in Akron, Ohio where I live and began the steps towards gastric bypass. I was so scared. But I knew that I would rather risk my life than live like this forever. I feared that my parents would bury me in 20 years and that my sister would become an only child. I knew I had to do something. I had tried everything. Between the ages of 8-28 I had tried everything under the sun. I could not lose/maintain the weight loss. On June 26, 2017- I had gastric bypass surgery. I have lost/maintained 180 pound weight los…

I am 8 days post op and I have been steadily losing weight since but all of a sudden I have stopped and even gained weight. I am following the diet properly and walking everyday so I don’t understand. I feel defeated and like something is wrong. Advice please?

  10. Does anyone have any issues with constipation at 2wks post op? I have taken Miralax but no avail! Any other suggestions?

  11. I had gastric bypass June 26, 2017. I’ve lost 180 pounds and maintained my weight loss. I’ve decided to share my journey with the world. I share recipes, grocery hauls, what I keep on hand in my kitchen, Q & As, and many more things related to my journey. I also have a blog where I share recipes. Come join me! This journey is much easier with support of those who have been in your shoes! My Instagram name is Maddie5088 - I also have a public Facebook page called Mornings with Maddie.

  12. As coronavirus dominates the headlines, being prepared is one of the best things you can do to ease worries stemming from uncertainty. While there is a lot that people at home are not in control of, one thing you can control is how well prepared you are. The BariatricPal Store has some items to consider stocking up on to make sure you get enough protein and vitamins to stick to your weight loss diet should you be stuck at home avoiding COVID-19, or temporarily quarantined. Protein Shakes and Juices Getting the protein you need is easy with protein shakes, powders, juices, and smoothies. Just mix them with water - that is one thing that is still projected to be f…

  13. Kinda wanted to see if there are Other people who are struggling to see the weight loss because we have a larger frame. I’m 5 foot 10 and I have like a large bone structure and even though I went from 256 pounds before surgery and now I’m 189 I don’t see a change in clothes or a change much elsewhere only like my shoulder and thighs. Anyone else like this?

  14. What a ride this journey has been. I never thought I would ever get this far and definitely not this quickly. I have worked so hard though; was super strict on myself from day 1; I feel that is just my nature; it's either 110% or its nothing.. go hard or go home!!! So one morning I just decided this is the day I'm going to start my diet and change my life. I had spent the past 15+ years of my life helping everyone else in my family and ignoring my own health issues mental and physical.. I researched the surgery options and trawled this website for months whilst waiting for my surgery to happen. I found a great doctor and surgeon and he agreed with me…

I am 15 days post op and decided to ride my bike a little with my dog running beside me. It lasted about 20 mins. How long after surgery were you guys released to excercise? I was exhausted afterward but it was such fun. Just curious about others experiences.

  17. Started by KS Mermaid,

I had my 1st post op Dr visit today. Dr was excited that I was averaging 1.3lb loss a day . I've got one more week of liquids then I can do pureed. But I have been released to go back to my desk job! Start back on Monday. Looking forward to that. Here's my question, I feel that I swell up or retain alot of gas at the end of the day. My chicken and beef broth seems to bloat me up but I crave savory taste by the end of the day. Does any else experience this? Does walking relieve this or just exhaust me to the point that I dont notice?

  18. Okay I managed to make it through the 'green nausea' phase, and the extreme GERD phase, but starting last night the gurgling in my intestines started and I pretty much spent the night in the bathroom with the "floopy poops". What on EARTH could be in me that is causing so much distress? The cramps are so painful...I finally took Immodium last night, but the same thing started up again this evening around 5pm. Is this normal????

  19. Started by AuriAngel,

I've been having trouble hitting my protein goals so I started incorporating shakes again into my diet. I used to get GNC lean 25 shakes but recently tried Premier Protein shakes and really liked the flavor and they're slightly cheaper so Im thinking to switch to them. Does anyone else use them to supplement their diet and have weight loss with them?

I have an important business dinner to attend at an Italian restaurant. My concern is that I want to hide the fact that I will barely be eating anything on my plate. I don't want to appear rude, and don't want to say that I'm sick, I just want to push the food around my plate so it looks like I ate it. Any suggestions on what to order so it's easy to camouflage that I'm only eating a few bites?

Feeling full is so different to me now. I can't tell if I'm full, lol. So today is day 1 of soft foods for me (cottage cheese, string cheese, eggs, etc). Tonight I had for dinner 1/4 cup cottage cheese and 2 slices of a peach (cut up into triangles). Feeling full is so different. It doesn't feel like it used to. I don't even know if I'm full, but I got a weird pain in my sternum close to being done, so I stopped. I think this is my new full? Anyone else think it feels different after the sleeve?

I’m sorry I didn’t know how to title this but for food wise is it normal to be at 1/2 cup to a little more like 5 ounces of food for a meal at 4 months out? How much are you guys taking in and how many months out.

I swear I'm not marketing anything, I just had this amazing idea. Maybe it's not so amazing, I'd just love feedback because this is something I'm struggling with. Tuesday will be 3 weeks since my surgery. I've struggled keeping things down and knowing when I'm "full". I noticed there is nothing that is 3-4oz (the size of my stomach) on the shelves. Lots of waste. Especially like frozen food that's healthy and convenient. Would any of you ever be interested in frozen meals that are approx. The size of your stomach that would be healthy, delicious and convenient? I'm just curious if I'm onto something or if there would even be a market for this? Delete if …

  24. Hello, I’m 3 days post op. I was sleeved 3/3. I am able to drink Water, broth and Protein Drinks with no problems at all. I don’t get full. I don’t get uncomfortable. I’m def trying to still sip but find myself drinking water like I did before surgery—not gulping but def not sipping. And I have not lost any weight, I’ve actually gained a couple of pounds since surgery. I’m kinda devastated by this. Does this mean the pouch was made too big or it failed? I’m so scared. I don’t know what to do. Does any of this sound normal? I’ve been watching all the week one post op videos and people are talking about how it was so miserable but they are down like 16 pounds. Now, da…

  25. Now 10 months post op and down 109lbs from my peak. Calories are edging higher now in the 1200-1600 range. With respect to meals my brain feels totally retrained on how much to eat. My challenges are sugar and slider food which is extremely calorie dense but not offering the same restriction. Below is my weekly chart to give everyone a sense of what the rate of loss looks like. Still not exercising as much as I should which is the last thing hindering my progress. I am quite good at making excuses not to do actual exercise and much prefer things activity based.

I’m almost 2 weeks out from a DS SIPS revision surgery. I’m on a full liquid diet for 1 more day then I move to the blended diet (mushies I guess). I’m super hungry. I’m down 22 lbs from the week before surgery preop diet so I’m vwry happy but did not expect to be this hungry. Should I be this hungry at this point? What about the ghrelin factor? Or is that not really a thing? I get plenty of water and some broth in as well in a day. Any advise or insight?

Hi everyone, just wondering if anybody else out there has had very cold hands and feet after their surgeries? I had a RNYGB Feb. 13, and have managed to take all my vitamins and iron, but seem to have frozen hands and feet since then. I am down 32 pounds since Jan. 29. Can anybody shed some light on this? Am I anemic? I have a followup with my surgeon next Wednesday. I will be sure to bring it up but would appreciate your comments and info. Thanks.

I'm about 10 weeks out and last night was the first time I had a bad interaction with food. I don't know if I ate too fast, ate too much or my stomach just didn't like what I ate but wow, I felt terrible. Immediate heartburn then a stomach ache and chills for about 2 hours. I'll definitely be more careful about what and how I ate for a while.

Hello all, New here. I’m 3 days postop of my gastric sleeve and I keep getting this breathtaking pain on the top of my left shoulder. I know it’s normal to have gas pain there, but has anyone else experienced it taking your breath away?

Before surgery my hair was beautiful and long and thick. I knew hair loss was a side effect but so much falls out now at a time. I take biotin but I feel it’s not doing anything. The picture I posted is after brushing it out. Can somebody recommend a good vitamin or anything that will help me ? :(

Maybe I’m crazy but I have one more week on protein shakes until I’m in the soft foods stage but I’m kinda freaking out because I have not had solid food for 10 days! What if it hurts to eat? What if my weight loss slows down? What if I DON’T feel full like I’m supposed to? Has anyone else experienced these thoughts? How was it for you when you could actually eat again?

  40. I'm really struggling with the decision to move ahead with surgery or not. Here's what I don't understand. How are you not destroying your metabolism by only eating 750 calories a day? Will you never be able to eat regularly again for risk of packing on the pounds? I did the HCG diet years ago (it's terrible. Never ever do it) In a nutshell... you gave yourself a shot every day that kept your body from realizing that it was being starved and then ate about 750 calories a day while your body worked hard to function as usual. The weight dropped off. I lost quickly over about 3 months and then stopped the injections and slowly eased back into a regular diet of about…

I am only eating the minimum (ex. 10oz bone broth, 36oz water, 1 sugar free popsicle 1 sugar free jello and 10oz apple juice) I feel like I’m hungry and I feel like I’ve already failed! How can you possibly GAIN? Total regret has set in ?

I’m on the soft foods stage and I’m starting to get terrible indigestion. It’s like I can feel it going down and then it burns a little in my throat and chest. Is this normal? I’m not eating fast at all. It also doesn’t help that these protein shakes are making me nauseous :-(. I pray this gets better because it is super annoying!

I’m Day 8 post-op today for the past few nights I’ve had terrible left shoulder pains. It seems to go away during the day but comes back with a vengeance at night time. It was so bad last night I felt it whilst dreaming and dreamed I was having shoulder surgery. Weird. I’ve been researching and it seems it could be a gas pain left over or signs of a leak. I have no other gas pains left than this one crampy shoulder and don’t feel terrible like a leak, but how how would I really know if it was a leak? Thankfully I have a follow up today with my surgeon. It hurts so bad!

Ok, so here is a question for everyone...i had my sleeve surgery done Nov.1, 2019. Ever since, not sure if it is weather related or not, but, since i have been eating foods after the surgery i sneeze, like between 3 to 5 times. I dont sneeze during any other part of the day, just after i eat. I have heard about getting the hiccups, but not sneezing. Any other sneezers out there?

  47. Today is day 4, so I got to start on my protein shakes and soups. Today was so much easier compared to say 1, every day has gotten better and better. It sounds silly but now I'm worried it will be too easy and not work. Has anyone else felt this way?

  48. Started by TIB,

I am in my 5th week of post op. I feel great, but I am struggling with taking my multivitamins. The chewable makes me nauseous and I am not a medicine taker so taking 4 was a bit much. I tried the drink (2xs daily) and the taste was appalling. Is there a 1 per day biatric multivitamins that includes everything? I have had thick hair all my life and it is starting to get thin and smooth clear skin in which I am starting to get pimples. Not too noticeable but I notice. How do I strengthen my hair and clear my skin back up. What is the best all included biatric multivitamin?

Hi all. It has been a while since I have posted on the forum. In 2004 I got a Lap-Band put in. It lasted about ten years until complications forced me to get it removed. After that, due to scar tissue fusing my liver and diaphragm to my stomach, I had managed to retain most of the weight loss, but four or so years ago, something changed, and I slowly gained all my weight back. So this year, 2/25/2020, I got the Gastric Sleeve surgery. I am 12 days post-op. My doctor has me on a chopped diet of meats and cooked veggies, cottage cheese, and boiled eggs (and other stuff). My question is, how do I intake 90 grams of protein per day that the dietician said I should h…
