POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Isabelmonster,

Sooo girl talk I have always had heavy periods like super flow with the mess and junk stuff and I wanted to know from your personal experience how has your period changed since the surgery? With the extra weight gone have you had less of a period or did it go back to normal if you had a irregular? I’m sorry if this question is like super abnormal but I figured since we have had the surgery it’s a good one to ask if not my apologies.

  2. So I’m on day 15 post op and still doing liquids. Mostly water, ice chips, popsicles, and protein shakes. I don’t have any hunger and no desire to try to swallow anything tougher than a frozen popsicle. However, I’ve discovered this weird fascination with food tasting videos on YouTube. I don’t want the food, but for some reason it satisfies a part of my brain. I’ve been in bed rest and these short vids are just the trick. Trigger Warning: totally non appropriate food for bariatric patients. ? Here are some fun ones: https://youtu.be/d9A0i5gpMAQ https://youtu.be/UC5KKlj7TAo https://youtu.be/seCkuD77dnY https://youtu.be/SHCeP5ozZi4 …

I had surgery Nov 1, 2019 and was hungry for food when I woke up is this normal.

  4. Well its that time of the week for my weekly check in. Today is 19 weeks I've been on this weight loss journey. I have to say my weight loss has slowed down too.. now it seems to take a few days to see any movements. I have started adding more real foods into my diet like tuna and mash potato which might explain things. It seems that it will take hard work to break into the 100s. As of today I'm sitting at 202lbs; I'm really hoping to get under 200 soon and eventually get to like 185 If possible I have ordered a decent rowing machine which I should get in a few weeks so that should help to move those last 20lbs as well as tighten up my belly…

  5. Started by Jkm2019,

Has anyone used Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier? What are your thoughts on this product? Pros and Cons please. I am thinking of using this to help keep me hydrated as it is hard to get all my liquids in right now.

Before I go any further, I have a message in at my surgeon's nurse line and I have an appointment next week. Hi! I am a little over a month from my sleeve and one of my incisions (not one of them that should be imo lol) has pus in it and leaking out of it a little. It has been the slowest to heal and is still pretty red around the outside. It hurts a little, more than my other incisions for sure (which are all basically just scars now), but it's not crazy. Has anyone had this happen? What will they do for me?

  7. Started by Jkm2019,

50#’s Down! I started losing weight by prepping meals back in April 2019 when I topped out at 375#. Then I had the sleeve surgery on Dec. 31st. It’s been a week since my surgery now and this morning I weighed 325#’s!!! Praise God!

  8. Started by Jenni L,

My laparoscopic RYN surgery is scheduled for February and I’ve been thinking about what it will be like post surgery. I would love to hear your perspectives on the topics below: Did you have a drainage tube or catheter in the hospital? Did you have to go home with a drainage tube? Were you able to sleep on your stomach when you came home? If no, how long was it until you could? I’ve heard people recommend having a pillow for your stomach? Does that help if your surgery was laparoscopic? And last but not least...is there anything you wish you would have known about what you would experience after surgery. I appreciate any feedback you …

  9. Hey there everyone hope you had a great Xmas and new years. I'm glad to be in 2020 and I know this year will be amazing. Well I'm hovering around 203-204 the last couple days now.. I've started to notice it takes longer to see movement on the scales like it may take a few days to see any major change and it's hard to get my head around after losing weight so quickly until now... My question is for those who have reached their goal weight and healthy BMIs... I would like to get down to at least 185lbs but it seems these last 20lbs are going to be the hardest... Can anyone share their experiences how they dealt with the last 20lbs? Is there any…

  10. Started by loridee11,

So excited, today I am 50 lbs down from when I started the entire journey. 41.6 of that was pre-surgery and the last 8 has been since surgery a week ago. Crazy to think how far I still have to go, but for today, celebrating where I am at! Lori

  11. Started by Slimming Down Steve,

Is there anyone that could share an example of what is looked at on your lab work after a RNY bypass. Don't know if it is just Calcium, and different vitamins, exc.... My primary care physician has a full lab in his practice. He said if he knew what labs are drawn for then he will taylor it for me every 90 days and it won't cost anything through my insurance company. But if I have labs drawn anywheres else will cost me handsomely.

Im done my ops on 2/1. I'm a hardcore smoker. 4 days after surgery, I smoke half stick and felt stomach ache. Is it the signs to stop smoking? LOL

  13. Hello friends! Just wondering if there is a good method besides buying a ninja with a vacuum setup. Thank you for your replies.

  14. Started by mirmir,

First time posting...and trying to calm myself down that I haven’t screwed this up already. I had my bypass 13 days ago, and have been feeling AMAZING. Today, though, I made two mistakes- I picked up the kitchenaid blender to put it away (waaay too heavy) and felt a little soreness. It went away after a while and then for dinner my family was having pizza. I had a very small portion of the ricotta cheese from a calzone, but there was a little mozzarella mixed in. I chewed super well but tummy didn’t like it. I threw up a little and have had a sore abdomen all evening. It’s been about 4 hours and my abdomen/stomach is still sore and tender to the left of my belly button, b…

  15. I’m three weeks out. I followed my plan to a T post op, excluding the turkey chili that I for some reason thought had no tomatoes (no tomatoes until March because acidic). My family has done absolutely little to support me during the holidays. They forced me to sit down at watch them eat steaks on Christmas, they go to the movies and buy the largest popcorn and Coke combos, they’ve made three pans of brownies in four days... Meanwhile they move my food to the back of the fridge or throw it out of the pantry because “it takes up too much space.” I eat something on my plan and they accuse me of cheating. I didn’t expect a lot of support but it sucks so hard. …

  16. Started by SlimChickadee,

So, tomorrow I will be 4weeks post-op. I have been experiencing what I believe is a rectocele. I have a bulge in my vaginal wall that I can press and then evacuate me poop! I have an appointment Wednesday for my 2nd post op visit and want to inform my surgeon about it! Embarrassing to talk about but it is rather worrisome on my part! Not wanting any more surgeries! Has anyone had the surgery to correct this or are you just taking it one day at a time?

  17. Started by Jkm2019,

Hello, I had my sleeve surgery on 12/31. I’m 5 days post op and still haven’t had a bowel movement. I’m taking Lactulose, but no go. Has anyone else had this problem?

I had sleeve in September 2016 and lost 130 pounds. I’ve regained 50, and half of that was just in the past two months. I’m recommitting to a low calorie diet, and I’m wondering if that’s sufficient given how severe weight loss screws up your metabolism. Has anyone who has regained had success with losing weight again?

  20. Started by lys,

So I had my surgery on 12/30. Since then I have been walking and keeping up on my fluid intake. I’m in pain. Standing up straight is nearly impossible because it feels like I’m pulling at my incisions. Bending over is also impossible so it’s really hard to dress. My belly is also swollen. Is all of this normal? I just want to read others experiences so I stop being so discouraged. I have lived an active life and it is killing me that I can’t even walk a mile right now.

  21. I'm not quite a year out but I'm worried about how much I can eat now. I sort of 'accidentally" ate an entire pb&j sandwich, although I did feel overly full afterwards. I am wondering how much you can eat at one time around the ONE YEAR mark. Could you eat a taco bell burrito Supreme? Could you eat a hamburger with the bun? with one bun? with no bun? Could you eat 1 or 2 pieces of buttered toast? could you eat an egg McMuffin? I did just have an upper GI and they said nothing is stretched out and everything looks normal but I hear so much about regain and people struggling and I am worried about how much more Im going to be able to eat g…

  22. Hello. I am 8 days post-OP and I've weighed myself once. I had a 20lb loss, which is incredible. Any thoughts on how often I should weigh in? Does it matter?

  23. Started by Libby63,

I’ve never been a fan of fish unless it is extremely mild. I am in the mushy foods stage and it is tasting better to me than it did pre-surgery. My question though is how to prepare and store. My local market gets fresh fish daily but I can only eat a small amount. It gets too strong for me if I cook it and save the leftovers. Would I be better off buying frozen? That has always been too strong for me in the past. I’d like to encourage myself in this direction but it feels like such a waste now throwing most of it out.

I don't feel like I'm losing much weight.. others said they "notice" a difference.. but I can't tell at all.. which is rather discouraging.. I had my surgery on 11/15/19.. does losing weight hit some kind of peak a few weeks out and then start up again..or ?? Ahhh[emoji17]

Gastric sleeve Surgery was 12/16/19 have been doing great but tonight is no good. No bowel movement for 2 days (still on liquids) taking vitamins but stopped the dulco.... pills ( stool softener). Started today but I am trying to have a movement but no success and it’s starting to hurt should I go to Er or try to wait it out as much as I can take ?

I was sleeved 11/18/19, 2 weeks after surgery I was totally fine but now I’m nauseas, dizzy, can’t eat for almost 3 weeks. I explained this to my surgeon but he just says to drink water. I am in bed most of the time I’m awake, I have zero energy, my eyes are constantly dizzy and I’m worried. I went to the ER & they said it was a UTI. I can’t keep anything down and honestly feel like my body is shutting down. Idk who to talk to or what to do :’( I’m starting to think it’s my gallbladder but I am not to sure. Anybody have advice ?

  27. Started by Isabelmonster,

I dont know if I’m messing up. My nutritionist said I should be around 500-700 calories in food which I’m in between but I still haven’t started the gym and I’m scared I might be eating to much for 2 months post op. I haven’t really started the gym because I’m at physical therapy for three days out the week and working the other four and I don’t know if I should hop to it and just get the membership because I’m scared of the increase in calories I might not end up losing anymore weight or I might stall. I know it’s probably nonsense me asking but do you guys think I should start the gym anyways or cut back on calories?

  28. More great advice from Dr. Duc C. Vuong regarding hair loss after weight loss surgery.

I've seen a lot of people using retinol for scars. Does anyone has any recommendations on what exactly they use ? Thanks !! Happy New Year to everyone as well!!

Hello! I had my gastric bypass three weeks ago tomorrow- all of the incision are scabbed over and healing beautifully but one (this biggest one) is still occasionally oozing the bloody stuff that was in the drain. Should I be concerned? It’s just a few drops a day, There is no swelling, redness or pain. It’s a little uncomfortable and hard at times but I think it’s the location (moves a lot when I’m sitting/standing).

My incisions are healed... But they're sensitive and so they hurt sometimes and idk why ?!?! And does anyone have any suggestions on treating the scarring to have them fade?? Thanks !

Hi , I was "sleeved" 4 months ago , 29th August. So far I've lost around 56-58 pounds. Since beginning I couldnt walk to much or exercise cause of the pain in the right side - where liver amd gallbladder are. Talked to my surgeon and did some bloodwork - everything seemed normal. Surgeon suggested to stay of working out and just walk. Last 2 weeks I had intens pain so I ended up doing an ultrasound to se what the hell is wrong.Of course gallbladder stones were to blame and there wasn't any surprise there. Another thing poped up - I suddenly have a hemangioma on my liver that wasn't there before surgery. It is 4 x 3 cm . I'm scheduled to remove gallbladder in one month.…

Hi all. I am now home from the hospital. I was told by the surgeon that surgery was successful. I am asking to please give me your feedback on what I am physically feeling. I am on clear-diet, but am feeling some heartburn even when I try to eat diet free Jello or drink a clear protein. Also, my stomach is semi-upset all day, a bit nauseous. I have started walking, but feel I need to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes for #1 or #2 although all is liquid. Just wondering if anyone else felt these symptoms after 3 1/2 days post-surgery? Maybe I am doing something wrong. Oh and even the thought of drinking broth is grossing me out. I pray things get better, but I would appre…

I wanted to know if you can eat Cereal and milk after you've completed all phases and are eating regular foods? I'm asking because it's a rule not to eat and drink within the same timeframe. I love cereal and I just wanted to know if this is allowed. Thanks for any suggestions. Sent from my VS990 using the BariatricPal App

We all transform amazingly from any type of WLS ..but I just love to see the amazing transformations of men , they seem to lose so much more drastically, The problem is they seem to be less forthcoming with pics...Sooo if you are male and has had weight loss changes in your appearance from ANY wls let the ladies see what you got going on... Don't be shy...have at it....

I tried searching for this and found nothing so I suppose I will ask. I am able to, with some contorting, to clean myself after a BM. I can't imagine being able to do that after surgery for a while. I am short and big, 5'2" and 314 currently, and carry most my weight in my stomach area. Please tell me I won't need someone to assist me doing *that* after surgery. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi everyone, I had my initial surgery 10 years ago. I lost 98 lbs and it brought my 5'6" frame to a svelte 156.00 lbs. I was looking and feeling great. Then I started to get sick and was passing out about 2 years post-op. I found out my lapband had slipped and I went in for a revision. Again 3 years later I had to have another revision. After that time I gained weight and leveled at 180 lbs. I didn't like the number but with exercise I looked okay and felt good, so I was okay with it. Push forward 4 years and I have gained another 25 lbs and now weight 205 lbs. I have tracked my food intake for one-full year and I average 1100 calories per day. So how in the h…

I just got the bill for my 6 month labs - $998.00 !!!!!!! Turns out my BCBS insurance pays for the surgery, but not for any follow up appts, labs, or anything coded for obesity or overweight. I am going to try having my doc resubmit with a coding like "rule out nutritional deficiency" or "rule out malabsorption syndrome." My year labs are coming up in another month, and I sure don't want to get hit with yet another huge bill. Anyone else have this issue with insurance?

  45. Hope everyone has a great new years eve. Here in Australia we did new years eve last night it was great listening to music and stuff. It's currently January 1st 2020; felt I should do a weight check in today. Woke up today feeling good. Weigh in today 204lbs Thats 118lbs GONE. Feeling confident and that 2020 will be the best year ever. GW 185 ? thanks Mike

  46. I'm almost 8 weeks out . I was wondering if I should hit the gym now and if so should I up my calories and protein or anything? i'm getting in 80 grams of protein ,64 oz or more of water and 800-900 calories some days and 500-700 some days. I want to continue to lose and I want to build mass so I can prevent some sagging skin.... please advise ,,,,,

  47. Hey everyone! Happy (almost) New Year. I know we all have goals and mine is to get to my goal (even if it takes more than the year 2020). I pinched a nerve in my neck but I'm walking and even doing some classes, but I can't lift weights yet because of that. I can't fathom it, with the pain, and even doing what I am doing can be tough sometimes. I've lost a LOT since July (most of it on my own, pre-surgery) and now I've hit my first real stall. I've added the exercise and I haven't cheated even once on the diet. I have been cleared to regular food as of yesterday. I am changing it up. I know I'm losing inches and I'm not a slave to the scale, but it wouldn't hurt to see th…

Hi Everyone! I was sleeved 23.08.19 but due to complications I have been in and out of hospital since. To resolve the complications, I had conversion to by pass surgery on 13.12.19. Surgery went well, I was discharged a few days later. However this time is completely different! After my sleeve, I was never hungry. This time round I am constantly hungry, I never feel full, I am craving solid food terribly and I am so emotional. I’ve also had more pain in my abdomen ( not the incisions but inside of that makes sense). Has anyone else had an experience like this? Or started food earlier? I was just thinking something like skips or breadsticks with hummus/cream cheese high …

So I went to the er and had a ct scan of my abdomen because of constipation. I ended up finding out that I have a mass in my liver and they don’t know if it’s veins or a fatty deposit. I will be going to my surgeon this week and my primary tomorrow. Has anyone had this happen? I’m kinda worried and don’t want to over think the worst about it.
