POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by jems,

I'm currently in a weird place. 6 years out from my gastric bypass, 33 weeks pregnant, and on a feeding (nj) tube because I have a peptic ulcer and stricture so bad that I cant even keep water down. This is my first time having a stricture diagnosis. From what I'm told it is one of the worst most of the doctors here have seen. They had to navigate a wire through the stricture first just so they could have a feeding tube get in to my intestine. Doctors are thinking a ballooning of the stricture wont work because there is a lot of scar tissue. Surgery/ revision was mentioned. Has anyone had a surgery to correct this issue before? What was the down time? I currently have to …

  2. Started by Krestel,

So im 6 months post surgery and doing really well. BUT every time ive been laying down and get up, I get really really dizzy. I usually have to sit in a chair a few steps away for about 30 seconds until my head evens out. Any ideas what this is? Is there anything that I can do about it?

  3. Started by SlimChickadee,

Had RNY Dec 10, 2019 and on pureed stage. Haven't had any issues until last night I cramped so bad like horrible contractions ladies! I took a couple of gas x and it calmed down a bit. I am taking protonix daily and my last BM was 2 days ago and I emptied out everything! So, again today I had pureed rotisserie chicken and about an hour later I had the excruciating stomach cramps but started throwing up which was just spit and it seemed to have calmed my cramping! I do have phenergan I can take but I am feeling better now! Wonder if it is the chicken due to that is the only thing I had yesterday and today both and it was dark meat I pureed. Any ideas of what is happening?…

  5. Just wondering. Oster Versa Pro is going to be delivered tomorrow.

  6. My wife has gastropareses and the surgeon who will be performing my RNY bypass has her medical records as of the 12/23. He thinks he might be able to get her approved for a RNY bypass. Just wondering if anyone else on here has had it performed for that reason and did it help?

  7. Started by Prestonandme,

I am five months post-op and have chronic sinusitis. I asked my surgeon if I could take Flonase (an inhaled corticosteroid) and he said I could. I was very concerned about potential weight gain but he simply told me to take the Flonase. Has anyone else post-surgery used inhaled or topical corticosteroids? If so, did you have any weight gain or other side effects?

I am about 2 1/2 months out and have lost 35lbs. 18 of the was lost by 2 weeks post op. I know I am not supposed to compare myself to others journey but it is becoming hard to not feel like a failure. If I didn’t start at such a high weight I don’t know if I would still feel the same. I did call the nutritionist and they just verified the basics...water, protein, exercise,etc.... and told me to track and maybe increase my food intake. Here are my stats: HW: 392 SW: 347 CW: 312 GW:180 I am trying to keep my mind from going to this negative place but getting so down on myself. In my head I would be below 300 by 3 months out and it looks like that is not going to ha…

I am seven months post up and have been sick on and off since November. I've had strep throat twice and now currently a sinus infection. I am a high school teacher and I know kids are always sick, but I just can't shake this. Anyone else in the same boat? Any extra vitamin supplements to strengthen my immune system? Thanks!

I had VSG in November 2017. I lost 121 lbs in 12 months following my surgery. I got pregnant in December of 2018 and it resulted in a miscarriage. However, I fell pregnant again not even 2 months after I miscarried and did not follow any specific nutrition while I was pregnant. I gained 40 lbs during my pregnancy and I lost 23 of them and want to lose the remaining and get back to my pre-pregnancy weight plus lose more to get back on track. What is the best and easiest way to get back to this and nix my bad eating/drinking habits??? I am suffering from postpartum depression too so I food has been a crutch for me ? please no rude comments as I’m trying to overcome the PPD …

Hello, this is not surgery related but any suggestions on girtles to hold my tummy in?. I know I will need skin removal but any suggestions now while I'm still loosing?.

  18. Well first of all hoping everyone had a decent Xmas Anyway looking at myself naked in the mirror noticed like my legs and arms and shoulder/neck area are skinny as&looking good but still need to lose some off my belly/chest area; like my legs are half the circumference they used to be and probably lost 1 shoe size. my arms are half the size as well and my neck/shoulders area showing the proper bones and muscles like a normal person and my face is skinny as well which I'm very happy about; I've dropped multiple shirt sizes as well it's just my belly area and breast that still has some fat/flab left to go and i think another 4 inches off my belly/w…

7 months out and down 100lbs (same as my 6 month update) but the inches are coming off. My size 38 jeans that I bought a month ago are too loose and Im into 36s for the first time since my senior year of high school. I can say my mind doesnt revolve around the surgery or weight loss like it did. Before I put any food or drink into my mouth I do have that immediate reminder. Occasionally my eyes are bigger than my stomach but the sleeve stops me. I have the occasional snacks here and there but I keep it in check and sizing is tiny. Still not exercising as much as I should and I continue to be frustrated with my self for failing at this. At this point I would be …

I’m literally sitting here sad. I’m sad because I can’t eat food. It sounds so dumb to me. But I’m literally MOURNING and I feel ungrateful because of it. I’m 3 days post op and I’m complaining. Is this normal??

  21. 1. Is this possible? 2. Should I call my surgeon? 3. Am I just a big baby? I'm not having attacks yet but I have this stitch in my side that showed up a few days before Christmas. I was actually feeling really good up until that point. Now I don't know what it is or if I should be concerned about this nagging pain?

  22. The nutritionist at my doctor's office is not particularly helpful. I was hoping that someone could give me some guidance as to how many ounces of food I should be eating at one time if I am four months out from a gastric sleeve? Does this amount change later on? If so, when? Thanks so much for any guidance!

I wish there was a pill we could take called "Stall-B-Gone"...I'm one month out from surgery and dropped 22 pounds the first three weeks. Now at the end of the fourth, I've lost none. NONE! I haven't cheated, I'm eating about 600 calories a day, and I know I'm burning something because my ketostix are still turning purple when I pee on them. I know this happens, but physiologically it seems impossible. I know I just have to wait it out, but it's soooooo frustrating! If you watch "My 600 Pound Life" you see these poor people who claims they haven't cheated, and Dr Nowzaradan rips them a new one and says "call the Nobel Committee you are creating mass from nothing". …

Hi all! Merry Xmas Eve if you celebrate. I had my gastric bypass on 12/20. My follow up material clearly states I can have sugar free pudding and yogurt 2-3 days after surgery. I am petrified to try anything other than the shakes water and broth. Can you provide insight on when you tried new foods and what was the worst reaction you had? All of my material seems to have not been cohesive and it seems all I talk to in my program have different guidelines to follow, so I’m nervous!

Things are going great! Was sleeved on 12/12. After surgery I came out of anesthesia coughing and was brought to the recovery room and then hospital room. It was very uncomfortable. Had gas from the laparoscopy in my back which made sleeping in the hospital bed HARD! Hooked up to machines, tossing and turning most of the time I was there. Surgery was around 10:30AM, I was up walking around 6pm. They gave me ice chips to eat the first night. The next morning they did the swallow and leak test. All was well so I got to try some broth, lemonade and a popsicle. Didn’t get a lot down but enough for them to let me out around 3pm that day. The first day was the hardest as I was …

Hi All, I've done my surgery early May 2019. That's been 7 months ago exactly today. Clogged/Plugged ears I've been experiencing some weird behavior with my ears past few months, I'm not sure whether my gastric sleeve surgery might be the reason. My ears tend to get clogged/plugged. Speaking is sometimes hard, and if I speak I can hear my own voice loud in my head, to the point where I have a hard time listening to what the other person said when they speak at the same time as I do. It's really starting to affect my daily life, due to working within Customer Services, since I'm interacting with customers all the time. I noticed this happens when m…

  34. Woo hoo it is officially Christmas here down under.. Summer here heading for 95 today.. I had a few days there with no changes on the scales I'm not sure why I guess it happens. Today I woke up and dropped 1.5lbs overnight and hit 210lbs today (95kgs); getting closer everyday to my end goal of 185-195 That's officially 112lbs gone good bye good riddance But I also wanted to wish all my international friends a very merry Xmas and happy new years. I managed to cook a soup/stew and ate a few tiny pieces of sausage meat and a few carrot pieces and that was it for my Xmas lunch..lol hopefully one day I'll be able to eat proper food; more than a …

Hi folks - I know about fat loss triggering higher estrogen levels, but I am now 20 days post-op and I have been on my period for 19 of those days, starting day 2 of post-op. Has this happened to anyone else?

  36. I was moved to purees end of week 2. I noticed that my stomach cramps at anything not liquid. After 10-15 minutes of cramping, it stops and I just feel full for an hour (and much happier). Is this typical? Doesn't matter what the puree is! I have an extremely difficult time burping and I think air may play a role here. Second, I can drink liquids without ever getting full. 8-10 oz an hour...maybe even more. I definitely get full on 3oz puree, but water or protein drink is simply this bottomless pit with no resistance. I accidentally gulped water after a walk out of habit, braced for the overflow, and found it went right on through anyway. Also typical…

Hey everyone, so I know that hair thinning is very normal (some even say inevitable) around 3-9 months post-op. However, I am already shedding hair more than normal. I asked my surgeons office and they said that tends to happen and to start taking Biotin. Im kinda freakin out here. I haven't heard anyone say they started hair thinning at two weeks post-op. I also asked about getting blood work done but they said they will not do that until 3 months post-op. Has anyone else experienced hair thinning or higher rates of shedding at only 2 weeks? Any suggestions? Any comforting word? P.S. Please understand that I have textured hair and Im mixed with African American. My…

Interested in hearing from anyone who's had hernia repair surgery after bypass or sleeve. Advice? Thoughts? I am 6 months post op rny and was just told that I have to have an abdominal hernia surgery next week! Im trying not to panic about another surgery and not being able to exercise for 6 weeks. I've lost almost 120 lbs and I'm proud of my workout routine, so I'm terrified about breaking my new habits. I have 20 lbs left to lose and I'm sick with the thought that I'll gain some of my weight back. Appreciate any insights y'all might have for me.

I'm 9 days out, and on the liquid diet. I am able to have an entire small can of Campbells healthy request tomato soup in one sitting. Adding one soup can of water and heat it up. I pour it into a large coffee cup and sip it down in 20-30min. No stomach distention. It seems odd, but could any of you stomach that much liquid?

Hello everyone, I have a couple questions about post surgery dietary restrictions. I am signed up for my surgery for March 17 and I am trying to get as informed as possible. I understand that there are phases of reintroducting solid foods and there are limits on what you can eat. But how do those restrictions work longterm? How about a year or two years after surgery? I know this is a lifestyle change but will someone reverse their progress if they have something sweet once in a blue moon (a year post surgery for example)? I have also heard that drinking soda stretches your stomach. Does this apply to all sugar foods? Ultimately, I am ready to make dietary changes b…

Uff-da! I am hurting! My doctor tells me most people don't feel this bad after. She ordered a radiological study to check for leaks and that was clear. I usually have a low pain threshold anyway. What was your experience? Although today it IS residing (and I get to go home from yhe hospital today) I have massive pain and spasm sensations when I drink anything. I've had awful heartburn. My sugars are up (175), but they told me they are not concerned about that. I was on Saxenda (Liraglutide) before surgery and don't plan to go back on it. Please share your experiences as I'm pretty discouraged. Thanks, Red

I was told I lost on my 14 day liver shrinking diet 10 lbs more pounds but my weight was at 254 today, I was so upset! That is like two pounds more than my last weigh in at the doctor's office! The doctor told me not to be alarmed that I was still swollen from the surgery and my legs were swollen as well and he was not concerned about it! It still bothered me, My scales showed a total of 248 but either way, I got home and programmed my scales to theirs and I have another follow-up appointment for January 8th. My question is there any problems with passing these stones? I didn't even know until I went to the toilet and felt the sensation.. Is there a reason for these stones? Is there something I need to do or change? I hope there's no problems? RNY POST OP
