POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by jasmineinmymind,

I'd like to know how you guys feel about having desert like foods. There are really 2 schools of thought: either "everything is OK in moderation" or you abstain 100% because sugar is an addiction. I am 9 months out and I'm still craving sweets despite having stopped all deserts. I dont eat protein bars, no cookies, pie, ice cream, frozen yogurt etc. I am wondering if there is any way I can put out the fire so to speak by allowing myself very small amounts of healthier sweets. I mean, this is for life right? I see a lot of keto deserts online and I wonder who has been able to eat these in moderation and still keep losing. I saw this recipe this morning and it looks am…

I just had surgery yesterday and I was released today. Every time that I take a sip of water I feel a sharp pain in my chest and then air bubbles but I can get the air to come out by burping or passing gas. Any suggestions? I know walking is good for it, but any OTHER Suggestions?

Just curious if any of you have gone to an IV bar to help with hydration. If so, how was your experience with it? I am tempted, but resistant lol. I know I am dehydrated, but not to the point of going to an urgent care. I feel like getting a 1 liter bag of IV fluids would make me feel so much better, but don't know if I am ready to jump right in with a place that isn't really a hospital/urgent care. I also don't like that they let the bags go in over an hour... although I am sure my kidneys/heart can handle it... I just prefer slow and steady.

I keep getting these hunger pains like the ones you get when you haven't eaten and it makes you really nauseous. What can i do for them. Im only at like 480 calories a day and 40 grams of protein. Im 1 month post op for the sleeve. I dont know what to do but take my nausea med.

Hey all coming up to 2 weeks left until surgery starting to think about the puree liquids stage.. What do people use post op because our portions will be so tiny I'm thinking a small stick blender or like a bullet or nutri ninja? The bullets have like different cups of 500ml plus where the stick has a small jug size? I know I'll have to puree pretty much everything I want to eat from eggs to meat to tuna or veggies to very fine consistency?! I can get a cheap stick mixer or nutri ninja like below What are people's opinion or experiences like which works better????

I wonder if I can get some advice. I'm 4 and a half months out of surgery and this month I am 17 days late getting my period. I have done pregnancy tests all negative and wonder if anyone else has experienced this? Is it normal? Any advice would be great?

I’m trying to rally round some more specific support for people that are Sleeve to RNY (either pre or post op RNY). Not sure the best way to do this. I did create a group.... anyone interested? It’s called “Revision Journey.” Anyone interested?

I haven’t had a bowel movement in 5 days. No pain. What did y’all use to help? Miralax hurts my belly.

  10. Started by ninago,

Hello everyone! I did my gastric bypass surgery last Monday (Oct 14th) and I'm feeling great despite the gas pains and some weakness from time to time. Last Friday I noticed that the area around one (and just one) of my stiches has turned kinda yellow. It doesn't hurt at all, but I was wondering if it's normal. My doctor told me to go to his office tomorrow and I got scared. What do you guys think? PS: Sorry about the bad English, I'm from Brazil and I'm still learning.

  11. Started by Brent701,

For those that are post op what temperature do you take your steaks now? I was a medium rare to medium just depending on the cut. Now a medium rare is too undercooked and leads to digestion hell for me. This weekend I had a 6oz filet cooked medium and the difference in digestion was substantial.

  12. What did you guys eat for your first “regular” good meal? I’m so excited but scared! Would low carb tortillas be okay?

  13. Started by Bridgette Polci,

I had surgery on September 9th I lost 20lbs. But now it seems like I'm not loosing any weight. I went to a doctor's appointment today and gained 5 pounds. I've been doing exactly what I'm supposed to, haven't cheated. I'm feeling like this didn't work for me. Please can anyone help me figure out if this is normal, did it also happen to anyone else? I'm trying not to compare, but it's really hard.

Im 5 days post surgery and so far healing ok. Just discomfort across top wound and slight pain in shoulder. The thing im struggling with the most is interpreting the "sensations" in my stomach - i have slight pain in my stomach and my brain is going "you've got hunger pains, your hungry eats some toast!" ....so i have a drink of 125ml across 30mins and i end up burping (my dieticians notes say to increase fluid intake to 125ml in one sitting at this stage...but whats one sitting in time???) ..burping : which is exactly what i used to do if i overate pre surgery. Its such a mind game of rediscovering body signals!!! Im so worried ill stretch the sleeve!

Hi all. I’m 2 days out and doing pretty well. My nerve block wore off so I’m quite sore getting up and down but that is doable. Now my questions With each sip my stomach sound like an alien is in there...normal? What is the minimum amount of liquids that must be consumed to avoid dehydration? Thanks

Hey ya'll, So I'm definitely noticing changes in my body. One think I didn't expect... When standing up straight, there's a little roll under each side of my booty that is definitely not full of anything anymore. Anyone else have that? And exercises that can specifically help that besides squats? Thanks!

  19. Started by Montage,

Hi all, sorry for the nasty question, but I feel I need to know if I should contact the doc or not. I seem to be having pale or clay colored poops lately and doing some research it seems that this can be caused by not enough Bile in the digestive tract. Could also be Gallstones, or medications. Anyone else have this problem? Should I contact my Surgeon? Or should I just wait a day or two?

I recently had my 1 month check up and it turns out i went from 270 to 230lbs. Is that a decent amount? Is that too much? Im in a bit of a stall now I actually gained a few pounds and im really scared I'm messing up big time somehow. My nurse just reminded me to drink more water. Is there anything else I should be doing?

  22. So I’m 5 weeks out and I noticed some days, even though I eat the same thing... I’ll get horrible pain in my back and burp then I end up throwing up then I’m fine. Anyone else experience this. I don’t think I’m eating too much. I measure out my food. Anyone else have that?

My surgery was 5 mths ago. Since then I have left a relationship, started a new job, fallen in love, and started a new relationship. I went from completely miserable to the happiest I've ever been. It didn't take long before my new boyfriend saw how filling up on food really hurts me and he's become even more conscientious of my eating than I am sometimes... Same with my daughter.... My point is I have full support surrounding me. I feel, however, that I have stretched my pouch in the last month. I'm able to eat a good amount of food compared to what I could eat a mth ago. I can even eat foods that I wasn't able to eat. I haven't lost weight or inches in 3 or 4 weeks. I'm…

I have already posted about my issue with hiccups that started on Fri just prior to 3 weeks out and what they told me to do. Well, yesterday was my first whole day back on liquids and I restarted the carafate on Mon. Well, not only do I still have the hiccup issue, yesterday I had the most horrific chest pain. The only reason I didn't totally freak out is I knew the pain was GERD related but it was much worse than anything I ever had pre-surgery. Feels like I can't swallow at times as well. I called this morning and got an appt for this afternoon but I am wondering has anyone else experienced something like this?

  25. Started by Renee Harris,

I had (Gastric sleeve) surgery 8 or 9 years ago. At first I lost a great deal of weight and then slowly gain it all back. But my question I keep getting pain and discomfort in the upper left part of my stomach. I also sometimes get a slight burying sensation through my whole stomach area. And I have also noticed a hard lump under my skin in that same area. I am not sure if this has something to do with the surgery or just something else. I was wondering if anyone had an insight to this. I plan to see my regular Dr. soon. Also wondering if anyone else have started gaining weight years after surgery. I am interested in your thoughts.

I had RNY WLS on 10.1.19 8AM so I am 4 days out. I want to document my journey in one thread to help keep me accountable along the way?. My stats: Highest weight ever: 390 HW at WLS journey: 375 SW: 347 CW: 341 The first day of surgery was pretty rough for me due to nausea and pain. I am pretty sure it was just caused by anesthesia though since I have always been super sensitive to it. By day 2 at 10am I snapped out of it and the nausea stopped the pain was tolerable at that point. I have been able to get around pretty well now, way better than what I felt after my gallbladder surgery 6 months a ago. Still low energy and trying to eat has been weird right now.…

I’m about 5 weeks out and have been getting weird burning pains in my throat. I’m on meds for GERD already and they don’t seem to make a difference. The burning is getting super annoying and I can’t fell if it’s gas, indigestion, gerd or what. If I eat when it’s bad it just makes me want to throw up. suggestions?

  28. Started by kys_journey,

Super weird question. But has anyone ever NOT felt all the side affects from Sleeve surgery? I had VSG done Monday 10/07/19 I feel minimal pain from my Incisions unless I lay wrong or try to pick something heavy up. I’m not hungry really ever, have yet to feel Nauseous or overly full. I feel a small difference when I drink too fast but that’s it. I’m kinda scared that things are going to well that I will then experience all of the side effects at once.

Since I have had my SURGERY, an RNY on September 5th, 2018 my Blood Pressure has become on the low side. In Fact I am hard- pressed to have a Reading of over 100. As an example, I had cause to have it taken just this morning- 95/ 60- I expected my weight to diminish- but my BP too? Am I c9ncerned about absolutely nothing? And yes I'm not dehydrated- I do keep my fluids up.

My 1 year followup appointment is next week, so I had lab work done today in advance of that. The test results are auto-released to an online portal and I was looking through them (I don't think they've even been reviewed by a doc yet) and most of it looks good but my WBC has dropped. Dramatically. Like by half and is on the cutoff for being outside normal lab values. So what causes WBC to drop, I wonder? Cancer... don't have that. Autoimmune disorders... don't have any of those. Viral infection... nope, I'm fine. Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies... crap. This is a possibility for someone like me. In looking at other labs, there are a couple other markers …

Hi all Immediately after my surgery (like as soon as I woke up), I had sharp, intense pain in my left shoulder. This pain continued through the time in the hospital. Everyone said it was gas pain. It would move up near my neck and back to my shoulder. And it came and went in bursts. After leaving the hospital it was extremely reduced to just a small, occasional discomfort. However, it’s been three weeks and I still get it a few times a day. My doctor said this type of pain is associated with the drain that was placed while in the hospital and seemed not concerned. He said it was only important to acknowledge if it was happening after eating, as that could…

Hi y'all, I am having a lap band removed and an RNY done as one procedure. I live about 5 hours away by car from where the surgery is being done--how difficult do you think the trip home will be? Is it even possible? I guess I could stay in a hotel a few days after discharge but that gets expensive...I know I need to ask the surgeon this but I was hoping for some input from those of y'all that have been through this already. Thanks!

OK, some of you know I've adjusted my macros to follow my dr's plan instead of doing my own version which is much lower carb. Basically he has me eating way more carbs a day than I was comfortable with but the carbs are the 'low or lower glycemic impacting' ones. That being said, while it has helped the scale move down a bit...it is like I will go for let's say...8 to 10 days weighing about the same..maybe inching up or down by less than a lb. Then I will drop 2 or 3 lbs. I get leery of updating my 'progress' as I'm still distrustful that the next day or 2 the scale won't just 'jump up' again.. Since I have increased my carbs, I have noticed a direct increase…

Hey everyone ! I was sleeved this past Tuesday 9/24 and I have an odd question. Was anyone scared to transition into their purée and then soft mushy food phases. Today has been the first day it’s been easier for me to get my water and protein down without being in total discomfort ( I know to be expected) but my doctor said starting Friday or Saturday I can slowly start transitioning into puréed food. I don’t know why the thought of actually eating real food even if it’s puréed scares me a little. I don’t want to hurt my new sleeve & I don’t know why I feel like Friday or Saturday is not that far out from my surgery. Anyone else start this phase that quickly? And if …

I'm grateful for this tool but it has turned me off from food altogether. I think all the changes has lead by body to boycott me. I want nothing when I eat I feel instant nausea. I decided to work on hydration. So at nearly 6 weeks post-op I'm still on shakes and crystal light.

  47. First off, waking up from surgery was legitimately one of the most painful experiences of my life. There was a grown man next to me, also waking up from his surgery (same type) crying from the pain. This has been an awful experience and I’m trying to understand why it isn’t highlighted to a patient before they actually go through with the whole process. I’m now on day 5 (hallelujah) and the gas pain (and holding down food without vomiting) is still there and it sucks. If I had known what I was truly about to get myself into, I wouldn’t have done this. I literally woke up from surgery in such extreme pain that I screamed out “are u Fing kidding me?!?!”.
