POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by UnderTheCaliSun,

Has anyone found a safe diuretic to take after surgery? I get awful bloat during my period and it is more noticeable since I've lost all my weight. It's actually uncomfortable. Perhaps, it was just as uncomfortable when I was much heavier but I didn't notice it. My fingers hurt and I can't wear my wedding ring. I'm nervous to try a water pill because I don't know how my body and stomach will react to it. Has anyone found a positive solution that works but is safe for people who have had WLS??

  2. I had surgery on 5/29, was tolerating fluids well. On my second night home I awoke to what felt like hunger pains I had about 2 oz of protein shake and it seemed to subside but came back every couple hours. Day 5 post op I started having difficulty tolerating any and all fluids, regardless of how minute my sips it hurt and my stomach would cramp. Today is day 10 and I am tolerating warm liquids only. I am not able to get the protein shakes or clear protein liquids down. A Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi, I am 10 days post op and on Friday the Doctor gave me the go ahead to start phase 2 which I am sure you know is like creamy soups and eggs etc. Every time I put anything other than water and my protein drinks into my stomach I start to get really bad cramps and I get nauseous. I have started taking my zofran 30 minutes before I try to eat something which has helped with the nausea a bit but I still get really bad stomach cramps even after one bite. Is this normal and has anyone else had this problem? What did they do and when did it stop or get better??

  6. Started by Tejee,

Anyone try Magic Spoon Cereal? It keeps coming up in my newsfeed and I wonder if it's worth it. [emoji18]

  7. Just wondering at what stage is ground Turkey ok to eat.? I used to love lettuce cups with ground turkey avocado , few olives and tomatoes is that all food u cant have till ur past soft food stage and eatting normal??

  8. Started by Prestonandme,

Does anyone else have a problem with dry mouth at night? I'm two weeks out from surgery and am having a terrible time with it. I'm not getting enough water in due to nausea but on the days I have, I still have struggled with the problem. Any tips? I've ordered Xylitol because I am worried about my teeth decaying.

  9. Started by AnnieD78,

Ok so... I’ve been doing so well post-op. Minimal pain, barely any nausea, keeping down fluids, going on walks. I think I might of overdid though bc after my walk I bent over to light a candle and felt a sharp pain by one of my incisions. I thought I would look down and see it’s bleeding but it’s not. I shouldn’t panic right? Just take it easy and stop trying to do so much?

Where was everyone at with weight loss at their 2 month post-op mark ? I know everyone is differnet but i'm just curious. I was sleeved 05/20 and have lost 31lbs. Feeling really great about my progress.

  11. Started by KarenLR75,

OK, I got approval from dr. today to have 1 scrambled egg today and basically start pureed stage tomorrow (couple of days early). I scrambled it in olive oil spray and ate it as slowly as I ever ate anything...carefully chewing it to bits. My stomach was still growling (true hunger growling) but I figured the egg would settle in and that would be that. Instead about 15 mins..maybe 10..after the last bite, I felt the restriction kick in like I had just inhaled an entire protein shake. I have never felt the restriction discomfort as I've been on full liquids and have been very cautious..but I felt it last week badly..and it was when I stupidly made one of my pr…

I had surgery July 25th. I’ve had complications with medicine and painful cramps. I am still only able to eat per Dr.’s instructions 2tbsp of food (ricotta, potatoes, etc.). However, I’ve been drinking while eating! I feel like such an idiot. I’m going to talk to my doctor next week when I see him. Have I done damage? Could I have stretched my pouch? I’m really freaking out!

Hello Everyone! I hope you're all doing well. I'm so glad I found this site. I will be one week post op tomorrow. My head has been working overtime. The reason is that I also suffer from anxiety. So there are so many questions and concerns rumbling around in my head. I'm worried about leaks, worried that I'm not taking enough nutrients in, worried about hair loss, worried about when to start taking vitamins, wondering when I'll start losing weight. I'm thinking about how all this will work after I'm several weeks post op. Does my appetite naturally decrease? Will it be easy or hard to eat very small portions in 20 or 30 minute intervals? I worry that every litt…

Hello! It’s currently midnight for me, and I have a doctor’s appt at 9 am for post-op. I can’t sleep and I think I’ve developed a cold. My ears hurt when I swallow, my nose is constantly either runny or stuffed, and my throat feels practically bruised. My head is a bit warm, and I’m unsure how much I’ll actually be able to sleep tonight. I’m super tired, but my body is aching so much, it’s hard to relax. I’m unsure if I’m allowed to cancel a post-op, honestly. Do I cancel and reschedule, or wait for my next post op (scheduled in 2 weeks)? It may seem silly to ask what I’m allowed, but I really don’t want to do the wrong thing. What should I do? Help!

Ok everyone I am worried. I have only lost a total of 15lbs in 4 weeks is that even normal? I do a lot of walking and my protein intake has been 60gm per day. But I lost 4 pant sizes. My doctor says yo slow down on the protein.

Hi everyone! Ok so I fell on Thurs and sprained my ankle pretty bad. I have surgery on the 19th. I think I could still be having problems on the 19th. So what I need to know from yall here, how painful is that walking, especially from those who had laparoscopic GB. I'm trying to get an idea of what I can be in for if I'm still limping.

It takes everything most of the time for me to want to eat. Anyone else dealing or felt like this around this time? Starting W: 268 Day of Surgery W: 253 Today’s W: 234

OMG! I have cheated! I feel horrible! I had a tiny piece of carrot cake yesterday and a couple spoonfuls of banana pudding and my stomach didnt reject it! I'm horrified now because I thought I would never be able to eat sweets again! My stomach betrayed me and I betrayed myself! Now that Im feeling better Im noticing that my.addiction to sugar is still there. I cant fail myself! Ugh!

  23. I started to lose a lot at month 4. Now at month 6 it doesn't seem to have slowed. I know a lot of people on here say it's not noticeable to others etc. I have thin hair to begin with and its very noticeable. I tried a few sprays but they appear too dark. I am going to try the next shade up. I also might buy the brand Toppik. I might be able to try and flip my part but I am starting to freak out a little. When does it slow down? When does it start to grow back. I have been my multivitamin which has Biotin, getting my protein etc. I am going to start extra biotin and have already been using Nioxin. I am afraid to try clip in hair that it would damage the hair I still have…

  24. Sleeved Monday, released from the hospital Wednesday, and so far... so long as I have a pain killer (prescribed narco) every 6-7 hours I'm okay. It's pretty disgusting to take, since I have to crush it in water mixed w some crystal light and drink it, but boy does it help. If I don't have it I'm too uncomfortable to even go to sleep. I'm also prescribed Ranitidine (antacid), and even though my surgeon wants me to have it once a day, I physically CANNOT take it until my body is able to swallow a large pill. Granted, the pain killer is disgusting as well, but the antacid is on another level. Crystal Light cannot fix this. I promise I'm not being picky. The Ranitidin…

  25. Im drinking as much milk as I can for the protein content but even thats a struggle Also I'm unsure exactly how much I should be consuming a day, my diet sheet says to try yoghurts, custards etc but whats the size portion that I should be consuming? I’ve been cleared to have coffee (yay!) but my problem is, I only like my coffee with either the flavored creamers that are bad for you or with lots of sugar- both a no go from my nutritionist. I’m not a huge fan of Splenda or the sugar free syrups either. I’ve been debating on even starting to drink coffee again if I’m not going to be able to have it the way I enjoy it. So my question for you guys is- how do you have your coffee post op and still enjoy it?

Has anybody had that issue! Am taking my nausea medication as directed! It’s usually in the morning it happens! Any advice is welcome! Thank you

Hi, I just came upon this site, I am NOT having this surgery BUT my mother is and I'm looking for ways to help her get through it she is have the surgery on the 21st of this month. She has already started her liquid diet and has 11 days left till her surgery date. I am looking for any good tips of hacks, but definitely advise. I want to do everything possible to make it easier on her, she has MANY health issues besides not being able to keep weight off. I would love if there is any information that's good to know, or if there's anything that she should know but might not. Thanks

I’m about to start my purée stage of my recovery and I have to go out of town for work all next week. I’m going to be taking some things and my measuring cups. Any ideas on hotel living (I’ll have access to a mini fridge and microwave) and/or out to eat ideas for food during the purée stage??

  31. Started by Laura8098,

Hi, I’m 2 1/2 weeks out from having my surgery. I just started the puréed diet Wednesday, which anything is better than a liquid diet. My stomach seems so sensitive. I’m almost scared to eat anything. I’m not hungry, but I know I need to eat to survive. I gag every time I brush my teeth and spend about 5 minutes dry heaving. Is this because my stomach isn’t fully healed? Once it’s healed, will this go away? I can start taking multi-vitamins now but had to re-order the capsules. The chewables were entirely too big. My emotions are up and down. I really don’t like the restrictions and so many rules. I’ve lost 26 pounds, so it’s work. It’s just getting throug…

  32. How did your mental health change after surgery? My weight definitely piled on when I went to college. When I moved home and then out on my own it got even worse. I was depressed and in denial that I was suffering from said depression and anxiety. I used food to cope and developed a lot of bad habits. I have declined plans to stay home and binge eat and I have also flaked on plans because I literally did not have nice enough clothes that fit me where I would feel comfortable going out with friends for a night. I have missed countless events and milestones in loved one’s lives because I have reached a point where I am in physical pain when I walk or stand too long. …

  33. Started by random-rants,

Hello all, This is, as my username states, a random rant. I had my surgery on 3/22. I have stuck to the plan thus far: around 90g of protein and 100 oz. of water per day, at least an hour of walking which is also supplemented with weigh training every other day. I only eat eggs, grilled chicken and fish. Nothing fried, no rice, no potatoes, no bread, no soda. I've been pretty proud of my diet. And yet I am stalled. I went through the dreaded 3 week stall in the beginning and thought it was over but now I am at 4 months and have been bouncing the same few pounds since June. I have tried everything to break it: increasing calories, lowering calories (I average around 6…

  34. I’m curious from what I’ve read once you get down past your goal you typically rebound up 5 to 10 pounds or 5 to 10%. Where does that weight settle at? Did it go back to your hips, stomach, chest everywhere?

  35. Started by 2Bsmaller18,

I just got the results of my blood test (it's after hours so I can't call the MD until tomorrow or Monday). Everything came back fine except my Vitamin B-12 was really high. It said over 2000 but didn't give a number with the normal range of 232 - 1045. I also had a high RWD of 17.2 with normal 12.3-15.4%. I looked online and it seems that because my MCV value is normal that it could be a folate, iron or B12 deficiency. So I'm guessing its iron/folate. Did anyone else have this? Did your MD have you increase iron supplements?

  39. Started by Lesslie92,

How do you survive full liquid diets for 2 weeks I just want food. I am getting depressed I want a healthy meal! I am doubting so much right now. I know this is worth it but I don’t want to get like this and I am barely a week out.

Forgive me if this has been answered 100 times. I looked through a few months of posts but didn't see it. I had VS surgery on 7/31 and everything went smoothly. I've been able to get in all my walks, my incisions are good and generally I feel comfortable. I am a tad constipated but things ARE moving. I am on Prilosec and tylenol. My issue is that I seem to be experiencing a sort of "call and response" pain in my stomach after each sip or swallow of water/protein drink/yogurt. It gets worse later in the day and makes the chore of getting enough liquid much more tedious. I think it might be a gas pain, though it manifests like sort of a strong hunger pang. S…

Okay, I had a small bag of pistachios and was super hungry so I ate a few. They tasted AH-MAZING!! So I ate some more and basically I’m addicted to them at the moment. Didn’t see anything saying I can or cannot have them (7 weeks post-op). Anyone have any ideas if these are okay or if I’m going to end up in the ER for eating these delicious green devils? :)

  43. Hey everyone! I am 6 months post op vsg and I definitely feel like I am able to eat anything much easier now. But because of this I'm at a really tough stall....and I know part of it is because I can get more calories in. So...what did/do you eat in a day 6 months post op?? And how many calories do you take in a day? Thanks!!

Ok, so this might seem like a totally crazy and strange question to be asking, and I apologize if this question was already asked and I missed it, but I was wondering if anyone has taken diet or weight loss pills after having weight loss surgery? I know it seems weird considering that the surgery would seem to eliminate that need so I am guessing no one would feel like they would have to spend money on weight loss aids, but I am just wondering about it. Prior to weight loss I had tried several types such as Hydroxycut, Lipo 6 Black and Alli. I was told by my surgeon to be very careful with my caffeine intake because it increases stomach acid, but I have not had really any…

It doesn’t matter if I drink, swallow, brush my teeth, gargle it won’t go away. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions to get rid of it. It’s driving me nuts.

Hi! I’m officially 2 weeks out of surgery and facing some dilemmas. This week has been a tough learning week for me. I recently learned that unless I take my daily meds with a hot beverage (I like decaf), it takes me 2 hours to take all my medicine and then recover from the nausea. With the decaf, I can finally take my medicine more quickly, but I still do have some nausea, although it’s not quite as bad with cold liquid. I’m at the point that all liquids nauseate me. I get really thirsty and just thinking about drinking water makes me want to throw up. I absolutely cannot tolerate gatorade anymore, and now just the smell is enough to make me gag. I know I need …
