POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Does anyone else just feel icky all the time after surgery? Not debilitating but I just feel slightly pukey almost al the time. When I’m hungry, after I eat, in-between...I go about my day just fine only have this gnawing puke feeling constantly.

  2. Started by mjrinere,

I was wondering how many people after surgery have physically demanding jobs? If so, how do you cope with it?

  3. Started by BrittneyC,

Hi everyone. I had my surgery May 28, and I’m now down 54 pounds . My surgeon never gave me an appt to help me go through the stages so I’m doing it alone . I’m officially on the last stage but I however, am doing it slowly and adding little foods. I eat everything on my plate as 1/3 cup each and it’s been sitting well. I was wondering what foods were added on at this stage for everyone !

  4. Just wondering what meats are you eating 6 weeks in and how is your stomach adjusting to it

  5. Started by ruthalbert21,

So I'm 51 days post op and I lost a total of just 30lbs. I havent been the greatest at this journey because I did try some things that I shouldn't have but I have been on my best behavior lately. I have been consumming my 60 gram of protein and my 64 oz of water but I'm not losing nothing. I constantly constipated. I dont know what to do...someone help me please.

  6. Started by nouranaly,

Hi guys, I had my surgery on june 24, I have lost 39.6 lbs within 3 weeks, I'm just wondering, is this too much weight to lose within the first 3 weeks? I feel great and I don't feel dizzy at all, should I change anything?

  7. Started by furry life,

The one big downer being 5'1 and 300lbs before surgery. Is when I lose 30 lbs in a month, no one notices. I feel great and so happy, I want to scream it from the mountain top. Not that I want everyone saying "wow, you look awesome", but just one person would be nice. Still HIGH FIVE FOR ME!!!!??

  8. Started by sassskin,

anyone have any home made babyfood recipes my doctor said after surgery I can have baby food and I would rather have homemade than store bought

  9. Started by nouranaly,

Hi all, can you please reccomend me what to eat in week 5? Thanks all

  10. A year after I had my sleeve surgery I had a tummy tuck. I am praying that when I lose weight this time I will bounce back somewhat. Anyone with this experience? Thanks!

  11. Started by mjrinere,

Hello — I am just wondering how many people were instructed to wear post surgical binders after surgery?

  15. Started by fulfillingfavor,

Hello how long did it take for the weight from the fluid from hospital come off, I left 10 pounds heavier. When dose the weight start falling off?

  16. Started by Brent701,

I have always been a fast eater and post op that is causing me a decent bit of discomfort. I know the tricks but mentally that’s one thing I have yet to get over. When I eat slow I have little to no discomfort my question is will this continue for life if I eat too fast?

  17. 3 Weeks post-op and I have lost a grand total of 11 pounds. Whoopee Doo.... Yes, I know, some are slow losers, don't compare yourself to others, are you getting enough Protein, are you drinking enough Water, up your calories, reduce your calories, reduce carbs/up carbs then reduce them again to trick your body, exercising enough? , throw the scale away, have the moon and stars aligned correctly??? I have not lost a pound since Day 10. So yes, it looks like I may be the only gastric sleeve failure....wonderful. So now what... just keep plugging along eating freaking mush, drinking Protein shakes and hope and pray.... One positive thing.. I had a psychotic scale…

Hey guys I'm curious how many people post surgery still take protein shakes daily even months after their surgery?? I know the emphasis is on getting high protein and water so I'm curious if it would be fine to live off protein shakes long term say with one evening meal as I'm pretty busy during the day time and would rather pack protein shakes which are high protein Low carbs. I'm getting closer to surgery everyday so getting a little anxious. Thank you

  19. I don’t know what I was thinking. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago Monday, at Mercy medical & lost about 16lbs and then for this last week it just stalled. Nothing nada zilch. I’m so scared I went through this for nothing. And how the hell did I keep that English muffin down!! This isn’t a good day. Some one please tell me this will all be worth it in the end. ??‍♀️ Because I just can’t fail, yet again.

  20. I believe in transparency and if this post helps even one person that is why I am posting it. Would I do the RNY again? Yes. Did I know going in I would have to say goodbye to some foods forever? No. I keep a list of foods now just in case I would ever forget and how sick they made me. My list is below, please add to it any horrible foods that make you sick! Peanut butter Beef of any kind Most frozen dinners like Stouffers MSG in foods - Like Chinese and other takeout foods Greasy and deep fried foods like onion rings Soups with MSG or grease in them at restaurants Most breads, pancakes, and donuts Super sweet sugary desserts like chocolate cake Too much ice…

I just had my surgery on June 27, 2019, I just now made it to the one week mark, and I am finding that it is easy to gulp down water. I feel I can even chug water down, but am refraining to do so. Is this normal? Are there any consequences to my sleeve with drinking water normally this early on? will I stretch my stomach or cause a leak? Please help.

  22. So I start my stage 4 tomorrow.. as I understand this is not really a stage anymore and this is just going to be my lifestyle from now on. During every stage previous I had lists of things I could and could not have in that stage. On stage 4 I have a list of things I shouldn’t eat or drink.. soda, candy, fried food.. the obvious. My paperwork tells me to gradually start introducing new foods as tolerated and if I don’t tolerate something to try it again in a couple weeks. I’m so nervous to just start adding new things and scared of adding new foods! And it’s so intense going from very restricted stages with a set list of what I can and can’t have and now it’s like I’m on …

  23. Since the beginning of this process time has flown by so fast anyone else just get their surgery done if so how are you feeling and how's it going?

  24. Started by MeepMeep,

I’m 5 days out from a sleeve and left the hospital with a nausea med that dissolved under my tongue and liquid codine. Both to be taken as needed for pain or nausea. Is there a middle ground? Codine makes me sleepy and I’m out for hours. Is there anything I can take to take the edge off the pain but not put me into a stupor?

  25. Started by shellyk018,

How long after surgery did you add these to your diet? I’ve been dying to have a salad or fresh fruit. My paperwork from my surgeons office says I can add them starting next week, a little over a month post op. So I was so excited to go grocery shopping! But I was just looking for some information online and I read somewhere not to eat ANY raw fruits or veggies until 3 months out! Please tell me your experience with this! How soon did you have them? Did you have any trouble? Do you still have any trouble with some?

  26. Started by Butterfly#7,

At 7 weeks post gastric sleeve procedure I am still getting occasional nausea. Oddly it's not just when I'm full or need to eat, but I can feel fine and all of a sudden get really nausea with the mouth watering and everything. My doctor gave me a few pills for when I have extreme nausea but I try not to use them every time I feel sick. Does anyone else still experience nausea and other than meds is there another relief? Someone suggested that I get some sugar free peppermints and suck on those ...

Hello! I’m about 3 days post op and feeling pretty good! I have some weird soreness that I’m wondering if anyone else had? My calves are super sore- not unbearable by any means it just seems weird to me? And also when I wake up my throat is sore? Are these just some weird side effects of being in bed too long?

  28. Started by NYJenn,

I went for my one year post op appt today. I’m 5’7” and 166 lbs. my BMI is 26, still in the overnight category. She told me at two different points during the appt she would like me to stop losing weight. I’d like to at least get to the “normal” range for my height. Ultimately it’s still my decision, I just thought it was strange. Any thoughts?

I had gastric sleeve surgery in 2016. I had an mri of my lower back, which showed 2 disc bulges. Could this be the reason for my back pain? Does the back pain have anything to do with the gastric sleeve?

  30. Hi, i was sleeved 2.5 weeks ago, started mushies in my third week, but usually i can not eat more than two large spoons of ANYTHING, but this fruit salad i downed in 10 minutes like it was nothing, this makes me question how my stomach works, i'm confused, are fruits just going right through me?

  31. So I’m 22 days post op. I had the gastric sleeve done on June 19,2019. My starting weight was 255 and I’m down to 229 but of course I’m experiencing a stall. I have been gradually adding soft foods after the 2 weeks. So like mashed potatoes boiled eggs really tender chicken soft veggies soft salmon. Everything has been soft and I have been making sure to chew. I see that some people don’t get hungry but I’m starting to. Some days I have restrictions other days I don’t. I feel like I did something wrong maybe stretched my stomach. I don’t know if that is even possible so early in. Really just wonder if anyone has any answers or had felt this ?

  33. Started by Starflower,

My team gave me some guidelines on how much food your pouch can handle at various stages of post op ie. 1/4 cup up to three months. Is it the same for protein shakes?

  34. I didn't understand why some people didn't want there families to know they had WLS . I do now! Last night at a family get together everyone is around the counter getting there pizza and whatnot. I grabbed a tiny piece of french bread and took out the middle thats wonderfully soft. Everyone said you cant eat that. I said ohh yes i can. Then my sis said dont you dare eat that. I shoved the whole thing in my mouth it was great! I should of put "i cant believe its not butter spray on it". In that moment my eyes are opened to all the judement you get. People who know you had something to help u lose weight watch you. Hi guys! I had gastric sleeve exactly a month ago. I lost a lot of weight very quickly from the pre-op diet and the first week after surgery (35lbs in total). So it's been a month and my weight has stayed the same for THREE WEEKS. Is this weird? Is this normal? Is this bad? I am getting no response from the aftercare team and I'm just baffled/worried.

I’m 8 weeks post surgery (sleeve) and all has been going great until about a week ago. My weight loss has hit a wall! I only eating meal replacement shakes or soup and a no fat yogurt for an afternoon snack. My caloric intake is below 800 calories and I am exercising 2 times per day, morning is cardio for an hour and evening is weight training for about 30 to 45 minutes and then 30 minutes of cardio again. Any ideas to help break through this stall in my weight loss? Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

I had my surgery on the 24th. It has now been 2 weeks. My weight is sooooo weird. I was expecting it to just come flying off. I lost 5 lbs and got down to 239 but then today I weighed myself and i was back up to 243.4. I have been so confused and just down about it all day. I am doing my liquid diet. I don't know what I am doing wrong. My doctor wants me to get 64 ounces of liquids a day. I have been doing so happily but not sure about it. I did have diabetes type 2 before the surgery but my sugar has been staying between 90 and 115. Could it be the diabetes, insulin not kicking in or something. This surgery was way too important to me for this to be happening. It just m…

I had RNY July 1st. Anyone else diet plan after surgery calls for 3 weeks liquid? I have one week clear then two weeks full liquids ? I want real food lol I see so many others who can have things sooner. Is my doctor just being super cautious?

Hello everyone!! I had my sleeve June 12th, been doing good, following meal plan and all however I am still struggling with my water intake. I have been losing about a pound a day however yesterday and today I gained a pound. There are no changes in my meal intake, is this normal?

  41. Started by mildredmoncada,

Help... im following the plan i am on soft food but ive gained 2 lbs i dont understand... is anyone going thru this?

  42. I’m a belly sleeper and although I’ve been fine sleeping on my back I’m definitely not as comfortable and I can NOT wait to sleep normally. How long until you were comfortable sleeping on your tummy?

  43. Started by Ellf,

For lunch today, i decided to have a shredded chicken mini-quesadilla from taco bell with extra shredded chicken. It went down okay, and to my surprise, I was able to eat the entire thing. Except, after taking those last couple bites... and now lasting more than half an hour later, I'm in physical pain as my restriction kicked in. Holy crap, this hurts. I'm currently hoping that it's not stuck because I've had that happen before. I'm not making this mistake again. If I do eat that again, it will only be half. (It's sad because before the surgery, I'd eat one of these in addition to whatever else I ordered at Taco Bell.)

  44. Started by Brent701,

I hope some of you are able to appreciate the humor in this. For others I know the struggle is no laughing matter but i must digress.

  45. Started by johnedwin,

when you ate eggs for the first time after the surgery how did it feel? today was my first time it was kinda rough i felt very full...

  46. So, I've graduated to soft-foods. Has anyone had the sense of eating, being full, and simultaneously feeling hunger pangs (not head hunger, actual hunger pangs?) It feels like I have a pouch which is working, and then a stomach below it, which is whining and raising holy hell at the same time. What's this about? Geesh.

  47. Started by mjlopez913,

Well everyone I had my sleeve done today. Now it's meal time so I have all these choices umm. Pain has been horrible but it's under control now.

  48. Hello all! So I’m 10 days post op, vertical sleeve (5-16-19) and I don’t know how much weight I should be losing per day. I freaked out yesterday because my scale went up. I was 352 to 359 but I really am not eating much. I’m drinking a lot of water but as for pureed foods, I’m having about an oz of ground chicken with a tbsp of chunky salsa (without added sugar) or 1/4 oz of refried beans as a snack plus the protein shakes around my 5th snack. Today I weighed myself and I’m back to 353 but I have to admit, I’m going through it! I’m freaking out afraid that I’m failing at this! I also don’t have much support. My husband doesn’t want to hear my whining, and I can’t tal…

Hi ladies! So I need to get on birth control again because I don’t want to get pregnant until after it is safe to do so but I’m afraid of blood clots as I’m on eliquis for a month after surgery. (Has VSG On 5/16) anyone have feedback on what are good options. I’m also discussing with my GYN this week but personal experiences matter. Thanks!!!

  50. My husband and I are having VSG on Tuesday. Before I ask this question I just want to say that we are aware every person and situation is different anyway, we were talking about a few other couples we know who’ve done this and how exciting it was watching them lose and picturing ourselves in their shoes soon. I’m just curious on you guys journeys how much had you lost at your milestone appts? Post-Op Apt, 1mo, 4mo, 6 mo, 1 yr etc.
