POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by LisaCh,

Hi. Anyone else get horrible diarrhea. I’m day three post op and it’s horrible. Don’t know if it warrants a call to my doctor or not. I’m sorry I’m asking so many questions. Thank you.

  2. Started by DarthVixen,

I'm three weeks post op and I never get that full feeling. I just eat the amount they tell me and stop. Anyone else experience this?

Hi. I got the sleeve yesterday. I look six months pregnant. Is this normal? If so when does it go down? I’m so uncomfortable. I look bigger now than before. Thank you.

  4. Started by Jessibird,

I am 2.5 years out from gastric bypass. I had lost 100 lbs but have gained about 15 back. In November my blood sugar started dropping out of nowhere. I have seen my both my gastric doctor and my pcp and they both tell me to cut carbs and eat every two hours. Those are both ok but I have found that if I eat some carbs along with protein I have many less episodes which is great except I'm scared I'm going to gain. Anyone with experience or advice on this? I have an apt with a endocrinologist that specializes in bariatric patients but it is not until November.

Hi Everyone, I'm about 6 months out of surgery. I lost around 86 pounds from my heaviest weight. However, recently I've experience bad adult acne and really dry brittle hair. Does any one have any recommendations for these problems? Please let me know of your experiences and any products that helped. Thank you.

Hi everyone, I am grabbing surgery on July 9th and are just getting things ready. Can anyone recommend a 32 ounce water bottle with 1 ounce marks they might have used in order for me to track my intake and nitv drink too much at once. I'm concerned about getting in that 64 ounces a day. Thanks

I had VSG 04/08, and I have only lost 55 pounds total, including what I lost before surgery. I exercise every day! Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas on how to help?

  9. Let me explain. I'm currently in Phase 3 of my Post-op diet. Which is supposed to be soft foods. I can have moist soft meats and veggies whole. I just need to thoroughly before swallowing. Duh. But this part right now has been extremely difficult. I actually prefer stages 1 and 2. Liquid and pureed foods. Weird? I'm eating low cal/zero sugar "snacks" as a preference. Cheese sticks, jello, pudding, fruit cups in natural juices. Mashed potatoes and pureed meats mixed together with veggies. All weighed and counted like I should. But because of the absolute sickness I get from regular eating, I avoid what I'm supposed to be doing as part of my doctor's diet plan. I don't eat …

Hello, I will be two months post op, next week, I went in for my post op psych evaluation and found out I gained 3 lbs after being down 26. Has anyone else experienced gain in this post op life?? Thanks!

  11. Started by annrose28,

They say don't drink carbonated drinks but I'm really craving seltzer water. I always drank it before the surgery.

  12. I have dealt with gout off and on since I was 17. My body has responded very well to Indomethacin once properly dosed. Colcrys doesnt provide any relief at all but I get all the side effects. Fortunately the past few years the gout attacks are much less frequent. Unfortunately I still experience fairly frequent other inflammatory conditions. The past 10 days I had had pretty bad joint pain in my index finger at the knuckle. Since I had the sleeve and NSAID's are no longer an option what am I supposed to do? Tylenol does not provide much relief as an anti inflammatory.

  13. I swear my nutritionist told me one, twice a day. But now that I’m actually supposed to start my regimen after surgery, the paper she wrote me says 2 twice a day. Seems like a lot. Or maybe I’m just bitter cause it’s going to take a lot to get me through a month ? I’ll do whatever I have to, just wondering!

  14. Started by CurvyMom,

Can you all recommend your favorite yogurt? I am on puree stage and had some Oikos Triple Zero today but it was too sweet for me. Almost sickening sweet...pre op I liked them but nope...... So I am looking for low sugar and higher protein. I was looking at Sigis as a possibility but was just curious if anyone has an favorites.

  15. Ahh.. such a fun topic to talk about publicly. So a few days ago I took Miralax and then the following day I took some laxative tablets(both approved by dr) and it wasn’t until yesterday that.. well, they worked. I don’t know if they have a lingering effect? Because just now as I was sipping my protein shake I started to feel a little nauseous.. I got up to walk around and thought maybe I just needed to burp.. but then I had to run to the bathroom and well.. you can use your imagination. Now I’ve read all about dumping syndrome but I’m just not quite sure if that’s what happened or it was just still the laxatives working through me. I’ve read it takes about 30 minutes for…

Hi all, I am five days post-op and I have slight pain in my lower left chest/in my side. I have been doing the breathing exercises no problem and am just kind of sore otherwise but I'm wondering if anyone else has had that? I'm thinking it might be gas pain or maybe pain from surgery radiating. Let me know!! Thanks!

Okay. I’ve promised myself I won’t panic. Was sleeved on 2/6 and recovering “normally” Lost 23.4 pounds in 12 days and now I’ve been at the exact same weight for 3 days running. Lol, I even had my husband get on the scale to verify it wasn’t “stuck” and it registered a different weight with him. I’ve heard of the 3 week stall and was ready for that, but this has kinda hit me by surprise. Has anyone else had the 2 week stall? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that maybe because I lost almost 10% of my body weight in 2 days, I just hit the stall early? The thought that my body is betraying me again this early in the process is unimaginable

I am 6 weeks post op but was wondering for those 2+ years with sleeves if the feeling of restriction is the same as at first. Portion control has always been my main weakness and was the biggest motivation to have the procedure. Is it always going to feel like this though or does it gradually regress after the honeymoon phase?

  19. Started by johnedwin,

do you all wish you had a hospital bed at home following the surgery?

  20. I had my sleeve done may 31st 2019. My surgeons office isnt the best with giving information unless i ask them. I emailed them asking how much excercise am i supposed to be doing right now? Im in liquid stage still. They said excercise is always good but remember u just had surgery so baby steps. What does that mean?? I like directions and that wasnt what i was hopeing for. Am i supposed to be walking everyday for 30mins or an hour? Am i supposed to be jogging i just dont know what will help my weight loss. I have been the same weight for 3 days now and not exercising until my docter said it is always good so wondering how much?? I dont think gett…

after gastric sleeve i have felt cold after surgery even when taking a warm shower...is this a common occurence...

  22. I was supposed to start full liquids yesterday but I was slacking, I didn’t get even 1/3 of my protein.. and all day I didn’t feel right. Kind of nauseous and queasy. I’m guessing it’s because I’m starting to get weak and NEED that protein, but feeling that way made it even harder to stomach getting any down. Does that make sense? Did anyone else feel like this? Up until yesterday I felt great but I’m guessing my body is starting to need that protein. Any advice or hearing your story would be so appreciated!

I’m about 2.75 years out and I’ve been taking a PPI to treat Gerd daily. Has anyone taken Omeprazole long term or any PPI. I’m concerned with some of the literature I see. It links PPIs like Omeprazole to esophagus cancer. I’m confused does PPIs help or hurt the cancer risk. I know there are other problems associated. Anyone with gerd post op I’m interested to hear your thoughts!!

  24. Started by okayestmom,

I had VGS 6/11/18 and had my gallbladder removed 4/6/19. My gallbladder was shooting stones into my common duct which caused jaundice and liver enzymes to go sky high. My liver enzymes are starting to go down, but are still high. The Doctor said it can take 2 to 3 months to return to normal and I have a follow up scheduled. I currently feel better than I have in years, it turns out from the biopsy that my gallbladder issues were both chronic and acute (I have had slightly elevated liver enzymes since 2015, I quit drinking when I found out, but it did not change my labs in subsequent years). I didn’t believe I was drinking excessively, but my Doctor said more than one…

So this may be obvious since I’m just shy of 3 weeks post up after the sleeve but want to make sure it’s nothing more. I’m having some muscle pains as I reach and move certain ways where my largest incision is. I want to say it’s just the muscle because I’m able and comfortable doing more and maybe I did to much too soon. Anyone have any experiences with this? I’ve done super well the past week so this feeling is kind of new. I have been taken some ibuprofen to take some of the pain away but it’s not unbearable. Thanks in advance!

I had GB on Thursday (4/18) and now that I’m home, I’ve gained the weight back I loss during the clear liquid stage. I’m assuming it has something to do with the swelling and all the fluids I was given in the hospital. However, is that normal or should I be concerned?

i was under impression that those hunger pains many people always have would go away for a short time following gastric sleeve..it lasted a day and since i was not eating much in the hospital i have nothing but non stop hunger pains...

  30. Soooo I just noticed that I have a large brown patch of discoloration from where I was receiving blood thinner injections in the hospital after surgery.... six months ago. Are permanent changes in pigmentation normal? The bruise was MASSIVE and dark purple for weeks.

I had surgery one week ago (6/6/19). Im not losing a lot of weight. I’m consuming about 400 calories a day. I’m wondering if this is enough! Is it possible my body has gone into some sort of starvation mode and is storing fat? How many calories should I be consuming?

  32. I had the sleeve on Monday and came home last night. I have a massive headache that started in the hospital, the nurses did not seem concerned and just gave me painkillers. It’s still there only worse, I could not sleep a wink last night. Any suggestions what I can do/take to relieve this horrid pain??

  33. I’m just curious and I know everyone is different but just want to hear how long after surgery until everyone started to feel their normal selves again?

  34. Wondering if its ok if i suck on sugarfree mints or is that a no no in the first stage of liquid diet? Also does gum really put air in your stomach or is that ok to chew? Sorry cant keep calling the docter with my dumb questions!!!

  35. Im wondering why they dont give appetite suppresants when your in the liquid faze. I litterally told my surgeon im only eatting 4oz of protein a day , 6oz of broth and then 60oz of water on good days. He said perfect keep doing that till i see u again in a month! So why dont they give appetite suppresants?Anyone know?

  36. I had my sleeve surgery may 31st. The night i ran out of pain meds my toes tingled at night which kept me up most of the night. Its so annoying i want to bang my foot on the floor. If i put preasure on my toes it feels better but its driving me nuts and even taking ambien at night im hardly sleeping because of it. Does anyone know why or how to stop it? I tryed drinking more water like maybe its from dehydration but that doesnt seem to be the case. Anyone know?

Sleeved 3/20/18. Almost near target weight. Surgery weight 353. Current weight 226. I am getting bruises on my stomach, halfway between belly button to point wear stomach hangs lowest. I still have fat in my stomach to loose. About 4 inches out from belly button A few weeks ago I got a sudden bruise on my right. I did not suffer any injury that would cause the bruise. I was very surprised. A nice purplely one. Concerned me enough in magic marker the edges to seen if it got bigger. Now, I have a similar one, almost same position on my left side. And a third one; smaller, light tan, higher and closer to my button. My first one has since dissappered. Could any of …

  42. Started by 2Bsmaller18,

Sorry this is a gross question. Pre surgery when you vomit it is often a large amount and is not discreet to anyone nearby or in the public bathroom you could be in. After surgery you eat once a few ounces. Is it still obvious if you get sick or is it more discreet? I'm guessing its not projectile and not as obvious. I'm just wondering it seems like a lot of people vomit after surgery at some point at work, out in public etc and I am wondering how obvious it is to coworkers etc.

I am 5 days post OP and starting to regret my decision to have VSG. Does anyone else feel like this? I thought I was prepared but mentally and physically it is really hard.

I am 10 days post op and healing well. I've had an overall positive experience. I am however really freaked out that I just drank about 10oz in 10 minutes. I wasn't paying attention and next thing I knew, it is was gone. I hope that I have restriction! I also hope I didn't harm myself. I have no discomfort whatsoever. Has anyone experienced this?

Just had my 8 week post op appointment. I’m only down 20lbs since my surgery! I’m clearly doing something wrong. How have others managed with slow weight loss?

  48. It’s been a while omg hey guys! Ok so I could never understand before and after having surgery how people gain back their weight and sometimes more. I was sleeved over 2 years ago and now that I can eat whatever I want I completely understand the struggle. I still till this day can’t eat full meals like I would have a little bit of everything and just pick at the plate until I’m done which takes like an hour or two honestly, my problem is snacking. I can eat everything from snickers to Doritos and it’s just so annoying because having the self control is more like mind control. I always tell myself I don’t need it yet sometimes I still end up getting candy or a salty…

  49. Started by Jobber,

I feel guilty because I've been doing it for so long since last September, but I just stopped logging all my meals. I'm pretty much in a rhythm now in regards to what I'm eating and I'm still dropping at a slow but steady rate. Logging is just very cumbersome as it has been for these last several months, but part of me is going to worry about what could happen now that I have stopped. My surgery was in March and I stopped in May. I'd love to hear from some vets as to how they decided to stop or keep going with logging and why. TIA
