POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by artisticmindRN,

After surgery, healing, and being at goal/mid-goal has anyone went to an amusement park and had problems with rides? I'm hoping to have surgery in late july or beginning of august. We're planning on Disneyland in March/April 2020 and maybe Universal. I'm able to ride coasters now ( I love my thrill rides!!) but I know people who've said surgeries and/or pregnancies changed their tolerance and they are no longer able to tolerate the rides. Has anyone experienced this or were you able to before and can still go on rides?

Hey everyone, So I had my surgery yesterday, got the leak test completed and all is well to start my clear liquid diet. My question is, every time I seem to drink something, (I’m only taking very tiny sips) but I get serious like gas burping pain... has anyone had this feeling after surgery? If so, how long did it last? I cant drink as much as I should because of this awkward burping gas I get. Thank you!

  3. Started by RoseKay91,

I had my gastric sleeve done on April 16, 2019. I’m currently in my full liquids stage. When I drink water or eat jello or just consume anything within the rules so to say, I can’t tell if my stomach hurts because I’m full or gassy. I’ve been burping a lot after surgery but past two days I have been having a lot of gas (TMI, sorry). Anyone feel the same?

So, I’m having trouble locating non-caffeine based crystal light. Any one have other drink mix solutions? I only use them to cut the taste of Premier Protein Water, but why oh why does everything have caffeine?

  5. Started by Venessa Blair,

Pre surgery I took cymbalta daily since 2005 and if I missed a dose the next day I would have uncontrollable crying spells, since the surgery 4/17/19, I haven’t taken it.. no emotional breakdowns I sometimes feel like I want to cry but just a thought of something else and boom it goes away, I happy about that, but are there emotions related to some parts of the stomach that is taken out with the gastric sleeve??? I kinda feel like I have no feelings and I don’t dare be a cold, uncaring emotional person.. any input???

Hello Everyone, My recovery has not be smooth to say the least. My doctor cleared me for soft solids and that’s when it all went wrong. I follow his instructions to a T but after a few days felt pain in my abdomen. Later I found blood in my stool. I went to hospital and found out I had pancreatitis. The blood in the stool test came out negative but I was wondering if anyone else went through this? Ps I don’t have a gallbladder or had a drink since 2018. I didn’t slip and ate a high fat protein. Thank you everyone in advance and Have a Happy Easter! ?

So here I am 3 years out (VSG Sept. 2016) and I’ve gained 30lbs and I’m so mad that I let myself get here. I did the pouch reset recently and it was more of a temporary fix, however I can tell my stomach has shrunk cause I cannot eat as much. I still can eat a good bit though. I’ve definitely included more protein and my diet, cut the carbs and sugar, but the process is very slow. Any suggestions on what I can do? I was thinking trying 500 calories a day but someone told me that’s not enough. I’m almost to the point where I’m scared to eat because I don’t want to gain more weight. I also walk about 30 minutes a day. I know that’s not much but I’m slowing building up…

  8. Started by 2Bsmaller18,

I don't go back to the surgeon until the 6 month appointment. They didn't say anything about blood work. When did you get labs drawn to check for deficits? Is it annually after that?

  9. Started by mousecat88,

I struggled a LOT in the beginning getting protein. Like, I would get 20-30g a day. At my 3 month appointment my prealbumin levels were at the lowest end of normal. I since upped my protein and consistently get 80-90g a day, sometimes higher. Every day. Without fail. I got my 6 month labs back just now and now it says I am protein deficient!??!? WHAT THE HECK!? I can't physically consume any more protein! lol. Seriously, it's all I eat basically. What am I supposed to do?

Hi All! I had my surgery in 12/2015. I am slowly starting to see myself gain weight back and it’s severely depressing. I have dreams about it and I can’t quite seem to get back on track. Do you have any suggestions that will help me be successful?

  12. Started by chuckwalsh,

Six months ago today, October 22'nd I had my sleeve surgery. Highest weight was 496 lb. Surgery weight was 476 lb current weight 369 lb. 107 lbs since surgery.. 127 since highest weight.. still have a long road ahead but it's very nice progress.

I’m getting ready for the gastric sleeve and I’m hitting the gym to help out my health, how long after surgery do I have to wait till I can at least walk in the treadmill?

  14. Started by Lovelyone95,

So I'm currently in the process of getting approved for the sleeve but me and my husband want one more child. My surgeon suggested waiting a year after, did anyone get pregnant a year out? Was the pregnancy fine or do you wish you waited a little longer?

Any of you experienced stomach pain? I am a year out and since last week I eat a bit and I start to cramp for a few hours. I eat less then my usual and stop eating as soon as it hurts and it's about half my regular portions. I can live with the pain and it's not because I over eat, when i do eat more the pain is more around my ribs and feel like I got food stuck in my throat and it isn't the case right now, the pain it more lower stomach. My stomach is also very hot to touch

Hi ladies! Has anyone had any experiences with getting the depo shot post-surgery? My surgery was Nov. 23rd, 2018. I'm terrified of the weight gain aspect and I was thinking of switching to the patch instead. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank-you. [emoji3]

Today marks 4 weeks into my journey. 2 weeks of pre-op diet and 2 weeks after the surgery. I have now lost 31 lbs in 29 days. I am starting on the Pureed stage today and I am quite excited getting to eat real food again. I don't even mind if it is pureed because it is still food and not all liquids. The weight loss is slowing down to half a pound a day so not sure where this is going over the next few months but every pound lost is a victory!

  19. Yesterday I had some tomato soup, and right away I could tell pouch didn't like it but I ate it anyways. I also had a serving of crackers (a no-no I know), thinking it would help settle my new gut. Instead, I had horrible pain all afternoon, similar to when I passed gallstones before my gallbladder removal. So five hours later I vomited. I felt better for a while but then the pain build up again, for another 4 hours later I vomited again. Now the problem is Ms .Pouch doesn't even appreciate room-temperature water, and my gut cramps up for a while after every drink. Clenching, icy, intense pain for a few minutes, that seems to travel as if the whole gang was prot…

I had gastric sleeve surgery April 15 2019. As I write this it is April 20 (6days). I just made a big error by eating two crinkle fries ( well chewed) The first one was ok and the second was going down very very slow down my throat and I was drinking liquids to push it down. As of right now, my stomach is not in pain. My stomach feels fine. My main concern is that it feels that it is stuck further down my esophagus. I’m drinking tea and water to help it go down and I’m very scared and nervous. I totally regret it and I definitely learned my lesson. Never again! Please can anyone help ! What should I do?

I’m 4 days post-op, and while the pain is manageable, my energy level is not. I’m exhausted! Can’t stay awake for more than a few hours at a time. When did this end for some of you? I’m so worried that with so few nutrients I’ll feel this exhausted for a long time. :-( Im taking my vitamins, getting about 40 oz of fluids plus about 40-50g of protein shakes each day.

  24. Question for all of you post-op ladies & gents! Do you have recommendations for compression garments, girdles, panties or belts? I hear they are very helpful for pain and swelling. Any advice or opinions from those who have used them? Congratulations to all of you who braved the surgery to get healthy. My sleeve procedure is scheduled for May 16 so I'm trying to prepare. Thanks so much in advance! xoxo

I had VSG 3/25/19. I lost 15 pounds in first couple of weeks but not an ounce since. I am getting over 60g of protein, drinking my water and walking. Getting frustrated. Is this common?

I’m 5 weeks post op. 3/11 sleeve. I’ve lost maybe 14 pounds. I’ve lost 5 inches in my waist. I lost 10 the week after surgery. Gained back 5. Relost that plus a few more. I haven’t lost anything in a week. I eat about 600 calories a day. 80+ protein 10 carbs max. I don’t go to the gym but I do work two jobs. I only get about 6000 - 7000 steps a day on average. I poo MAYBE once a week. I’m not sure what to do. Do I up my calories to 800? I go to the dr on 4/24. I’ve got a lot of questions for him. I was losing more before surgery. Help!

Hello I had surgery on the 16th and I’m just curious if anyone else has ever had this. I have carpal tunnel but it hasn’t been bothering me much lately. However the last 24 hours my hands have been throbbing worse than the surgery pain. Any ideas? I think it’s from all the IV fluids they gave in the hospiTal but I’m not forsure.. compression socks on my hands and heating pad helps but still pretty painful. Any other ideas?

  31. Ugh. First time this has happened. I mashed up a hard boiled egg with a bit of light mayo, slowly took about 3 bites and felt like I had eaten a whole pizza! Stopped eating, of course, but it has been 1.5 hours and I still feel yucky. Does this mean I can't tolerate eggs? How long before this gross feeling goes away? (I'm 23 days post op, and still in the puree stage.)

16 days after surgery and I have lost 17 lbs so far. They say at this stage of pureed mode you go into a plateau. I am hoping for miracle weight loss!!! Most lose between 30-40 lbs in the proceeding 3 months after surgery but I hope to exceed that!!!

  33. Started by chuckwalsh,

I'm not sure if this even should go here but it is to an extent a side effect of the surgery. For years I really couldnt work. I injured myself about four or so years ago and ended up becoming very sedentary and gained about 150 lbs or so.. just from not being able to walk.. and using food as a sort of unhealthy therapy.. I gained it all. Longish story short I've since having the surgery on the 22nd of October lost just about 100 lbs so far.. also I've been using the gym very regularly about 5-6 times per week. This has given me back alot of my mobility.. which is great.. but it also puts me into a place where I'm pretty sure I could work again.. and I have quite alo…

So I thought I had a solution - On my way to work I drink a Premier Protein shake and then take the pills, so I have at least something in my stomach when I take the pills. It went …

  35. I read a lot on here about people having so much restriction that it's still difficult to satisfy your protein requirements each day. Quite a few are lactose intolerant so it's not as simple as eating a protein bar or drinking a protein shake. Others are so sick of protein shakes that they're ready to do dire things! And still others have a lack of appetite (thank you surgery for doing your job--embrace it). But bottom line we ALL have personal responsibility to hack our own bad selves and figure out how to do what our surgeon and RD want us to do! I thought it might help to see just what it would take in a world where you are limited to 1/2c-1c of food per meal by v…

  38. I love eating out, and that’s going to continue to be something I enjoy to do after my surgery. I know it’s all about portion and making smart choices, but I would love to know anyone’s specific order when they go out to eat! I know a portion for us is 1/4 (or less!) of the amount served- has anyone found any specific meals that reheat well?

So I had my sleeve on May14 last year. But after about three weeks I started getting the sensation in my throat that my tonsils were swollen. Doc said prolly just anesthesia or allergies. Two weeks later still dealing with it. Went back and she prescribed a Z-pack for allergies/cold. Long story short I am experiencing this still. Anyone else deal with this issue? Or is this just something unrelated and coincidental?

Not the most fun topic to talk about, but I have been having bouts of watery diarrhea. It seems to come intermittently and I can't seem to link it to food, as it happens randomly. Today was pretty bad, and even trusted a fart I shouldn't have. My stomach has been burning and feeling just off. I'm 4 weeks post op tomorrow. Is this normal? I'm concerned I'm going to dehydrate.

Ok people.. I've asked my psychiatrist... my bariatric surgeon.. and 4 pharmacist...and got all different answers.. now I come to you in desperation. Has anyone been on cymbalta 60 mg.. pre op and post op.. I'm being told that I can open the capsule and take the beads of meds.. just don't chew them.. 2 pharmacist are saying not to open them at all since they are time released.. I have been on it for 8 years for depression and have NO intention on messing with it. I need advice from someone that's actually gone through it. Can it be done??????

I am 3 weeks post op gastric bypass. I wanted to see if anyone else is still experiencing extreme soreness in their stomach after surgery. My whole abdomen is so sore almost as if I have been doing sit-ups and it hurts to turn over in bed at night. I had been doing 30 minutes of walking 1 week post op and it was fine. The only things that I have done differently lately was I recently started a soft diet and I also have started back to work. Also can anyone tell me how long it takes until your stomach actually feels normal again without pain?

  44. Started by Starry*Night,

I just saw my bariatric surgeon for my 5 week post op visit today. I asked him when I'd be able to eat a larger serving size, and he said: Plan on eating 2 oz of protein indefinitely, and up to 1 oz of veggies with it. Now this surprised me - in my literature from the hospital group (which he's the medical director of), it says to be eating 4-6 oz at this point. He recommends smaller portions but eating more frequently. Now I don't mind this too much, I'm just surprised. I get down 2 oz easily, and at 2 oz, I never feel that restriction so I never quite feel satisfied. He said if I never eat more than 2 oz, I won't stretch my stomach. "Stretching" the stoma…

Wondering what everyone's experience has been with taking your prescribed medications immediately after your surgery. I am on two different antidepressants and can't take several weeks off from taking them right after my sleeve surgery. Has anyone had any experience with this? Surgeon said if it goes down the esophagus it will fit in the stomach. But I don't think he meant the day after surgery? Any words of advise are welcome.

  46. Hello everyone this is my first time on here. My question is that i am having pain since Friday right below my breast bone like my sternum area it is tender to the touch and hurts whenever i move it gets worse when i eat almost to the point where i cant move. I already have had my gallbladder out before i had my bypass surgery. I recently had 3 ulcers but my last scope showed that those had cleared up about a week ago. I am 5 months post op and have lost 116lbs. I am completely stumped on what could be causing this pain. If anyone has had anything similar or if they know any information about this please share as i am very frustrated.

  47. Hey everyone. I am still pretty new to this. I am just a plethora of questions now a days haha. I am exactly 3 weeks and 2 days post op via gastric bypass. From my heaviest of 304 I am now down to 268 pounds. Yes it is nice but I still feel like I see no difference ☹. Others tell me they see a huge difference. I know when it comes to ourselves it is hard to see a difference and we are always our own worst enemy. I know a handful of people who have had this surgery and they tell me 6 months out I will see a gigantic difference. How was it for all of you guys? ???

  49. Hi Guys! Can any of you share your experience from getting sleeved at a lower weight? My Surgery is May4th and I am nervous and am wondering if I will even lose. Can someone please tell me their experience? How were their losses? How long did it take to lose? Where are you now?

  50. Started by PudgeBeGone,

So I had gastric bypass on March 27th. Within the first week I lost 25 lbs. But the past week I haven’t lost anything. Did any of you stop loosing weight for a short period then start loosing again? I guess it just kinda bothers me a bit because I don’t understand why I’ve stopped loosing weight already. I haven’t been eating anything just pushing liquids.
