POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by BlueIGT,

I searched on here but all the numbness that seems to come up has to do with legs. I am wondering if anyone else had any numbness near any of their incisions? About 2 inches below one of my incisions I have like a 4 x 4 inch area of complete numbness and was wondering if you had it did it go away? Edit: I had googled it on my phone earlier but I did it for gastric bypass specifically and got no definite answer. I just googled it for general surgery and it's common and hopefully will go away.

I finally feel back to myself. I'm off all pain meds and nausea meds. I've been sleeping great ! I'm down 20 lbs (7pre op 13 post op) I have my 1 week FU tomorrow and I'm hoping since I've had a great fluid intake I'll be moved to purees. ?????? I have 6 little scars and they all seem to be healing nicely so far [emoji4][emoji4]

Today a coworker just flat out asked if I had WLS. I haven't told anyone, and want to keep this private. I told her no, and I felt a little weird about denying it. I was really uncomfortable and I thought it was rude. She is very gossipy and I'm sure now she will be discussing this with others. I wish people would mind their own business.

So I was just curious if anyone else was experiencing what I am currently experiencing. So during the classes everyone said that I had to be careful after surgery because your body doesn't realize that it can't handle what it used to. However I feel like my body knew right away because I AM NEVER HUNGRY and when I say never I mean NEVER. In fact I feel as though the thought of eating makes me nauseous. I could drink all day till the cows come home but eating is a whole other story. Maybe its because it takes so long or that I'm sooooooo tired all the time but like is or has anyone else experienced/experiencing this? Does this get better?

  5. Started by Swanton_Bomb,

WLS has been a mind-f___ for me. Yesterday I had a spa day and they had these little brownie cubes and i ate two. They were very small, like dice. I estimated the calories and tracked them as best as I could, and I was within my total calorie limits. Later that night I kept thinking about it and was filled with unreasonable panic and dread. I felt fat, and while completely illogical I almost felt like the scale was going to ballon up this morning. I kept feeling my fat and felt bigger. Intellectually I know 3,500 calories equals a pound, but I couldn't wrap my head around facts. Another weird thing is that I get nervous when the scale doesn't move, and oddly enough, …

  6. I had my surgery on Wednesday this week and got discharged last night. The pain in my stomach feels like a combination of gas and swelling--like I was punched in my stomach 1,000 times or did 1,000 stomach crunches. Any idea how long this swollen feeling and gas will last? Is it normal to feel like this for a few weeks? A week? Just trying to figure out what the "normal" is for the tummy pain.

  7. Howdy, I had bypass on 1/30/19 and was sent home the very next day. I immediately thought it was odd that I now have a large indention on the right side of my stomach with an incision in it. When I lie down the dent goes away. It’s extremely painful and gets warm to the touch. I’m almost 3 weeks post op and the indention and pain hasn’t subsided at all. I called/emailed/ and visited my dr and he said he may have hit a nerve while closing up or closed it too tightly and to give it time. I’m on round the clock liquid Tylenol and nerve blockers and am discouraged and frustrated by the lack of improvement. I extended my leave from work because It’s too painful to sit on th…

  9. I am finally ready for my tummy tuck. Yeah Me... I Did It!!! My surgeon suggested getting a "Tummy Board" for additional abdominal support while healing. What is this? What is its official name? How much are they? Where can I get one? Does anyone have any other suggestions? What did work / didn't work for them? Thank you everyone for answering these questions for me. nahane33@yahoo.com

I was sleeved on 2/4. I have made it thru the surgery pain and the abdominal soreness pretty well but yesterday I started having pain in or behind my belly button. There is no lap site there so it's not like it's a surgical site issue. Has anyone had this problem, did it go away, what is it? Help please.

  11. Started by freidaboat,

Hello, I just had the gastric sleeve about 72 hours ago and because of the pain and nausea I am finding it difficult to get my water intake and my protein intake where I was told it should be. Am I right that I should be focusing more on water? At this point, I feel like I'm failing miserably on both ends. Any advice would help. Thanks everyone.

  12. Has anyone else experienced this my family can eat something or be eating something and it will make me so nauseous??? It’s horrible? Does it get better?

  13. Started by Chrisb428,

I am 6 mos post op and noticing a large increase in hunger and what feels like a loss of restriction. I am wondering how much any of you were eating, or how much i should be able to eat at 6 mos out? I know each person and stomach is different, just trying to get a gauge of where the average might be so I know if i should be concerned.

I’m excited about my grocery store find yesterday. First off, I live alone and left overs tend to get thrown away. Cooking for 1 sucks. I was walking around Kroger yesterday and decided to check out the fresh seafood selection (even though I’m still on liquids). They have the perfect thing for me! They have shrimp skewers with 5 medium shrimp for $1 per skewer. This will be perfect for when I am able to advance my diet to regular foods. In fact 1 skewer will probably get me a couple meals.

I was looking if anyone can tell me which approved frozen meals you all eat when too busy to cook. I am recommitting to diet and am waiting for a rerun cal from my nutritionist. In the mean time I thought I would come back to this community and they back to using my tool properly! Thanks for any suggestions of approved and favorite frozen meals!

  17. Started by lgredvig,

That was a rough time. The surgery went text book according to the surgeon but I woke up with the worst nausea. I was vomiting (air) for about 6 hours post op. They gave me several types of meds to help but told me the more I rest the better I'll feel. They kept me on medication for nausea and pain until about 10-11 the next day. Then I was able to get up and walk around. Did laps and then would fall back asleep. I'm so much better feeling today. Anyone who tries to say this is the "easy" way has lost their minds. [emoji36] definitely harder than I expected.

I am curious as to how many members on here have been obese since childhood, just since adulthood, or just for the past handful of years. How do you think that has shaped your expectations of surgery and your body image? I have only been obese for about 8 years. In my FB group, a lot of the women struggle with getting down to a smaller size because they aren't used to the compliments or they feel uncomfortable. I was "warned" prior to surgery that my brain won't catch up to my body size for a while. I have the opposite issue. I MISS the attention from men. My brain still sees me as skinny, so when I walk past a mirror I am shocked at my large size. I think that has …

I am 16 days out from my sleeve. I’ve been doing so good. Handling the new foods food. I woke up this morning with such a full feeling right under my breasts in the middle. It won’t go away. It’s so much pressure and kind of hurts when I breathe. What is it? And what can I do to make it go away? It’s so uncomfortable!!!!!!!

Hi all, I’m looking for some advice on how long from surgery you went from liquids to mush? I’m nine days post op, the pain has settled, but I now have terrible insomnia. It’s sometimes five or six am before I drift off. I’ve tolerated fluids well & not a single episode of vomiting. My consultant has said mush after two week, did anyone try it sooner? Thanks in advance

Just wondering if anyone out there chose to have plastic surgery to remove excess skin after surgery. I still have a way to go with my weight loss but I have a lot of excess skin on my arms that really bothers me! Thinking about it in the future.

I notice a lot of people stop using shakes. I still have to have at least one 30 gram shake a day, and often some other form of supplement like 1/2 a protein bar, some protein chips or a bariatric cocoa to get to 60 grams. At what point did you stop using shakes and supplements and got your protein only from natural foods?

  27. I didn't start gaining a lot of weight until I was about 40. I'm now 49. I was pretty fit until then. Through the years as the weight piled on I realized people started treating me differently. They weren't as friendly as they were when I was thin. It wasn't my friends or family but the public. I was wondering if any of you who have lost a bit of weight can tell a difference in the way people treat you now.

  28. Started by Sheribear68,

Hello all, I’ve got a question about calorie goals in the first 2 weeks post surgery. I was given a calendar and it says I’m to be on all liquids for the first 2 weeks and that I need to make sure I get in 3 proteins, but that’s really all the guidelines I have. To be honest, I’m lucky if I get in 2 proteins a day (who can actually consume 6 oz in one sitting) and I’m worried that I might sabotage future weight loss if I don’t get in enough right now. I logged my calories for the past 2 days (was sleeved on 2-6) and I’ve consumed 330 calories. That’s for BOTH days. ??? Anyone else in the same boat?

  29. I’m not normally home. I work two jobs. My 20 year old high functioning autistic son and my messy beagle have let the house get dirty and I am behind on laundry. Will I be up to doing laundry while I’m home and mopping floors or vaccuuming? I know I won’t be able to move furniture but I’m hoping I can do basic house stuff or I’ll go insane sitting around looking at it. If not, I’ll have to take a day off work and really work on it before surgery or I’ll go nuts.

  30. Hello! I'm currently one month post op and have noticed that I am getting considerably leaner skin already, it's not all puffy like it use to be. Which makes me realize that I need lotions and creams, and whatever I need to use to help my skin go through this changing time. I'm hoping to have it bounce back the best it can. I am realistic, but I'm hoping there are some good products that can at least help it along. I'm looking for body, face, neck, and any other targeted lotions, creams, or treatments you may have tried. And if they were a win or a fail. Thank you to whoever takes the time to help me out ❤️

  31. Hey!!! So iv seen that im able to eat a bit more then I have been!? Why is this?! Im 5 months out of gastric sleeve. Eating has become a lot more tolerable. But Iv been able to eat a bit more. I usually cant seem to toss down more then maybe 4 oz or so. The other day I was able to drink at least 6 oz with no issue!!! :0 I know I know Im dramatic! lol But yeah Iv also been on a stall, iv lost maybe 20 pounds in the last three months. I know Its going to slow down but this fast this soon? Iv lost 82lbs since surgery. I just need so clarification you guys!

I'm 2 weeks out and my surgeon told me to move to soft food. Cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, chili and ground meats are some of the food I can have. I have no calorie goal or carb goal. What should I be aiming for? I dont want to mess this up. Just afraid to start real food.

Hi, for all you ladies out there who are still visited by aunt flow every month, how was it affected after surgery? I feel like a mess in that department and am not sure what is going on. My mood is sour and I want to bite everyone's head off so that seems like PMS but could just be that I'm a !@#$ If you don't mind sharing something so personal than I would appreciate the advice. 34. I had my nutrition classes and have the recommended daily total of fluids and protein. I know it's initially sips to get it in and the goal of 64oz, 60g protein. So my question is did you use a shot glass for 1-2 oz and set a timer to make sure you drank that every hour? Did you use a phone app or timer? I do know aobut the calcium chews separate form the daily vitamin. Do I not take the daily vitamin with a shake that's high in Calcium, Should I take that with water? Any suggestions?

Hello....I am two weeks post op and my nutritionist wants me to up my calories to between 600-700 max but I am hovering between 450-500 right now. She suggested a cup of fairlife milk, which is all well and good except I don't think I can drink it plain. Has anyone had the chocolate fairlife milk this early post op? I was thinking maybe I could try that. Or anyone have any simple suggestions (besides making a shake w/ fairlife because I am sticking with my one premier shake a day)....I thought of trying to find a higher calorie yogurt but i really like the Siggi's I have been eating or Fage. I can add a little calories here and there, but it would be good to have a g…

Hello, so I know that this is bad but I'm wondering if post-op after a few months if I wanted to try the keto diet, can we have meats such as sausage, pastrami, steak? Obvioulsy that won't be my entire diet it'll be mixed in with lots of non starchy vegetables but wanted to know if those meats were allowed.

Hi all! I am getting my sleeve a week from today and October 17 cannot get here fast enough! I was wondering about your opinions on owning a scale. I do not currently own one. I wasn’t planning on buying one, because 1) I don’t want to obsess if the numbers aren’t moving 2) will I know I’m stalling if the numbers aren’t moving? 3) I am doing this to get healthy, to learn to run, to have an exercise routine become a part of my permanent lifestyle, which is so much more than what a scale can tell me. BUT I can see the downsides- will I let myself get sloppy if I’m not holding myself accountable to that scale? Will I miss out on moments of feeling proud and exci…

Hey everyone! Just checking in to get your all's opinion, do you all think this wound looks infected? Yesterday I noticed a drop or two of pus coming from the wound, and so I immediately went to the emergency room where they said that wasn't quite normal but my infection values weren't high nor did I have any kind of fever so they said just to keep it clean and watch it. Tonight it seems to have gotten a bit worse and now it looks like it has more pus and also feels a bit more painful. There's not a whole lot of redness around it that wasn't there before, but I don't know if I should go back again in the morning? Does this look in any way normal? I had my surgery on the 1…

  40. Started by 247598,

Hello! So I was sleeved on 1/28/19 and the first few days were really rough for me getting fluids, especially ANY protein at all. Then I came to realize that my new stomach, at least for the time being, cannot tolerate whey! (Which was obviously a wonderful, vomit-filled experience). I recently discovered fairlife lactose-free protein milk and it has been an absolute life saver, and is allowing me to get at least 60g, woo hoo! Now, a week out, I’m able to drink water pretty “normally” (no chugging of course but normal sized sips) and fuller liquids a little slower, but still pretty normal. Unfortunately, today was my first day at work and while absentmindedly scrolli…

  42. Started by mousecat88,

On recommendation from the bariatric nurse, I drank some magnesium citrate because I had not had a bowel movement in 14 days. I cannot truly explain the pain I experienced. I thought my stomach had ruptured and considered calling 911. It felt like an open flame was held to my stomach. It's been well over an hour and while the pain has dissipated some, I am still in pain. Can anyone recommend anything to soothe this? The office is closed and I don't think it justifies an emergency visit. Has anyone experienced this? This was definitely in the top 3 most painful things I've experienced in my life. On the upside... I did use the bathroom, profusely. I did spit up a lot of sa…

  44. Started by Jazzy1125,

Let me start by saying, that on Monday I plan on calling my surgeon and getting his approval for my thoughts, but i wanted to know what you all thought as well. I am quite frankly tired of my bathroom usage issues, or lack thereof, even following the surgeons direction. I feel like 90% of my bathroom issues is because i am not eating enough to go to the bathroom, meaning.. I am still at 100% protein outside of the carbs in my Protein shakes... I am not getting any thing else in my stomach other than protein. Whether it be tuna, salmon, eggs, protein waffles (made only with protein powder).. I am too full before i finish the protein i dont have room for anything else.…

  46. hey guys, long time no post. i got the sleeve on jul 25 and have lost 102lbs since my highest weight (march 2018). i’m starting to get a little discouraged. i know after 6 months the weight loss tends to slow down but i’m having a really hard time. i’m not feeling much restriction and i feel as though i’m binging again. for me, binging has always been about the choices and the attitude, not necessarily the amount of food i eat. for instance, the other day i had a slice of pizza... which would normally be an okay thing to do but i ate it in secret and felt extremely guilty (and not that great) afterwards. i’m just looking for support/people who are in the same boat…

I've been struggling since starting soft foods. It takes me forever and a day to get in one bottle of water and having to wait 30 minutes to eat something that may or may not come up is taking it's toll. I'd rather drink my meals at this point but my surgeon said no more protein shakes at this point and to try eating. It's frustrating because I know I'm dehydrated and getting 60-80 grams of protein in seems all but impossible at this point without at least one shake. I'm going to call my surgeon and let him know my concerns but do y'all have any tips?

  48. Lots of people complain that they have a 3 week stall and lots of people seem to feel depressed and regret having had surgery. I think this is a great explanation as to why. One of the challenges some patients face after weight loss surgery is a condition described as the hibernation syndrome. This is a group of symptoms that include feeling fatigued, depressed and lack of motivation to do any physical activity. Patients often feel upset and become plagued by thoughts that the surgery was as mistake.. This can be quite alarming to patients recovering from the surgery and recognizing the signs assist in getting over this stage in recovery. Hibernation syndrome is…

But my chest feels like I swallowed a ball. I can’t drink a lot because it just sits there and almost feels like it wants to come back up.

So I know this isn't a fun topic but immediately after post-op I had lots of bleeding in the stool and had to spend another night in the hospital. Now, in the support group that I am in with other patients from my doctors office, a lady said that she had a bowel obstruction. I wanted to know if anyone else has gone through this, how to avoid this from happening, and if I should be concerned. Obviously the bloody stool caused for concern and that's why I spent another night at the hospital but I ma mainly worried about being at risk for a bowel obstruction.
