POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Bobbiep,

Hello all, I had my vsg on December 10th. The pain has sucked, but over the past 3 days or so the pain is located only in one spot. It's in my lower right belly. It comes and goes depending on my movement and type of of movement and it's a sharp shooting pain. It starts about 2 inches below my largest incision and shoots down and to the right. This pain is more unbearable than the original post surgery pain was. Any idea what this could be? Thanks in advance! Bobbie

I am had the sleeve done 12 days ago and actually commented how easy it has been for me. Well here we are day 12 and I feel so much gurgling and reflux in my stomach and the back of my throat when I eat my creamy soups. I shouldn’t have spoke too soon.

Hey guys, I’m only 2 days post-op and let me just say the last 2 days have been hell for me. Uncontrollable nausea is the absolute worst for me. The night after my surgery I could not stop vomiting blood. It was a 5 hour ordeal and it made my abdomen all the more sore. I can deal with the gas and the soreness, but the nausea is making this process so much more difficult. I can’t even get my vitamins down without feeling the need to throw up. As a matter of fact, the only thing I ate today was a popsicle (and that took 1 hour to eat). I can’t take the smallest sips of water without feeling like I need to vomit. I have been getting my 30 minutes of walking in, but tha…

  5. I had a smooth recovery and I have had fantastic losses so far, but I am struggling so much with fluid and protein. I have a 30 gram shake a day but I am having trouble fitting in the rest of my protein. Today I made a chicken sausage for dinner and could only eat half, and that was forcing myself. Veggies are out of the question because I just don’t have room. I felt like I turned a corner this week with how much I could sip at a time but water is still tough. When can I expect protein and water to be a little easier? It seems like when I do well with fluid I skimp in protein and vice versa. I follow the 30 minute rule but often I feel like it needs to be closer to an ho…

I never thought I'd feel this way, but here I am. I'm 17 days post op; I start pureed foods tomorrow. I'm still struggling with getting my liquids down for the day. My weight loss stalled 3 days post op, and still hasn't moved. I'm starting to regret my decision to have this surgery. I know I shouldn't - I know I'll be happy down the road - but this stall scares me, and I'm so tired of not being able to hydrate properly and not having energy to do anything. I'm working as hard as I can to get my 64 oz down every day, but right now protein and water is all that's on my mind all day and it feels like food is ruling my life even though I'm hardly having any of it. …

I am two years out of surgery (gastric sleeve) lost about 120 pounds and reached my ideal weight for my Height. But through my weight loss journey I have developed a serious eating disorder ( bulima) which has affected my health badly, I have severe anemia that requires iron IV/ venfer ( took about 15 treatment so far still has five to go) and a serious vitamin b12 Deficiency that requires monthly and sometimes weekly shots. I have never shared this with anyone, not even my doctor, I am sooo scared and worried for my family but at the same time I am absolutely terrified of being over weight again Please advise

Help, Please! I had the gastric sleeve on Thursday so I'm six days out. I'm doing well, hardly any pain, getting my fluids, most days my protein and waking. Go me! BUT here's my worry and my question! Last night everyone was being ready to go off to a Christmas party as i was mixing up my evening protein shake. It was eleven ounces. Anyway, chaos in the house everybody wanting something or telling me something blah blah blah...I'm not paying much attention and then i realise in about ten minutes time I had consumed that entire shake! Then i started freaking out because before surgery we are told we could hold two ounces at a time and that would increase over time …

  11. Started by Swanton_Bomb,

I’m wasting so much food and money these days because I am trying new things and sometimes I just hate it too much to choke it down, plus packages are so big! The other day I fed some very expensive scallops to the dog because they tasted funny to me...my husband said they were delicious and tasted just the way they always have when I have made them. I wound up eating string cheese for dinner instead! I think I’m going to stick to shrimp, rotisserie chicken and eggs to avoid wasting more food, since I still like those things. The thing I like most is multi grain toast with peanut butter...allowed on my plan but not terribly high in protein. I’m going to try the 14 gram P2…

  12. I had RNY 72 hours ago. Surgery went perfect and I stayed only one night. I was able to to get in my fluids and no nausea. Pain was minimal. But this hunger, I am literally in tears throughout the day because I’m so hungry. Most everything I’ve read says people can hardly get liquids down because they are so full, I’m the opposite. Did my surgeon perform the procedure correctly? Will I eventually have the sensation of getting full on appropriate portions? That was my reason for surgery, I am always hungry. The sleeve would have removed the hunger hormone e but I was not eligible due to reflux. Please let me know if you experienced this and what it was like weeks or months…

Ok people have talked about this before, but I wanted to share or put my 2 cents and my experience in. I'm past 8 months, 253 days post op to be exact. I wasn't a huge drinker but when I drank it was usually more than 2 drinks, so the long and short of it was I always got a hefty buzz or drunk, but I never drank unless I went out so I didn't see it as a "problem". But it was classic binge drinking when I did drink. Post surgery- after my ok to drink , I had some wine, first glass I didn't get drunk any faster, halfway through second I could be good but since we can't eat AND drink then why ruin my buzz, right? I eat well, I drink my water, I quit smoking, so I'd have…

I had Lap band to Gastric sleeve surgery and have bad back spasms. I was given muscle relaxers and 2 cortisone shots. Sometimes the back spasms can be very sudden and painful. Has this happened to anyone on here? Could this be due to the Gastric Sleeve or the spinal cord bulges?

I'm 9 months out. And I'm starting to get worried I've ruined my stomach. I've eaten several times so much that I puke and puke until everything is gone. It hurts super bad. But now I'm noticing that I can eat more and more and dont feel full. Just like when I was pre op. Or I can eat, then come back an hour later and eat more. Anyone who have any advice on this? Did I ruin my stomach? I'm terrified I wont hit my goal weight. I'm only 20 lbs away, but I just am not losing anymore weight.

  18. Hey everyone I had my gastric bypass surgery Tuesday December 18th. I survived and everything went well woot woot! I got discharged today and I am finally home. They had me on morphine at the hospital via pca pump. Then they eventually started giving me percocets. I am not going to lie when the effects of the meds wear off I am miserable and I only have 2 days worth of hydrocodone. How did you guys deal with the pain afterwards? I am not looking forward to my pain medication running out ??

Waiting to board a flight and flying for the first time since my 7/30/18 surgery. Curious to hear from others about their post-op flying experiences! What was different? What was exciting? What was the same? What still sucked??

I am 4 weeks post op and I weight weekly. I gained 2 pounds this week. How is this possible when I am only taking in 500 or less calories a day? This is frustrating to me as I am down 20 pounds since starting my liquid diet, I thought the weight would come off quicker.

So I sort of thought soup would be a good meal choice, and I chose a soup with mini chicken meatballs for protein, and I strained out the pasta. Dumb move. I guess it is sort of why you can't wat and drink at the same time. I got filled up far too fast, before I was satisfied and before I could consume enough protein. So I guess blended soups like split pea are probably a better choice. Oh well. I do love that Italian wedding soup though!

I had the sleeve on 12/10. Any suggestions for full liquid?? I am tired of Creamy Soup!! I am down 23lbs and feel great finally have my energy up but I am so tired of liquids! My post-op visit until the 28th!!

  25. So far, what has been tougher than you thought it would be, and what has been easier? Hunger and resisting sweets has been easier than I thought it would be. I also had less pain and fatigue than I thought. What is harder than I thought is drinking water, not eating and drinking at the same time and getting enough protein. How about you?

I've been craving a salty crunch - chips specifically, which I obviously shouldn't have. Even normal crackers seem like a "no" because they are a simple carb, which are not approved for my diet until 6 months post-op (and recommended only in very limited quantities after that) so... what can I eat? I don't want a substitute like celery or carrots, I mean something chip or cracker like. My biggest issue is the carbs, because mine are to remain limited. I'm also supposed to stay in the 500 calories per day range for a while, so indulging in crackers is difficult with that restriction as well, but that will be increased in time. Does anyone have any suggestions for som…

So, I'm 2 months post-op and have a rash on my abdomen and the side of my breasts. It isn't where any of my skin overlaps, so I don't think it's that. I've tried cortizone and nystatin (a powder for fungal infections my doc gave me a while back when I had bad heat rash). No help. Anyone else have this post-op? Any suggestions?

  35. Started by Anglkrys2,

I am 1 weeks out. And my gut feeling was not to do it! I had a terrible time with the band and this is no different! I even asked my surgeon AND nutritionist about my health issues BEFORE and they assured me I’d be fine! I have IBS (now terrible diarrhea and a fissure), migraines (can’t drink anything with artificial sweeteners so I’m dehydrated-water makes me vomit due to the metallic taste in my mouth)! I am hungry, in pain, and dehydrated and the only thing they want me to do is go to ER! I can’t spend 4 months in the ER because I can’t drink water or anything else!!! I have 4 kids! I should have just accepted my body for what it was! Seriously sick of myself …

Eggs are good, but a pain to make on a weekday morning. I can't stomach a protein shake or yogurt that early in the day. I tried high protein oatmeal, but it is so filling that I can barely have any, and that just isn't enough protein. I have been doing a thin slice of Dave's Killer 21 grains and seeds bread (bread is ok on my plan) with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter. That goes down well, but it is only 7 grams of protein, leaving me a lot of make-up later in the day. So what do you eat for breakfast?

  38. Started by GrmCruz,

Hello guys, I had the gastric sleeve surgery November 20, 2018. And I’m 29 pounds down. The day of surgery I was on my period lightly and ever since I’ve had the surgery I’ve been bleeding every single day. It’s now December 17th and I’m still bleeding. I have Polycysistic Ovarin Syndrome and I’ve always had long periods but I don’t understand why I am bleeding so much if the surgery is supposed to help regulate your period considering the Hormonal issue. I would please like some clarity on this as it’s giving me a lot of anxiety.

Has anyone ever used Magic Mouthwash? I have to pick up a rx for it later for my esophagus/stomach, and it is made of magnesium, aluminum, an antacid, and viscous lidocaine. Is it going to make my stomach numb somehow and will I be able to feel foods/drink/sensation of fullness?

It's been 7 months and oh so many biopsies and tests later and I'm still nauseous after ANY food and sometimes after just water. I throw up at least once a day but want to and try to control it everytime. I think I've become bulimic. What do I do?

  43. Started by Swanton_Bomb,

I have lost about 1/3 of the weight I need to lose and some people are starting to notice. Oddly enough, as desperate as I was for this sort of attention prior to weight loss, it makes me uncomfortable now. I am still so large and the compliments just remind me of how obese I am and how I was even fatter. I guess I never really wanted people to notice me losing, I just sort of wanted to be normal and unnoticed...not noticed for being obese, or for losing. It's weird.

I am 6 day post, I am kinda scared because I feel like a million dollars. I have felt this way from day one. Am I in for a surprise? My husband saw and dragged me to the store and I’m having an anxiety attack about even trying on clothes. I don’t know why or what to do. ??? Im 16 weeks post op, and 66 lbs down.

Hello all, I've toyed with posting about this because I don't want to be a downer to everyone. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on November 20th. I am in my second week post-op and am in my first week of all liquids and protein shakes. I have been doing the protein shakes with the liquids since Sunday (four days ago). I am absolutely miserable. I find myself sleeping later that is normal for me, I have no motivation to do anything, and I do not want to drink anything. I find that I can cry at the drop of a hat, especially whenever someone asks me how I am doing. My next appointment with me doctor is on December 11, when I will be able to move onto the pureed stage. I …
