POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Astarisborn,

Hi ya'll. I'm kinda having a hard time right now and no one around me seems to understand. I just don't feel happy with my progress. I've gotten some compliments and I notice a slight difference but I still feel like I should be losing weight much faster. I'm almost 6 months out of surgery. I had surgery may 22nd and I weighed 363, I now weigh 285 and It seems like I should be wayyy smaller than that by now. I have an appointment with my doctor in 2 weeks and I'm afraid to see him because I feel that he may be disappointed in me. I sometimes workout and then ill stop for weeks at a time. My doc told me to never count calories or weigh things because thats like a die…

  2. Started by stibitzal,

I had surgery 11/21 and was only supposed to stay one night however it hurts so bad to eat or drink that they kept me another night. I am in extreme pain and everything makes me nauseous I have been prescribed tremidol and promenthazine but every time I even try and take the medicine I vomit. I’m struggling so hard with water. I’m literally in tears everytime I throw up and beating myself up for even getting surgery

Im only 8 months out , and I’m losing weight slowly . My twin sister got her gastric sleeve a month after & she already lost 100 pounds in 7 months . Is anyone going through the same thing I am ? Started weight: 290 Current weight: 229

So I’m back after all my tales of woe today I have to bring my kids to a Halloween party. Interestingly I have ZERO interest in candy or any other treats so yay for that! I know alcohol is discouraged post op is it because people have a higher likelihood of becoming alcoholics? Would one glass of wine be disastrous? I don’t drink often but the stress of everything is making a glass of wine very appealing...

Over the past month, I can’t seem to drink room temp water anymore. Feels like a rock hitting my stomach Looking for suggestions other then ice water which can be tough on my belly sometimes too. I have to make sure I’m hitting my water intake Thanks

Hi eveyone, Do you have an opinion about the BariMelts Vitamins? I see on their website they have a great offer: one of each BariMelts® formulation – Multivitamin, Calcium (Citrate), B-12 Plus, Iron + Vitamin C all for $39.99. That's about what I paid from another bariatric site just for the mulitvitamins. Thanks, Carol

I had surgery 2 weeks ago. The last two days when I eat I get dizzy sweaty and feel awful about 10 min after. Then I layed down and couldn’t wake up for 2 hr. My blood sugar is ok. Does anyone know what causes this and what to do

  8. So I just ate dinner 20 minutes ago and I’m super nauseous. I was sleeved on October 24th. I have been fine eating until right now. I may have ate too much but felt it too late. I’m scared to throw up but feel like it’s the only thing that will make me feel any better. Is it dangerous for me to throw up?

I am 13 months out from gastric sleeve. Just the past week I’ve developed pain in my upper left chest after eating or drinking. The same feeling I had immediately AFTER gastric sleeve - waiting for gas to leave my body. Anyone else have this issue a year after? I’m trying to figure out what I’ve eaten -maybe it’s coffee?

How are you all handling Thanksgiving? I will be on thin purees and I have decided to fake the flu and not attend. I have not disclosed my surgery to anyone except husband and mom, and faking it is going to be too hard two weeks out. I think I will host Christmas so I can ensure that there is something suitable for me to eat and also be able to keep busy and people won't notice how much I'm eating.

  11. Started by ZionGirl,

Im scheduled for sleeve surgery end of Dec. Ive watched several videos from sleevers and will ask my surgeon this at my pre op appt in a few weeks, and this might sound foolish, but since we have to wait a half hour to drink after eating and can only SIP not gulp water (for life), if we choose less expensive vitamins over chewables forms, do we just sip the water when we take the vitamin? Or is it a couple of sips with each vitamin pill? And we are to drink 64 oz of water a day and thats sipping only, a half hour after meals. So is a cup of coffee Im seeing sleevers have, with a pure protein shake as an option for a protein liquid breakfast (when they dont want a solid on…

  13. Started by Yolie1977,

I was sleeved on 11/21, I’m so weak. I don’t understand why. Everything else is fine. I’m trying to drink my amount that I was told (which I find really hard). And will I have to drink in sips forever? My stomach starts to spasm (best way I can describe it) if I drink more than a sip.

  14. I got sleeved on Thursday. Sugar free clears since Tuesday (only broth, SF jello and lots of water), no more than 200 calories each day. I advanced to full liquids today and was able to choke down about 2oz. of protein shake. Upon arriving home today I weighed myself and I was 3 lbs. heavier than I was on my surgery morning. I was urinating a lot so I didn't think I was retaining water but it has to be that. It certainly wasn't from excess calories. Is this typical?

  15. I thought I had made it through unscathed. Since my surgery on the 12th I have not had any issues with my stomach. No nausea, no cramps, no hunger pains. I was actually taking in liquids pretty easily...two 33 oz bottles a day with no problem. Suddenly yesterday my stomach started having issues with any liquid I took in. I've tried cold, room temp, warm and hot. It's a twisting discomfort when the liquid hits my stomach...like a mini charlie horse. I've been plowing through and forcing myself to suffer through the pain, but it would suck if this is my future. Anybody else have a similar thing happen?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I need some in sight on vitamin patches. What does everyone else prefer? My surgeon gave us a list of vitamins to take the rest of our lives and they where all chewable. I bought some before surgery and tried them. I had to spit them out. I can not handle the taste. So I just purchased a package of vitamin patches off of the bariatric pal site. Anyone else use patches? Do they work well? I'm just concerned I want get the vitamins I need. I'm post op day 6 and I feel weak as it is. Thanks for any input.

Hello All - I had a RnY performed on 11/05. The first week home I lost 10 pounds - however; the last two days I’ve actually gained about 3 pounds. I’m still on liquids - and am shocked at the gain. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks!

I’m 5 days post op RNY. I have these sporadic pains in my stomach. Any idea of what they are?

  20. Started by insta_adventurer,

I learned today that traveling is tough with a restricted diet. Starbucks messed up my latte, so I had to toss it. Couldn’t find an acceptable protein shake on all of Detroit Airport. We had a nearly 4 hour layover and walked and walked looking for something! I ended up settling for some spicy chicken thing that was not on my diet and peanuts on the plane. So my question... what do y’all eat when you’re traveling by plane?

  21. Hey everybody. I’m new here and I’m wondering if any of you out there make a living on the road? I’m a professional musician, and I’ve been touring constantly for the last 15 years. I had the LapBand surgery in 2008. I weighed 425lbs, and lost just over 100lbs. Since then however, I gained a lot of it back. :( in 2017, I weighed 380lbs again. I’m pretty sure it was me that failed the band, but either way, I finally made it back to my surgeon to discuss options earlier this year. I’ve been working hard and I’m down to 318. I’m ready to take a new step, and have made the decision, along with my surgeon, to move forward with a revision surgery schedule now for Dec 12th. …

HI guys. I'm 3 months post op and I know hormones go wacko after surgery and all...but is anyone else experiencing post op holiday loneliness (or have you in the past?). I find my boyfriend half the time doesn't understand what I'm going through, though he tries, but sometimes it's overwhelming. Due to things not surgery related, I don't have family members. I wrote them off because they are terrible human beings. I have my 13 year old son and myself and a very select (VERY SELECT) handful of friends. I like the holidays but also hate them because it's a reminder of what I wish I had, but don't. Maybe I'm just hormonal...maybe I just need new friends. I don't know. I just…

  25. Hey! I’m almost 6 months out and just had a question for all of you veterans out there. Although I don’t eat near the same amount of food I did before, I don’t really find my appetite as suppressed as I thought it would be. I can easily eat a side Caesar salad with two chicken souvlaki sticks or over a cup of protein pasta. I mentally stop myself from eating until I’m full because I don’t want to overeat or stretch out my pouch (not sure if that’s a real thing or myth). For example, for breakfast, I always eat whole grain toast with peanut butter and half a banana on top because I kickbox afterwards and need the energy. I have eaten that with an egg omelette as wel…

What are you guys eating at 4 months post op? I’ve had trouble with eating things throughout this whole process because I pretty much don’t like much of anything :( chewing meat until it’s a mush has become so repulsive to me I end up spitting it out. I have no clue what to eat and I’m barely even getting 10 grams of protein a day. I’ve been craving a ham and cheese sandwich, has anyone had any experience with sandwiches? Please help! Thanks! :)

I am heading down to have a sleeve in the 17 of December. As I look at the board here I am not seeing a lot of folks in my situation. I am about 530 pounds right now and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who was closer to my size that could give me some insight into how weight loss went for them after surgery?

  28. Started by jh7005,

I just had my stomach dilated after the surgeon found a stricture. I have been having intense pain in my stomach and side ever since. Has anyone else had this? It hurts worse than after my sleeve surgery.

At 5 weeks out from surgery, I'm allowed 300 to 400 calories per day. At 3 months post op I can bump up to 500 calories "depending on workouts". This seems crazy low compared to others I've read about. I feel hungry all the time, I'm barely losing 2 pounds per week, and it's really hard to advance my diet and meet my minimum 60mg protein with only 400 calories. Workout days are rough, too, when I'm burning 550 calories per day and only taking in 400. There have been days I've cheated and eaten up to 550 calories on workout days because I'm starving. What are everyone else's caloric goals for this stage?

  30. Hello! So I am 1.5 years out from surgery, and have been getting sick with colds every 4-6 weeks. This started about 4 months after surgery, and when I get sick it clings on for about 1 week, or at times up to two weeks. It's the typical stuffy runny nose, cough and sore throat type cold you expect to get once or twice a year with a season change, but at least for the first few days of it I am prohibitively tired, as if I had mono. It is really causing problems - my job is getting tired of time off. I cannot stand to continue to be sick for 25% my life like this! I have spoken with my bariatric team about this, as well as the general doctors I see at the walk-in…

So I’m a week post op and sill in the clear liquid stage ugh. Starting full liquids Friday. I feel the need for flavors and texture already especially since I’m still feeding 3 kids and smelling their food and watching them eat. I’m not necessarily hungry it’s just a matter of wanting something and trying to break old habits. So today I chewed then spit out food just for the taste of it. I’m worried that’s gonna set me up to fail if I’m already trying to cheat. Anyone else do anything like this or eat before they were supposed to? How did it affect your progress? I’m also disappointed I’ve only lost 10 lbs post surgery.

  35. Hi! I’m new to this community. I just had surgery Friday (Feeling Great!) and I’m still only able to do broth, and water. How many days did it take for you all to get in those proteins? I’m wondering if I should push my intake or go with what my body is saying. The thought of a protein shake makes me want to puke! Any suggestions...

I was told there were 3 bulging discs in the spine, although i'm in pain in the back everyday. it feels like a cramping in the back, and it can be very painful. has anyone heard of this? its hard for me to sit down, and cold ice packs work on this pain. its very frustrating.

Hi :-) I am 2 years post op RNY and want to start taking the birth control pill again. I’ve heard people say that taking the pill is not a good idea as it wouldn’t be absorbed. Does anyone have any experience with this? Would anyone suggest crushing the pill before taking it, for better absorption? Does crushing the pill mean it will be absorbed easier? Any advice/past experiences shared would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'm 6 months out, had the sleeve, lost 47 lbs. Just had a new round of blood draw and i'm high on cholesterol. I'm not eating ANYTHING with cholesterol in it and it's 270. I know my PCP will want to put me back on meds for it and i'm dreading it. I'm sooooo sick of taking pills. I exercise almost every day. working with a personal trainer. what else can I do? I eat mostly chicken and turkey, and veggies. Feeling really down about this. All other lab #'s are good or really close to good.

Okay so I’ve lost 140 lbs in total... 100 since surgery in march... i get very light headed when standing though... sometimes worse than others... sometimes I get the whole tunnel vision thing... anyone else experienced this? It’s not every time... but almost very time I stand up out of the recliner or get out of bed too fast... does it go away with time as my body gets used to my new found mobility?

Today was my Sleeve surgery and I feel great (probably due to the pain pump). I am so excited to finally have taken such a positive step in my life. I can't wait to be able to sit in a chair without fear of breaking it. My son is about to turn two and now I can help to instill healthy eating habbits. I'm just so excited for the future. To share a success. I lost 20lbs from the liver shrink diet alone. Now just 50 more lbs and I'll be out of the 300's. Thanks for reading - Geo

  46. Ok so I keep reading about taste preferences changing after surgery- something you once loved to eat or drink and now cannot stand even the thought of it post op. Science can't explain it. Tell us your experience with this strange phenomenon....

Super weird topic, straight ahead! I am just over 5 months out from surgery and a few months back I noticed that sometimes, if I ate to fullness, I would sneeze (just once or twice) right after reaching fullness. I thought it was just a coincidence and so I mostly just ignored it after that, but last night I finally thought I should google it, to see if it was just my imagination, or if any other weirdos out there had experienced the same thing, and it turns out that not only have other people experience it, but it's an actual THING, with a name and everything! There is, apparently, a real medical condition called Snatiation (a portmanteau of sneezing+satiation) that …
