POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Brina1980,

Hello everyone I’m 5 months post op. I’m starting to experience a lot of hair loss. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on products or remedies I could use. Thanks

  2. Started by JaiRap,

I wanted to know if anyone could suggest some good yogurts? All the ones I’ve looked at are just way to high in sugar.

  3. Started by linlew,

Hey guys! First post here! So I know it's covered in other threads, but in different ways, so I figured I'd just rehash it here. Had my RNY on Tuesday morning; all went well (yay!), getting my fluids and protein in successfully on Day 4 and 5 (today). Also walking plenty each day. Body cavity gas pain has reduced a great deal, thankfully. . I've had a decent amount of bubbly bowels and passing gas, but no BMs yet. I took Miralax yesterday and today. I have a bowel regimen to follow given to me by my surgeon (Milk of Mag + Dulcolax suppository) should it be necessary. Curious when the collective mind here thinks the bowels need an additional pus…

  4. I am an account manager, total desk job. I was curious how long others were off work due to their surgery.

Today I woke up with a tender bellybutton. When I was showering I noticed that it is very hard and hot at the top. Anyone else experience this and or know if I need to see the Dr?

  6. I’m at the 6th day after surgery and my 2nd day of my cycle. I have fibroids so I bleed heavy. I feel horrible! So weak . I’m on a clear diet and It’s no enough to keep me going. I just doubled up on everything hopefully it will get me on my feet again.

  7. Started by Alesiadavis,

I am 4 weeks post sleeve. I have mucus that just won’t quit. I am not sure if this is because of the foods I am eating or a post op symptom. Has anyone any feedback?

  8. Started by Hoggles69,

Has anyone lost too much weight after RNY ? I’m nearly 18 months out and currently weigh 52kg I’m fed up of people telling me I look too thin I eat constantly even have reverted back to eating things which are not good for you Been told to eat x6 times a day Never ever thought is struggle to put weight on

  9. I'm 2 weeks post op and have been officially taken off my blood pressure medication......Yay!! Went to see Dr and blood pressure has been great. I haven't taken my meds since the day before my surgery. Was told to monitor it at home till my 2 weeks post op appointment and then a decision will be made. NO MORE BP MEDS ??

  10. Started by nomorefattypatty,

I had the sleeve in June 2017, and these last few months the acid in my stomach is backing up into my windpipe and literally burns my esophagus until I can't breathe, I instinctively grabbed my inhaler and recovered but it keeps happening so I have watch anything I eat. They don't warn anyone that this can happen, at least not me. I'm still having to lighten up my food intake a lot, has anyone else had to deal with this? They are in the process of giving me an egd with Bravo, which is a camera and they are probably going to revise to the gastric bypass anyone else experiencing this?

  11. Started by AshMarie794,

How did your tummy and body respond to antibiotics after surgery? I have had a horrible cold that I am afraid has now turned into something worse. So later today I will be going to my primary and I will more than likely need antibiotics. Any suggestions of what has worked and what hasn't?

  12. Started by missxchantel,

I am 4 months post of RNY gastric bypass. I have healed well, and I am getting all of my protein in. I am considering going on an all inclusive vacation with some girlfriends next month to Punta Cana in the Domincan Republic. I have had alcoholic beverages since surgery, but I sip. My concern is over the food and drinks. Ideally, I do plan on drinking but I am concerned everything will be sugary. I get dumping with high sugar. I'm sure I can be choosy with the foods. Has anyone else done all inclusive post RNY, and if so what do I need to know? What issues did you encounter? What did you drink? Thanks!

  13. Started by Swanton_Bomb,

I thought I was prepared. I tried a bunch of shakes pre-surgery and found that Premier RTD was the most palatable, and almost good when mixed in coffee. All of the other shakes were gag inducing after one sip, and that was pre-op. Well, I moved from clears to full liquid yesterday and I nearly puked trying to choke down 2oz. of Premier...and I bought so many of them! I know it isn't a great option but this morning I used some Carnation Instant Breakfast (the sugar free kind) in the higher protein Fairlife milk and I was able to get down half (4oz.) because it was a lot less sweet. 4oz. of this combo has 9 grams of protein, which isn't a whole lot but I figured it was bett…

  14. Started by MADE IT 2 MY GOAL..OH YEAH,

Since I had my 4th fill I have had a big problem with my saliva being very thick. It's not all the time, just after I eat. Also, when I throw up, it looks like the throw up itself is inside of a bubble. Sorry bout that but I wanted to check to see if anyone else has had or is having this happen with them? If so, what is causing this?

  15. I have had a doozy of a time since my initial sleeve surgery in 2016. After some complications, I had a revision to bypass last year, then another hospital stay this year for a bowel blockage. Right now I am still experiencing intestinal issues and I am scheduled for a colonoscopy in December. If I just drink protein shakes my tummy is fine. No constipation, no bloating I feel great. As soon I eat anything remotely resembling a real meal my tummy complains. Anyone else have this issue. Thanks

  16. Started by Kaseyn2boys,

I had Gastric Bypass on August 8th and since the day I came home (August 10th) I have not lost 1 lbs. I get my water and protein in. I have walked every day aside from 1. I have tried to read everything to figure out why, but I can't even find anyone else this has happened to. Did it really not work? Is that even possible? I have been doing everything I can on my end so why is this happening? I seriously don't think I can face anyone if after all this I still can't succeed.

So, I have a random question for any of you ladies out there that have suffered with PCOS or facial hair prior to surgery. I've tried EVERYTHING for this stupid facial hair growth. I'm now just back to plucking every other day. Doctors aren't sure if it's ACTUALLY PCOS (I have an upcoming appointment with a specialist.) or if it's just a hormonal imbalance due to the extreme obesity. Either way, even after losing my first 125lbs naturally, I've not seen much change...Although I'm still incredibly overweight, my cycle is finally getting some sort of regularity and ultrasounds have never actually showed any cysts on the ovaries. I have the sleeve done next month, yay! …

I'm not looking for a lecture, but I'm wondering about sugar free candy. Not necessarily chocolate, even like fruit chews or something. It's just something I started wanting the last couple days. I'm 5 weeks out from RNY. I'm not talking a lot of it, just a couple pieces of something. Any thoughts?

I just finished my surgery this morning which was at 7am, it's now 8pm. It hurts when I breathe, when I drink, when I swallow. Please tell me this goes away soon!

I got sleeved on Thursday morning. Broth and water since Tuesday, which is getting old and even those gross protein shakes seem appealing at this point! I miss my husband, visits to the hospital aren’t enough! I miss my dog too. I want to go home and not be hooked up to an IV and those annoying leg cuffs and have some uninterrupted sleep. I know, I know, I’m whining, and this was important to do, I’m just over the hospital experience.

So I just got home from Old Navy where I just bought three fitted dresses in size XL (OMG YAY). As I've been starting to hit the low end of my usual places - Lane Bryant, Torrid, etc. - I'm realizing I have NO IDEA where people buy clothes. I mean seriously, besides Target and Old Navy, where do people get clothes from?!?!? I have shopped at plus size stores since I was in 8th/9th grade (i.e. for just about 20 years/my whole adult life) so I really am at a loss as to where to go to find clothes once I'm no longer in the plus section... Did anyone else have this existential crisis when they hit this stage? Where do you even go to get clothes now?!?!?!? HAAAALLLPPPP!

I don't know if I titled this right. I had a hysterectomy last year in August. Then I had my VSG in April of this year. I have heard women who have wls get pregnant after losing weight, or their menstruals get regular, etc. My Dr left my ovaries because they are producing hormones perfectly. Well, I had my wls 6 months ago and I've lost a little over 45 pounds on my last visit which was at the end of September. I have an overactive bladder from being obese and the multi surgeries in my abdomen area. A few days ago, I noticed some blood on my panty liner and kinda got freaked out. I do have a dr appointment for my yearly on the 1st of November and I am going to talk to my …

  26. Hi all - I am getting so much out of reading these forums. Thank you to everyone who contributes. I am speeding my way through my 6 months of weigh-ins, and have had surgery scheduled for February 5th 2019. I'm fine with the timeframe - I have 3 more months to get my house in order. Llike, my literal house - am trying to declutter and deep clean to make things easier post-surgery. I liken it to being 6 months pregnant, and going into nesting mode, LOL. Anyway - I have an unhelpful husband, and two unhelpful daughters (aged 11 and 10). The youngest will sometimes do a surprise clean up for me - but it's very surface and doesn't involve things like washing dishes …

Hey! Just had surgery on the 1st and got home this morning at 11. Everything went perfectly. I am struggling a bit with one thing I don't really get yet. I don't feel hungry, maybe a slight twinge. But I do not feel full at all. I am on 2 2oz portions of full liquids 5 times a day. Just now, for example, I opted for 4 oz of cream of tomato soup. I think I am sipping too fast? It is so hard to tell because I don't feel full... but by the time I guess my body has had enough I get kind of burpy and heavy feeling. Does that mean I am going too quickly or is that just the new cue on when to stop? I'm not taking big gulps, I don't think... but it only takes me about 5 minutes…

I was at workign and noticed I couldn't keep anything down... (water... solids) etc. I started to experience pains where my port is... So I drove myself to the hospital to see if I can have some liquid removed... My doctor.. (Dr. Soong... he is the best!) said he wanted to get an xray to see if the band is alright... well it wasnt.. My band had not only slipped but also moved.. By that time I was in soooooo much pain.. I can't even discribe the pain I was in... I had to have sur…

  30. I was Sleeved on 10/29. Been trying each day to get in all my protein and liquids but I have fallen a bit short each day. A;so struggling to get my vitamins in. I am still not feeling hungry but yesterday I just started growing really tired of the same texture of "food". I am a fast food girl, have been since I could get my own money and get to the drive thru. I miss the crunch, the spice, the different textures, the ability to choose something different everyday/every meal. The food commercials are really getting to me and I'm starting to think, "I can't wait until I can have that". I'm afraid that this means failure is right around the corner. So, before I had the surgery I was told my weight loss would be slower than others do to multiple medical issues causing hormonal issues including a benign brain tumor. My question is I'm only 3 weeks post OP and it seems to have come to a halt. In fact I gained three lbs. I have been following the plan as prescribed. I just introduced salmon, shrimp and eggs. Has anyone else felt with this issue so early on ? Any advice?

Hey all. I am 4 days post op robotic RNY... all day I've been getting super hot and then shivering. No fever though. Getting water down a lot better than yesterday. But I keep like.. inducing panic attacks. My heart has been pounding since yesterday and i keep half-crying. I feel like a crazy person! I keep questioning if I did the right thing, and then thinking about foods like Golden Grahams and mac n cheese and wondering why I couldn't just be happy the way I was and how unjust it is that I have friends who eat total garbage and never gained a pound and that I had to have this surgery just to be healthy, etc etc. I didn't really have any health issues and did this most…

Day 6 post op. I am on full liquids until Thursday or Friday. I am starting to feel so so hungry though. My brain has begun plotting "tricks" on how I could scoop put Taco Bell burritos and eat that and just have "just one bite of mac n cheese". I just have a deep hunger that isnt remotely being satisfied by liquids. I NEED to chew something! lol. The longer I go without food-food, the harder it's becoming not to just gorge and dump. And I already had dumping once from trying cream soup (which they said I could have but didnt tolerate). I am so scared I'll get to real foods and have more dumping. But I am going a bit nuts on liquids, dreaming about 7 layer dip on tablespo…

Finally ended a month long stall, down 71 pounds since May 16th so I started remembering back when: Here's to the jerk that sat behind me in English class in High School that called me STUFF, here's to the Ex who was abusive and called me FAT, here's to the guy at the amusement park that rolled his eyes because I couldn't fasten the seat harness around myself, and here's to the hiring Manager that asked me if I thought I could dress professionally, I'm that girl, same face, same feelings just a lot less of me, a happier me, happier life and that's what is important to me..you all missed out

Hi everyone ! So I must admit I've been feeling more encouraged with everyone'ssupportive comments and recommendations since I was last on. That 3 week stall was very discouraging, and I'm still accepting it but definitely working through it much better now. So now, as much as I've tried sticking to the diet plan post op, I slipped last night. My mom made some chicken in salsa, onions and veggies (in my culture it's similar to a pollo encebollado). I took a bite from it, and following that took an even smaller bite of this dulce de leche from a party cake my sister brought home. I've been doing so well but I definitely gave into temptation. I’m will be 2 months post op next week on the 18th so I’m only down 25 pounds but the scale doesn’t seem to be moving. It’s like I gain a pound lose a pound is any one else experiencing that? Also some time I feel like I’m not eating enough and I read that can also slow the process down...I usually measure my food now but I’m hungry 2 to 3 hours later and to skip a meal is not as easy as it was before the hungry pains are different it’s like I have to eat when I’m hungry because it’s uncomfortable ? any support would be appreciated

I'm new to these forums, so bear with me. My story is long and ... complicated (pun intended). I had an open Roux-en-Y in April of 2002 at St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel, Indiana. I lost over 200 pounds in a three year period and have maintained that loss for more than a decade. I am a Type 2 diabetic. I am on insulin. The surgery never really helped, and my own inconsistency and occasional non-compliance (read: stubbornness) are self-made traps. I am in control at present with an a1c of 9.2 (and falling). I walk quite a bit at work and do functional lifting when needed, but am otherwise inactive other than routine daily activities. I started smoking abo…

I have 3 capsules that I have to take. I have been told to empty the contents into something like yogurt. I have tried yogurt, applesauce, and today V8. I am really struggling to get these down. Gagging with each swallow. I'm 5 days post op and just want to swallow these meds. The largest is the Bariatric Advantage vitamins with iron. When did you all start swallowing pills that are larger than MnMs? Any advise on how to get the powder down?
