POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Alina6396,

Has anyone experience terrible heartburn only at night , i'm 8 days post op the first 3 days i didn't have heartburn, after that every night i wake up after 2 am with pain in my stomach it's like slow motion cramps, i take a couple of tums and i'm OK for couple of hours then they wake me up again, i didn't have any heartburn problems prior the surgery. I'm wonder is it is common after surgery and how long they will last? hopefully not forever

Hi I’m new here and recently had surgery on 1/18/19, my doctor said that I can take liquid Tylenol for pain (since I don’t like how hydrocordone make me feel) but I noticed it has high fructose corn syrup in it. So has anyone taken this & was okay?

  3. Started by lorraine#11,

So I am on my 4th week had surgery dec 29...I can't eat real food...only shakes, jello, pudding and some soups... I tried a little grilled chicken and I feel like vomiting. Is this normal?

  4. Started by Gottajustdoit,

My doctor just prescribed Acitigall (generic Ursodiol) post surgery as my gall bladder looks great and is staying put. He said I would have to take it for 6 months after the surgery to prevent gall stones from forming. Has anyone had experience taking this medication? If so, how long did you take it and what side effects, if any, did you have? THanks!

  5. The surgery went well. It took only a half hour, I am told. No complications. Since December, I have lost 13.4 lbs and nearly 6 lbs this week. The nursing staff at my hospital was incredible, other than having to wait a long time at certain times of day. I was in for two nights because I had to learn how to give myself blood thinner injections due to increased risk of blood clots. Thank God, only for two weeks. I will say though, that the side effects of the opioids they had me on were decidedly unpleasant. I am on no pain meds other than Tylenol at the present and have very little pain from the surgery. It is mostly my grumpy knees complaining all the time. Also get…

Im 3 weeks post op and I swear my smelling has turned into a superpower. I’m the only one recognizing these strong scents in my house and things I liked before make me sick now. The smell of the soaps in my bathroom absolutely nauseate me! Has anyone else experienced this? Will it go away??

  7. Started by MassMom,

Does anyone else feel like they are drinking too fast? I have not had too many problems getting anything down- water, protein shake, broth- but I feel like I'm drinking it like I did before. It will take me about 20 min to finish a 8 ounce protein drink. And that is with me trying to go slow. I use the small one ounce cups- but I just drink and repeat. I'm not sure how bad.this is, but I keep reading that you shouldn't do this. What have others done?

I have been struggling the last few months just not following the proper plan I’ve been on a stall since November and I know it’s because of my eating habits I’m just trying to figure out how to get back on track I’ll be a year out in March and do not want to gain maybe I need a little motivation idk HELPPPPP PLEASE ??

  9. Started by Swanton_Bomb,

I stupidly ate my lunch too fast today because I was busy at work. The last bite gave me an unbelievable pain in upper abdomen. Really intense. I ran to the bathroom and tried to throw it up, but I couldn’t. I felt a little better though, because the gagging must have moved some stuff around. About 2 hours later I took my vitamin pills and started my shake, and while I don’t feel pain, I still feel pressure and just a weird sensation, and it is uncomfortable to drink. Can stuff get stuck going down? I mean, it can’t still be stuck because I took a pill and drank but maybe I kind of bruised something? Never again will I rush to get those damned grams of protein in. I’m 2 .…

  10. Hello, so I hadn’t my surgery on the 25th of October 2018 and I had a gastric leak about a week post op. I have since been discharged two weeks ago and starting on soft foods; however whilst I’m eating I’ve noticed some discomfort, not really pain, and an aching feeling in my abdomen.. is this normal at all? I eat only a teaspoon or less at a time and I eat very slowly.. and I can only eat about 5-6 teaspoons of food and then I feel like I’m full.. I’ve also noticed that I burp and hiccup a lot when I eat as well... I don’t see my surgeon for another 3 weeks.. so just wondering if anyone has experienced this or have any ideas on what’s going on? Thank you

I know stalls are common, but I'm just over a week into my first and quietly weeping in a corner. I actually gained weight the last two days, which is super sucky and not at all justified based on what I've been eating!! Which brings me to my question. Do you change your eating to break the stall, or stay the course and toss the scale in the garbage? Is a stall indicative of a problem, or is it just a normal bump in the road? I'm sure it CAN BE indicative of a problem, but is it always? After gaining yesterday and today, I found myself being hypercritical of everything I put in my mouth. Yesterday I was counting calories like it was my job, leaving me horrified …

  12. Hi, folks. I have not been on this board for a long time. Today, I had a visit to my bariatric surgeon's physician assistant (PA). I am 16 months out from roux en y surgery and have lost a total of 101 pounds. I went there today because I have been experiencing severe abdominal pain, bloating and flatulence at night, every night x 2-3 weeks. I should add that I am an RN and am one semester away from completing my Family Nurse Practitioner Master's degree. The PA gave me some advice, ordered some meds and labs and I checked out--it was about 4:10pm. She had told me to do the labs today, due to the severity of the symptoms I was having. Their office was closing. I went…

Most of my mine is in the curve of my back on the right hand side and I am sure that is from laying on my back in a strange bed for 5 days. My incisions haven’t been bothering me at all, they are swollen and colourful but they don’t hurt! Other than that it’s just a bit of pain in the top left bicep , not my shoulder

I’m 3 days out, 1/17/19, and I’m feeling much better today. I had the worst gas pain in my hips and shoulder. Today, I was able to get out of bed without my fiancé’s help. I’m able to advance to stage 2 (purées) today but really nervous... I’m so tired of protein shakes and I’m so tired of the taste of “water”... Gas-X has been my best friend! Anyone have tips for starting to work out? So nervous! I want to get the scale moving but not hurt myself!!

  16. Hey everyone I am writing this tonight because I am 3 weeks post-op via gastric bypass. Currently I am in a lot of discomfort because my dietary paperwork said three weeks post-op that I am allowed to have turkey chili. So I proceeded to have a couple of spoons and then I realized it just seemed to not be going down. I felt so uncomfortable and I currently am still uncomfortable. I threw up a couple of times so that feeling can go away and I can feel some relief. It helped a little bit but I still have a weird sensation in my throat. Have any of you experienced this sort of feeling post-operation. It is just this feeling of not being able to swallow and burning it just fe…

I have seen a number of comments here about gas pains after surgery, and I'm wondering exactly what that means. Is this the gas that was pumped into the abdomen during surgery? Is it released via good old-fashioned flatulence or some other way? (I'm having bypass on February 25.)

  18. Started by Neri,

I've been having a lot of trouble getting in all my water for the day because in the evening water starts making me feel extremely nauseous. I'm able to sip at my water up until that point. I'm also still able to drink protein shakes and have soup just fine too. Has anyone else experienced this?

  19. Hey everyone, Tonight I have been dealing with a new set of issues related to my recent sleeve surgery.. since about seven hours ago, I have been getting a considerable amount of gas like pains in the center of my chest that spread all the way to my left arm and shoulder and sometimes even my right. They are quite painful, and seem to come in waves if that makes any sense. I am also getting a great deal of pain between my shoulder blades and again around my left shoulder especially. Sometimes the pain even reaches up the side of my neck , and my left arm can sometimes feel heavy or weak. These pains are all similar to the gas pains that are felt post-surgery, however thes…

So I know it is recommended that you stabilize your weight after reaching goal/max loss before getting skin removed, but is it possible to do breast implants sooner? I know I am thinking pretty far ahead here because I am only about halfway to my goal weight but my breasts are so small now and they look weird and I am extremely self conscious about it. Can you get implants as soon as you reach goal?

Hey all, so the Marie Kondo phenomenon combined with a lot of people having involuntary time off with the shutdown has led the local charity shops to be so overrun with donations that many aren't accepting more donations right now. I have a bunch of clothes I'd like to get out of my house, but my surgical group doesn't have a clothing exchange. I figure this is a long shot, but anyone know of a good bariatric clothing exchange in DC or close-in suburbs? And, apropos of nothing, I knew I'd need to get rid of clothing, but I also have a lot of kitchenware that I won't use anymore to donate - rice cooker, an enormous pan that I'll never be able to use again, canisters…

I'm about 2.5 months post-sleeve. I'm still at the point where the pouch is doing most of the work, but I know eventually that will change. I'd like to get myself as prepared as possible for good habits in the long term. I've heard that the book Beck Diet Solution is good for thinking about behavior modification. Has anyone read it post-WLS? Opinions? Does it work post surgery? Appreciate any thoughts anyone has! Thanks

Hi everyone, so I have my surgery date 2/21/2019. I know that post-op we should wait 2 weeks to return to work. But was wondering if there was anyone out there that went back earlier and how they did. I have a very sedentary job and thinking I might be okay after like a week and a half. Any input is appreciated.

I’m one week post op... Did anyone get pain in their center back every time they swallowed anything like water juice broth? I also get pain that overcomes my body for 7 seconds in my back every once in a while maybe 30 times a day? Anyone experience?

  32. Is this normal? Everytime I swallow anything at all, I feel considerable pain and pressure straight down through the sternum and into the stomach. It doesn't matter how small the sips are as well. Also I'm having a lot of upper back and shoulder pain as well, which I assume are normal also? x.x I feel absolutely miserable today.

  33. I copied this post from an old post I found on the site from 2013. What do you think? I kind of a long read, but I has a lot of good information I thought. I was most interested about the parts that talk about the importance of making the most in the first 6 months and not to take them for granted. I am 4 1/2 month out, so It has given me a renewed sense of urgency to make the most of my "honeymoon" period. Hey guys and girls, I posted not that long ago regarding calories required at maintenance, I’m near 8 months PO and have reached my goal weight about 2 months ago (176 pounds), over the past 2 months I have continued to keep losing and now sitting around 152 pounds. I saw my dietician two days ago and she had requested that I up my caloric intake as it was sitting at 700-900 calories a day before. She done up a draft plan with items she wanted me to consume, some of the changes she made was changing my no fat milk to full fat milk. The last two days I’ve eased into it and have been consuming around 1300 calories a day which include 105 grams of protein, 90 grams…

I’ve had nausea the last 10 days. DS surgery was in Mexico on 12/17/18. I have thrown up once, everything else has stayed down but the feeling of being nauseous sticks around pretty much all day. I went for IV fluids with some Zofran and vitamins last Friday at an IV therapy facility. I definitely felt better after the fluids but the nausea was still there in the background. I’ve been able to drink more liquids since I had the IV fluids. I see my PCP tomorrow and I am hoping she can give me something for the nausea. My Mexican hospital told me to take Dramamine, which I have been doing while waiting to see PCP. I am trying to go back to work this week and do not w…

I started at 227 lbs, because I was overweight, I had several health issues that were my real motivation for the surgery. I don't regret it for a second. Everything is getting better. I had surgery Nov. 19th and have lost 37 lbs. Most of my issues have already resolved or are resolving. I am apparently losing a bit over a half a pound a day. How long will this continue if I stay faithful to the program?

I have an unbearable pain on the right side of my belly under my ribs and goes all the way to the back/waist on that same side. from the beginning after the surgery I had this pain but it was just sometimes, considering it Was near the stitches I thought it hurt there because that is close where the doctor removed the stomach and manouver everything from that side. Weeks past by and the pain dissapeared. And yesterday 19 days after my surgery here I come again with the same pain but now is super strong I would say 8 from 1-10 or sometimes 9/10. This is a question for all planners out there: How do you plan for an event or two? I am currently enrolled in Ballroom Dance Classes and i took off the 6 weeks due to surgery. There are two competitions that i actually signed up for.. a local one here in Florida that is just with the 3 local studios ( Feb 23rd) and one in September that is much larger, nationwide held in Miami. My dilemma: how in the world do i plan and determine what my weight may be in order to get the dresses i need. 46. Started by notmyname,

My insurance (like many ) covers 90 days of post-op follow-ups after surgery. The only reason I know this is that I've had surgery before and my ortho doc's office told me. So, my sleeve surgeon's office has twice tried to charge me for visits because they're miscoding them. If I didn't know better, they'd just be making me pay extra. I also had to get on them about charging me more for my surgery than my insurance allows. So, it's important to know your coverage and keep your doc's office honest!

  47. Hi all, I’m almost a month post-op VSG and am doing quite well getting to learn my new stomach. I was wondering how much you’re sleeping post-surgery? A friend slept 8 hours a night with a four hour nap the first 6 weeks, and I’m sleeping 10-11 hours per night with no naps. I’m heading back to work next week and am wondering when others have been able to go back to a more normal 8-hour sleep schedule.

I keep getting this pain in my diaphragm intermittently. It happens when I drink too fast and will go away in a couple of seconds. However, tonight I am laying down and it’s just happening randomly and I haven’t been drinking anything for the last hour or two. It’s happening every couple of minutes or so. Is this normal? Sorry I’m a worry wart and want to make sure it’s nothing crazy or serious post op complication.

Good morning beautiful people! I’m scheduled for surgery TOMORROW 8/28 with an arrival of 830. Im excited, nervous and scared. I know this may be a little crazy but can you all who have had the surgery tell what I should expect? From check in, to the preop area, to going into a operating room and then waking up afterwards. I’m scared I’m going to wake up and have an anxiety attack ??‍♀️??‍♀️. I know this is weird but I like to be prepared and it’s my first surgery so I’m a MESS!
