Glass of wine week 5 post op

Recommended Posts

So I’m back after all my tales of woe today I have to bring my kids to a Halloween party. Interestingly I have ZERO interest in candy or any other treats so yay for that! I know alcohol is discouraged post op is it because people have a higher likelihood of becoming alcoholics? Would one glass of wine be disastrous? I don’t drink often but the stress of everything is making a glass of wine very appealing...

IMHO

Focus on the basics for a while: Vitamins, Water, Protein, fruits & vegetables.

If those things are currently troubling you, you're not ready for empty nutrition liquid calories. They will halt progress.

But as an adult, the choice is always yours.

Safe Journey!

I have a “mock” wine sometimes during the week when I want a glass of wine but really don’t want alcohol. It satisfies me for some reason. I use cherry juice, not from concentrate, and Water. In a red wine glass. Maybe it will work for you too. Cheers!

Well since you are preop I would think it would be up to you unless you are on your preop diet to shrink your liver in which case it is not allowed. In my understanding, alcohol affects post op BS patients differently and it is important to be really careful until you know how it affects you. I have heard of some people developing alcoholism after BS. I personally have drank alcohol in moderation since age 18 and continue to do so and I have not encountered any problems with it.

Good girl. Decaf coffee and hot tea work well too. Also, put Water with lemon or lime wedges in a footed wine glass and add ice out the ying yang! So it feels like you're being festive!!

And with your tummy issues, I'm gonna say it...it would NOT be your finest choice to make...

I know all I need is to get plastered at the neighborhood Halloween party off half a glass of wine...

My work colleague told me she was a heavy tailgater prior to WLS and she's now 1 year post and has been known to blackout after 1 drink.

I think your decision to abstain is wise. If you're going to experiment with alcohol better to do it in the privacy of your own home. (Where no one has blackmail pictures 😂🤣)

I can say I've been very hesitant to try a glass for that very reason. LOL

Well more than that, not that I'm a saint about anything, but IMHO we all need to try to make the next best choice from here on out. Doesn't mean we will win, cuz I can guarantee we won't win 100% of the time. But each time we DO win the test, we get stronger and are one step closer to redefining a lifetime of bad habits that got us a lifetime invitation to the Obesity Ball. You know?

And you know, there are a host of reasons why alcohol isn't a great choice, but 5 weeks out it's even worse:

1. Wine = highly acidic and could increase acid and possibly cause a small ulcer at the operation suture line. Big time Billy-badass probs then.

2. Empty calories that disrupts fat burning mode in some way I can't fully explain to you.

3. Your tummy is still pretty raw in there. God! Imagine having to confess why you're hemorraging! Cuz alcohol thinned your blood too much now your bleeding at your incision sight. :(

4. Then there's the whole transfer addiction thing...and I'm not qualified to talk about that...

But hell...I'm just a shmoe on the internet and am not qualified to talk about any of this stuff! Lol!

Not that I’m drinking yet (only 3 weeks since surgery) but if/when I do, I’m having vodka. It has less calories than wine and zero sugar and carbs! But then again - I don’t like wine! I was a dirty martini girl before surgery!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
