POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by nevermore71,

Ok I'm 47 years old and perimenopausal. I reached my goal weight. Yay! But the last 50 lbs. off I didn't lose a single inch of my waist. I would still like to lose about 10 or 15 more pounds, mostly from my waistline. But you can't target weight loss. I'm thinking the odd way I'm losing weight is due to my being perimenopausal. And think that maybe a low dose birth control might help. Or hormone replacement therapy. I would also like help with regulating my cycle as it's very short right now. Anybody have any insight or knowlge about this? Perimenopausal women on BC that are losing from their waistline? BC suggestions? Any help would be very appreciated. Th…

  2. I was sleeved on April 29 and my first follow up is not until May 9. This feels excessively long to be on clear liquid compared to others here that I am seeing are already on soft/purée. I am not having any issues with getting things down and the gas gets better less every day. I really would like to go to full liquid sooner for variety sake. Does anyone else find 10 days on clear liquid a bit excessive?

I developed a collapsed lung after surgery. I had to have a chest tube jabbed in. After 2 day I am proud to say, "I made it to the losers bench!" I am on full liquids til I gor bavk and see my Dr on the 8th them we move to full liquids. I have little pain at all. Just some mild discomfort from swelling. Still taking some chewable gas pills.

Hello all, I am 3 days to sleeve gastrectomy. I thought that I would not feel hungry as much anymore. However, I woke up hungry from the surgery. And I've been feeling hunger ever since! I addressed it to my Dr., He reassured me that everything went well. And to stick to my eating schedule and meds, and that the feeling will reduce in the days to come. Is that true? Did it happen to anyone else? What is the reason and how did you tackle it?

Hello. I had my RNYGP this past Monday, March 4th and it has been progressively difficult to tolerate liquid and protein shakes. I am supposed to take meds every couple of hours (liquid Oxycodone, crushed Tylenol, liquid Colace, vitamins) and I find myself getting so full from the meds that I can’t finish the medication regimen, let alone additional intake. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal? Thanks.

  7. Started by MikeRNY,

I had my Roux-en-Y surgery on 4/29. I attended 6 weeks of classes prior to surgery and was warned of all the possible issues I could face during the recovery period. I am having no trouble swallowing. I took a Tylenol the other night and instead of sipping water, I took a big gulp and downed a half of a glass before I remembered that I was supposed to be sipping. There is no pain beyond the pain from where they cut through my ab muscles to get inside to perform the surgery. I know I shouldn't complain, but honestly I'm waiting for the "first shoe" to drop, much less the "other shoe." I'm not feeling weak, tired or run down. The only thing I have really noticed …

I has lapband surgery in 2012 I had lost around 44 lbs but never hit my target weight.... I have gained some if it back and am just not happy with my size or health right now... I am going to start a lapband reset this week, this reset has you drinking 5-7 protein shakes per day nothing else for the first 48hrs... My concern is when i drink a protein shake first think in the morning about an hour later I have to get to a restroom fast.... and then I end up with really loose stool for the rest of the day ... is this normal and does this happen to other people? ???? Makes it really hard to maintain your daily schedule when you have to keep running to the restroom…

I'm 31 and nearly 2 years post-op, down 112. About a month ago I started experiencing hot flashes. I haven't had a period in 2 months. Did anyone else's rapid weightloss trigger early menopause? Are these symptoms of something else? I'm trying not to get in my head. Any help would be great.

  11. Hi Everyone, I am looking for reassurance! I am 59 years old and had my gastric sleeve 2 years ago about three months after the surgery my body felt like it was going to start a period! Although I had been postmenopausal for several years. Low and behold I did have spotting right after that! Several times in the past couple of years I have done the same thing snd spotted. I had a vaginal ultrasound last week and there was some slight thickening in my endometrial lining tomorrow I am slated for a biopsy I am trying so hard not to worry as I think this is all hormonal related due to my surgery. I have lost 90 lbs, reached my goal and am keeping it off. No regain thus…

I had my VSG surgery on May 2. I was in the hospital overnight and released the next day by 2 PM. Had a great experience, didn’t have any nausea didn’t throw up was able to keep down more ounces of liquids and I thought I could. The gas pain does come on in your sternum area but it’s not terrible you just need to make yourself belch and almost immediately it goes away. For the times it doesn’t go away just remind yourself need to be walking. The time I was in the hospital I got up and walked about every hour hour and a half. Been home now since yesterday afternoon and I don’t feel terrible. The only thing that hurts is if you do get it a short gas pain. I absolutely r…

Hello All ! I am 3 1/2 weeks post op and for the most part I’m doing fine. However since being on solids from Day 15 , I find it very hard to eat 3 4oz meals per day , I vomit after drinking Protein Shakes and I have acid reflux after eating. Anybody else have this ? Does it get better ? Sure I look better on the outside but on the inside I feel terrible. Please tell me it gets better ! P.S. I’ve lost 25 lbs in three weeks ! I’ve lost 50 in total since 1 month pre-op ! Feel free to follow me on IG and i’ll do the same for support ☺️

I had gastric sleeve surgery about 2 years ago. Since then, I've had some spine disc damage and herniation. Does anyone have any information on why someone would have such bad pain this late into the gastric sleeve? Could the disc herniation be the reason for the pain? What about coffee or caffeine (....) intake? I've tried many remedies and some, if not all do not work.

I’m getting close to my surgery date and I’m starting to prepare for post op and research the pureed stage. My doctor wants me on liquids for 9 days, then pureed for 3 weeks, then soft foods etc. Did any of you busy people out there have baby food during that time? I’m thinking what’s the point of cooking just to blend it together into mash when there are pre made stuff out there? if I like the taste, is it okay to eat?

Hiya all, I'm so happy to be on the other side, finally sleeved 4.29. Im curious if my experience so far is within normal. My surgeon used staples to ensure patients would come to week follow up. I'm pretty sore, but just on the incision to the right on my abd. I'm wearing a binder but when I stand up it feels like my guts will come out. I still need full help standing up. I cant fully stand upright bc of pain. Every sip of room temp water makes my stomach clench and spasm. I've had a low grade temp today 99.5 with a massive headache. Food smells are toooo much. Tried to sip Gatorade zero and it was to sweet. Sipped a little warm bone broth, that seems to be ok. I also ha…

I’m only 2 weeks post op the Orbera. Do you think I’m setting myself up for failure? Maybe I should postpone my quit date do I do not have cravings...any thoughts, comments, or questions are appreciated! FYI...I use snuff.

I had the sleeve last August and my only real problem is continued pain management for my severe arthritis. Between the sleeve no longer allowing me to take NSAIDs and my warfarin also limiting things, I am aching all over. The steroid injections no longer help in my knees, my primary recommended Tylenol arthritis but it did nothing and a UK doctor prescribed Co-Codamol which is basically Tylenol with codeine. None of it helps. I do the stretching and exercises daily, use muscle runs, supplements that supposedly help joints and.frankly none work as well.as my old Naproxen (Aleve) used to, other than hydrocodone, which I discovered when prescribed post-OP and which isn't …

I am scheduled for bypass on 3/8. I am wondering after 6 weeks are you able to drink water faster than right after surgery? I am not able to stop and drink every 15 minuets to be sure I get my water in. I am hoping that by 6 weeks postop I can drink more at one time so I will not have to drink as often. I know everyone is different. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I see a lot of people say here that their nr1 advice for people getting WLS is to take advantage of the “honeymoon period”, whether that be 3, 6 or 12 months. I was wondering if anyone had tips on how to do that? Does “taking advantage”, basically mean be very careful about what you eat? Tracking and such?

Sooo I'm 3 days post op and still struggling with determining when I'm full or not. Every time I swallow a sip of anything, I feel tightness just below my sternum. In between trying to drink my protein supplements my stomach growls as if I am hungry (the feeling of hunger pre op). I know I have to learn to recognize the new full feeling, but it seems like I can't settle into a routine of how much to eat (or drink, I'm still full liquid), when to stop, or if I'm feeling hungry. There have been a few times where I took a sip to take meds and I immediately begin heaving but never actually throw up. That in itself is scary too because I'm worried about my incisions splitting …

I started to feel hungry a few days ago but I'm still on full liquids. From reading the other posts i feel very blessed. Did anyone else have it kind of easy?

Hi! I’m almost 7 weeks post op and I’m dealing with some serious abdominal cramping and I’m wondering if this is normal or if I should begin to worry?? I ate nothing out of the ordinary leading up to this. Around 7 am out of NOWHERE I got what felt like awful awful bowel cramps. I ran to the bathroom, had some diarrhea and the cramps are still severe almost 2 hours later. I just got off of my 12 hour night shift at the hospital so I figured I would just sleep it off after getting home but I can’t even sleep because it feels so so bad ): Should I be freaking out? Cause I’m kinda freaking out ):

  37. Had my surgery on Thursday and came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. The pain is moderate but I was given pain pills for that. However, yesterday and all last night was terrible. Barely could sip enough water without feeling stuffed and sick. Then I had to try to take my pills with water and that felt terrible. But the sugar free popsical put me over the edge! Took about 3-4 licks and then I started to dry-heave. Then threw up again after trying to take my pain pill later that night. Now I’m currently sitting here this morning just trying to chew my vitamins. I have no idea how I’m going to get my water in!!!! Help!

Idk if it is just me everyone I know seems to be doing fine post-surgery, but I've been struggling bad. I don't even care about losing weight at this point I just want to feel better. Even drinking water is hard, its like I am regressing rather than progressing. anyone else experience this?

It also sucks because I still have to be a mom and a wife. But I just feel like crap! I keep telling myself...this didn’t happen over night and you asked for it but Lord knows....I had no idea it would be this bad! I burped and flatuated last night and it felt amazing...almost like an orgasm!! TMI! That’s just how amazing it felt! I didn’t tell much people I was having the procedure...but now I’m not...I don’t want it anymore... any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I would like to lose 52lbs and reach my goal weight by the end of November 2019. That gives me 7 months. Is that something that is achievable? My surgeon's office keeps telling me that my surgery is going to "stop helping me" soon and that my "honeymoon period" is over and it's really discouraging me. I am still losing weight at about 7-10lbs per month, so if I keep that rate up, I should get there. Will things slow down or is 7-10lbs in the "final 6 months" before the 12 month mark still attainable? My 6 months is May 1. What was YOUR personal experience in the 6-12 month period? I have this personal deadline because I want my brachioplasty in December to mini…

Today marks 3 weeks post bypass for me, and although I'm not in a stall per se, I am losing very very slowly. I'm 57 and post menopausal so that may have something to do with it. I'm eating approx 55-90 gm protein a day and still in purees. I need assurance that if I keep working my plan I will eventually lose weight. Any successful slow losers out there?

But not regrets! I'm starting to have some serious back pain. I don't know if it's from carrying myself differently because of the pain or being in bed more. Or maybe from not being able to sleep on my tummy. Also nearly constant gas. Burping all the time. Any thoughts?

I'm in the pureed food portion of my post-op diet and I notice that I'm gaining some weight back. I admit that I have been messing up a lot with my eating choices. I'm struggling with balancing the things I'm supposed to be doing. I'm supposed to eat 5 small meals a day of 1/4 cup portions, drink a protein shake, drink water and take my vitamins. I'm not drinking the protein shake, I don't eat until later in the day, I'm not making healthy food choices when I do eat, I cant seem to slow my eating down to 15 minutes. Does anyone have any ideas to help me or words of wisdom/support?

  49. Started by Tiff187,

I'm just over 2 weeks out and I've gotta say, I'm miserable. I don't know if I've hit the depression stage or what but I keep asking why I did this to myself. I was working out every day and had lost 25lbs on my own before surgery and kept telling myself the sleeve was a preventative measure to keep myself from getting that fluffy again. Now I can't stop thinking that I ruined my life (as I knew it). Of course, prior to May I wasn't working out and wasn't watching my intake, which is why I got up to 240lbs. But in the last 3 months I took control and really thought the sleeve would be my new best friend like everyone on here seems to say. So did you ever have any regrets?…

  50. Hi i'm going into the 4 week soon I'm like a lot of people on here and hit a stall. But I'm wondering what the calorie limit some have for themselves? I.m following the plan and portion sizes, canned chicken 1 oz , tuna , salmon etc. Protein shake homemade with 1/8 cup blueberries. 1 oz cod and green beans with little cheese, of course the 1 oz scrambles egg and tablespoon of mozzarella cheese also a half of avocado. And a snack of sugar free pudding 1/2 cup. Everything i can have in my food binder. I also just stared my lose it app to keep track again. Anyways about 800 900 a day. Would love some others food choices and calories . Thanks
