I have decided to have the gastric sleeve, as this is the surgery recommended for Acro patients (see below). I am hoping to get my surgery on Sept 9, 2019. Bariatric Pal is a great place for me to connect with others in the process, as I live on the rural Island of Hawaii and support groups are limited. I have to fly to another island for the surgery and will be required to stay on that island for 10 days post-surgery.
I have been steadily gaining for about 16 years. In 2009 I was diagnosed with a rare disease called Acromegaly. The weight gain was attributed to the disease and the medication that I was on until January of this year, when I went into remission. If all goes according to (my) plan, I will stay in remission and return to a weight I can be happy with.
Along with the weight gain, the disease causes major joint pain usually from arthritis as a result of bone growth. The disease alters people appearances in several ways as well, including enlargement of hands and feet, changes in shape of nose, forehead protrusion. I have been fortunate that my appearance did not change drastically, but I am definitely not shaped how I would choose: Large hands, wide feet, barrel shaped torso. I am hoping that with significant weightloss I can reclaim the me that I once knew. I would also like to feel less pain on my joints from the extra pounds, so that I can jump back in the trenches with colleagues (Archaeology).
