Hello, so I am almost two weeks away from my surgery date (6/26/14). I have a pre-op scheduled class on Thursday and have started experimenting with protein shakes. Does anyone have any good suggestions on shakes? I have to do them 2 weeks before surgery with a regular dinner and I'm a little nervous. I'll take any suggestions and advice!

I had RNY for one reason and one reason only: to get healthy. At 53 my health was severely compromised. I had uncontrolled type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, PCOS, anxiety, panic, depression and recently battled Guillane-Barre Disease(also called GBS). I am still struggling with the Guillane-Barre but I am doing so well I hardly count it. I couldn't walk or talk when I was full blown with it so now I am much better. I was on 5 medicines for diabetes including insulin and my Endocrinologist suggested RNY. After much thought, prayer and research I decided it was the right thing for me. I applied to insurance and after 6 months of doctor visits and NU…

Hello everyone I wanted to share my experience dealing with Grand Health Partners in Grand Rapids Michigan. I had surgery on the 26th of this month, or 5 days ago with Dr. Nagle. I tried a few years back with another service offered in Lansing Mi and was not satisfied at all with thier approach. Dr. Nagle and Grand Health Partners have made this life changing event for me comfortable and as easy as it could possibly go. St Mary Hospital in Grand Rapids also had a part in that. What a beautiful place to recover from surgery. Staff was the best I have ever experienced in a hospital setting. I cant say enough good things about my experience. Happy to be on the losers…

WOW, I did it! I have reached my personal goal of 100 lbs gone by 1 year. I had my sleeve surgery on July 26, 2013. I still have 30 lbs to go, but this is the moment for me! I often get asked would I do the surgery again. OF COURSE, I would. If I had to do surgery every year I would do it. NO DIET WORKS. It has to be a lifestyle change (yes, we have heard that before, but did we every believe it?). I spent years thinking it was my fault I couldn't stay on a diet. It was my fault I couldn't keep the weight off. Well guess what? It isn't my fault. Without the surgery I can't even think where I would be right now, probably spending $100s of dollars on a diet plan that "wo…

I go at least once a week to Overeater's Anonymous preferably on Sunday afternoons. I feel it goes deeper than just eating habits and meal plans maintenance. Its a way of life a new life free from the mental obsession of food as being an activity. Emotional eating is what landed me in the position to get the surgery in the first place. The 12 step program shows a life free from the bondage of food being the center of daily life. When people share during the meeting they discuss real life problems surrounding compulsive eating and compulsive food behavior. yes I said it behavior part that includes that mentality of eating disorders because its more than just getting the su…

This story has a beginning, but the end is still nowhere in sight. I am the oldest of three kids. My mother is one of those breathtaking, exotic beauties that you just can't help but admire. My father was a handsome man—full of life. We were adorable children—happy and content. I looked like my Dad, but was starting to look like Mom every day. The happiness didn't last. When Dad left, depression took over and I had no one to talk to besides my siblings, who were too young to confide in. That's when my brother and sister and I discovered how comforting food was. Through the years my body grew out as well as up, and I noticed something. My brother and sister where growi…

In two days I will be on a plane heading to San Diego! And on Thursday I will have surgery in Tijuana. Im packing, cleaning, getting everything set for the kiddos (We have five little ones) and ordering stuff I'll need postop so it's here when we get back. Just had to take a moment to stop for a little bit of crazy and say- I am seriously having 85% of my STOMACH permanently removed in three days!!!?? Oh my goodness. It's so weird and scary and exciting at the same time. I'm soooo scared to fly and have surgery. I hope everything goes fine. I'm going to miss my babies so much. Ah, I'm a wreck. Can't wait until this is all over and we are home again...

well tomorrow I plan on making chicken stew with the pressure cooker and I put only healthy ingredients chicken cutlets cut up into cubes and chicken broth and veggies. basically I want the meat to come out tender and soft not dry and tough. I think its a healthy addition to any kitchen. I can buy the low quality meats like london broils, pot roast, chicken cutlets the big ones I buy all my meat on sale freeze it for when I need it. Its important I believe to have a good variety of healthy food choices. that includes all the various ways of preparing and cooking meat. I usually steam my veggies that i buy frozen. I stay away from high carb veggies like peas. I usually use…

On Friday, when I was at my daughter's house, I was able to slide off the sofa to the floor and play with my grandchildren. I was so happy, I nearly cried. Usually I would just sit on the sofa and hold them on my lap from there. But since I have lost some significant weight due to my sleeve, I was able to crawl on my hands a knees, get into the little living room tent and play with blocks and legos and dollys. The kids are 5, 3, and 1. That was the first time the five year old has seen me off the sofa. I had to have help getting up because of othopedic issues, but boy oh boy I had fun. This sleeve has been so worth the incovenience of some lifestyle changes. I'll…

Hi All! It's been one year since surgery. I am a slow loser but have lost about 60 lbs so far. It's been an amazing journey and I am so happy with this decision; the best decision I have ever made in my life. I have learned a lot about myself in this process and also what is working for me and what is not. Definitely the first 6 months are very critical and one should really stick to the eating plans and exercise plans. I am learning about my vices and my emotional eating habits. The addiction to food can be overwhelming. Now I have found that the human tastebuds take a few days to get accustomed to a taste. When I cut out the process foods and junk foods, the first few …

Hello everyone. I had gastric bypass surgery on May 19, and thankfully no complications so far. I was discharged from the hospital the day after surgery. Right now some of my stitches are sticking through and that is really annoying, but the incisions all seem to be pretty well healed. I started on "mushy food" and I have been tolerating them we'll, but have been finding that once I eat I continue to get hungry the rest of the day. Most things I read and people I have spoke to said they do not have hunger, but that does not seem to be the case with me. My nutritionist thinks I need more Fluid but I am already drinking almost 3 liters a day. Has anyone else experienced t…

I was sleeved 12/27/13 I'm down roughly 40 lbs and need to get rid of 60 more. My sleeve is not stretched due to scar tissue distorting the shape of the sleeve. My options : Re sleeve Or Bypass Totally confused! Please any words of wisdom appreciated! When I went for the sleeve it was easy to find many positive stories. The bypass procedure seems riskier. Help!

Hi, Surgery was 5/09. I'm experiencing discomfort almost leading to sharp pain in my stomach area, mostly in the mid left section, very close to the incision where the part of the stomach was removed from. Pain usually occurs when I twist and turn while laying down. Is this common. For my 3 weeks post op visit, my doctor said its common but now its becoming more uncomfortable especially while I lay on my side. Anyone having similar symptoms?

I was banded this morning! I was so nervous and excited! Everything went well, they found a large upset and stitched it up. Other than that, no complications. I have been getting up after every nap to walk around the house for 10-15 min. I feel a lot of pressure in my left shoulder, which they said the walking will help. Hopefully that means it will help quickly!

I'm getting sleeved in ten days and I have a ten year old daughter who is pretty upset that I'm doing this. Part of it might be because she's anxious by nature, but it also might be because she's already overweight, and may be wondering what this means for her, esp in terms of what we eat in the house and whether eating meals together will still be any fun. Would love any advice about how you handled things with your kids, esp girls in those very vulnerable tween/early teen years.

So I'm in my third week post op and I am hungry. I'm finding that not only do I feel tons better, but I now have my appetite back. I asked if I could get banded now and they told me no. To allow my stomach and incisions time to heal first. I'm eating a little more now. I'm extremely frustrated at this point. Any advice :-(

Hi, my name is Linda and I'm really new to this my start date is May 2014. I have been rather heavy most my life but never this heavy at 213 lbs. I have many health issues and on so many medications that increase the weight gain also that I need some help getting this weight off and keeping it off. I have been reading the many forums on here for a week now, every day I have read something new that will help me in my Quest to be thin, or at a decent weight. Some say your not over weight enough to have this done, but when you have to buy 1x and 2 x tops there is a weight issue. I started out at the PCP at 215 he said at 5'5 I have a bmi at 37. I have had my meeting with…

Was telling my husband last night how much I really hated the liquid portion of this diet. I just want some texture! But I was a good girl and I still put my cream soup in the blender to knock out any unwanted chunks. Welp, this morning as I'm getting ready for work I pull my scrubs put of the dryer and throw them on. OMG! They are fitting comfortably!! I don't have to tug at the fabric to loosen my tight spots I don't have to bend to stretch out my top to make sure it's fitting right! It's hanging comfortably on me! And I feel great in them! I am 6 days post op and I'm already down 22 lbs! Who knew this feeling would be so awesome?!

Well its been a long time coming but after a year of deliberation and tests and phsyc evaluations I had my VSG performed on the 20th of May, I started the Optifast liquid diet 2 weeks prior to reduce the liver and to start the weight loss journey, I have a relatively active job and I managed to lose 22lbs prior to surgery with the help of a few days at the gym. Since the surgery just shy of 3 weeks I have lost a further 24lbs with my goal weight only another 70lbs away

My name is Knapptown and I have just completed my Lapband surgery on 5/29/14. A little background - I am a 45 yr old male 6'3 - former football player. My weight had been gradually increasing since I laid my helmet down in 1994. When My career was over - I weighed 295lbs. The month prior to my operation - I weighed in at 355lbs. Although the weight I picked up in 25 years was just 60 lbs.... Carrying 295 lbs as a football player @ 25 is VASTLY different from carrying 355 lbs as a 45 year old man. I had no interest in carrying this type of weight into my late 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. So I maned up and banded up. I have several complications that go along w…

Hi Forum, I am new to the site and wanted to share that I had my VSG surgery on June 4th. I selected Dr. Atkinson from Las Vegas Weight Control Center and had my surgery at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, NV. From pre-op to 2 days post-op I am happy with the service I received from the LVWCC and Desert Springs Hospital. They were all very caring, informative and the post-op recovery was amazing. The nurses at Desert Springs (Tessie, Dena, Kim, Meghan) were great. My journey started several months ago after I was so disgusted with myself, nutrition and inconsistent weight loss results. I am a 38 year old male, who is 6'2 and pre-op was 325 lb. I have strug…
