POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by RussT,

Next week I will be 3 months post-op and I won't have to mix skim milk and Protein powder in my shaker bottle anymore. The nutritionist said I'll be able to buy pre-packaged Protein drinks, and I think that's going to be so much more convenient. Here's my question: I don't know what the best pre-packaged protein drinks to buy. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  3. Hi!! I've been on the hunt for a protein drink that was more concentrated as Premier Protein fills me up sooooo quickly I can hardly get one down. Any suggestions? I found a drink called "Pocket Protein" online that is a mix of whey and collagen protein and has 20g of protein in 2 ounces. Anyone tried or heard of it? The nutritional label looks perfect: zero fats, sugars, caffeine, and carbs. I still can't figure out where to buy it though but I'd like to try it!! Any other suggestions would be great too!! I've tried Ensure as well. Maybe with time I'll be able to handle the volume and "thickness" better. Thank you! Any feedback is appreciated!!!

I am 8 weeks post op gastric sleeve. I have been following the diet pretty well, but Friday and yesterday I ate some carbs (rice and pasta) which I have refrained from eating since surgery. Today I am extremely nauseous and feel like I want to vomit. My abdomen feels hard and swollen. My family is telling me to go to the ER, but I'm not sure if that is necessary. It could be something viral...should I wait it out or go the ER now?

  13. I officially started solids few days ago. Haven't done much except scrambled eggs and tuna because I'm scared. Today I was invited to go to a fancy brunch and was terrified! But I tried a few different things like smoked salmon, eggs, crepes and caviar and did not throw up. Then at a similar fancy dinner, had few nibbles of Korean food (soft cooked chicken, spoonful of veggie rice). I took other stuff from the appetizer tray (pork cooked soft) cut it up chewed and spit out because it just didn't feel like it was gonna go down and I didn't want drama at the table. I was so frustrated watching them bring all kinds of delectables to our table and knowing I couldn't tak…

Surgery is scheduled for January 30th, but I'm trying to get everything at work prepared for when I leave/return, etc. I currently work 4 days a week, 10-12 hours/day, and am sitting for the majority of that time at my computer, in meetings, etc. where I am not in a position to get up and walk around. I am considering requesting to work 5 days a week, 8 hours a day so I can spread my work out, and be able to fit more breaks/movement in. Is there anyone that works 10-12 hour days currently (sitting)? Would it make sense to split out my schedule to 5 days so it's not so overwhelming all in the compressed workweek? Any feedback/suggestions, etc. would be helpful! ~Sari…

  16. Hi, all. I'm about three months post-op now, and for about a month now, I've had numbness in my inner thighs and calves, my entire abdomen, and starting yesterday, tingling in my feet. I've also had extremely heavy periods since the surgery. I wasn't taking my Vitamins like I should've for the first two months or so, about, and after consulting my surgeon, they did bloodwork about a week ago, thinking I might be thiamine (b1) deficient. I got the results, and the surgeon says that everything looks fine, that my thiamine was within range, and that I should see my primary care doctor. With the holidays, I haven't had a chance yet (though not for a lack of trying to make an …

Hi everybody's. I was sleeved 7 weeks ago. Starting weight was 239. After surgery I went up 10 pounds from air, Fluid etc. lost 28 pounds by 3 weeks and stalled for 2 weeks where I hovered at the same 2 pounds. Then I started to lose again and this past Saturday I was down to 207. Since then I have been creeping up and today I am 210.5. . I had been drinking a small decaf iced coffee with skim milk for past week so I cut that out 2 days ago. I am eating 3 meals and 2 Snacks Usually stay between 800 and 1100 calories a day and have 70-90 gems of Protein. I did go out to dinner on Sunday and ordered a chicken dish with a balsamic dressing. How do you fight the hunger at night? I'm only a week out so maybe it gets easier but I've found myself being awake half the night with intense pain in my stomach from hunger... I try to ignore it but it's just keeping me awake. Do I really need to plan to wake up in the middle of the night to have a bit of a Protein shake? I'm so exhausted, I just want to sleep through the night! I've read a lot of posts about people second guessing their decision in the first few weeks post op and I'm definitely right there... Hey everyone. I had the sleeve gastrectomy a little over a month ago. The surgeon's office quoted me a price - which I was led to believe included everything. Last week, I received 2 bills in the mail (labs and anesthesiology) which come to an additional $3500! This was not expected at all and not in my budget. I'm about to review my paperwork to see WTH is going on. Anyone run into similar issues?

Good evening all, I'm newly banded, as of Friday morning and surprisingly I feel better then I expected, no nauciousness and I can drink most fluid without issue. However, I feel slight tenderness in my stomach in the area of the surgery. It does hurt when I walk extended periods because of swolleness. At times it feels rock hard and other times it passes ... I assume it's also digestive gases trapped. My question is I assume it's normal to be swollen from the surgery ... How long did it take you folks to get back to "normal"? Ok had surgery in September 2016, surgery went well, a few issues after but since end of November everything good. Last saw Surgeon in November. Now in 2017 new insurance does not cover bariatric serves at all, no follow up visits. If I go to Bariatric Dr. I have to pay full price for visit which runs around $250 a visit and they want me to see nutritionist which is $90 per visit, or my primary which is $35 a visit. How necessary is it to follow up with the Bariatric Dr. They want me to come 6, 9 and then 12 months, then 1 x a year. Think I can get away with seeing primary unless he or I feel there is an issue?. 35. I just had my surgery this morning (outpatient.). Sleeve along with a hernia repair. Surgery was at 9 AM, was discharged at 11:30 AM. I haven't had ANY pain meds since leaving the hospital and am having absolutely no problems getting my water and popsicles down. This ssems suspiciously easy. LOL. What's up with that?

  38. This is probably my biggest concern down the road once I can begin to transition back to normal foods. I know it's a mindset change in slowing down to eat, and I have been practicing that. I've always been a fast drinker and could wolf the food down when I was reckless. That being said even with all the recommendations of slowing down, small bites, etc., how quickly does your new stomach tell you to stop? Since we want to avoid that "Thanksgiving full" feeling I'm curious as to how quickly your body gives you feedback to say enough is enough.

I got the lap band converted to the gastric sleeve about 3 months ago. I've said this on the forum before. I get a pain or cramping that leads to the spine. I've went to the hospital or ER and they told me it may be an abscess.. It really is there and I don't think im supposed to feel this sort of thing. Its like a cramping connected to my back. Anyone ever heard of this? I'm seeing the doctor early next week. I really hope they can give me some answers. It may be because of my depression, but this is an actual cramping and pain. I hope I can get some help here.

  41. Hi all! I just wonder when do you you get to a place where your weight loss is done. Is this something that just happens, or do you make a choice? I'm 9 months post vsg. HW:268 CW:168. I've lost my 70% and met my surgeon's goal of 173, but not my personal goal of 145. Over the past 2 months, I've been fluctuating about 3 lbs up, and back down, but not getting past 168. I'm 5'6 and really would like to lose the last 30 or so pounds. I eat with my program and it's fine. I'm going to do the liquid diet for 5 days next week. I don't want to drastically change what I'm eating because I'm happy with it and realize that this is eating for my whole life, not a crash diet…

I am 5-1/2 weeks VSG post op and my energy level has dropped very low. Until the last 2 days, I have averaged 600-650 calories per day, 90-110 g of Protein, 25-35 g of carb a day. I usually get in 7-8 glasses of Water a day. The last couple of days I've tried adding another 100 calories and a few more carbs to see if that helps. No difference yet.
