POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by ryan_86,

I'm almost 20 weeks post-op, and I'm hungry. I eat on very regular schedule, and generally eat the same thing daily. My largest meal is dinner, which comes to around 4 ounces. I get about 1000 calories a day but I feel like I could eat 1500 without getting sick. I'm having to resist snacking, which wasn't a problem a month ago. I'm not feeling much restriction. Are there signs to look for in a stretched sleeve, and is there truly a way to "reset" a sleeve? Thanks Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  2. Started by greatladyanna,

8 weeks post op and have been back in the gym for 3 weeks now. Weight loss is going great and I'm not in any pain. But my ribcage feels tender all the time. You know when someone tries to crack your back by lifting you up from behind with your arms crossed against your chest? It kinda feels like someone did that and squeezed just a bit too tight. Is this normal? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm happy to say I am down 42 pounds and a pant size. Also down in the 200s. It's been years since I've been there! I'm glad I did this!! I've had no problems with anything. I have another visit with the surgeon in March so I'll probably get lab work then. I'm so excited!! This losers bench is awesome and comfy!! Hello, haven't posted in a while, hopefully there are still some good Veterans around here who can reassure me. Lately i've been noticing energy drops but also notice that I tend to get full faster? I mean I normally have cheeze string with about 8 cashews for snack. but this week I can only eat half of my cheese and nuts and I feel like I'm about to bust. Do fullness vary sometimes? should I be worried? I get the feeling it's like this for all my meals lately. 2 bites and I'm full I guess my "feeling" drained is a result of that eating less. but this week I can't even get out of bed to go to the gym. just worried a bit

I am 5 weeks postop and I have a general feeling of fatigue and I get winded really easily. I live in New York City so I'm often running up and down flights of stairs for my commute. When I get to the top of the stairs I have to stop because I'm so week. I want to start exercising but I'm so exhausted by the time that I get home from work I can't even think about exercising. Will this start to get better? Will I have more energy soon? Or do you think I should start exercising now even though I'm exhausted and build up my stamina and endurance? It was another one of those moments when I was about to throw in the towel. But i got over it told myself I dont have to do 10000 a day I can do 2000 maybe 3500 but then i had my surgery and I started to lose and lose and lose and this energy made me get up and walk I noticed that when i walk I can poop easier and the weight c…

I was warned about this but now it is so obvious people are hating on me for having success with weight loss. I have a friend who is always trying new diets and asking me to join her. I always politely decline. I have lost about 43 lbs and she looks about the same. I can see her looking me up and down and making comments about me not eating my food. I haven't brought myself to tell very many people about my surgery. I am not sure what is holding me back. My husband, daughter, parents, and best friend know. I plan to eventually let people know but I am just not quite ready yet.......????

I've never been one for meds, and this surgery has officially doubled the number of prescriptions I've had in my life. Has anyone else had adverse side effects? I've been drowsy and lethargic AH. I'be been chalking this up to the meds more so than the surgery, because by the evening I start to pep up a bit since I moved my evening round of bills to just before bedtime. Here's my list- liquid Fiber (been avoiding this lately because this stuff is some weapons grade laxative and it did its job) Miralax Tylenol (over the counter; only as needed) Oxycodone (I haven't been taking these- too scared of getting addicted and the pain has been very manageable or non-existen…

I went back to work yesterday, and made it through ok. Today was a bit tougher. Physically I don't have a ton of energy, and I am still sore. Wearing actual "work" clothes is difficult because my pants rub on my incisions, and my bra rubs on the one near the breast bone. It is just uncomfortable all around. I would say that going back to a desk job is doable after 1 week, but I think it is best to stay out at least 2 weeks if you can. The good news is that I still have not really had any complications. I am getting in all of my liquids, and Protein, and I am actually averaging about 500 - 600 calories a day already. I have lost 11lbs in the one week pre-op before the su…

So, I'm 2 months and 3 days PO and about 3-4 days of each week it is a STRUGGLE to eat - like I seriously don't want to chew and swallow. I don't feel bad, there is nothing medically wrong (I'm guessing) but my stomach just really doesn't want food in it. When I do eat, it doesn't make me vomit or anything, I just feel yucky (yes, I just used that very sophisticated term lol). I'm losing weight just fine and go to the gym 4-5 days/week to do weight-training and cardio. I truly feel great, just hate the days when nothing seems to make my tummy happy. Is there anyone else dealing with this? As a side note: I'm not getting in all my Protein (see reason above) and …

I feel like if I had a good idea of where I should be capping my calories during the various phases, it would help. However, I contacted my nutritionist about this and ask what I should consider the limit for calories during the "mushies" phase, she said they don't want us counting calories and just to focus on getting Protein and Water. While I understand what she is saying, the lack of problems I've had in eating so far makes me worry that I'm not going to …

Do you have particular blogs or you tube channels you follow because they are informative and motivating that you could share please. I did a google search and found some but many are old and have not been updated in a while. What concerns me in reading those is that many of them stopped posting when they started putting back on the weight and I am feeling a little apprehensive about the journey. Sure that first 12 months might be worth shouting about but I also want to see how others get through the tougher times. Thanks all.

I am seriously starting to freak out here. I had my surgery in july 2014 at 276 lbs and am now 210 lbs. I have been at this number for the longest and I don't know what's wrong with me.I have only lost 5 lbs since January. It makes me even more nervous because I'm only 1/2 way to goal I still have a long way to go. I'm only losing about 5 lbs every few months this can't be the usual. Anyone else started having loss issues at 8/9 months post op, how did you speed it back up again?

People often ask me what's it like post op. I'm almost 4 months out. My explanation. Have you ever been around a baby when it's being fed? Yep that's me. They eat one bite yay, then the second. If my tummy decided it didn't like the first, even if it did 100x before. You guessed it out it comes. So the story of my new life. Finally able to eat eggs and sausage for a few weeks. The inside of a sausage burrito from McD's. This morning "roo" my pouch says nope I no longer like that. After working a 10 hour shift at one client on my way to a 5 hour client now I just want to go home and hug my specially devoted trash can. Ugg. So I regret my decision, not one bit, but some …

I just had to share this. As of yesterday I am officially 100 pounds lighter from my first day of my pre-op diet on October 28, 2016. In fact, tonight I was 367 pounds so now it's 103 pounds lost from my starting weight of 470 pounds. I am over the moon. If anyone is on the fence about getting this surgery, let me tell you. It's the best choice I've made in years. You have to follow your doctor's advice and do what they tell you to do including what to eat and exercise. If you do that you will get results!

Hello all. Today I am one week post op and wanted to ask a question. I noticed Saturday that I started getting a rash around my longest incision. I called my surgeons office and they prescribed me a children's antibiotic. I followed up with them yesterday and they said it was probably the binder rubbing against my incisions so I started putting my binder over whatever top I wear for the day. He also said I couldn't put anything on it because it can get near my incisions and cause an infection. So today it's itchy as all hell and when I checked them, the rash has spread a lil more! I am on day 8, and I was cleared by my surgeon to move to soft foods. I never thought that I would be so happy to eat cottage cheese!! Some other small victories are that I am able to sleep on both sides, and not just my back now, so that makes for a better nights sleep. I can also drink with basically no restriction, which is great for getting in my liquids. I joked with my surgeon that he must have left my stomach in there because I wasn't having trouble drinking. Then I tried cottage cheese last night, and could only fit 2oz. Yay! This tool is working! I returned to work today, which has been a bit exhausting, but it feels good to get out of the house and back really…

Now that I have the scale I'm noticing a LARGE difference. For example I just measured out a food in the cup, 2 oz, and then weighed it, 0.9 oz. So which should I be using? The nutritionist wasn't very clear apparently when I last saw her. She suggested getting a scale and also said to have measuring cups and measure everything.
