POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by PAguy,

Hi everyone, I'm one week post op and I feel awful! My first stage post-op was one week clear liquids only.... No protein, no vitamins, nothing! Just clear liquids. Needless to say I've been miserable since I got home. I'm lightheaded, dizzy, lethargic, irritable, etc. (my poor husband). Today I started stage 2 which is full liquids. I had 2 protein shakes, a yogurt shake and of course water. I was hoping I would feel better now that I'm getting nutrients again, but I still feel the same. To top it all off, I've had terrible diarrhea since I got home. I mean crampingly bad. My a** is legit sore from it. PLEASE tell me this gets better? I'm about to spiral out into a…

Man I really hope i dont get banned for asking this but I don't know where else to turn. Prior to surgery I was a regular grass smoker (with a medicinal card) but am curious as to how safe it is after surgery because I know that cigarette smoke is harmful and can cause ulcers. Sometimes I really don't care to eat and it helps me force some Protein in me but I don't want to hurt myself. My surgeon told me he honestly doesn't know if it's as harmful as cigarette smoke but assumes it is. There's nothing on the internet about it either so I've kind of run out of resources :[ - Kaylee Ann ~ Surgerversary: 6/11/12

  3. Had surgery on 4/12/17 and I've lost 41 pounds since my only weigh in but today was my first day doing 86 grams of protein.... I had to do 2 scoops of my Syntrax Lemon Tea which is 23 grams a scoop twice. I don't know about y'all but protein has been my worst enemy next to those chewable multivitamins

  4. I'm trying not to go too fast or hard but i am reaching 64 no problem. I'm worried what this will mean going forward. The only things bothering me is some gas in my chest but walking helps and having my husband pat my back helps. I'll address this with my doc when I do my follow up, but I wondered about any thoughts before then. Worried I won't feel full ever and will over eat. Also it's definitely stomach hunger and not head hunger. Stomach rumbling and limited calories. Thoughts? Anyone else experience this?

I am 4 days out of operation.. in the clear liquids phase of the diet... struggling to get anything down. On the list of food from my doctor, it says yogurts. I believe they need to be sugar free and pretty much "chunk" free. Can anyone recommend a kind/brand for this? Hoping yogurt might get the nasty protein taste out of my mouth.

Hey everyone!!! So I know it's not unusual to go through stalls but I feel as if this one is my LONGEST. I've been at a stall for about 3 weeks now ! I'm sticking to my plan where I eat high protein and low carbs. Eating about 3-4oz of protein for my meals 3x a day and for snack will usually be a fruit or yogurt. Is it too much food? I try and get at least 30 minutes of cardio everyday as well. A little background of myself...day of surgery 345...3rd month check up was 287 and current weight is 252...I wanted to at least be at 245 when I see my surgeon which is on 6/23 PLEASE HELP lol any advice would be great!

I am needing some constructive criticism on what I can do to improve my numbers on the scale. I am almost 6 weeks post vsg surgery and down about 30lbs. I know the song; I didn't put the weight on overnight so I can't expect to lose it all overnight..... I know that. I don't know why I am not losing like I should. The last 2 weeks the scale has not moved. I'm exercising about 3x a week at the gym, eating mainly protein and still not losing. Any suggestions how I can get the scale to moving again. Also, will taking my vitamin have a part in this too. I haven't taken any because the ones I got before surgery makes me sick now, so I'm waiting on my order to come in from anot…

My surgeon recommended 40-60 grams of protein per day for women in his practice. From what I've read on here, most everyone has been told to get or gets way more than that. Does this seem to low to y'all? Wondering if I need to be getting more. I do tend to hit closer to 60 most days.

I'm 6 days post op and am still on liquids. I've been doing great - my only "cheat" was taking a lick of pasta sauce off my finger when I made my family dinner last night. I'm getting in 60g of protein via shakes and drinking as much as I can but lately I've been craving cakes & cookies hardcore. I just woke up from a quick nap and vividly remember sinking my teeth into a warm chocolate chip cookie. Am I going crazy? I never used to dream about food. Is this something I should prepare to get used to??? Side note, I was at my niece's birthday party over the weekend and drooling over the dessert table, which was filled with cookies and cake, and I've had a hard tim…

  17. Several months after surgery I began using protein bars instead of relying on protein shakes. I found Quest protein bars to be an excellent choice. They had high protein, low sugar and high fiber [to help with constipation issues]. They also tasted good and came in a variety of flavors. They came in handy in getting in the daily protein when I was on the go and couldn't drag around my Ninja blender to make my protein shakes. So a few minutes ago I received an email from GNC saying they were giving away free Quest Hero Protein bars for today only. So I thought this might be good information. But then I pulled up a food label on these new protein bars. They cont…

I walk when I can't make it to the gym I have been cleared for solids but it always comes back up so I've been doing protein if anything water, applesauce, grits, oatmeal, or baby food. However I don't eat the 4-6 meals I believe a day because I am still getting use to eating again and chewing followed by drinking but like I said my main concern is am I on the right track concerning monthly weight lost?

Or those of you passed that point but that can remember that time.... My surgery is 5/31 and I'm going on my honeymoon in October and we're going to Europe. I obviously know I will be eating much, much less but I want to be able to taste different foods without eating everything in sight like I normally would. Is that something that's possible at 5 months or will I still not be eating real foods? I understand the sleeve is a tool, and I intend to use it that way, I'm just more interested to see if I'll be eating regularly (for a sleeved person) at that time or still introducing foods. Thanks!

It's been a while so I thought I'd post an update. I'm 7.5 months post sleeve, and feeling great! I just got back from 2 weeks vacation in Ireland! It was so amazing. I was worried about the meals, and how to NOT gain weight. I love me some good beer, bread and potatoes so how do you go to Ireland without indulging? Well, I gave myself a break and I did eat some of the delicious Irish soda bread, a bit of potatoes and I gotta admit, quite a bit of Guinness! BUT, to equal it out, we walked a ton, like several miles a day exploring. One day in particular, my husband and I hiked 10 miles. It was up a mountain, then across the ridge and back down the other side. Inc…

Does anyone have instagram where they are documenting their journey with VSG? My surgery is scheduled for June 29th and I am most definitely starting an IG page to document my journey. My current personal IG page is @diamond_diva1323 so you can follow me there and I will seriously add you to my VSG IG account which is @fit_n_fine_diva. Just as this forum is motivational so are pictures and quotes and progress captured on IG. I have gotten so many great food and exercise ideas just from the people I follow on IG that have had the VSG. Look towards sharing my journey with you and hope to see your journey soon too!

I made it. Surgery on Friday and out of the hospital today. Feeling mixed right now. Not hungry, not nauseous. My belly is really distended and bloated. It is making me uncomfortable at this point. Getting the liquids in is tough and getting the food down equally as difficult. Doctors and staff was incredible. You know you have the right nurses when they do a little happy dance for passing gas and a big dance (with high fives) when you actually go! When I feel better I try to right a better description of my experience. Here we go.

I'm 2 1/2 months post op gastric sleeve now and haven't had any issues until yesterday. Every time I eat or drink I am having pain in my stomach and under my sternum that radiates to the center of my upper back. I haven't done any exercise out of the ordinary. I don't feel like I over ate or anything like that. The one thing I did differently is that I switched to a regular multivitamin PILLS about 4 days ago (instead of the chewable ones. At my last appointment a few weeks ago, my nutritionist had said I could start taking the pills after I finished up the chewables I have left. Has anyone else had this problem?

This is a big deal for anyone losing weight, but it is an especially big deal for me as I started at almost 400 pounds (397 to be exact). I now have only 19 pounds to go until my goal of 180 pounds. I am overcome with emotion today, but I am so pleased and proud of my success that simply could not have happened without changing my relationship with food. And I can't help but think about the 99 pounds I lost during my six month pre-op diet program while I was jumping through the insurance company's hoops. Without having done that work, I would be celebrating getting under 30…

The pain is minimal while I'm in a relaxed position like on my back in bed (1 on a scale of 1 to 10), increases to a 2-3 while sitting down, and 7+ when I bend over, twist, or move to sit up or down. I was crying a lot because I was really scared of anesthesia. This was my first experience ever being knocked out for more than just a few moments (previously, I've only ever had my wisdom teeth removed). The nurses were really supportive and I had a good experience meeting my anesthesiologist. We discussed getting something to calm me down even before we left the pre-op area - I accepted enthusiastically. I was aware of the "ride" over to the operating room but didn't feel anxious…

  49. I'm a little over 6 weeks post op, and was doing really well until a few days ago when I wound up in the hospital with a very painful kidney stone. I had been feeling so good that I stopped paying attention to my water intake, which lead to dehydration and the stone. The doctor at the hospital also told me that bariatric patients are at a higher risk for kidney stones. If you've never had a kidney stone, consider yourself very lucky.
