POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by BellaItalia088,

Hello, I was wondering what the average time off was for post op? I've heard most people go back after a week or two depending on what they do, and just wanted to see if anyone else had longer periods ? I am trying to decide on whether or not I should ask to apply for the short term disability pay Thank you

  2. Started by Stacie Ness,

I had sleeve surgery on May 8th and I have struggled with lack of energy since the beginning. I emailed with my dietitian and she says that my 600 to 800 calories are not enough, that I need to get in 1,000 each day. I weight also seems to be stuck for the last 5 days or so...help!!!

  3. Started by RHmama,

Has anyone had outpatient surgery? I'm scheduled for 6/1 at 7:30 am and need to check out of the surgery center by 5 pm. Has anyone else done this? Wondering how it was for you! I'm nervous! I'm self-pay, and I could pay more to stay overnight but the doctor indicated I don't need to. Thank you!

Regret.......... you probably came here to hear about how I regret my sleeve surgery. But it's the opposite I'm madly in love with my sleeve (my banana belly[emoji177]) I always read on here why people hate it, but I never read about how people are embraced by the surgery. It has made me a completely different person than who I was 6 months ago. I'm confident, successful, and beautiful. Don't get my wrong I went threw ups and downs pre op, and post op. But at the end of the day I'm almost 100 pounds down, I look back at myself last year around this time and hate the person I see. If you went threw this surgery, and are having any regret.. don't... it's a beautiful thing t…

3 weeks post-op here and I am having a hard time not having something to drink after or when I eat. How bad is it to drink with meals? Sometimes food tastes salty or the seasoning sticks with me and I need water to wash the taste away. Why is it bad to drink with meals?

  9. I have a few go to drinks that meet my needs of organic, sweetened w stevia or similar but am looking for any other suggestions. I also found one yogurt today that met my needs!

  10. Started by AmandaWho,

Anyone not on liquids post op? I was on a 2 week pre-op liquid diet and day one at home I'm off liquids and in soft mushy foods from the food processor like fish, tuna, chicken and eggs. I see a lot of people on liquids or shakes for a week or so after and was just wondering if anyone was on the same diet as me and how successful you were. Thanks!

  11. I had a bypass about 2.5 weeks ago, and everything is going well. My surgeon told me I have to start taking Nexium in 20 mg packets in order to avoid developing ulcers at the staple sites. I haven't been able to find any at any store or online. Is this because it is prescription only?

Can you stall at 3 weeks what should I do did not expect this I feel like a failure . I lost 29 since preop and 12 since surgery now nothing in a week and a half what to do help!

  13. So I am buying my 2nd week mark in 3 days but I feel like I am able to take in a lot more that what it seems I should be. I have no problem getting water down (some gas bubbles here and there but nothing painful) and same thing with my protein drinks. Now that I can eat yogurt I and able to eat at least 4 yogurts a day (they are 5.3oz each) I eat 4 which give me 60g of protein and I have been drinking my water. But I haven't any restriction or "full" feeling. Also once I moved to yogurt I haven't lost anything for 4 days now... is any of this normal?

I need ideas for getting some needed calories! I was sleeved 6/1 and I'm on liquid only for 3 weeks. I'm so hungry. The soups/broths I've been trying are so salty....protein shakes so sweet. I'm feeling weak because I feel like I'm barely getting enough calories to exist! I got about 240 calories in yesterday....and about 60 grams of protein. With unflavored protein powder, I'm able to get protein but it is only about 60 calories. Any suggestions/recipes for liquid phase? I'm going to make some homemade veggie soup and blend it, but that won't be very high calorie, even if I add protein powder to it. Thanks!

I was sleeved on 6/1/17. I have been getting most of my liquids in but I am starting to still feel hungry. I have been able to eat baked potato soup but very little just cause of the calories. I also had some table food and made sure that it was chewed very fine so that it went down smooth. I wanted to know if anyone has ate soft solid foods this early. I am thinking about making a tuna alas with Greek yogurt for dinner this is still pretty soft

Hello all! This is my 1st post here. I had vsg 5/31, stayed in the hospital a few days due to not tolerating any PO intake and intense nausea. I'm home on day 6 post op, and I am struggling to get all the liquids in. I was told to transition to full liquids but it has not been going well. The nausea is so intense with protein shakes I just haven't been able to stomach them. I have been living on popcicles, broth, water, clear protein, and some yogurt. I have also been having horrible diarrhea the past two days. Is this normal?! I am so wiped out, I just wish I was getting enough in so I could be on the mend! Any advice is very appreciated!!

I'm just about a week out (tomorrow) and I barely eat. I just can't do it. I can't hold a lot of food. I have a fork full here, a fork full there, a protein shake for breakfast. I'm only getting 30g of protein and 40oz of water a day. If I push it, I get really nauseous. I know the new stomach shouldn't hold much but is this normal for week 1? I've heard other people are hitting their water and protein goals and I'm struggling.

Hi - I am now on the pureed phase and am averaging 500-600 cals per day. I am loosing 1-2 lbs per day, which seems a little excessive. I would like to moderately up my fat intake with good fats. I do not like avocados which would be the easiest approach. Any other thoughts to up fat content (I am mostly eating plant-based protein shakes, pureed lentil soups and broths). I love eggs, but I tried a soft scrambled egg, ate half, and immediately vomited, I think it is just too soon for eggs. Thanks for your advice/recommendations!

I'm 7 weeks out today, and yesterday I ate a small bunch of cold grapes. A little while later, I started getting all sweaty and had a massive attack of blast-o-matic diarrhea! I felt awful! Was that dumping? I've been really careful about what I've been eating, and I was thinking the sugar in the grapes caused this? Or maybe it was just the skins? I have no idea, but it'll be a while before I try grapes again.

  23. I bought a large tub of isopure unflavored protein powder. It mixes really well with full liquids and soft foods. The problem is that I fill up on soft foods so quickly I'm not getting my protein in, so I was thinking about mixing the protein powder with my water and other fluids. Has anyone tried this? I do have a couple bottles left of isopure protein water, I'm just sick of having the same flavor all the time.

Hey guys, I was sleeved on 5/16, and I lost 10 lbs in the first 10 days, and since I started purees I have stopped losing weight and actually have gained 3 lbs. I know they say you can stall at week 2 or 3, but this is so beyond frustrating. How in the world have I GAINED weight? I haven't eaten more than 800 calories in a day. I know I just need to keep at it, it is just so upsetting that I went through all of this and I'm not getting any results. (Not losing inches either, I checked). They told me about the hair loss, I researched the hair loss online, but the feeling of pulling out 15-20 hairs at a time is not a fun one! Hoping this ends as fast as it started haha. I am, however, down 42 lbs since surgery, 60 lbs since the start of this whole process. And I have tons of energy. I also didn't get any of the complications I've heard of others getting. So if hair loss is my biggest obstacle, I can deal with that. But it is not fun.

Hey All, So as the subject title says, I fainted at a concert last night. I've never fainted in my life, so I'm pretty shaken up. I'm 8 months post-op, and I know I shouldn't really be drinking yet, but I did have about a quarter of a drink over the period of an hour (during the opening band). I had dinner before (salad with chicken) and had been drinking plenty of water all day. As the first band ended, I started to feel a little dizzy, so I told my friend I needed to lean up against the railing. As I started to walk over there, the dizziness increased tremendously, and very quickly. I just remember holding on to the railing, and telling my friend "this is not good…

  29. Hello my name is Andrea I had my sleeve two weeks ago and I have only lost two pounds. This is really discouraging. Is this normal. I am following my dr's orders to the cue. The only think I do cheat is that I put a little honey in my yogurt but everything else is perfect. I'm drinking my protein and my water as well as my broths and soups. I can't believe that after two weeks of only consuming liquids to the equivalent of no more than 800-900 calories a day I saw so little loss. I almost cried when I went to my dr today. What am I doing wrong? I am really depressed about this, especially since I hear of people losing so much weight at the beginning. My weight on the day …

So, today is my first day home after surgery and I am honestly scared and overwhelmed. There's so many things to remember to do and notnto do, to take and not to take. I was able to do about 1 tbsp of fat free ricotta cheese today and I tolerated it just fine but I was scared to take more. My biggest problem is drinking. As soon as I get any liquid in my stomach, the cramping is unbearable. I'm assuming things will get better with time but right now I am so scared of failing.

Hi all, I was sleeved June 1st and I am in post op hell. I am home from the hospital but am struggling to get anything down. It is slowly improving but so slowly I'm really worried about dehydration & not getting enough protein to heal properly. When I try and drink anything I get terrible reflux & gurgle back. I've tried warm drinks, milky drinks, water, nothing seems to help. I have been prescribed heartburn reducers but they make me sick so I can't take them. Any suggestions or do I just have to wait for it to get easier? In addition I'm constantly producing a lot of spit that I can swallow back as it makes me sick, did anyone else get this? If so does it pass?…

On top of that, my mother was pushing me to stay another night. Of course, I wanted out! I finally came to my senses and realized I didn't want to have a catheter for a week. I said I want to stay. I haven't eaten anything different to when I was resting at home but I have this new nauseous feeling which I haven't had before. Im not sure if it's because I'm moving around more but it's constant. I can feel it in my throat. Is this because I'm being more active rather than resting? I only had nausea for 2 days after my surgery. And haven't had it since. Hi All. My wife just had her VGS 5/17/17 and mine isn't until 8/31/17. I know we all have our diets that we are supposed to follow after surgery but my wife is a stubborn rule breaker! I worry that she will hurt herself internally but know that all Doctors diets are different. She is basically eating regular food, although only a few bites, and is now wondering what the repercussions could be. Does anyone out there have any experience with eating too soon or is she okay as long as it isn't hurting her? Thank you in advance for all your answers
