POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

Hey all, I'm just wondering what foods/meals are in your regular rotation? Is it because they are high protein, very filling, you like the taste, your daily small guilty pleasure... etc..? I'm hoping to find some meal ideas. Foods in my regular rotation: I drink a premier protein shake every morning I have 4oz egg whites and 2slices of ultra thin cheese every day for breakfast I eat yogurt every day I add trulemon to my water every day because I (still) can't tolerate the taste of plain water. If you have any foods I'd love to know what they are. Thanks!

Hi everyone ! I was sleeved June 11th & seem to be doing pretty well except for some serious fatigue & weakness . I just barely got through my shower today without being completely drained ! Especially after using my arms above my head to wash my hair ! I had to get out & rest & catch my breath before I could even dry off ? Is this normal ? Does it eventually go away ? And how long does it usually take gain your strength back ?

I apologize that I am asking a million questions on this forum, but I have another I'm 5 days post op and was told to do a clear liquid diet until a full week after. Today, I wasn't starving, but really felt like my body needed food. So I ate a tiny about of tomato soup and some sugar free pudding. I didn't have any trouble getting it down, but I am unsure if when I am full. Obviously, I knew enough to stop eating after the pudding, but how do you know when you're full? Sadly, I'm used to knowing I'm full because I've finished the food on my plate. Do you just measure it out for awhile? Any suggestions?

I am 1 month and a couple days post op and have lost about 30lbs. I have already started noticing my underarms getting very flabby ☹️ my arms have always been an insecurity and although i'm glad they are getting smaller the loose skin isn't helping. Does anyone have suggestions on what i can do exercise wise? Did any of you start any exercise specifically to your arms to prevent very loose skin? help!

Soooo... I'm 8 weeks post op.... 50 lbs down, which is great! But I'm having back issues from an old issue years back. Curious if anyone else is dealing with something similar? About 10 years ago I used to move pianos for a living and threw my back out at a job. Ever since then that spot has always bothered me but only occasionally. Sometimes it would just ache and at others if I turned the wrong way, I would throw it back out. Even when I get massages I have to tell them to skip that lower side because it hurts too much. Anyways after losing the 50 lbs that spot on my back is killing me everyday now. Aleve does help but I don't want to use any of that stuff on the regula…

I am a couple months out from surgery and I read "I lost my boobs" ALOT as well as from people that I know that have had WLS. I am wondering if anyone already had implants when they had the surgery and how they "held up" after losing weight. I had mine done when I was thin and gained weight afterwards. If anyone was in my boat pre-surgery and is now a post I would appreciate any input!

I am now about 5 weeks out now but I am concerned with my calorie intake. Is this something I should be concerned with? I am eating small meals, well pretty small, "Tinkerbell" portions. I eat about every 2 hours, but I don't feel like it's enough calories? I do watch my carb and fat intake and wasn't sure if I should be concerned with my calorie intake. So far today it's about 350 calories.

Good morning everyone, I am 10 weeks post op and have been stuck at the same weight for the last 2 weeks. I am down a total of 43 pounds since surgery. I drink 2 protein shakes a day, and eat 3-4 times per day. A sample of my meals include a lite string cheese and a small fruit cup in water not syrup. Another sample meal would be 5 tablespoons of tuna fish and 4 or 5 whole wheat crackers. I do eat chicken for meals occasionally as well. I am drinking about 60 oz. of powerade Zero or crystal light every day also. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

I'm getting in the 64oz of water. I'm taking in 500-600 calories and 60-90 gm of protein. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this?

  17. Hi all. I was sleeved June 6, 2017 and have been doing, obstensibly, very well. I'm one of the ones with absolutely no complications so far. I had next to no pain. I was walking on my own accord as soon as I woke up from surgery and have have no food toleration issues whatsoever. I've also lost 62 pounds, 35 post op as of day 17. No regrets or mood swings at all so far. My concern, oddly enough is that everything seems to be going almost too well. I'm tracking calories and macros and consuming at least 60 grams protein, at most 800 calories and at least 50% calories from protein. I'm also running already. I do however still have hunger and I've pretty much progress…

Does anyone know how long it takes to stretch your pouch? I had my surgery 4/28/17 and got my first fill 5/25/17. I've not had any problems with any kind of food. I almost feel like I'm "normal" (before Band) but I'm getting a little worried that I could possibly stretch it out. I know I will need another fill, which I have another appointment the beginning of July. I just need to know how long it could take to stretch it.

  21. I had surgery exactly a week ago. I feel hungry all the time and my temptation for bad food has come back. I haven't dared gone near it even though my entire family eats fast food and delicious carbs around me all day long. I can't really tell the difference between being full or having gas? But i ate yogurt about 3 hours ago and am starving! Is it normal to feel this hungry all the time at this stage? Also anyone have really good meal ideas for this week? I'm getting tired of the same thing always. On a side note any one have recommendations for next week meals when I get to start adding meat?

I had an ultrasound done last week to check my gallbladder. My provider's office called me today to schedule an appointment to come in to discuss the results but couldn't discuss them with me over the phone so I called the imaging center and they sent me the ultrasound report. In it it showed that I have moderate to large amount of sludge in the gallbladder and also that I have a "hyperechoic mass involving the left lobe of the liver" and recommended a CT for further visualization. My surgeon's office told me there was no rush in me coming in to discuss the results so that makes me feel a little better... but I wanted to know if there was anyone else that had had this sho…

Need advice from vegetarian or mostly vegetarian sleevers out there. I met with the Dr yesterday and he said that I should research vegetarian diet compatibility with VSG. liquid Protein is fine for the first 4 weeks but he feels a SOLID protein like a bite of chicken that will basically sit in your post-Op stomach for a long time is what helps people feel full and not overeat. Vegetarian substitutes like Beans or tofu or seitan apparently just get processed by the stomach acids and move into the intestines fast.. Making you feel hungry again. I am mostly vegetarian. I eat eggs, dairy etc. Will occasionally eat chicken or fish in restaurants but I do not cook meat a…

I had surgery June 22 and have been on Phase 1 liquids of water, jello, broth and protein shakes. Does Week 2 start this coming Thursday June 29 and Week 3 July 6 and Week 4 July 13? Not sure how many friends and family I have that are actually in support of this and it's taken me many years to come to this decision along with this past year of getting clearances! All my drs can agree on seem to be this procedure! I truly hope I have no complication and that I am making the right choice. Thank you to this support groups for at least giving a safe place to voice my journey !

Everyone that I'm normally around knows I had surgery and they laugh with me when it makes noises but when I'm somewhere and it does it people look at me. It's loud when it does it. How long will it do that? I'm almost 3 weeks post op. I have lost about 21 lbs. since the day of my surgery. However, the past four or five days, I haven't lost any weight. Is it possible to have a weight loss stall this early? I get so worried and nervous that this isn't going to work now that I'm actually eating real food and not the liquid stage. Is a stall this early normal?

  38. Started by LESLIEH,

I don't know if this is normal or not or just maybe in my head. I constantly have to remind myself to eat and if I don't I get massive headaches. But after I eat give or take about an hour my stomach growls, like I'm hungery. Why is that?? I thought we no longer have hunger "attacks". Could it be my food digesting? Seriously after I eat about 2 oz's I'm extremely full and theres no way I could be hungery again.

Hello. I had my sleeve done April 2015. Started off great lost about 90 lbs. when I went in for follow ups a few months later, doctor felt I was losing to fast and was sent to the ER to get IV. Since then, I think I became fearful of being sick or admitted. It's 2 years later and I have been stuck for about a year. I can tell my stomach has stretched and gain a few lbs. it's truly getting me down, feel stuck and don't know what to do. I feel like I'm failing and haven't seen my doctor since... fearfu. I don't want to have all I went through to be in sin and want to get back on my road.

I've been experiencing sharp pain over my belly button (especially in and around the area where the incision was made during the surgery). At times I find it hard to inhale and exhale too. I have been going through every little detail in my mind, but cannot remember lifting anything heavy. How many of you still use a lot of sugar free products daily? I know it's the best option for weight loss but I worry about the chemicals and fake sugar. About 6 months ago I stopped eating frozen meals, reduced fat foods or processed foods. I felt great but I realize now my portions were way too big. I am 14 days in so I still have a long way before I can eat solid food. My goal is to be able to lose weight but not rely on "diet" food. I love to cook and don't mind putting the effort in for meal prep. But is that realistic? What plan have you found success?
