POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by bridgieb925,

Hello all I am currently 5 weeks post-op rny gastric bypass. I am on the soft foods stage and have been doing pretty well. I measure my food and try to eat about 2 ounces at a time. This weekend I was at a barbeque and they are shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were very small, but as I was cooking a chatting I noticed I ate about 8 ounces of shrimp. I was not uncomfortable or anything just worried. I am never able to consume this much. Any ideas?

  2. I am 8 weeks Post op today. Feeling great, with absolutely no problems to report. I have progressed through food to the point where I am able to even eat steak. I chew it really well, and only eat about 2oz. My last food to conquer is raw veggies, which I just got cleared for this week. I see a salad in my near future! [emoji3] I started my workout program this past weekend, and I have to say that being almost 50lbs lighter made it easier to get through. I do the BeachBody programs. Right now I started over with the 21 Day Fix workouts, and some of them are pretty intense. Even though the workouts are still difficult, I noticed hat I don't get as winded as I used to. Als…

Last weekend I reheated an omelette and threw up. I was nauseated for three days after this. Today I ate ground beef for the first time and got very sick and threw up. I expect I'll be nauseated again for a bit. Is it normal to be nauseas for days after eating something that doesn't agree? I'll be four weeks post op tomorrow. I am on phenegran as needed and omepramozole daily.

  5. I had my surgery 12 days ago, and I know Im suppose to rest and whatever. And mostly I am. I walk a bit or use elliptical but not long. 15 mins tops at a time. Im always tired. Always. Before surgery Id sleep 6 to 8 hrs a day. Now I sleep 10 to 12. Im tired throughout the day and sometimes take naps. Is this normal? My diet is clear liquid although Ive cheated and had a few spoonfuls of soup or a teaspoon of peanut butter. (Saved my sanity) I drink lots of fluids and get about 30g of protein a day, trying to work up to more. I just have no energy. I really wanted to start working out but my legs are unstable or I want to sleep. I read of people doing long walks…

Hi all - I'm a new sleeves, May 22. Day 6 post op. I'm suffering from nausea. Zofran does seem to help but just wondering how long it'll go on. And I have headache in my neck that just won't quit. Just looking for some reassurance. Having trouble getting my protein and water in. I'm up to about 35 oz of water but only about 30-45 grams protein. Still feel hungry but stomach rebels and won't take it. And I'm trying walk but get weak and lightheaded. How are some people walking a mile or 2? A flight of stairs and I have to rest!!

Hey guys. I got my 3 month blood work back the other day and aside from vitamin A deficiency, I also had a low level of prealbumin. My NUT thought it was explained by low protein intake, but after she told me to get at least 60 grams a day, I told her I routinely get 80 grams a day, and she was stumped. She said not to worry, because the level wasn't super low, but I wanted to see if anyone here had any insight! I certainly don't want to be malnourishing my body, but I couldn't eat any more protein if I tried! Does anything else cause this low level?

I'm just over 3 weeks post op. Ever since my op I've only had water no other fluids. I had a sip of fruit juice the other day and it was so sweet that I couldn't drink it. Does food taste different post op? Do your tastebuds drastically change?

  13. I am only 4 days post op, had my surgery May 24th. I started at 239.4, then I went on my one week liquid diet and went down to 230. After surgery when I was weighed, I had gone back up to 238.2. I am still not down to my pre surgery weight and I am following my directions exactly. What I am wondering is when did you all start losing your weight, how many days out? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi all. I'm close to the 1 year mark for surgery. I'm at my goal weight and I'm working on my stretch goal (which has to do with fitness but will result in a few more lbs gone). Since surgery I've eliminated some foods (no fries since June of last year!) and I typically hit my protein and carb goals. I've had great success but I find myself craving fruits and veggies and I don't have room for them. Two of my children are vegetarians and I've been giving serious thought of eliminating red meat, chicken from my diet. Much of my protein intake now is not animal-based so it would not be a huge stretch. I would love to hear from anyone who is at gw and has a plant-based diet. …

I had RNY Friday, and I am pretty sore and my belly feels swollen, I have been able to get fluids down, so that is a plus. My question is, the scale hasn't budged at all since I went into the hospital. Does it take a little while for the scale to start moving?

  16. Hey guys! I just wanted to share what I just had for dinner! In phase 4 you can't have pasta but you can have tofu. So I made something that I made on my pre-diet. Ingrediants: Canned Chicken Tofu Noodles Almond milk Parmesean cheese I made "alfredo sauce" by heating up some almond milk (I would guess you could use FF/1% milk), I added grated parm cheese until the thickness was right. I also chopped up the Tofu noodles and canned chicken. I added that to the skilled with my sauce. I mixed it together and, voila! It was tasty. It went down smooth, And I have had some issues with some other things. No issues. -Joe M.

I started off coming out of surgery having problems... and 25 days later on feeding tubes (TPN Libids). I have been having nothing but problems. The Upper GI doesn't show leaks, but the pill test won't go down. Everything I try and eat comes back up. After being re-admitted to the hospital, it's now scheduled to have an endoscopy to dailate my limb so I can swallow again. I have to wait 30 days from the surgery date so no stitches rip. Needless to say I am pretty miserable. The pic line, the TPN, the nausea and vomiting. Please tell me someone there is light at the end of this tunnel and when?!?

  20. So I have been home for a little over a day now and I'm trying to move as much as possible to get the gas out. But every time I go to stand up I fee like my entire stomach area were the incisions are super tight and then slowly lose that feeling once I start walking around. Also the area were they pulled out the drain is still leaking. I called the dr and basically told me that is all normal, but I wanted to see if anyone may have experienced something like this.

  26. I got my sleeve on Wednesday, and I feel awful. The gas is going, which is good, but I'm really disgusted by the taste of protein shakes right now, and the texture. And those chewable vitamins!! I can barely get them down without vomiting. I know I'm not getting in enough water-- I just can't take more than a few tiny tiny sips before my stomach has a little cramp and tells me to stop. So I wait and start again after 10-15 minutes, but it took me 12 hours to do 8 ounces of water today, and maybe 6 oz of protein shake. I am so freaking far from my goals. AND-- I haven't even lost any weight at all, after eating virtually nothing for six days. That scares me, like maybe this…

I'm so tired of not being able to drink without it coming up and having to burp. More discomfort than pain. Has anyone else had this issue and will it ever go away????

I've only told a few close family and friends about my surgery. Only 6 people know. I have not told anyone I work with. My manager knew I was having elective surgery but she didn't ask what I was having. I've currently got 4 weeks off from work. I know when I go back to work people will notice I've lost weight and will ask questions naturally. But I don't know what to say, I don't want to lie but I'm not ready to tell people about my surgery yet. Any advice?

  35. I am 3 days out of surgery. The first 1.5 days, I was very nauseous without meds, then this seemed to just disappear almost instantly the end of day 2. I have had a bowel movement and passed gas, the whole 9 yards, so my nurse told me to move on to phase #2 which is where I am at. I currently feel bloated and my stomach looks very bloated, even though I've been walking a lot, starting at the hospital. The reason I bring this up, is because I constantly feel "full" which I assume is the bloat I am currently experiencing. When I eat or drink according to the guidelines, I never feel nauseous or "full" from the full liquid diet; rather, I just feel this bloat all the time. I…

Suggested Foods listed are yogurt, low-fat cream soups, sugar free pudding, milk products, applesauce, oatmeal, cream of wheat, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, protein shake, and everything from stage one. Before the surgery I had no issues getting my water requirement in. i've never been a fan of water, but using the dansani drops really made a big difference. After surgery is a different story. I am really struggling to get it all in, and drops and plain water make me feel ill every sip. So... I brewed up a pot of decaffeinated tea with a bag of red zinger herbal tea and threw in some sweet and low and it's incredible!!!!!! I hope this hits my water requirement, it should right. If a protein drink hits my quota then so should this, right?
