POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

Hi Guys I was wondering what your experience has been with loose skin and what steps you have taken to reduce it or remove it?

OK. this post is meant for me to vent. I'm so tired all the time. OK. So I had my surgery April 24th. I'm down 28 pounds!!!!! Awesome. But... This has been significantly harder than I expected. Surgery had a complication (tore a hole in my stomach while repairing a hernia) that needed fixing and that cost me an extra day in the hospital for a total of 4 days. Went home, only to return with a pulmonary embolism in my right lung. Another 4 days in agony in the ICU. I have myasthenia gravis and that already has me in a constant state of weakness, but with the PE I seem to be in a super state of weakness all the time. I can't force down the food or the liq…

I'm in the pre op liquid diet phase. I have a lot less energy than I normally do. I can't workout, I struggle to work my whole day plus commute without having to close my office for a nap. And it doesn't help waking up every couple of hours to use the bathroom. I'm tired! This will continue post surgery but I'm wondering when it will return to normal. 2 months post op? Yesterday I felt really good. I'm 4 weeks post op. So I cleaned, did some laundry (I've done it since 2 weeks out with help) and vacuumed a small area. Now I have a tender area below the middle area of my right breast to about 4 inches above my belly button. I'm hoping I just used some muscles I haven't used in a while and not done something to my sleeve. I'm drinking with no issues and am not in real pain.

  7. Any suggestions?

  9. Hello everyone! I'm about 3 1/2 weeks post-surgery (sleeved on 4/26) and I wanted to share with you all some resources I've found helpful in tackling this part of the journey. Apps/Websites Labdoor.com (Free) - "Labdoor is an independent company that tests supplements. We find out whether products have what they claim and if any harmful ingredients or contaminants are present. Then, we grade and rank those products, write reports, and publish that information for free, so consumers can confidently buy the best supplements for their health." My surgeon and medical team has me on a daily multivitamin, B-complex supplement, probiotics, calcium + vitamin D, iron, an…

  10. A long gulp of ice cold water. That's what I miss the most. Yes I can sip water, which tastes nothing to me like it did before the surgery, but it's not the same. Feel like I can't quite get my thirst quenched. Anyone else miss this?

  11. Hello all, I am scheduled for 5/31 and I am getting married in October. My current weight is 208 (I have a heart condition and PCOS, so I qualified for surgery). I'm wondering how much weight someone at my size can lose in the 4 months after surgery. I'm concerned about having my dress taken in and whether or not it will fit for the wedding so any input from someone who started around my size would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I am 12 days post op gastric bypass. I had an egg for breakfast and 2 oz flaky tapalia for lunch. Then a few hours ago I ate 5 oyster crackers. I'm still on puréed foods so I know it was wrong. I threw up about a hour ago and my stomach is still having spasms and hurts pretty bad. I assume it's dumping? Is there anything that can help? Thank You!

  17. I'm back at work 40+ hours a week..."physical labor" and all I can do is rest when I get home. I don't want to go anywhere but home after a long day. I'm not eating enough , not drinking enough fluids to go hanging with my girls. They don't understand...and I could care less it's the weekend. I know it will be at least another month before I feel like ME!... How are you new sleevers feeling at work or after work? Are you exhausted?

  18. Ive tolerated everything such as water broth, jello and protein but I hate drinking the protein shakes. I find it too sweet now and it always take me more than hr to finish it. The thickness leaves behind a chalky taste and sometimes I have to wait a while to have another sip because I'm afraid that I'll start coughing. I coughed the other day and I swore I broke a stitch (I'm exaggerating) but it was definitely not a cool feeling. Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

Another thing I'm wondering about is meloxicam and the sleeve. I had shoulder surgery a few years back and the meloxicam is the only thing that gives relief. 29. Hey guys, hoping you can help me out. So I'm just over two years post-op. While I have lost a lot of weight, I have plateaued, but I mostly think it is my fault and I'm a little bit worried. For the past 6-7 months I have been eating too much. I haven't necessarily been forcing food down my throat, but I've definitely overate a bit on many of my meals, and I've had more meals in general. I started seeing a personal trainer and he got me tracking my food. I've been eating on average 1800 calories a day and this has kept my weight stagnant, but I still have more to lose. Tracking my food was great for me because I can really see where I went wrong and how to fi…

Whoop! I'm officially post-op! VSG was yesterday and I'm considering it my new birthday. What a life changer! I have been having most of my pain over the RUQ, where my gall bladder used to be. It was the pain causing me to use my PCA pump the most. When the doc rounded last night he told me he found and repaired a ventral hernia (also called an incisional hernia). The day was okay otherwise. Got up and walked some. The night had been a little rough. Can't wait for the Upper GI leak check this morning to get to have some ice chips. Hope everyone else who went yesterday is doing well, and blessings to everyone to go in today.

  33. Hi everyone, Before my surgery in December 2016, I had a completely normal gallbladder. However, on Tuesday of this week I had the most horrible stomach pain imaginable and was rushed to the ER. I'm not exaggerating when I say that a gunshot or knife wound would hurt just as much. After about 45 minutes the pain subsided, but the ER doctor insisted on an ultrasound. Needless to say, my gallbladder is now full of stones so I'm having it removed next week. I met with my surgeon today about the gallbladder issue, but also admitted that the upper part of my stomach directly underneath my breastbone felt bloated and tender, just like it felt before I even knew I had a he…

Stopped in to ALDI while killing time this afternoon. I was surprised to find cases of Hint Water (still, not sparkling) for $9.99 (typically $16-22, depending on where you buy). Also, they had organic no-sugar-added Apple & Eve juices (33 oz for about $2.60). Both approved by my surgeon for the post-op liquid phases.

I'm 2 weeks post op tomorrow. Recovery going really well so far however I have no appetite or desire to eat/drink anything. I am on puréed foods already at my surgeons request and they go down well as long as they are not too thick. I'm getting hardly any calories a day as I cannot have too much puréed food before I'm full. I feel so weak as a result of this. Any little thing exhausts me. Does this get better over time? Will my energy and my appetite return? Feeling a bit deflated even though I can see I've lost weight already I'm really worrying this is the way it'll be from now on.

Good afternoon all, Prior to reading further, if you are going to judge me and tell me that it's my fault and that I don't have any self control...spare yourself the time typing and just move on. I had the Gastric Band procedure in August 2013. Did ok but that last year and a half just could not find the "sweet spot" and either it was too restrictive or not restrictive enough. After numerous discussions with my surgeon, we decided that the revision from band to sleeve was the way to go. In June 2016 my Gastric Band was removed, gave my stomach a couple months to recover and in August 2016 I went in for the Gastric Sleeve procedure. I find that there is very lit…

So today has been a tough afternoon emotionally and mentally. I feel pretty alone, because I am going through this major change and no one else in my life is, which can feel very isolating. All my loved ones are supportive, and it's hard for anyone close to me to understand what I'm going through. I feel so lucky to have a place like this to let things out but it's been difficult just thinking of all my friends out eating, drinking & enjoying the day when I'm sitting on the couch alone is various states of discomfort. The fact that I'm about 15mins from starting my period probably isn't helping my pity party, but sometimes you've got to let things out to feel better. …
