Advancing to purée and soft foods

How long post op were you allowed to advance to purée or soft foods? I will be 4 weeks post op before my next nutrition appointment. I'm not sure I can make it on full liquids for that long.

I believe it was after 2 or 3 weeks but my surgeon highly suggests not puréeing your food and rather learning how to chew it to a purée consistency before swallowing.

I am grateful he did that way because I don't have any issues with puking or other common problems some people seem to have. 11 years later I still chew my food very very well out of habit and I am thankful for that. It's rare now, but I know almost immediately when I've taken too big of a bite. It causes very uncomfortable pressure for a while and I usually have to stop eating.

Of course, your surgeon and nutritionist know you best so go with what they tell you to do. Don't be afraid to call and ask before your appointment too.

  • 2 months later...

My doctor said clear liquids first week, full liquids second week, and then pureed for two weeks.

I was on clear liquids for two weeks, now I'm on purée/soft foods... Probably til the 8th.
