PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by lavidaloca,

I'm so excited! FINALLY got my date! 11/30! Has anyone had a 1 day pre-op diet? I've heard my program only requires a pre-op diet the day before surgery and not 1 or 2 weeks but I'm not sure - I'll find out at pre-op class. Is that a thing or does that sound too good to be true? TIA! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  2. Started by Kimba Maria Wiggins,

I finally got my act together and now I'm down to 313 lbs from 350 lbs. I'm still pre op and my clothes are fitting so loose that I'm constantly pulling my pants up (thankfully not fallen down). 17 lbs of that I lost in less than one month by just simply walking and not eating out (eating homecooked meals). I do eat out a bit more often, but I don't eat a ton of junk foods like I used to and eat 3 meals a day. I feel great

  3. Started by itsallido,

So I've been doing the liquid diet for two plus weeks now... and I have to say although it hasn't really been too bad, but now I would love to have something I can chew or something crunchy.. My surgery is scheduled for 9:45 am. I'm a little anxious but can't wait to get it done and move on.... Looking forward to the day when I can move on to at least be able to have an egg and some soft cheese. I hope the second two weeks of liquid diet go quickly. Excited.... 11. Hello! A bit about me, I'm 22, I have been overweight ever since I gained consciousness. (you know how its like you wake up one day and you're 14.) So about as far as I can remember, and according to pictures, even farther back, have i been obese. I'm 5"9. and 290lbs. I have PCOS in the worst way, and my doctor said that the testosterone cells are produced by fat, which I have a large quantity of. My insurance provider is FEPblue and from what I have read, as well as talked to the insurance company on the phone, it has wonderful coverage. Last week I went to my NUT and discovered that I lost about 5 lbs since August, and almost 10 since my first visit with Surgeon on June 8. I matter-of-factly shared this news with my mom. She said she has noticed I've been watching (what I eat). Although she doesn't really want me to get the surgery (VSG) she has been the most supportive in my immediate family. However, after I shared this news, she said something like "see, you don't really need it..." I was at a loss of what to say in the moment. I KNOW it will help me. I'm very worried about regain, but I think I will actually have a chance at really losing a significant amount of weight. Sev…

Hi everyone! First time poster here. I have started the journey and I'm in the super preliminary "dipping my toes in the water" stages now. I just wanted to pick the brains of the people here. Here's a tl;dr since I ended up rambling. Diet and self-control aren't an issue for me, but I can’t lose weight. Is the sleeve right for me? Am I mentally prepared for this? Hi, how are you doing? A quick history: My whole life I have been overweight. When I graduated college, I promised myself I would get in shape. I really made a concerted effort. I changed my diet and started working out. I have been out of college for almost a decade now and while internally I'm healthy, e…

Hey everyone, I am scheduled for the sleeve surgery in December. I have been struggling for over 10 years trying to lose this weight. My highest weight was 250.. I am currently 244... I have been so excited to make this healthy change in my life. Most people around me are so negative. You're not big enough, you can do this on your own, you are to strong to give up like this, I know someone that knows someone it didn't go well... I try not to let it get to me. But as I lay here awake at 3am when I'm supposed to be asleep. I have to admit I'm very afraid and wondering if I'm doing the right thing... Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I imagine this has been asked before but I've been hunting through posts and there are so many! My insurance specifically calls out that it does not cover WLS of any kind, and my doctor's office said if that's the case then it's unlikely I'd get anywhere appealing that. So... just curious what the wait time is normally between initial appointment and actually having surgery when you don't have all the insurance hoops to jump through? I already have a bi-pap for my sleep apnea, so I doubt I'd need to go through another sleep study. I just had blood and urine run through my regular dr.s office -- I'm diabetic, high blood pressure, high cholesterol... yay! I'm h…

For those of you who have had the surgery, how quickly was a change in clothing necessary size-wise? I'm just thinking ahead about what I am going to need given the seasons changing and such. Winter coat, for example? I'm not jumping the gun, but am being realistic. I have my surgery in a month and a half and I live where it gets cold in winter. Obviously I know that it varies by person, but any experiences are helpful. Thanks!

I'm worried about my ability to give up caffeine. I have been addicted to caffeine (primarily coffee) since I was 18 and get terrible headaches if I don't have some caffeine every morning. I try to keep the amount that I drink down to three cups or so and stop by 11 am, but the fact remains that I feel horrible and am completely foggy without my morning coffee, or a Red Bull if I can't have that. I mentioned this to the nutritionist and she said that with the pain killers I would be on it would probably not be as hard, but if I'm not mistaken I'm supposed to not have any caffeine for quite awhile before and for quite awhile after the surgery. Hi all! I have had my surgery scheduled since August, but waited until November 17th so I wouldn't have to take too much time off work. Worked a long shift yesterday and stayed over to nail down a few things. It was my last workday prior to the surgery. Made a quick pitstop in the restroom on the walk out. Glanced in the mirror while washing hands and it hit me.......this is the last time you'll be here at this weight. Everything is about to change. It also registered that I was wearing a cotton polo work shirt with the company's logo. It was a 5XLT. I plan on returning to work wearing newer, smaller shirts as I'm guessing I'll be out 3-4 weeks due to related hernia repairs. The old shirt went into the trash. Awesome feeling. I had my first dietician appointment 2 weeks ago and my first psych appointment yesterday. I see both of them again in 2 weeks and they both want me to have made a lot of the dietary changes that I'll need to make post-op by then. I was doing pretty well with weighing out portions, not drinking for 30 minutes after meals, eating foods in the correct order, chewing each bite thoroughly, setting my fork down between bites, etc. for the first week after seeing the dietician. But I didn't lose a single pound that week and it just seemed pointless. So then I had a week-long food funeral, and it was pretty bad. Hi, My surgery is scheduled on Feb 26th, I'm diving in head on. I have had 2 friends with successful WLS (one sleeve and one banded). I went to my appt on the 9th and boom, scheduled for suregery on the 26th. I am a bit nervous knowing that this can unsuccessful. I want to lose 60 pounds. I am paying cash because my BMI is not high enough for any help with insurance, but with all the money i have spent to see utter failure, i hope this is worth it. Any words of encouragement will be well received. I am on my own and hoping what i am doing is right. Anyone out there with Hashi's that have had this surgery?
