PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by Cander,

Getting the sleeve on nov 30. Just wondering how long to be off work? A week? 2 weeks? A coworker had it done missed a week of work no problems did great. Another did it missed a week got a leak and wound up in the hospital for a month. I drive a forklift unloading rail road cars. Not super physical work but a lot of bouncing around and opening the doors can be tough but I can get a coworker to do that. Think a week is sufficient?

Well here I go another month of Protein shakes. Been taken them for 2 months now due to my blood sugar gets to high when I eat even when I am on meds, so I have an option to stay on what I'm doing until surgery that is on the 28th or go on insiline. It's just getting harder because I'm getting hungry, I do eat chicken when I cook it for my family. The bad thing is that I only lost 5 pounds. When I went to see the dr he said my bmi went from 38 to 36 and he wants me to loose more I don't know how good that is. But I know the knew meds I'm on makes it hard to loose. I don't know what else to do. Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App

I just scheduled my surgery for December 15th! It's been a long journey but it's finally going to happen! I have been looking into weight-loss surgery for 6 years now. I never thought I would ever be able to go through with it. My insurance always had an exclusion and I could never afford to pay cash. However, I went back to school and started a new career in the medical field. I was so excited to find out that my new insurance would pay for the procedure however I would need to have 24mo's over coverage and then 6mo of nutritional visits. It's all behind me now and December 15th is my day!

Hi, New to this. I have done all my pre op appointments and have been approved for surgery for this Friday Nov 9th. I'm on my second week of my pre op diet. First week was 2 shakes and a high Protein meal. The first week I did pretty good, only slipped one day. This week I'm on all liquids, but I ate A piece of Baked chicken breast and green Beans for lunch . I've lost 12 pounds so far. My question is will this hurt my surgery? Should I tell the doctor? Do you all think I will be okay? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I had surgery on Tuesday and all went well. I really thought I had myself prepared for this. I have felt much worse than expected. Day 2 was the worst but I'm slowly getting better. I have to keep reminding myself that what I am going through is short term and I do this by going back and reading everyone's success stories. I can see the silver lining. 6. HI, I'm about 40 days out from my surgery (booked for Dec 17th) Mexico, self pay. I'm from Alberta, Canada. I'm one of those "Type A", "always be prepared", "most organized in class", kind of person. I do my research and apply what I've learned to make decisions. So, I have my pre-op diet (I've had it for months), and have been studying it ruthlessly over the last few weeks, trying to get the right Protein powders, buying my favourite flavours of Jello, preparing my husband on how he can help me cook food, etc, and reading multiple posts here on bariatricpal.com. Getting more and more nervous/anxious/excited as the days keep trucking along. Having mini "food funerals" al…

I am excited, I got a surgery date of December 7th! Wohoo! Being that I am so happy about this, there is always pitfalls and everyone here appears to be sooo helpful, Can I join in the fun? I , as with everyone I'm sure, have a million questions but, I won't bore anyone with that babble. Thank goodness for everything you guys do. Me Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

This probably seems childish and weird to some people, but I am extremely afraid of catheters. I am in the process of exploring surgery options and talking to my doctor and I am hoping to get a sleeve. I was reading about recovery, etc on a website and it came up that they will administer a catheter for surgery... I am not at all nervous about having 80% of my stomach removed and dealing with the recovery, but the idea of getting a catheter makes me want to cancel the entire thing... When I was in labor with my daughter, I was panicking on the way to the hospital because I knew they were going to cath me. Not even worried about the fact that I was about to push a child ou…

After having my bypass surgery postponed twice, it's finally going to happen on ELECTION DAY Nov. 8, 2016! The USA may be getting a new president that day, but I am getting a new lease on life and I am so thankful. Today is day 9 on my liver shrink diet and so far, I've done well. I am pleased with the weight that I've lost so far these past few days. It's been a long road since June with numerous blood tests, x-rays, ct scans, pet scans, and biopsies, to get me well today and I thank the Lord for this. I intend to do all that I can to be as successful as I can possibly be. I just wanted to share my happy news with you, and thank you all for your encouragement …

I waited two months to get my insurance approval for surgery. First it was submitted incorrectly (new person from the clinic handling submissions, and had I not been calling my insurance pestering them, nobody would know and I would still be waiting!) Next week I'll meet with my doctor one last time, then set a surgery date. Of course, its holiday season! Trying to figure out the best time to schedule it. I really don't want to wait until December but realistically thats probably what will happen. For those who've been there, or are there, which is your favorite shake? I've been using Premier. I also like ShapeUP, but I have to add Protein to it since its a little low. …

I was approved by my insurance in October for VSG. I completed all the requirement's & this week went for pre-op testing, date all ready for dec 1st. Yesterday my surgeon call's to say the hospital submitted to the benefits office who state I have an exclusion under my employer Cigna plan. I then go ahead & call my HR who puts me over to advocate who calls the insurance ( Cigna) we are advised it is covered & they will resend the approval. I just don't know what to think ?? It seems there is an exclusion but they miss it ? Override it ? I don't even know exhausted at this point with this mess. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  17. Hi All, I just joined the site, and I'm hoping for some honest insight. I'm just shy of 50 and I'm at my heaviest ever. I thought I had "won" the battle years ago when I dropped from 250 to 180 (and even 165 for a bit) with lots of exercise and dieting. But after 10 years I couldn't keep up that level of intensity (running 40 mi/wk, gym 8+ hrs/wk, no oil/fat/sugar) -- I was willing to do it to get thin but I never expected I'd have to continue like that for the rest of my life! And when running became physically impossible (bad knees & accident) I found my weight creeping up. Frankly, I've lost hope, feeling like only an insane level of diet and exercise would…

Hi Everyone, I just got my stomach sleeved a week ago. I'm in phase one of my post-op diet, having crazy "head hunger" issues, and I thought I should do something productive instead of thinking about food I can't eat. So I'm going to explain how I got the sleeve in Osaka, Japan. This might be of interest in case you are (like me) a foreigner living in Japan, or if you are interested in how the Japanese pre-op procedures differ from those in other countries. Finding a Bariatric Surgeon (Nov, 2013) This was a hard part. If you've ever been to Japan, you've probably noticed that most Japanese people don't have significant weight issues. Obese Japanese people are very ra…

So one of the issues I have always struggled with is migraines. Since I was 8, they're heredity and not going away. As you can imagine being hungry makes this tough. So my question is am I consuming too much of my bariatric Protein shake? I'm on bari-essentials with no sugar almond milk and instead ID doing 8oz I'm doing 16. Am I making the problem worse? I'm doing 1 cup of broth once sometimes 2x a day and maybe 2 or 3 Jello cups. Everything else is Water. Oh I should mention I've already had one vomit inducing migraine and I'm taking Tylenol daily. 22. First day of pre op and of course I'm really hungry and feeling completely unmotivated to do anything. All Clear liquids and broth never tasted so good. I'm visiting family down south next week for four days. My nutritionist said I could have one meal each day while there. The other nutritionist wasn't fond of his suggestion but said ok but "just NO carbs, lean meats..." I was wondering if anyone else ate any meals right in the middle of their pre up? And if so, what were your choices ? Surgery date is 11/17 and vacation is 11/10-11/13 Any tips or suggestions or advice. Thank you!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Today is day 1 of the pre-op liquid diet. I have had fears the past few weeks about my energy feeling very low. I have been drinking less and less caffeine and have successfully switched to decaf coffee and tea and sugar free products. However, now that I am nearly through day 1 I am not feeling the best. I know this is common but is there anything anyone can suggest to do to get my mind off the hunger and the urge to stress/boredom eat? Does this get any easier?! Surgery date is 10/31.

Hi All, I am all set for my sleeve surgery on November 8th. I have mixed emotions, I am excited and also nervous. I had the band back in 2008, had my ups and downs, gained and lost, not different than i have been my entire life. Finally had it out because my body started to rejected it. At that time my doctor suggested the sleeve and I said no, I don't want another surgery, I want to so this on my own. Well, a year later and a lot heavier here I am. I am nervous, I am sure recovery will be tougher, I am almost 10 years older.. I probably read too much and definitely stress too much, from what I see on here most folks say this was the best decision of their life…

  45. Hello, My name is Brittany and I am going through the appointment process of the Sleeve surgery. I am terrified of having the sleeve and then not being able to lose weight due to the hormone replacements I'm on. I've had 9 surgeries in 8 years which has caused me to gain weight after each one. The big one was when i had to have an emergency hysterectomy 2 weeks into being 22 and they took everything (ovaries, uterus) causing me to go on hormone replacements. I gained 25 lbs just in 1 MONTH after this surgery and it has gone up from there. Has anyone had any experience with this? I just need some people to talk to and ease my mind.
