Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

I keep reading that there is extensive testing before surgery to make sure that you can have the surgery...what kind of tests? I assume blood pressure, etc...but can't find any place on line that tells me all of them. Also, I have some pretty substantial swelling in my lower legs that my doctor attributes to my weight. I take lasix for it, but it doesn't do much...is this going to be an issue for my surgery?

Sigh....I've been looking forward to the call since Wednesday to schedule my first consultation. Kept telling myself to be patient. Well, I received a call from "Unknown" and didn't answer because, well, it's Unknown! It was the clinic!! Lesson learned. I'll be answering ALL calls from now on!

Is there any reason you can't have one cup of decaf coffee a day, no sugar ,no cream ? Maybe add some Protein powder for flavor.. I'm in day 6 of the diet and holding strong, the only thing that gets to me is that one cup of coffee in the morning, I don't care if it's decaf, I drink decaf all the time before anyways Tia Sent from my SM-T330NU using the BariatricPal App

I am on my pre-op diet and it's very specific as to what I can and cannot eat as well as how much I can eat. With the holidays coming up I'm not necessarily worried about straying from my diet I'm more worried about everyone offering me food or asking why I'm not eating as much. Thanksgiving I will be spending at my sisters and the people that will be there know that I'm on a specific diet given to me by my doctor but nothing more. Christmas on the other hand had me so stressed out that I just decided not to go. Christmas is usually a big thing with my mom's side of the family so there will be a lot of extended family members there that I don't plan on sharing my surge…

Hi. Just a quick intro. I'm 33 and weigh 250. I'm 5'6". I'm desperate to lose weight. I'm a mother of 4 and my mother in law lives with us. It's been a struggle to lose weight this time around. I'm so busy I can't find time to shower most days, not to mention excercise. Also with 6 other people in the house it's not feasible to make my meals separate from everyone else's. It just doesn't work. I feel so bad about myself. Nothing fits me in my closet. I have zero energy. I can't breathe. My back and feet hurt all the time. I'm just now considering (what I call) drastic measures. I'm really not sure where to start after checking with my insurance company. I never wanted to …

I've been on pureed foods since last Thursday. I easily tolerate 1/2 c of pureed 2X a day, plus 2 Meal Replacement shakes. My problem is that I feel like I'm starving. I don't feel any kind of restriction. About an hour or so after eating/drinking an MR shake, my stomach grumbles and I feel hunger pangs. It's not acid or GERD. I need some insight. Will my hunger settle down once I am on more solid foods or am I doomed to always feel hungry? BTW, I am getting in my liquids and Protein. Hopefully I still don't have the ghrelin hormone and I'll always feel this hunger. Veterans, did any of you have these same issue early on? I am 3 weeks post op tomorrow. Thank y…

  8. Hi. As I type, I am supposed to be studying for a big exam tomorrow morning at 9 AM. Even though I graduate on 12/7, wrapping up my degree is the furthest thing on my mind right now. My surgery is scheduled for December, 12 @ 07:30 AM. My pre-op diet begins on 11/28. All I can think about is my upcoming VSG, Vitamins, discomfort, excess skin, and what-ifs. My mind keeps wandering. How does everyone focus on the now? I have finished my insurance hurdles, I have had my pre-op appointment, and I am scheduled. I know that my degree is very important, I have worked very hard, yet all of a sudden my brain has been taken over. When I turned thirty, I resigned myself to being unh…

  9. I registered years ago but never had insurance that would cover the surgery. My husband's company switched to BCBS of Alabama recently and now I have 50% coverage. I already went to the seminar and met with the surgeon. Today is the first day of my 6 month physician supervised weight loss trial. I went to a new doctor and she is wonderful. I am doing a high Protein, low carb diet. Is anyone else doing a 6 month weight loss trial? How is it going? How much weight have you lost? My doctor recommended a Protein shake and a fruit for Breakfast. The shake needs 20 to 30 grams of protein. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know about any current deals going on, coupons, places that sell bulk protein shakes for cheaper? Thanks in advance.

  17. I'm under blue cross blue shield my co-pay for my hospital stay is going to be $2,500 (I checked and checked again and this is indeed the correct amount.) I will also be paying 15% of what it takes to perform the surgery during my consultation I was told this wouldn't be more then $3,000 dollars. I have a massive pit in my stomach. I understand a copay will be expected upfront, but if I'm going to be expected to pay the rest of this upfront I'm probably not going to be able to get this for up to a year. Does anyone know if payment plans can be made in something like this? Any experience anyone can offer to help ease my mind? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal …

Anyhow, I am running a half marathon tomorrow and have always been fairly active. I have participated in many sprint and Olympic distance triathlons, savage races, etc. I currently weight 330 lbs at 5'10". Has post surgical nutrition had to change for these races? So I'm going to meet with my surgeon on Monday and from there they will call me and set a date. I started a new job in October, and will only be taking one week off, assuming that will be enough time to recover. I've read in most cases people were ready to go back to work after one week, so that's a chance I'm willing to take. My question is: Should I talk to my boss and HR about it on Tuesday once I get back from my appointment? I've decided I'm going to say it's a hernia repair regardless, due to the fact that I am a private person and would rather no one know my business. I am going to make sure my doctor fills out all required paperwork. I am also already aware tha…

So yeah, I went for my pre op with the surgeon today. I was shaking as he was talking! I realized today that this is finally real. The last seven months have flown by but at the same time prepared me for this new journey I'm headed for. Got all my scripts at the pharmacy, of course they had to order the liquid pain medication but that's ok it'll be there Monday. Got all my instructions for Sunday night. Going to spend the weekend getting all my stuff in order and preparing and measuring out all my liquids. I will be on full liquids when I get home so that'll be a treat after all the broth and Jello I've had! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  45. How long did your actual RNY/bypass take? And was anyone's surgeon unable to do your surgery laproscopically? My surgeon said at my pre op appt last week that my body type (short & fat) was the most difficult to operate on and sometimes (but not often) they find they can't do it laproscopically once they begin.
