This probably seems childish and weird to some people, but I am extremely afraid of catheters. I am in the process of exploring surgery options and talking to my doctor and I am hoping to get a sleeve. I was reading about recovery, etc on a website and it came up that they will administer a catheter for surgery... I am not at all nervous about having 80% of my stomach removed and dealing with the recovery, but the idea of getting a catheter makes me want to cancel the entire thing... When I was in labor with my daughter, I was panicking on the way to the hospital because I knew they were going to cath me. Not even worried about the fact that I was about to push a child out of my lady parts or have a needle shoved in my back... worrying about the catheter. Luckily when I got there they told me they'd do it after I got my epidural so I wouldn't feel it (Thank God!). Do you think my doctor would do the catheter after they put me to sleep for the surgery?

I don't remember if I had a catheter but when I asked my surgeon I remember him saying they don't put it in till after you are sleep. So if I had one I don't even know about it lol. It was taken out before I woke up.

When I had mine taken out after my c section that part wasn't so bad... I'm just pretty nervous about the putting it in part

no cath when i was sleeved

had a couple during other operations

it was put in after i was asleep

but in my case, it was taken out in my room PO

didn't hurt, just felt a little weird/awkward

please don't be scared/upset

I have the same fear. I discussed this with my surgeon and promised him I would get out of bed and use the bathroom. He agreed and didn't use a catheter. I got up about 1 hour after getting back to my room without difficulty. Talk to your surgeon about your fear, he/she will work with you.

@@SuperJenn529, you do such a good job of torturing yourself. Ten points.

It is SOP to insert a catheter after a patient is out cold if, in fact, the patient will be out cold and if, in fact, he's to be catheterized. It's okay...I'm not at all suggesting you give up the thrill of screeching insistence that, if a cath is to be used, it be inserted only after you're out. You also have the right to make it known that you'd rather not have a catheter at all. It's my guess that you have the right to refuse a cath and that you're willing to live with the consequences that may arise during or after surgery.

Nurse here - usually if they're doing it for a surgery, they place it in the OR after you're asleep.

If I had one, they took it out before I woke up. Each doc is different, lots of them aren't placing catheters for surgery anymore due to higher infection risks. Check with your doc, at the very least they should be able to place it after you're out.

No catheter...of course i was npo after midnight and use the restroom before surgery for a pregnancy test and surgery was only and hour and they walked me to the restroom when I woke up in recovery

I did not have one but, do to the anesthesia I was not producing very much urine. The eventually did an Eco of my bladder and said if I do not go soon they would need to cath me. That was all the incentive I needed.LOL

I had one for my surgery, but the only reason I know that is because I asked. It was placed and removed while I was out.

It makes me feel reassured that I can probably just discuss my fears with the doctor and possibly avoid it all together, if not having it done when I'm out. When I had my c-section, I ran a fever a few different times the weeks following and they constantly thought it was a UTI and they were CONSTANTLY trying to cath me to get a "clean" urine sample to test. I refused every time, but they were really pushy about it.

I wasn't catheterized. They threatened if I didn't pee but I sat on a commode in the recovery room forcing myself to pee!

I wasn't Catheterized for WLS. But with other surgeries they did it after epidural or anesthesia. I have only felt it once during a test from a urologist. Ouch! I fear the thought too!

I didn't have one either. Like a PP they told me after surgery that if I didn't pee soon they'd put one in. Then I sat on the toilet for a couple hours falling asleep and waking up until I went, lol.

Many surgeons don't use them and the ones that do put them in when you are asleep

I have the same fear. Too many bad experiences with catheters. When I was in the hospital for blood clots, I had several catheters put in during a month long stay. One, they forgot to inflate the balloon and it came right out and they had to put in a new one. When I had my second child, the put the catheter in after I was on the table and couldn't feel anything. I was so happy about that. Not too happy that two men were hanging out by my lady bits. Haha. During my third pregnancy, I was having contractions and went to the er. While in my little room, I could hear the ladies at the Nurse's station saying that they didn't meet their quota of catheters. I didn't even know that was a thing. I had gotten up to go to the restroom once, but when I had to get up again, the nurse said they HAD to put in a catheter so that I could be monitored better. I hated being lied to. Then at the csection, they put the catheter in beforehand when I could still feel it.

I need to ask my doctor if I'll have to have one. I sure hope not. It is one of my biggest worries about surgery too.
