Single Mom of 2 – Starting my journey at 400+ lbs

Hi everyone,

I’m a single mom of two, and I’m finally taking the step to get weight loss surgery. To be honest, I’ve felt a bit embarrassed to post this, but my starting weight is over 400 lbs. I know I need a tool to help me change my life, not just for me, but for my kids.

My "why" is pretty simple: I want to be the mom they deserve. Right now, it’s hard to keep up with them. I want to be able to get out on the basketball court and actually play with them, instead of just watching from the sidelines. I want to be able to cheer for them (and my Boston teams!) without feeling exhausted and in pain.

Being a single parent is a lot of work, and I know the recovery and the lifestyle change will be a challenge, but I’m doing this so I can be around for a long time to see my kids grow up.

I’m currently pre-op and feeling a mix of nerves and hope. If there are any other single parents or "heavy hitters" who started over 400 lbs, I’d love to hear your story. It’s a little scary, but I’m ready.

Welcome!

I’m a mom of three and I chose surgery when my insurance decided that nobody really needs weight loss meds, and at that point I had lost about 35 pounds with the help of GLP-1’s. I’m not a single mom or a ‘heavy hitter’ as you say but my weight had been an ongoing issue in my life, I would lose and then I would gain it (I had lost 50 pounds after having each of my older kids only to get pregnant again) and after my third child, I never saw my pre-pregnancy weight again and she will be 13 this May. Like you, I have a lot coming down the pike with my kids that I need to be in front row for. My mom didn’t make it out of her 40’s (she was diagnosed with cancer when I was a teenager) and all of my adult milestones were celebrated without her and my life has suffered for it. Here I was at 42, bigger than she ever was and I have three kids which means 3 times the graduations, 3 times the weddings (if they want that!), 3 times everything and I need to be there for all of that.

I had VSG on September 4, 2025. The first couple weeks were a little rough but nothing I couldn’t handle. Today, I am down 60 pounds and I recently got back into my childhood hobby of figure skating which I never in my wildest dreams ever thought would be possible. Honestly, given the opportunity to do it again, I would a million times over.

Hey there!

I'm not a mom but I was close to 400 when I started my journey. Its been a lot of work but I truly believe I didn't gain it overnight. I knew this was a multiple year commitment for me. And it has been. I'm not the perfect patient. I break lots of rules. I eat anything I want in moderation. But I also have used every tool I can to get where I am. Surgery was my first BIG tool. But that will only get you so far for so long. Lots of people go backwards after a certain point. I had almost a solid year with no weight loss and I decided to add in a glp-1. Best decision I've ever made next to the surgery itself. Good Luck!!

Hi!! I was 421 pounds when I began this journey. I'm a mom and a grandma, and I know the seriousness and importance of this decision. Personally, it's the best decision I've ever made, and I'm thankful everyday that I did it. I tend to watch what I eat more than I did before the surgery, but honestly, I can still have what I want as long as I'm really careful about it.
