My genetic makeup is somewhat like Heinz 57 ketchup, but a significant portion of it is Pennsylvania German. As such, tonight we will be eating the traditional PA German dinner of "Seifleisch, grumbiere, un sauergraut fur esse". That translates into pork, mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut for dinner for you non Pennsylvania Germans. This being my first Bariatric New Year, there will be mostly pork loin on my plate, with a little bit of sauerkraut, and just a speck of mashed potatoes. It is a traditional meal for New Year's Day. It is steeped in superstition, but we ignore that and eat it because it tastes good. ???? It is also relatively easy to make, and pork loin i…

I think this is "Goodbye Protein bars!" We'll see, but I can say at the least they are going to be showing up a lot less around here. I made my first batch of beef Jerky today. Actually, it was my second batch. The first batch - well, we don't talk about that. Let's just say that my normally well functioning smoker turned into a crematorium that day. Anyway. I did some looking around on the interweb, and found a list of recipes to try. After that it was just a matter of assembling the ingredients, disassembling a beef roast with a freshly sharpened carving knife, and as our oldest daughter used to say, "Walla!" This stuff is great! It tastes way bette…

It got the name Ring of Fire because it burns on the way in, and it burns on the way out. There is nothing really special about this chili, although there are two things of note about it. First, it is very easy to make, and second, it has been featured at all sorts of social occasions and we virtually never bring home any leftovers. I am posting it here in case someone is bored and wants to try it. It is not cheap in the calorie department, but a half a cup yields lots of Protein. In fact, you will get 275 calories and a hair over 25 grams of protein in 1/2 cup. These values were calculated with My Fitness Pal's recipe calculator. Just about anything in this rec…

I just saw this on Pinterest. I like that it is small portions versus making a whole pizza. I plan to give this a try in the next couple of weeks. LOW CARB PIZZA chips RECIPE: Ingredients: 20 slices pepperoni or salami (turkey pepperoni) 1 ½ to 2 sticks light mozzarella string cheese, sliced ⅓ cup Pomi pizza sauce, or use my homemade sauce recipe towards the bottom of the post Directions: Preheat oven to 400 F (200 C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Place pepperoni slices on the lined baking sheet, and place a mozzarella string cheese slice on the center of each pepperoni. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or more until cheese starts to brown …

For Thanksgiving I made two different dressings. I made one with cubed wheat and white bread and one breadfree using garbanzo Beans. In both I used onion, apples, red and green peppers, hot Italian and sage sausage, broth and seasonings. Both versions turned out great. Hubby and guests loved the traditional dressing and I enjoyed the low carb flavorful breadless dressing with leftovers for lunch or dinner. Had lapband surgery 10/12/16

I found this recipe on Pinterest. I haven't made it yet. Low-Carb Deconstructed pizza Casserole (Makes 6 servings; recipe created by Kalyn) Ingredients: 1 can (14.5 oz.) diced tomatoes (do not use petite dice) 5 links (19.5 oz.) uncooked turkey Italian sausage (I used my favorite turkey Italian sausage; use hot or sweet, whichever you prefer.) 2 tsp. + 2 tsp. olive oil 1/2 tsp. dried oregano salt and fresh-ground pepper to taste (I didn't use much salt.) 8-12 oz. fresh mushrooms, washed and cut into thick slices 1 1/2 cups grated Mozzarella cheese (part-skim or low fat mozzarella) 15 slices pepperoni, cut in half (turkey pepperoni if you prefer) Instruct…

So I had 3 bananas that were about to go bad so started looking ways up to use them - here's what I came up with. 3 bananas, mashed 1 cup Peanut Butter (i use natural, just peanuts and salt) 1 cup oats 2 scoops unflavored Protein Mix and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. It comes out to 80 calories and 6g of protein per cookie. I can only eat 1. Yum!

Hi everyone. I'm almost a month post sleeve and have found a couple recipes for chicken I really enjoy. 1) Huli Huli Chicken (Hawaiian), the healthy way: Mix together in a bowl make the marinade: 1/3 cup sugar free peach or apricot preserves 1/3 cup low sugar ketchup 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce 1/4 cup sherry 1 tsp minced garlic 1tsp minced or grated ginger Remove the skin from 4-6 chicken bone-in thighs. Put the skinless thighs in a large ziplock bag along with most of the above marinade. Reserve a bit for basting. Put in the fridge for 1-4 hours. Heat oven to 375. I am super busy this time of year (as is everyone) with school activities and my business, and the shorter days seem to really make me feel the crunch. Plus, the chillier it gets, the more I want to snuggle on the couch with my pup and a trashy novel. My family still wants to eat, so it's time to pull out the crock pot! The more elaborate the meal, the more prep I do at night. Today's recipe is seriously an open and dump but a family favorite: 3-4 chicken breasts 2 cans pinto Beans rinsed 1 jar of your favorite salsa 1 can of Rotel 1 can of corn drained. Dump it all in and cook on low 8-10 hours. Shred chicken with two forks. Serve with chopped onion, sou…

I love this so much that I had to share! CAUTION: I tolerate this snack very well as my before-bed snack, but I'm also right about at goal weight. I wouldn't recommend this treat until you're near or at your goal as it could be a trigger food for you if you love Peanut Butter. But, if you're on the regular food phase, can keep it to 2 and it adds something wonderful after you've eaten your daily requirement of Protein, then ENJOY! Hi! When I search Protein shake, I see a lot of brands just foe powders or pre-made. I'm trying to do a protein "smoothie" of sorts for Breakfast. What are your best recipes? A lot of what I find online is 400 calories and the protein is sometime only like 12 grams. If there's another thread I couldn't find in searching, please let me know and I'll just go read that one.

We fired up the smoker today and have a little bit of fun with pork and salmon. The first thing I did was this pork loin. It is a real simple apple wood smoke and I drizzled it with about a quarter of a cup of honey. Next up salmon smoking time! This is a very simple brine of brown sugar and salt. Once again they were smoked with apple wood and honey. This one is my brother-in-law's. As you can see it isn't a pretty chrome color and the flesh reflects that. My beautiful wife caught this one! Beautiful coloring means beautiful meat!

I recently bought a bunch of whey Protein crunchies and have been having fun coming up with ways to use them. One of my favorites has been to make my own high-protein "granola" out of them. I sprinkle it over greek yogurt, or sometimes just pour a little milk over it and have ti like Cereal. My recipe always changes based on what I have available at home, but I just made a batch that I really liked so thought I would share it with you all. Protein Granola 100 grams whey crunchies 14 grams cacao nibs 15 grams unsweetened coconut flakes 56 grams almonds, chopped roughly 1/2 cup dried unsweetened cranberries (I make my own using frozen whole cranberries. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass surgery. Before surgery, I really loved food and it was difficult after surgery. Because post-op I really hated food. But now that I am 3 years post-op, my tastes have begun to return. So my wife made me "Sausage and Apple Stuffed Shishigatani Squash" and it was magnificent. She used a recipe for Sausage and Apple Stuffed Acorn Squash substituting Shishigatani for Acorn Squash. pumpkin which was developed in the Bunka era of the Edo period (1804-1818) by Japanese monks. This is one of the rarest and most historic varieties. The fruit is ribbed, warty and uniquely shaped: like a bottle gourd. They are dark green, turning to…

Hi guys, Does anyone have any fab and easy snack ideas for me to have when I've got a few friends round to watch the Olympic Opening ceremony? I won't be making a habit of having Snacks in front of the telly but it's kind of a special occasion. My riends who are non-sleevers will be having the usually sort of thing - wine, chips, pizza etc. I'm 6 weeks out of surgery and can eat most things now. Any ideas would be most welcome! I made a delicious miso glazed black cod from the nobu recipe on the web. I marinated overnight in just some low sodium soy and miso. And ginger. Full disclosure, this is a Bobby Flay recipe, but I wanted to post it here because it has helped me tremendously...and it's just delicious. I love coleslaw, but eating traditional coleslaw with mayonnaise has been difficult as the mayo is a bit "heavy" for me. If I were eating coleslaw as a primary meal it would be fine, but using it as a side dish has been tough because 1 or 2 bites of traditional coleslaw and I'm done. I saw this and figured I would give it a try and it's been great. It's a bit lighter tasting and goes well with just about anything. Cabbage is such a healing vegetable IMO and I like to eat as much as I can and this is a great way to do that. ING…

I love eating fish, because it is low in calories and high in Protein, but cooking it with variety can be tough. Fish of your choice, I use Swai or Cod Seasoning of your choice - I use Flavor God Garlic Lemon Oil of your choice - I use an Avocado oil spray Cast Iron skillet - it needs to be cast iron or able to withstand high heat Electric grill Place your skillet on the grill, and heat the grill to at least 550, 600 is better. While the grill is heating weigh and season your fish. I find that even portion controlled pieces of fish vary in weight. Once the grill is hot, spray or carefully pour your oil in the skillet. I find that I can get away with one short spr…

So I adapted a couple of recipes to come up with this, but you can adjust however you want based on your stage/needs and of course, taste! This is great to make in a large batch and freeze some for ready-to-go meals on busy weeknights. However, if you have 2 teenage boys at home like I do, having anything leftover might be difficult My wife thought that this was one of the best Soups she's had, and she's not typically a Soup lover so I took that as genuine! I did make the taco seasoning homemade, as well as the enchilada sauce, but feel free to sub store-bought if you don't want to make them or don't have the time. ** NOTE - The picture shows corn in the soup, but…

Had one of the freshest, and best tasting salads I think I've ever had yesterday, and figured I would share it. Found it on Green Valley Kitchen and it was amazing, and really inexpensive. Avocado is one of my favorite foods, but post-op it's hard to use an entire avocado before it turns brown so make sure you have others to share this with as you probably can't eat the whole thing... Ingredients 1 1/2 cups of cherry tomatoes, halved 1 medium cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced 1 small-medium avocado, diced 1 handful of fresh Italian parsley, minced 4 oz of feta cheese (I use the fat free Athenos brand) 2 tbsp minced red onion 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 t…

I used to eat this pretty regularly during my losing phase - chicken salad on a bed of lettuce or with sliced tomatoes. I had a great healthy recipe but can't find it. I have made it from memory - not likely remembering it all! - chicken (cans from costco surprisingly good) - Greek yogurt, plain - diced apple - curry powder which gives it a slight yellowish look but adds to flavor Do you have a good and healthy version you like? Heard someone mention Ceviche the other day. I haven't made it in quite a while and I got a craving. Did some checking first and realized it's a great high Protein / low carb dish. For a 1cup serving, it has 31g Protein, 11g Carbs, and 257 calories. Cerviche is a dish made around the world, with slightly different ingredients. White fish, shrimp, and other seafood is cooked by citric acid from lemons and limes, and then combined with other vegetables. It can be used as a topping to chips, salads, or eaten alone as a side dish or main meal. Made with hot peppers, it has a nice spicy bite. I have tried recipes for Protein pancakes / waffles (even from Eggface website) and just never really found something I liked. I have never eaten pancakes or waffles very often, but now that I am eating Breakfast at home instead of drive through fast food I wanted to try real breakfast food occasionally. Anyway, I found this package mix at Target - http://birchbenders.com/shop/protein/. They are really pretty good! I actually make mine in to waffle sticks (with a Baby Cakes waffle maker). I use sugar free maple syrup and a couple of slices of bacon. Not something I would eat every day but nice for a change. Just thought I would share....

Happy Eatster everyone! I might be sick, but I was determined to cook on Pants-Free Friday, sorry Good Friday. In breaking with my old tradition of Steak Diane on GF, I went for a far healthier option of Haddock and Broccoli Pie, inspired by this month's Donna Hay magazine. I live in Idaho and it's frickin cold, especially now that I have no insulation. Besides coffee and tea, I love hot cocoa to help keep warm. But unfortunately all "bariatric" hot cocoa products I've found 1) have artificial sweeteners (which I hate) and 2) contain Calcium caseinate which is a lower quality, not readily absorbed form of Protein. I much prefer whey isolate. So I came up with my own recipe.... 1/2 cup Hershey's cocoa 1/4 cup Stevia in the Raw 2 scoops Syntrax nectar Natural vanilla 1 cup nonfat dry milk I keep it in a tupperware in my cupboard and Just stir into hot Water to taste. This recipe makes for a slightly under sweetened hot cocoa. I do…
