Figuring out the new post-surgery normal takes some detective work and trial and error. I learned something new about myself over the past two days about the cause of the nausea I was experiencing. I never believed that the nausea was actually my body screaming for food because I don't get the classic hunger pangs and I know that I am well-hydrated as I carefully track the amount of liquid I drink. So, I upped my caloric intake to 1200 and started eating more frequently, like every two hours. Miraculously, the nausea has dissipated quite a bit. I am also making certain to get in 2-3 servings of fresh fruit and that has helped as well. Over the past two days, when I weigh…

Had my bypass done in dec 16. I have done awesome! I quit everything I was supposed to. I take my vitamins and drink my protein. 130 is my ideal weight and I had stayed there for several months. I had an ulcer and didn't know it so I spent a week in the hospital in Feb. I left the hospital at 127. Took me March and April to get back to 130 (I wasn't trying to gain I was just ok with it). I have struggled a bit with alcohol so I cut it out completely. And gain 3 lbs in a week!!! I'm sad, what am I going to do now that I'm really healthy, no ulcer, no alcohol, I gain??!!! I know that foods gave snuck back in and my brain knows what I need to do but why does it have to be s…

Hi, So I had my lapband put in around 2007 lost about 60lbs. 230 to 170 but it started giving me problems about a year in and had all fluid drained recently because I couldn’t take it anymore so gained all of it back currently at 225. Going for gastric bypass with insurance this time I’m on month 5 of a 6 month diet I have BCBS anyone get denied with them after requirements met? I’m freaking out a bit because I can’t let this fail me too, I just can’t go through feeling like a failure again the way my family looked at me when the lapband failed and I was fat again ugh it’s the worst. I also have 2 weddings I’m in in September that I have to order dresses for this mon…

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum, so I wanted to introduce myself. You can call me Neri. I'm a 26-year-old female from Pennsylvania. I've had issues with my weight since I was young, mainly due to PCOS and a few other issues. Really, I've been trying to lose weight since middle school. I feel like I tried everything! Atkins, Weight Watchers, counting calories, Nutrisystem, etc. I actually made my decision to have a bypass and started on the journey two years ago. However, between losing trust in my surgeon, changes in my insurance, and general life putting everything on hold, I ended up stopping. Now that everything is settled, I found a new surgeon and am looki…

Hi my name is Kristina I am from Boston Massachusetts, I have been reading a lot of stories on here but never posted! Here goes nothing, I am 30 years old and have battled with obesity since I was a young girl (it runs in the family) I don’t have any other health issues besides PCOS! I have a one year old daughter who now since having her I realize how much I can hardly move to keep up with her and get up and down from the floor etc.. I started the weight loss program in February and now have a surgery date for May 30th! Excited is an understatement then comes the nerves. I have seen so many of your success stories on here and I am beyond proud of each and everyone of you…

Hello all! I have been reading from this website for months now and tonight I decided to join in. I have my RNY surgery planned in about 3 weeks and i'm a ball of nerves... Almost to the point of delaying my surgery. I haven't cancelled it but man this is tough.... I have been on a food tour for the past 2 weeks since my surgery date was planned, "I won't be able to eat this for awhile" is what i'm telling myself. I guess need a little support before I start my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. Please help a newbie!!!

I would love to hear everyone little tricks and tips. I drink the ready to drink premier protein shakes but I add 1 cup fair life fat free milk. Helps thin out the shakes so not so thick (for those that don’t like them) I don’t mind the shakes but enjoy the extra fluid and the protein boost (43 grams).

Hey Everyone, Just wondering if anyone has or is going through the same thing as me. I was bypassed on 4/23 and yet I'm still in pain. Mainly it's my lower abdomen (slightly above my belly button and down) it prevents me from doing more walking and I even walk up in the middle of the night, multiple times because of it. I do still have pain killers that I could take, but I just stick to regular Tylenol. I hate that I'm over a week out and I still feel bad. Healing has sucked so far, but every day it gets better. Besides this. I feel like this awful cramping feeling will never go away! I'll be reaching out to my surgeon soon about it, but just wanted to see if…

I’m having gastric bypass on May 21, my pre-op appointment is on May 3rd. I had all my pre-op blood work done, ekg, and a cardiologist cleared me for surgery. What can I expect to happen at my surgeons pre-op visit? Any advice to help me survive the pre-op liquid diet? I’m so happy to be taking this journey to changing my life for the better.

Help! I'm five days post-op and have had terrible dumping. Yesterday and today I omitted my clear whey Protein, and no problem. But now what should I do for protein? I went to the health food store today and all clear liquid has whey in it. I'm four days out from full liquid. I"ve contacted my Dr. office and am waiting for a reply from them. Has anyone used a Protein Powder this early on and just watered it down a lot? I don't want to hurt my pouch. Since I stopped the whey yesterday I've felt so much better. No dumping, and no horrible gas pains. I'm still sore, but able to walk just fine. All in all, I'm happy with my recovery. Any advice you could give will…

I went on January 16 for gastric bypass. I woke up about an hour after being put under to a nurse in the recovery area telling me they did not complete my surgery because of complications. I have multiple adhesions and my intestines are stuck together so much that my anatomy does not look like it should. My surgeon did not want to complete the surgery until I could be told. He has given me the option to have him do a sleeve or for him to refer me out to someone who still does open bypass surgery. I cannot explain the mind f**k this was and the anxiety I am feeling. This is terrible. I knew something was going to happen or be found. I knew that I was right. Something was …

So, tomorrow I drive from Fairbanks Alaska to Anchorage. 400 miles...I have most things packed and just have a few that must wait until morning. Its hard not to climb the walls, knowing I'll have to get things in the car and head out early in the morning. i hope I can sleep; I'm more concerned about getting TO surgery than I am about the surgery itself. Not sure what I wanted from this post, except to say I'm restless and I hope the drive is good. At least there's some pretty scenery.

Has anyone experienced this post surgery? I could literally care less about eating most of the time. Eating is literally a job. I scrunch my nose at most things. Am I just a bad cook? I am 1.5 yrs out from RNY and 160 lbs. down. I am 51 years old and feel like I have the energy of a 20 year old. Truly, I have never felt better in my life. With one exception - back pain which is due to excess skin. BariatricPal surgeon and plastic surgeon and Orthopedic doctor all agree that it is time for a lower body lift to remove the excess skin. I am wondering if anyone who had a RNY also had a lower body lift and, if so, can they share their experience with me. My surgery is scheduled for 1 week away from today.

Hi, I have just joined these forums and this is my first time posting, I hope I don;t do anything wrong! On 14th May 2014 I was given a Sleeve by Dr Mannur at Homerton Hospital, London, UK. Prior to the pre op diet I weighed 34 Stone 4lb at the age of 25 and things were desperate, I was hugely struggling with day to day life. I followed the 'Milk Diet' for 31 days and on the day of Surgery I weighed exactly 31 stone. I had great success with the sleeve and before too long I weighed 21 stone 4 lb and I was happy. I went away to America on a holiday and over indulged on the bad things. I thought it was ok as I would get back into the swing of things when I go…

So I read everyday on this site. 90% of what I read is negative, for most people things are going to be ok. I had major hernia surgery the same time I had my by pass surgery. I had to stay in the hospital five days. So my struggles are maybe not the same as others but I do have them. I feel great, I’m able to walk everyday, get all my required protein and water down each day. Everyday seems better for me. I feel my life is under control and moving in a positive direction. Life is not always fair, but when your given a second chance, you better grab hold and fight like hell to overcome your obstacles.

I had RNY on March 29th, I was discharged 2 days later and felt “ok” besides pain and nausea. 2 weeks went by and I had not had a bowel movement and wasn’t even near meeting my fluid goals. I had been in twice for IV fluids. The day after I got graduated to soft foods I ate an egg and it stayed down but I was uncomfortable after. The next day I had an egg for breakfast and tried 4 small grilled shrimp for dinner. I fell asleep after dinner and woke up around midnight feeling that the shrimp hadn’t moved at all and were just sitting there and felt very sick. I ended up throwing up the contents of my pouch and calling the advice nurse. She talked to a surgeon on call and he…

Anyone getting bypass in the Dallas area?!

Well as you may or may not know my surgery on April 9th did not go as planned. Opened me up and closed me up almost as fast. Found a fatty mass but doc didn’t know what it was so he was hesitant to continue. Long story short, between the treatment from the staff at hospital to the treatment I’ve since received from the surgeon, my PCP is asking me to move on to a diff hospital and program. She’s appealing my insurance to get me into her hospital. Hoping it works. I’m tired of waiting. Ready to finally get this done and begin new journey. Feels like I’m in limbo.

Ugh... So, last week, I had my last few appointments, was signed off by psych, dietitian and the surgeon. Received an email on Saturday that my primary insurance has approved me for surgery but have not heard back from the surgeon's office yet. I both emailed last Friday and called this past Monday and have not heard back yet. I really don't want to be a pain in the a** and keep bugging them but I really need to get this surgery scheduled as soon as possible. There are only a couple of days in May that would work for me and the surgeon only does surgeries on Tuesdays. Can't take off of work at all in June as the other night nurse that works opposite of me is on vacation t…

I am 5 years post gastric bypass surgery, but I’ve had complications with my back. I recently had my 3rd lumbar fusion approximately 8 weeks ago. I was told by my surgeon it was very important not to gain weight as this will put pressure on my back and worsen my pain. Well I’ve found that very difficult to do. My pain is so severe after this surgery I am afraid to move. I try walking but I can only walk max 1 block due to severe nerve damage pain to both my legs. I have also been depressed because I was told I could never go back to my job (I’m a dialysis nurse) due to the repetitive strain n pressure. I’m an emotional eater. I have gained 10-15 lbs since my surgery on 12…

I had gastric bypass recently on April 18th. I went to my follow up with my surgeon. Everything went well and I was advanced to pureed phase. I thought I understood all of the directions for this phase but now that I'm home I seem to be drawing a blank. I know that I'm suppose to eat the protein portion of the meal first. Protein portion anywhere from 2 tablespoons-1/4cup according to my surgeons directions. My question is how do I add in pureed fruits and veggies? What size portions? How much should I be eating total each meal for protein, fruits, veggies? I've only been able to eat my protein portion and no room for anything else. I'll call my surgeons office tomorrow…

Hi everyone, I am in the process of being approved for gastric bypass. I was recently told that certain meds will be off-limits for me after the surgery. I suffer from chronic migraine and I get botox injections to stop them. I have tried every preventative out there and none seem to work. I use Imitrex injectible as soon as I get a migraine, but, many times it does not work. My current rescue med is Cambia. I havn't spoken to my Headache Specialist yet, but, what do any of you take that suffer from Chronic Migraine.

I am feeling very emotional about the thought of what things will be like after I have my surgery. I don’t want my wife to suffer and be unhappy because she is hungry and just trying to be supportive. We enjoy our sitting down and having breakfast and lunch together. Most of the time we meet somewhere out to eat. I feel like we may lose something together that we like. I hope that we can still do this and she can eat her meal and hopefully I can just have a little and be content. It is the social part and just spending the time together that I am concerned about losing. I don’t want her to be unhappy.
