Hi, All! I am 4 weeks post-op and my doctor has removed the 25 lbs lifting restriction! I am super excited. I am ready to run a marathon. OK, just kidding. However, I do have the problem of thinking I can still exercise like I did when I was in the military over 20 years ago. I want to jump into cross-fit or rock climbing or whatever. I do walk my dog twice a day, for at least a mile. We have to avoid the smaller dogs he wants to eat. My neighbours would be most upset if their pets wound up as his meal. What did you start with for exercising? (Apparently, I decided it would be a good time to move during recovery.....does that count as exercis…

Hey y'all, So, before I started the wls journey I'd continuously been on my own weight loss journey so for the last 3.5 years. My diet has been fairly restrictive for several years. Eating what I wanted but never at the portions I wanted them. (I'd have one slice of pizza for dinner when I wanted 3.4. IDK. I was HUNGRY.) Which I thought would help... Wrong. Yeah, the only time I actually had successful weight loss was when I moved out of country and really couldn't afford food. Broke grad student life. Like really, I was broke. I lost about 80 pounds. I loved it but was not satisfied, I still had another 60 plus left to lose. In hindsight, I had really lost …

When life gives you a bag of lemons, grab your Splenda and make some Lemonade. Since I'm down for the count with this pesky ulcer, there's no time like the present to dust off an old hobby of mine, Amateur Radio. I last worked with it almost 7 years ago. I am an FCC licensed General Class HAM radio operator. For anyone that cares, my call sign is KF7SVX. It's time for me to upgrade my license to Extra Class! I spent the past few days on marathon study sessions, despite feeling ill. This is something I've wanted to do for some time as the Extra is the unrestricted license which lets you use all amateur bands. It's very hard and the last time I studied for an exam was 7 yea…

I've read about these cos my surgeon thinks I may have one. He's asked my GP to do a referral for an urgent laparoscopy. I saw her yesterday apparently today there's a note on my file 'reminding' her to do it. I'm terrified: I can't eat or without pain. Have had two half cups of soup today and two cups of tea. Had a tiny glass of frozen fruit smoothie and have gas, distended stomach and crampy pain again. Not sure which food is causing it as there seems to be a lag. Anyway. Just don't know what to do. Can't go to work as in too much pain/discomfort. Want to ring gp and tell her to look up Petersen's hernias as apparently they often present with intermittent symp…

A dream come true? Yes. Grateful? Absolutely. It's all becoming very real as I get my surgery date tomorrow. Yay!!! But now the "nevers" are creeping in. I had my first experience with the "nevers" over the weekend when I thought about the things that I enjoy that I might never enjoy again. A NY slice (NYers will understand the pain), bagels, Ben & Jerry's, real coffee, (don't even mention decaf) and the list goes on and on. Now don't get me wrong, I started the post with what a dream this is and how grateful I am. I realize that this is a life-changing journey. The rewards of that journey far outweigh the temporary gratification of my "never" food choices. So …

Well yesterday was my one-year anniversary since bypass surgery. Like everyone, we all have a unique journey. I have lost about 159 pounds and went from a size 22 to a size 8 or 10. Here is my journey, which includes ulcers, cancer, kidney stones, malnutrition-induced neuropathy, and stenosis. Fun, huh? I'm really happy with my results, but I have a LONG way to go to get healthy. My journey and situation is NOT typical, so for those of you considering surgery, please just know this is one story out of many, but you won't face this same situation. Surgery - May 8, 2017. Successful! 10 days later - blood in stool. Had a large ulcer (not uncommon) and spent 4 m…

So, today is my 2 weeks post op. I am feeling absolutely amazing! I had a little pain and discomfort for about the 1st three days, but on day four i was even sleeping on my side and stomach. I have lost 25 lbs so far....and can kind of tell in my shirts. Ill probably have to lose about 50 before i can really tell since i was so heavy to begin with. I am concerned that i am able to eat too much. At first was was literally only able to eat two spoons of broth. But as i progressed to soft foods, i have found that eating slowly, i am able to eat about 1/2 to 1 full cup of food before i can tell that i am full. My surgeon said that its because my stomach and brain arnt c…

The pain in my back and hips is gone. I am starting to get my energy back. My clothes are almost starting to get to big. So many good things to report, it certainly outweighs the bad. Speaking of bad, I went a week without laxatives and ended up with constipation so bad, giving birth was easier. I still have a hard time eating solids without feeling sick. I Thought I was drinking enough fluids but I guess I wasn't. I kept getting really dizzy and almost passed out a few times. I figure low fluids equal low blood pressure. I increased my fluids and I am doing fine now. I am getting used it crunching down 4 vitamins a day. Not always easy to remember. Every morning I put fo…

So I had my bypass on 4.18 and was planning on returning a week later. Since going home recovery was much more difficult than anticipated and I have a large hard area that is all red where they inserted the staple guns etc. I wish I trusted my gut earlier this week. I’ve been struggling sit to stand, lay to sit, in excruciating pain where I cry every time I get up. Turns out, it wasn’t the gas. And it’s not just scar tissue like the doctors office kept telling me (they also refused to see me for a post op I’ve tried multiple times this week and they kept telling me my symptoms were normal). Tonight the nurse finally called me back and said I should go to my pcp for a post…

Today I have a follow-up with my program's nurse practitioner. If it wasn't for my hospitalization last week, it would've been a fairly clean follow-up. My surgeon wanted me to keep this appointment. I was really hoping to be able to begin weight lifting again. I might ask the NP if she could clear me for weight lifting even though the answer will probably be no. They say it never hurts to ask, so I will. I am concerned about losing muscle mass and I need to strength train my legs or cardiovascular progress won't happen. Perhaps I will be allowed to do something like the inclined leg press. This would be good enough.

Hello!! Had my EGD on Tuesday my doctor said my hernia was huge and also prescribed me acid reflx medication. She didn't tell me much more and said she's talk more about it at my next appointment. Now I'm thinking which should be adressed first, my haital hernia, gallbladder(so I don't get kidney stones) or my reflux issues? Do I have an ulcer what else did she see and how serious is it?? I am now at 1 year 5 months after my Gastric Bypass. This journey wasn't easy but I have been at my goal weight 150lbs now for over 5 months (highest weight 287). I'm getting insurance approval for my panniculectomy and breast reconstruction. Then my journey will be complete. I feel amazing!! Still experimenting with most foods and never afraid to try new foods all the time. Posted are my before & after pics. Insurance DOES pay for Panniculetomy & reconstruction breast LIFT (not augmentation) so I am very happy about that!! I didn't read or follow all the diets online. I knew my body and paid attention to how i felt and made my own diets. First 4 months after surg…

OK, Im a little over 4 weeks post op Im down around 40 lbs, lost more inches than weight which is good. My issues are food.. i.e. am I supposed to be hungry? am I supposed to feel as I eat to know if Im full, currently if I get any feeling its pain and I know Ive ate too much.. I had one stuck/puking episode and I never want to eat again I would be happy never eating again but damn I run out of energy... currently I can eat mashed potatoes, pop corn chicken, turkey sausage, real good pizzas (dough is made from chicken, google them) Im frustrated because one one hand I dont want to eat but the lack of energy sucks.. one the other I need to find better food choices but Im …

First, what is generally considered as a con in our circle, I'm a MD (they call it doctor's luck when it comes to anything health related). Long story short, according to my surgeon everything was a pain due to a previous surgery I had (abdominal metal shrapnel removal - long story), lots of adherence, bleeding, lasted twice as long, but it came out alright in the end. Hospital stay was a pain. I saw them putting way more fluids than required, delaying early movement, delaying gradual oral dehydration way more than reasonable, leaving an unnecessary drain when it had no debit. Well, those things you kind of notice after a decade of taking care of patients. Needless t…
