I had surgery on Monday, it took 4 hours, I spent two nights in the hospital. I was “up and walking” on Monday night but it HURT to do it!! I’m home now and sore. I guess I thought this would be the norm, but there are so many people on here that were so much less affected by surgery- out of the hospital hours later and almost no pain reported. I had no complications but this was HARD. how many other non-super humans are out there?!??

Hello all. Yesterday I started my pre-op diet. Surgery is set for 10/8. I guess this thing is really happening. I'm a little nervous about some things like the anesthesia, post-op diet, stuck food/dumping, loose skin, etc. I find that this forum helps but it also can be a little scary. Until finding my way to this site, I was unaware of the chances of post-op depression from missing food. That does not sound like fun. Regardless, I'm here and going through with it. My main reason is quality of life as I age. I'm 48 and know if I don't lose weight I'll be facing some major health issues as I get older. Thanks for letting me vent. I have faith that i…

Hello all, My name is Greg. I have decided to take this journey of gastric bypass surgery. They tell me I don’t need to wait 6 months because my bmi is 50.5. They tell me if you are over 50 bmi then my insurance bypasses the 6 months. So October 9th, I have an appointment with the dietician. Then the day before thanksgiving I have a psych appointment. Any idea how long from there the surgery will be scheduled. This website is great and gives great encouragement.

Forgive me for this post, this might fall under the "TMI" context. Basically, I'm trying to figure out what is happening and if it's normal. Essentially, 2 weeks post-op, I'm having a lot of abdominal gas, gurgling, some pain until I pass the gas...Normally not too bad, but extremely painful today. My stool has also (a few times) been nothing but a foul-smelling gelatin like slime with some bright red splotches in them (Imagine the red thing stuck in green olives). Background: 2 weeks post op drinking 1 ounce every 7.5 minutes, which is twice the rate my doctor said, but when questioned about it, was told it would be fine. I have a tendency to forge…

Hey guys! So my surgery is scheduled 10/25/18 (pending BCBS approval , yikes) but I just had a couple question. Idk if anyone out there is like me so I'll just ask lol I'm a diabetic w/ high blood pressure, high cholesterol, retinopathy and neuropathy and ohmygosh anything else medically related to diabetes I'm pretty much the poster child for. Anywho. Question is, how long did it take for ya'll whom have this kind of illnesses to be off insulin or blood pressure medicine etc..? If it wasn't instant like right after surgery how was it monitored ? I'm just concerned. Thanks for listening!

I haven't been on this site for ages. I was banded in June 2009. Went from 74kg to 50kg, felt great. No major issues with band except that now it is really not helping. Over the past couple of years I have regained to 66kg. I feel as though I am a total failure . Went to see my Doc on Tuesday and he was lovely. He said that the lifespan of a band is between 5 - 10 years, 15 if you are really lucky and that what I am experiencing is not my fault. I was expecting him to suggest a sleeve but he said no , there are too many issues with reflux and regain etc with sleeves, that my best option is a Roux en Y. Whilst I think that is probably a better option than a sleev…

Hello everyone !!? I finally made my decision to have the Bypass, I have an appointment with my surgeon on July 3, 2018 . I decided on the bypass because I felt it would be the most effective in my weight loss journey . I at times suffer from heart burn and I have heardvthat he sleeve could possible make this worse. Also I have over a 100 lbs to drop and I believe the bypass would be a better tool to help me accomplish this goal . Prior to my 24 week required classes I weighed 336, I am now 305. My BMI is around 48 , and I am 5’7. I’m thinking my surgery will be late July or early August . My Doctor is Dr.Zorn And has done Bariatric surgeries for many y…

Today I do my pre op tesing. I'm in the final stretch now. Survey scheduled for Oct 16th. I slipped and started smoking again for a couple weeks but stopped last week. Pray I pass the nicotine test. Stressed about the 7 day liquid diet before surgery. I keep telling myself "you got this." Just wanting it done already!

I had to have the bypass revision from sleeve due to complications with the sleeve. I was already at a healthy weight, but suffered severe scar tissue complications while in the hospital that required an addition surgery to remove more scar tissue and a huge hematoma from an incision area. I was in the hospital and virtually did not eat anything for almost 2 weeks before they put me on TPN (intravenous feeding via a pic line). I lost more than 20lbs, but not in a healthy way. I know weigh 150lbs but I am all skin and bones and do not look healthy. I am extremely fatigued and am having a tough time recovering. I am a month removed from the initial revision surgery. …

Hi everyone! I've posted a couple times over the past few weeks, but have been reading posts on this site since july when I first began thinking about pursuing this surgery. I just want to thank you all for sharing your experiences here. I already feel I've learned a great deal from all the helpful posts here. With that being said, I finally have a couple of questions of my own to ask. 1). Does your pouch or your remainder stomach growl anymore after the surgery? The reason I ask is that I have a stomach legendary for it's growls. I teach English at anuniversity near Cleveland and students are amazed at how they can hear my stomach sometimes all the way in …

"Most people before their surgery, their favorite foods are just what you'd expect -- ice cream, French fries, burgers, pizza," said Patricia DiLorenzo, professor of psychology at Binghamton University. "But afterward, their favorite food was salad, for example. Twenty percent of people said that their favorite foods were vegetables. Those people -- the ones who said they changed their taste preferences -- lost the most weight." Mainstream article: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/09/180916152716.htm DiLorenzo and her team also found that people who liked coffee more post-surgery were also the people that lost the most weight. Coffee and vegetables sha…

Hello All - I just received my surgery date Thursday - set for November 5th. I am truly excited and looking forward to it. Up until this week, I had been planning to have the VSG; however, after reviewing all of the test/lab results - my doctor suggested the RNY. It appears that it will help me lose more weight - which I am at 360 now - and get rid of the co-morbidities that I suffer from (high blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes). I have research the VSG extensively, but now find myself having to switch what I know to the RNY. Does anyone have information that they would like to share - Do's and Don'ts - Suggestions - FYIs, etc. I would appreciate any and all assist…

Fellow RNY'ers, So in my quest to understand what and how we should eat, the other night I watched "What the Health" Documentary on Netflix.... Because yes I want to loose weight but even more than that I want to be healthy, have vitality, have energy, nourish my body and re-learn how to eat to support those goals. Let's just say I was...disturbed. It seems like EVERYTHING I thought about food is...wrong!? I walked over and watched my kiddos (6 and 8), peacefully sleeping, and I felt like I was failing them. For I have taught that Eggs, Milk, Chicken, Yogurt etc is good. Following this documentary I hesitate to ever buy those products again. But what an…

So my surgery was on the 4th and the night before surgery I had written an entire length of paper worth of things to bring with me. Guess how many of those things I actually used?? THREE. My chapstick, sweater, and phone charger. I didn’t even get to brush my teeth (yes I know, gross) because I was either asleep, or walking and then when I was done walking I was right back to sleep. I had a book with me and a couple times I started reading and the words started to blurr together. Before I knew it I was waking up to people coming in to check my vitals. Needless to say, don’t pack so much stuff to take with you. All it did was make more things for my husband to take to th…

I’m 6wks post op n 3 wks into mushy stage of food. I’m worried. They said only eat 1/4 cup=2oz but last night I was able to eat 8.7oz. I ate the entire Real Good pepperoni pizza that has the chicken breast as the crust. It’s a small personal size but after the surgery I wouldn’t think that I should be able to eat the entire pizza. Maybe 1/4 of it but not whole thing. I was able to eat it without any discomfort. I’ve stopped losing weight too. I haven’t lost anything in 2 wks. I’m starting my step aerobic routine n resistance bands for strength training tomorrow but I’m concerned more about the amount I can eat n wonder if I’m doing something wrong or if I’ve stretched my …

Hi Everyone. I'm 3 years post-op from a full gastric bypass. Over the last year I've seen a major shift in my health. I had an attack of vasculitis on my leg, random rashes, acne and other problems with skin breakouts (in my hair too!), anxiety/depression, fatigue, infections (bacterial and fungal) and now strange itchy rashes on my arms! I've been tested for all types of immune disorders and nothing. I'm thinking it's related to one or more mineral/vitamin deficiencies. Anyone experienced similar, and if so what was the end problem? Thanks!

Hey everyone! I cant believe a year has flown by so fast. I know when I was pre-op I used to seek out these threads to read other's experiences, so I wanted to share mine too. My start weight was 277 the day I scheduled the consult for bariatric surgery, and I was 255 the day of surgery. The first 3 months were a bit of a whirlwind. I dropped 20 pounds in the first month, and I thought it would stay that fast, boy was that some realistic thinking on my part. As real food was reintroduced during my second month I learned what the foamies were...oh my goodness, so not fun. I lost 10 pounds during month two and I remember feeling discouraged and having to reassess …

Hi y’all, I had RNY on Aug. 1. It’s been what I expected so far. Love the weight loss the most. Ha. However, I still have very smelly gas, even hours after I eat. I’m taking a probiotic my surgeon recommended, which has helped some, but mainly the burbs I would get. How do others deal with this embarrassing issue, especially now that I’m back at work? Luckily, I have a private office but still!

I just ran across this article this morning. I am on Omeprazole for heartburn. (CNN) - Sometimes, solving one problem only creates another. Millions of Americans take proton pump inhibitors to treat acid reflux and heartburn. Known as PPIs, they are among the most prescribed drugs in the United States and are widely available over the counter. But according to preliminary research presented today at an American Heart Association conference in New Orleans, these medications may also increase the risk of ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes are the most common type of stroke, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They occur when a blood clot …

I am almost two weeks post op and regretting having bypass surgery. Fortunately, I haven’t had any complications thus far but I can’t help feeling like I made a mistake. I keep worrying about all the complications that can happen that I’m stressing myself out all the time. And, I no longer enjoy eating as it feels like a chore to chew 20 times and wait 60 seconds in between bites. I regret undergoing a surgery that is irreversible and comes with so many complications. I’m sorry if I’m coming across as b****ing, I’m just wondering if this feeling is common after surgery.

So I can eat much more than the "around a half-cup of solid food" that I was told I could at this point in my post-op journey. Not that I try to each and every time, but I noticed that I was not cognizant of any signs of fullness after eating the obligatory half cup of food per meal. I wanted to have an idea of the real capacity of my "egg-sized" pouch, as well as get an idea of my body's signs of fullness and how to recognize them. I was able to eat a full cup of meat sauce (mostly meat which was ground beef). I didn't feel any fuller at one cup that I feel at a half cup. For my next meal, I could eat an entire 500-calorie slice of lasagna. Again, no sensation of d…

So I know it’s early but I have to do some extra prep this year because of my surgery. I actually usually cook ?? thanksgiving dinner every year (and Christmas) and Christmas morning we have cinnamon rolls. Obviously that’s not something I can do this year. Part of me is wondering if I’m just going to cook it like everyone wants it then go cry in a corner. What do you guys do? I have to submit a menu to the family by beginning of October so it can be debated, revamped, and planned for financially since we have to work around a bunch of different work schedules. Just some guidance and suggestions would help. I was thinking about making eggs Benedict for breakfast Xmas…

I am 14 years post gastric bypass surgery. About a year after surgery, I started having episodes where my lips would go numb and then I would get confused and shaky and start sweating profusely. After about 30 minutes, symptoms would abate and I would return to normal. It only happened once or twice a year so I ignored it. Until this year. This year it began happening once or twice a week. After a severe episode, and at the urging of a friend, I ended up in the ER close to diabetic coma even though I do not have diabetes. My blood sugar was 34. I found out the cause: fluctuating hypoglycemia. It is caused by the surgery itself. Food empties too fast into t…
