Hi bypassers. I'm currently a year out and things have been going fine for the most part. However, I have recently had 2 separate bouts of the most awful and sever intestinal cramping I've ever experienced in my life. I don't quite know what I ate or why it happened but it was horrendous. Here's what happened: I could feel like I was going to have to poop soon, but not yet, like normal, and then the pain started. It hit with sharp pains, I start to sweat (i think from the pain), so I start walking around bcos sitting is worse. The poo continues to move further down and the pain just increases the lower it goes. There's lots of noise in my lower intestines, almost like th…

I'm having surgery in a month, and I've got a question for all the vets out there. Do any of you dump with artificial sweeteners? I'd prefer stevia, of course, but Water additives are very difficult to find with stevia. My program says crystal light is fine I've found some by crystal light that are sweetened by stevia, but they have added caffeine. . However, the vast majority of crystal light is made with aspartame. Any insight would be helpful.

Tried to eat two crab sticks and I *thought* I chewed them enough, maybe ate them too fast, but then I felt it at the top of my throat, a feeling like I couldn’t burp, but it felt “frothy”. THEN the pain behind my right shoulder, holly smokes! 20 minutes of walking in the house before it stopped. Those things are off limits for a few more weeks!

So, my 4 weeks is officially today. I've lost 26lbs. I should be thrilled, right? Nope. I have this total mental derp happening that makes me feel like I will somehow be the only person in gastric bypass history to ONLY lose 26lbs and that's it. I'm done. No more weight loss. lol! I think because I've had so many failures in the past, I just anticipate this being another one of them... even though I am following everything the best I can (in light of my ulcer, I am low on protein - working on it!) I also have a mental derp against protein shakes. Aside from my whey allergy and getting super nauseous... back in 2009 I had liposuction when I was a mere 140lbs. After s…

Hi Folks. Question that you all may or may not have run into. I had roux-en-y GBS 1.5 years ago. Lost almost 100 pounds. That is going well. I have some chronic back issues (degenerative disc dz in lumbar and cervical region) and have done all the injections, radiofrequency ablations, epidural blocks, etc., that I can manage. Pain persists, but ortho has stated it is not appropriate for surgery. To be fair, I wasn't really going around hunting down someone to operate b/c the idea of back surgery is not exactly thrilling to me, having taken care of the post-op back surgery patients in home health and with the back surgery success rate of 50%. Prior to surgery, I was …

I am curious how common post-bariatric surgery hypotension is. 18 months after my bypass I was admitted to the hospital for pain that was later determined to be from a marginal ulcer. My blood pressure at that time was 78/45 after 4 liters of IV fluids even though I was in terrible pain. For the next 6 months my pressure rarely exceeded 85/55 and was as low as 61/45 one morning-I had to stay home from work, couldn't stand up. I went through a million tests, echocardiogram, EKG, endocrine testing, etc-all negative. No cause was found. I am told I have dysautonomia which is a nerve dysfunction, in this case of the blood pressure-regulating mechanism. This happens after gast…

In fall of 1997, I went on a particularly bad/embarrassing date. After a bit of humiliation, I realized that in order to impress the ladies, I needed to lose weight. I weighed 220 pounds at the time. I got down to 180, then worked my way up to around 263 by around 2004. I then went on a huge diet and got down to 163 towards the end of 2005. I then gained weight again and got up to around 290 around 2010 when I had my lap band. I was able to get down to 220 sometime in 2011, and that was the lowest I got with the band. I was 303 Late December of 2017. I had surgery in July, and was discharged ~ July 11th at 287#. Today I weigh 219.6 This is the least I'v…

I'm 7 weeks post-op and down 58.5LBS. I was off pain meds in 5 days. I've had 2 dumping episodes and have vomited twice (I assume from overeating). I can tolerate pretty much all foods and can even have a martini or two. My only regret is not doing this surgery years ago! For those of you that are pre-op or in your first days post-op, stay strong! It's worth it!

Hey, all, After years and years of putting off surgery, I finally underwent a gastric bypass procedure on November 6 of this year. On one hand, I was pleasantly surprised that I really did not suffer any significant pain or complications, etc. However, since I have been feeling well (and perhaps overly confident), over the past few days, there were a few instances when I inadvertently drank my few protein shakes too fast (which were made with a mixed base of water, skim milk, Isopure, and half a banana (which my NUT has approved), to the point where I felt a tinge of discomfort. Moreover, I admit that I was being rather foolish because I did not really measure the…

I'm sure this topic has been brought up Serval times, but I'm seriously having major anxiety about this. I need this surgery, but I'm afraid I won't be approved because of these damn cigarettes ugh. Heres my questions if y'all can answer My first meeting with the surgeon is 12/13/18 and I'm still smoking, will I be tested for smoking that day or at a later time and will the test be done blood or urine? I'm trying really f**king hard to stop, but my god ive been smoking since I was 14 and I'm 36. How long does nicotine stay in your urine or blood please help if you can

So, I waited until today, Day 3 of the liquid pre-op diet, to post. Yesterday was awful. Total lack of concentration at work, perpetual headache, hunger....Then today. It's like a switch went off. I feel energized, positive. Still a bit of a headache but nothing like yesterday. I can do this!! How did everyone else do on their dreaded pre-op diet? Did you ever want to cheat? If I had been asked that question yesterday, I think I would have answered differently. Today, I know I can stay on course. I need to do this for me. Cheating would only be hurting myself and this whole journey is about finally loving and respecting myself! WHOOHOO!!

I am almost 15 months Post Op (RnY Bypass). My goal weight is 165 lbs and this afternoon I weighed in at 170.0, only 5 lbs away. I am starting to feel a lot of emotion about my journey. It has been a lot easier than I thought it would be and the weight loss was slower than I expected but it was steady. I now find myself wondering if I am going to stop losing when I reach 165 lbs or will I continue? Will it have to be a daily thought to eat a little more than I am eating now so I will stop losing? I am excited for Thanksgiving and know that I won't have any problems eating correctly and not over eating, Once I set my mind to something I have no problem achieving it, …

Has anyone gone into Ketosis at 2 weeks out from surgery? I haven’t bought the strips yet as I haven’t even thought about Ketosis because I’ve been focusing on maintaining with the diet. I have what looks to be a Keto rash and my breath smells like all the time now. Dr told me to monitor the rash and although he didn’t say anything about Keto rash it looks exactly like the pics I’ve seen online. Anyone else have this issue throughout their journey?

Ok, bypass people...I’m reading a lot lately and have found quite a bit of info out there suggesting that bypass, for some people, causes pretty catastrophic, uncontrollable, very smelly gas. Anyone wish to enlighten us on this? I haven’t had surgery yet, but the thought of sitting in my own fart cloud all day or having one squeak out in the middle of a department meeting is not my idea of a good time...? Here’s one I just read: https://www.obesityaction.org/community/article-library/pull-my-finger-a-mostly-polite-look-at-intestinal-gas-for-post-weight-loss-surgery-patients/

I am one week postop and have been starving since I was in the hospital. I am feeling really discouraged because I thought this would help with my hunger at least a little, but it did nothing?? So now instead of actually being able to eat what I used to and feel satisfied, I eat my 2.5 oz and continue to feel starving. I am also having the same old cravings and I worry that them, coupled with my hunger, is going to lead to failure. I could have starved myself without surgery.... Yes, I've contacted my surgical team and I'm getting a lot of "we don't knows" and have been forwarded to 4 different members of the team so far and I'm now waiting on the 4th to try to find an an…

I've made a new friend on this forum. He currently has a BMI of 63. Apparently, there isn't even a term to classify his size. I found somewhere that Super Morbidly Obese is for a BMI of 50 or so. Anyway, this new friend has a great sense of humor so I know he can appreciate his dilemma of being medically nameless. But I digress... After meeting with his nutritionist and surgeon recently (since he was still trying to decide sleeve vs bypass) his size pretty much decided for him. I found out why below: "A BMI of 60 or above is categorized as super morbid obesity. A laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in these patients is technically very difficult due to the siz…

After a long and hard fight to get approval for my Bypass - it finally got approved and am booked in for surgery on the 1st of October. The nerves are kicking in already and have been a ball of emotions today! Now begins the next month of a diet to ensure I am in better shape for it. I keep asking myself am I doing the right thing, I know I am as I am currently on a horrible road and if I keep going down the road I am going, it's not going to end well! Please tell me I am doing the right thing, and that you have all felt similar emotions!

I haven't had surgery yet, however, I have chronic indigestion/heartburn. This scares me after reading so many people experience ulcers after surgery. I'm almost worried I might already have one. So far, all I take are Zantac 150 or Tagamet, which as of recently has become almost a daily necessity. I know I should consult my doctor (which will be happening on 12/03), but what are ya'lls personal experiences with either Nexium or Prilosec as far as efficacy?

In the keto world where I come from, just like here, folks are plagued with the dreaded "stalls" then like magic, the scales begin to move again in the desired direction. I'm surprised I've never heard the topic of the "whoosh effect" discussed in here. For the sake of not writing a novel, I'll provide infographics and some helpful links to read for those interested. I'm not here to argue about the validity of this concept so please, if you don't agree, feel free to leave adult-worthy, constructive feedback or just scroll on by. I personally have experienced several "whooshes" over the course of the past year and half, so if anything, this stuff makes sense. What's a…

Because I have awful acid reflux the surgeon wants to do a gastric bypass where he makes my stomach into a pouch BUT he wants to do something similar to a duodenal switch as well to maximize my weightloss, he feels its necessary at this point in my weightloss. Anyone have something similar? I feel like this is very rare lol. He said he has 2-3 patients who will be getting the same thing done.

Well after all the 'tooing and froing' back to my surgeon complaining about vomiting - they've booked me in for an endoscopic dilation because they now think I have stenosis. Anyone got any experience of this? Obviously - if it stops the vomiting then it's a good thing - but the thought of having to go through more 'stuff' at the hospital (especially cameras and stuff down my throat) is not filling me joy! You guys have all been amazing so far - hope you can help again!

So, some may have seen some threads where I was complaining that it hurt really bad to swallow. I am 15 days out now and get about 20oz of water a day. I just got back from my surgeon and he is 95% sure I've developed an ulcer where my esophagus meets the pouch. (I am not a smoker) He put me on Carafate 4 times a day and asked me to resume Percocet. It really really hurts to swallow. Even spit hurts to swallow. They are doing an endoscopy Monday to ensure it's not a stricture, but nothing ever comes back up or gets stuck... it just burns like the fires of hell, lol, which is a massive deterrent to swallowing. They also put me back on liquids. I was on soft foods. Anyone…

Hello there I'm from Australia I'm currently 320lbs and my ultimate goal would be 190lbs as i am tall and come from a family of big builds so 190 would be perfect. Here in Australia we can use health insurance to pay most of the surgery but I'll still be out of pocket $5000 but the catch is we must weight out 12 months before we get surgery i finally signed up for insurance 2 months ago so my surgery will be just after my 35th birthday ? and then should be able to lose the 130lbs within the following 10 months in time for my 36th birthday party.. I would just like to hear from others who are going through the operation Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass. I've done tons of rese…

Hi everyone! I am doing some of my own research on this and will also go back to my doctors with the same questions, but wanted to throw it out here as well. I have always had slightly elevated liver enzymes, but the last 4-6 months, they keep elevating every time they do labs. I am now seeing a hepatologist and she is testing liver enzymes every 2 weeks to keep a close eye on them and may end up doing a liver biopsy if this continues. Has anyone else here experienced this over a year after surgery? I don't even know if it has anything to do with surgery as I also have some autoimmune issues going on. Could it have something to do with increased protein intake …

Hi!! My name is Jessica. I’m new on here and have been stalking posts for a few weeks. Any question I’ve had so far I’ve been able to find an answer what an amazing help this app has been for me! I had a lap band placed in June 2009 and subsequently removed in July 2016. I just had Gastric Bypass a few days ago on October 24th. After a couple pain filled restless nights in the hospital I was discharged on Friday afternoon and I am feeling much better now. I am not in too much pain, some abdominal pain that is well controlled with meds, zero incision pain. I have pain when deep breathing though so I’ve been using the incentive spirometer like a champ! I don’t feel hungr…

Yay! I have a marginal ulcer! "Fortunately" the surgeon said it looks like it's already healing over... although it sure doesn't feel that way. I am on puree only for 2-4 more weeks (I had made it to soft foods). I am 19 days out. I knew I wasn't crazy! It hurts soooo bad swallowing, but the Carafate is amazing. On it for 30 days and Pepcid 40mg for 3 months. Surgeon says I probably got an ulcer because I am a former smoker. Smoking is bad, kids. To anyone pre-op or considering RNY... quit now. Just in case. I quit a year ago, but probably had about 3 packs over the last year while socializing, and 2 cigs within a month of surgery. So I guess I never TOTALLY quit. But I a…

I had my 2nd appt. with the nutritionist and asked her about liquid proteins etc. She said starting week 2 it protein form normal sources, even chicken as long as you chew it up well. From what I have read most people seem to be on soft foods for 4-6 weeks. Is that the norm? My other question -- after surgery (months later/long term) can you take an advil? I thought I read something about after Bypass surgery that you couldn't take it. What do I do in 20 years if I have arthritis?

Well I hope I am in the right forum this time. On 11/13/18 I had the lap band removed, what was supposed to take 15 min. to 45 min. took 4 hours. My husband was pretty nervous about this. The Dr. came out and told him that there was a lot of scar tissue that had to be removed and asked if I had had any other surgery done. My husband told him that only what I had told him about. I did have full disclosure with my Dr.. He said also that the reason I was having so much side pain is that they had put in a cancer port instead of a lap band port it was flipped. Has anyone on here ever heard of this happening. I had the lap band done in San Antonio Tx by a reputable Dr. 9 years …

Well, it's the time of the year, where we get ready to put on our running shoes and fight for no-name TV's cook holiday dinners. I am blessed to live in California, and it is apple season here. Today I went apple picking and got some Red Delicious, Johnagold and Granny Smiths. I absolutely love apple pie. This is obviously not a great food to eat, at least when prepared as usual. I'm curious if others have no-dump recipes for Apple pies (Or to open this up more, anything you'd find on a Thanksgiving dinner). I know I could bake a pie with Spenda or Truvia, but I'm trying to figure out how to make a crust that would be low/no carb.
