Sorry for the nOOb questions I know is probably explained well somewhere on here, but I want up to date feedback... #1 Why exactly can't you drink while eating? Not even a sip to wash something down? What if something gets stuck in your throat and you need to drink? What's the thing with straws? #2 If you no longer have your pyloric sphincter in place to keep food in your stomach/pouch, how in the world do you ever feel full? How does everything not just immediately go from esophagus to pouch to small intestine? How long does solid food stay in the pouch? Same with Liquids? EDIT: #3 How is food kept from backing up into the part of the intestine marked by #…

So, I’m 3 weeks post-op RNY. I made a dinner a few nights ago with a scrambled egg, 1/2 slice of high protein toast and a Morning Star meatless sausage. All within the realm of good food. However, I made the mistake of not waiting long enough after drinking some water. I finished not even half before the pain hit. That was the first time feeling the restriction. Ouch!! But it was a needed lesson! Follow the guidelines and no drinking 1/2 before/at least 1 hour after!

Hi all, I just had my surgery on Monday. After surgery, I kept drinking too much water because I was walking through the desert thirsty. My brain said keep drinking but my new plumbing said slow down! I think i'm finally getting the hang of sipping out of the one ounce cups. That's a tough lesson to learn.

Monday marks 7 full weeks on puree! Doctor's orders due to marginal ulcer. In the beginning I was bent everyone else was progressing to soft foods. Next week I would be cleared for more solids and larger portion sizes. But oddly, I am getting really used to puree. I love everything I can eat. Oh no... you mean I can only eat cream cheese, delicious soy shakes, mashed eggs, deli salads and cottage cheese? Whatever shall I do? Woe is me. Syke. It's great. I don't know if that's a good thing. I have NO desire to even progress because the ulcer has made anything else really hurt to try. Like a food aversion to anything that isn't super squish. The few times I did try somethin…

Hi all, I had gastric bypass Jan 2018. Before my pre-surgery liquid diet I weighed 334lbs. Right now I am floating between 260-265lbs. I've been gaining and losing the same 5lbs since about May of 2018. I lift weights and am very aware of how to eat healthy, but lately I make bad choices about half the time. I believe this surgery has uncovered and made me aware of a food addiction, because I can't stop thinking about eating! I always knew i loved food, but never viewed it as an addiction until the ability to eat tons of it was taken away from me. While I'm eating, I'm thinking about what I'm going to eat next. I'm hungry all the time and despite having a tiny gastri…

I'm one month out from my bypass. Last night, I had intense leg pain in my right calf. Pain has to be off-the-charts for me to even notice. When you take as much morphine as I do (for an unrelated chronic condition), the pain has to be really bad. This was at least an 8 out of 10. This afternoon, after suffering all night and all day today, I finally mentioned what was going on. My daughter dropped by for a visit and she could see right away that I was trying to hide my pain from her. I could have lied, told her it was post-surgery discomfort, but I don't like being dishonest with my kids. Anyway, it wasn't my idea to go to the ER. My daugh…

I just can't reiterate enough on how glad I am that I decided to have surgery[emoji847]!!! My journey started in June of 2017, that's when I decided to go with the gastric bypass. I had to wait for a whole year before I actually had surgery, due to not being able to keep my weight down??♀️. I finally had surgery in June 2018 and it has been the best decision I could have made to regain control of my body and my life. I thought it would take close to a year, to get near my goal weight. However, to my amazement i'm only 19 lbs., away from my goal weight now[emoji1495]♀️!!! Since my journey began up until now, I have lost 113 lbs.! I have noticed that my metabolism has spe…

We had our Bariatric Support Group Holiday party and I won a $20.00 gift certificate to the bariatric store (my bariatric surgeon has a store in the office). When I go to see him next month I will be buying some bariatric stuff (food, protein drinks, etc). They had a raffle for these certificates this year, last year they had trophies.

This time a year ago, I was lying in hospital having had open surgery. I had my gastric band removed, including the port which had been replaced using mesh which had rolled up and caused a few issues including abscesses and infections on and around my liver. I had the band removed, and a ‘fobi pouch’ variety of the RNY - with a slightly longer but narrower stomach than is usual, with a small silastic ring sutured loosely around its middle - no stomach stretching for me! Initially I made my weight goal the same as my gastric band low - 80kg (176lbs) and then as the weight dropped, reset it at the top of the ‘not overweight bmi’ range for my height 70kg (156lbs) -…

This morning I woke up suddenly at 1am extremely nauseous. I jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom and dry-heaved my brains out for about 10 min. Only a small amount of mucus and saliva came up. There wasn't anything TO come up, as my last "meal" was a soy shake at 6pm the previous day. Before that I had 2oz puree chicken salad at noon. I went back to bed and woke up a few times nauseous, but not pukey. I am staying home from work and going in at noon. Trying to sip water but it makes me nauseous as soon as it hits my stomach so I've only had 6 sips in the last hour. What gives?!?

So...is it any different? Instead of explosive vomiting with a full, normal size stomach, is post-op puking a quieter, bubble up type situation into your mouth? Sorry for the gross topic, but I'm curious. I spend 9hr a day in a relatively open office type cubicle with folks around me that can hear me, but not see me. I'm hoping that if I get in a puking predicament, it's something that no one will necessarily be able tell unless I spit into the trashcan or something...

I am three weeks post op and have lost 30 pounds in the last 4 weeks!! I am on pureed foods, refried beans, yogurt, cottage cheese, soups. I am NEVER hungry so it is hard to remember to eat, because I just don't have the urge to eat. I don't feel hungry. Anyone else feel like this?

Ok, so for the past week or so, the act of eating or even the thought of eating has become increasingly uninteresting to me. I am 7 weeks post-op tomorrow. I honestly would rather not have to sit down and eat my x number of tablespoons of whatever as its been feeling like a chore. Its odd because the actual chore of preparing and cooking meals (for the fam) I look forward to. I also enjoy looking up and preparing single serve "meals" for myself and stacking them up nicely in the freezer. I just don't really care (or feel the need to care) to eat them. I have been dutifully taking my vitamins/supplements and getting 2-3 litres of water in daily. I force mys…

Mind you I haven't had surgery yet so if these go against post-op rules or anything, I'm here to learn about it. My store was out of Premier Protein vanilla, but these were right next door on the shelf so I decided, heck, why not see if they suck or not. These shakes are VERY VERY tasty, folks. Equally as tasty as Premier (if you like Premier). By themselves and in my coffee, holy cow Both the vanilla and the chocolate. They claim to have 30g of protein in 11oz....now, the TYPE of protein might be the kicker. It's not whey protein isolate. **FYI** Fellow Keto Peeps (if there are any here): If you're eating strict ketogenic (i.e. Ketovangelist style), these …

It's been awhile since I've posted - but thought I'd post some before and after pictures. This was taken last week when I hit the century loss - but today I'm officially 101 pounds down! My BMI says I should get down to 140, but I think I'll be healthy at 150 - so I'm 10 pounds to my personal goal. I did start working out with a personal trainer which I think will help with these last few pounds.

I'm over a year post op from bypass and still have a problem keeping food and drink down. I was on tpn for eight months and now am on a j peg feeding tube. I have had complications every step of the way. I had a lap band in 2005 and removed in 2016 due to slipped and caused severe ulceration so. Gastric bypass done in January 2017 in hospital for ten day due to complications and infection. Went back in hospital in March for over three weeks with mersa. Back in hospital in June for ten days, had pic line put in and tpn started. Back in hospital in August for another ten days with a revision of the entire bypass again due to severe ulcers. Had gall bladder out in Oc…

Last week at my first surgeon appointment, they had me get on this nifty scale with no socks or shoes on. Afterward, the girl said 86lbs of me is fat...the remaining 159lbs makes up the rest of my tissues, bones and other internals. I sat there like... "Really?!" I'm 5'4", 245lbs, but kind of naturally built like one of those Clydesdale horses LOL I've never worked out a day in my life, but have quite a bit of muscle tone. Has anyone else had any experience with one of these scales? How accurate are they? Doctor wants me to do RNY, but if all I have to lose is 86lbs then that shouldn't take too much time, right? (possibly? maybe?)

I was just told today that surgeons don't recommend gastric bypass to younger people because you have a longer lifespan of not getting enough nutrients (contraindicated for long-term risk and permanency), and it has a devastating impact when you are older. I have noticed that pretty much everyone I've met or talked to that had gastric is 40's or later. Anyone here in their 20's like me?

I'm super shy and haven't really reached out to anyone yet. My entire process started really slow and has literally been moving so fast that it's hard to keep up. I started this process in July. My highest weight was 401 and my current weight is 360. I met with the surgeon yesterday, my surgery is scheduled for next Friday and my liquid diet starts today. It's hard to believe that I've met all my goals, got cleared from nutrition and psychology and saw the surgeon in just a few months. It been almost surreal. I'm hoping to make a few friends and help encourage people going through this process too! Here's a little bit about me: Name: Angel Age: 26 Height: 5'8 Cw: 360 Hw: …

The pre op diet has made me very ill. I go back and forth between awful headaches and suffering from nausea. If I have a small amount of food head and and stomach issue goes away. Not talking full meals here by no means. so now I find myself 4 days out from surgery and not having successfully transitioned to liquid diet. I have lost 6 pounds but worry that it is not enough for the liver shrink thing. Stressing over pre-op appointment today. Ugg do not want to mess this up. my total weight loss so far before surgery is 33 pounds but sense first visit is only 18 in 5 months

Anyone else experiencing very vivid dreams post op? My dreams are way more intense then they ever were preop. Some of them very fun and exciting ? some of them not but mostly all good. Not sure if it’s from not eating as much and losing weight quickly or something else. Not worried about it but just one of those unexpected side effects.

Just had RNY on 11/28 and will be starting Week 2 - Pureed foods. My diet guide from the surgeon and nutritionist lists scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt and pureed soups. Any ideas for good pureed soups - either to buy or recipes? Should I be really careful of fat grams, carbs, etc.?

Hi Everybody, I'm 4 weeks post op and still working through my soft mechanical diet and have had a couple instances lately where after two or three bites of a meal feeling full and becoming sick to the point of vomiting. Not to be gross here but what I see if very little food but large quantities of mucus coming up. Afterwards if I wait for a little bit I have no issues finishing my meal. My provider told me to start Claritin ready tabs tomorrow to see if it's coming from allergies but wondering if anybody else has had a similar issue and how you might have addressed it. Thank you

Can I have zevia sugar free root beer soda, if I let the carbonation go flat? As far as I can tell there is no sugar or bad substitutes that would be harmful. Unlike some of the ice creams I’ve seen suggested it doesn’t have sugar alcohols in it that I can see anyways. I was told to watch their intake with gastric bypass by my surgery team. I know carbonation is bad. So do any of you drink sugar free drinks like Coke Zero or zevia once in awhile - as long as it goes flat or at least sits a bit to lose some carbonation. I miss the taste of the stuff and the bubbles too. But I’d settle for a few sips as a treat. Just don’t want to hurt myself or Stretch pouc…

So, I went out last Saturday with a friend to a local bar. No, not to drink (although he did). I had been craving a chicken wing and just wanted one wing. Few things to preface this: First off, I *should* still be on puree due to my ulcer and secondly, DO NOT GET OLD BAY ON A WING IF YOU HAVE AN ULCER. Bad times were had. I confessed to my surgeon Tuesday and he said it was fine... but no spice! Derrrr. Anyways, me being a bad patient aside.... Eating out is so weird! I order 6 wings and a cheese plate. I had the one wing and two cheese cubes and I was stuffed. My friend ate 4 stuffed mushrooms, 12 wings, cheese cubes, and some other stuff. The bartender asked me ab…

Worried about the fact that almost every time I eat. Even if I’m my opinion I’m not over eating. I keep gagging or having a food stuck feeling. Then I throw up. Almost everything I eat the past days. Also simple things like Powerade zero and sometimes crystal light even make me sick or go to the bathroom a bunch. Or have stomach turning. But I want something different than water sometimes. I also drink unsweet tea and occasionally will splash lemon juice or lemonade like Minute Maid into it at a soda fountain. But when I say splash. I mean splash. For the lemon flavor. But not so much that the sugars would make me dump or sick. Although sometimes I still worr…

Hello, I'm wondering if any of you bypass patients have gone through what I've just gone through. I was working toward getting a sleeve, but was just notified today that a sleeve is out of the question due to a 4cm hiatus hernia found yesterday. My surgeon says no sleeve, it will have to be bypass. Has this happened to you? If so, please let me know I have company. I am a bit disoriented, now.

I am currently 2.5 years out after Gastric Bypass. I have had a lot of ups and downs but something new has started. I can eat and drink fine and all of a sudden I feel like I have a stomach virus and throw up any little sips I take. This usually last for about 4 hours and passes. I am not sure why this is happening and if it has happened to anyone else.
