  1. Started by aiekpwld,

I hope this is okay for posting. Not exactly the topic or story I wanted to bring up in public, but hopefully some anonymity shall make it a tad less god awful. I've had a long term eating disorder spanning decades. It's fluctuated in type over the years, but relapse has been more of a familiarity to me than recovery. I wouldn't say I've been in official recovery the past year, but negative and self destructive behaviours have diminished considerably compared to what they once were. My surgeon was told up front of my eating disorder and issues there, as was the dietician during the consultation prior to pre-ad etc. I work with my GP, mental health professionals …

  2. I am losing my mind here. I have had THREE episodes of several abdominal pain. Two of which landed me in the E.R. This pain is right under my breast bone, in the center. It's sharp, like a hot knife and a burning sensation radiates into my back. It actually makes my shoulder blades hurt! I have to double over from the pain. It's just pain. No nausea or anything. Each time it has happened, I was drinking, not eating. And just sipping, nothing drastic. The pain lasts about 30 minutes each episode. On a scale of 1-10, I'd say 7. I have had my heart tested, pancreas, liver, kidney. Nothing. I've been admitted to the hospital. No one can figure out whats goin…

  3. I’m having a revision Thursday morning . My old lap band is being removed and revised to an rny. He’s like the top in his game but I did find it unusually wonderful that he is not requiring any kind of pre Op dieting or even a day of clear prior . In fact I can actually drink water up until 3 hours prior . The only thing he mentioned after I received my approval was “hey eat low carb high protein” . I had that pre op weigh last week and had not gained and lost a few and nothing was mentioned . I’m only 215 but need this done for a slip and other health issues . Should I start a liquid diet for myself tomorrow just to kick start and make it easier? I had my band unfilled 3…

  4. On Sep 4 ‘18 I am having my RYGB surgery. During the whole 6 month diet I had no worries about what would happen to my body after surgery but the closer my date gets the more I’m becoming concerned. I am terrified of having loose skin after surgery. I know that exercise helps but once that skin has been stretched out so much there’s a point of no return right?? Also, I’ve heard a lot of people get sick after surgery. As in they are throwing up after every meal they eat. A friend of mine threw up all the time for months after her GB. I sort of have a phobia about throwing up, and I know that this doesn’t happen to everyone, but how many of you experienced this? If there…

I mean Jesus. I had my surgery 9 days ago. Complete success. Surgeon literally described my insides as "beautiful." I can drink in measures way bigger than sips. On day three of being home, my partner ordered chili fish, dan dan noodles, spicy peanuts and cumin fries from a GREAT chinese place in our neighborhood. I ate a bunch of it AND WAS FINE. I accepted that I need to eat according to plan and I'm back on shakes, bone broth and cottage cheese... but I'm even limiting THAT because I want to lose weight. Cravings-wise, I could READILY eat a burger or some pizza or nachos or a sub or turkish food or more chinese or lox and bagel or french fries or JESUS EVERYTHING. A co…

  6. I'm 11 days post op from bypass and having a hard time drinking anything. The first few sips I get a horrible nausea and aches. It passes in a few minutes but makes me hate drinking. Does anyone else have this?

  7. Started by CyclicalLoser,

I'm curious for those people that are a few weeks out - I'm recovering quite well, no food or vomiting issues, and after an initial bout of loose stools, I'm back to constipation as we're somewhat used to. (I got the okay today to take a chewable fiber pill so long as I get enough fluids in). Anyways, all of my incisions are healing good, and the dermabond is coming off as the doctor said it would...but...a few days ago I started experiencing pain in my lower torso, next to my biggest incision. It happens to be the incision that is "dented in". The pain feels a bit like a tear and it gets worse when rolling around in bed (I'm a side/belly/back sleeper LOL) and whe…

Hi everyone! A little history on me.. I'm 33 years old, married with 5 children. I have ALWAYS been overweight. I have no other current medical issues and I'm scheduled for the Bypass August 27th. I'm nervous. I've never been put to sleep before...I'm hearing all kinds of horror stories about people passing out, getting tube feedings, etc. IT SCARES ME! I often think about my 5 babies and wondering if I'll even make it out of surgery okay... this is normal right? I just want to be HAPPY. Being big it's hard to keep up anymore, hard to find cute clothes... etc. I'm ready for CHANGE!

So I’m now 7 wks post op. I have lost 54 pounds since May 26th which was the start of pre surgery diet. I lost 24 pounds pre surgery then gained 20 back due to fluids as I left hospital after 4 days in hospital post surgery. Since being out of hospital I lost everything again and lost a total of 54. So I suppose I’m just slightly disappointed that after 7 weeks I have not lost more than 30 lbs of new weight because I really don’t count the 24 pounds of weight I lost pre surgery. Where were you at at this 7-9 week post op on weight loss?

I'm 4 weeks out tomorrow, but I've been more or less putting the brakes on when drinking. Today I was distracted and drank 17oz in less than an hour. No problems whatsoever - no feeling like I'm going to throw up, no weird abdominal issues, no strange sounds, gas or anything. Only difference is the liquid disappeared faster than normal and my urine was nearly clear. I talked with my surgeons office about this a while back, namely that I was able to drink much faster than 1oz over 15 minutes. They weren't concerned with my ability to drink twice to 4 times as fast. I've always been able to drink fast. Even with my lap band, I could consume 20oz in less than …

I'm about 80 hours post surgery following a repair on Petersen's hernia. Had a CT scan Monday which showed abnormalities (60% or more of these hernias don't show in ct). So op was diagnostic and therapeutic both. They found most of my bowel had migrated through a hole in Petersen's area. Was lucky it had not caused more problems- have had intermittent stomach pain for six months. Anyway - reason for posting: don't ignore abdo pain after rny surgery. Weightloss can cause holes in membrane that encloses bowel. If this trapped bowel becomes strangulated (loses blood supply) can result in bowel resection - bits cut off - colostomy or even septicemia and death. They …

Why we should not drink alcohol, and or eat sugars. Last night I had a cocktail. This particular drink itself was very high in sugar and I knew I should not have been drinking it. To add to this I cheated a little and enjoyed 3 starburst candies, which I washed down with my super sugary alcoholic libation causing is to dump directly into my small intestine. Shortly there after I had some pretty strong heart palpitations which subsided after a few minutes. I attributed this to dehydration, so in incorporated some water into my drinking while still working on my cocktail. fast forward about 1.5 hours later I stood up from my bed quickly and got tunnel vision horribly almost…

  14. this was my 6th week pass surgery and I have started eating regular food. I am still just eating what I'm supposed to but this week I did not lose any weight at all. In fact I gained 1 pound. I don't understand why I'm still not losing quickly. Did this happen to anyone else.?

  15. Started by mckenzie,

Anyone else get extremely annoyed when they’ve had to get IV fluids and then weigh the next day and you’ve gained a few pounds?! I understand this happens (especially when you got 8 bags within 48 hours) but ugh it just frustrates me. The IV fluids weren’t for dehydration only - I had a stricture develop and had to stay overnights until the surgeon could get me in to fix it. I had finally gotten under 200 lbs too and now I’m back right at 200 lbs... Oh well I guess.. Now I’m just focusing on my fluids and sticking to my nutritionists advice.

I got the results of a repeat sleep study today and I no longer have sleep apnea. The sleep doctor said that my average apneas per hour was 2.3 which is well below the threshold for obstructive sleep apnea. This is the third benefit that I've realized post-op. The first two were off of blood sugar control and blood pressure medicines. Tonight, I am going to try to sleep without the CPAP machine. The sleep doctor actually told me that continuing to use the machine may actually cause problems at this point. I shall see how I feel tomorrow morning!

But has anyone gone back to school later in life like 27ish for their first undergrad degree after this surgery. By the time I have classes I’ll be about 6 months out I’ll also be working so do you think my energy will be back by then I mean like before I gained 100 pounds lol. Because I was able to do an 18 hour shift before and not blink twice so guys chime in

  18. Does anyone have any experiences with these foods (positive and/or negative) post gastric bypass? And if you're ok with them, when did you introduce that food back in to your diet? I'm trialling some foods pre op before my optifast 2 week diet.

  20. Started by Crissy A,

Im struggling to get in enough protein in a day. My doctor said to only eat when I get hungry which is usually twice a day. And even then its not much. Im usually under 500 calories in a day. Doctor also said to stop drinking protein shakes. Any advice would be great. How are you guys getting in enough protein?

Quick recap- I had the sleeve on 2/5/2014 and had tons of complications. I was in the hospital a lot, I had a PICC line and then a feeding tube. It was a rough 6 months. My stomach basically didn’t tolerate food or drink, so there was a lot of puking. Fast forward to needing a revision to bypass on 6/26/2018 due to severe reflux and damage. The surgery went great, I healed well, no nausea. I was rocking it. I am doing great on full liquids but am failing miserably on soft foods. I don’t know if it’s psychological or what. I can do one cheese stick a day if I chew very well. I am okay with yogurt, just small amounts. I get sick on refried beans, cottage cheese, eggs,…

  25. Today I am three months post gastric bypass. I've lost 54 pounds so far, and have been taking my measurements monthly. Everything is progressing as I would like, but when I took my arm measurements they went up (despite using the same methodology as past months). The day before surgery, the widest part of my arm was 21.5, at one month it was 19, at two months it was still 19, but at three months it was 20.5. Is this normal? Just FYI, I've been doing water aerobics 4x a week for an hour each time, which includes upper body strengthening.

  26. When did people start noticing your weightloss and how different you look? I’m 8lbs away from losing a total of 50lbs in under 3 months and quite honestly NO ONE has said Damn you look smaller or wow you’ve lost weight. They simply haven’t noticed any change. My mom sees it but she’s also paying attention to the changes because she is the only one who knows about my surgery. I took lots of pics and i steady take them to compare myself and the change IMO is astronomical. I truly don’t need the validation from others and I’ll even be uncomfortable with that sort of attention but I’m curious to know.. when did others start noticing that you were smaller? Did people that hadn…

I know everyone has plateaus. I am very concerned and upset because I was able to lose 38 pounds in the first 3 weeks following surgery. However, over the past 4 weeks I have not lost any weight or inches or part of an inch. I am still eating small amounts and totaling between 493 and 724 calories per day. Logically this doesn’t make sense, this is not enough to live on yet nothing is coming off. I am exercising and getting in my protein and water. I don’t know what to do. With the ordeal of surgery and recovery, to not lose any weight after week 3 is extremely disheartening. The only change has been that I returned to work. Does anyone have any ideas?

  28. Hi everyone, I am 5 weeks, almost 6 weeks since my gastric bypass. I did have an IUD put in on day 9 and haven't stopped bleeding. That might be TMI but it might help explain some things. After week 2, I got down to 261lbs. I was 283 in the hospital after surgery. I did really well. Now I'm up to 266.5. Some daily info on me is my BMR is 1962.85, I use about 2,777 calories a day, I take in about 60 to 70 oz of water, and I eat about 800 calories a day. Why am I gaining weight? I've been around this weight for the last 3 weeks. I've heard of stalls, but a 3 week stall right out of the gate? Am I failing at weight loss surgery? As far as exercise…

  29. Hi Everybody! Weird to have this be my first post given how many questions I had pre-op and how much reading other people's posts and comments helped me, but I just had my bypass surgery yesterday and I finally have . Anyhow... I'm still in the hospital... and my belly is shaved and there are definitely 5 wounds on it... but I'm not having any nausea, any change in cravings or hunger... okay, maybe I have more energy and I feel less weird about not eating... but what's REALLY strange is that I've had no problem drinking 3 cups of broth and three cups of water. None of the baby sipping I'd heard about-- and no irritation. My surgeon said he reduced my stomach to 40ccs…

Just a general FYI. From someone who has always had a rough time with the surgery, and will hopefully soon have her bypass reversed. I have always suffered with fluid staying down and so I have to be extra careful in the choices that I make. I really need electrolytes as most of my many, many visits to the ER, I have needed fluid and have been low on electrolytes. Many may already know this, but today I was shopping at a Casey's "small convenience store" and they have something I have not seen yet. It is Gatorade Zero. I am trying the Glacier Cherry and it is pretty good. Now this is not to be confused with the PowerAde Zero as I have drank them as well, but often…

  31. I am 4 days post-op & really struggling with the flavour/texture of the chewable vitamins (Centrum multi & Life brand Calcium Citrate)... I pretty much start gagging the minute I put it into my mouth. My #1 greatest fear is throwing up. Any recommendations or ideas?

  32. Started by gailf,

I am 4 weeks post op, as of yesterday. I have not had any complications, I am tolerating most foods. However I am tired of the protein shakes. Please if any of you have any High Protein Recipes to share it would be greatly appreciated. The thought of drinking another protein shake is nauseating.

I have underwent 3 esophageal/stomach surgeries in the last 2 years due to Achalasia, a disorder of the esophagus. In my last 2 operations, I was noted to have large hiatal hernias. Just 6 months ago I had a hernia repair with mesh reinforcement, but just 3 months after I was noted to have a recurrence despite the extra reinforcement that was used. We have discovered this is partly due to a spastic diaphragm. In one week, my surgeons will be redoing the repair, but with adding a bypass to reduce the risk of a repeat recurrence. I have a lower BMI of 27. Has anyone else had a similar procedure?

  36. I'm freaked. I rarely get hungry so daily I eat 500 or less calories. Is it too early to stall and what should I do?

  37. Started by passportx2 ,

I have never been a fan of popcorn. However, I always loved the smell of it. Last evening my step daughter was microwaving a bag and the smell made me seriously nauseous. In addition, this past weekend my husbands family had a reunion. One of his relatives brought some type of smoked meat. I loved smoked anything pre surgery. I had to change tables as the smell was so very overwhelming and was also making me nauseous. I am just at one month post op. Has anyone else had similar changes in smell? I knew tastes could change but I am convinced it has also affected my sense of smell.

Keep worrying that I’ll show up and I’ll have messed something up or forgotten something and they’ll cancel or postpone the surgery. Well I guess it’s official. Just checked my chart messages and I have been approved. I am super surprised how quick it was. I was sleeved 6 years ago and have complications. It took only 14 days. I had it in my mind that picking a date for surgery before getting approved didn’t make it real. Super real now! I just not sure how I feel about it. When I had the sleeve I was super motivated, studied the material they gave me, dreamed about shopping for new outfits, etc. but because I have barrett's syndrome with abnormal cells in my esophagus, I am just freaked out. So just want to see if anyone had a problem with this but I LOVE pickles! They were my favorite snack before surgery and my NUT said I can’t have a actual pickle yet but a dill pickle snow cone is fine. Problem is it gave me some serious bathroom issues like Went down fine but 20 minutes later I was having “never trust a fart” issues. What the actual heck caused that because I seriously didn’t think that would be a issue and neither did my NUT. ??‍♀️ I’m almost 4 weeks post op and on my second stage of soft foods (fish, deli meat, stuff like that). Sorry for the TMI but I’m seriously confused on what the deal was.

So I had my Gastric bypass surgery July 19th. I am currently on clear liquids and I having the worse time. I did so much research and thought I was mentally prepared for this but it is way more emotionally taxing than I ever expected. I just want to chew. I still cannot identify when I'm hungry and when I'm full. I doubt I'm eating enough. And I feel down mostly at meal time. I know I wanted this surgery for years but it's so hard.

  45. Today it’s my 11th day on liquid diet. 3 more to go and the. Monday at 6:am its my RNY. At first I had hunger pains. About 2 days ago I was light headed and had a brief headache. Today it’s so different. No hunger pains, I feel great and focussed. Like really focussed on everything that needs to be done so I have a relaxed environment once I’m back home on recovery. I’m quite OCD about cleanliness and organization so making sure everything is on point its important to me, since I will not be able to do it myself for a while. I do have a big support system and will not be alone, but if you know anyone who’s a bit OCD you know its not done properly unless we do it ourselve…
