When my husband had his RNYGB, he was advised to drink nothing but Protein shakes two weeks before surgery, and Clear liquids two days before. When I did the nutrition consult for a gastric sleeve, I was told "Follow South Beach" minus the carbs. Now, my surgeon for my RNYGB said "Vegetarian diet, with Protein Shakes." I understand liver shrinking--I just don't get all the different ways folks are doing it. Is this something that is actually standardized, or is a matter of personal preference on the part of the surgeon?

I found that mashed potatoes are my go-to food. I have taken a bite or two of a few different items but it seems like after a long day a nice little bowl mashed potatoes is just perfect. Another thing that I am discovering I really like is hot tea I was a huge sweet tea drinker before my surgery, but now I really enjoy a cup of hot tea one every few days it just seems to make my stomach feel great. Anybody else have any go-to foods or drinks that they want to share?

I had RNY 12/21 and was 218 day of surgery (pre surgery 230) and I am 175 at 8 months post op. I fear I won’t lose anymore weight. My surgeon is happy with my loss. She says she wants us to be healthy, not look like a model. Lol. But seriously I want to get to 140. Not sure how to jump start my weight loss.

Hi all. You guys are killing it with the weightloss. I am still going through the approval motions but all going well should be getting date set for early October. Which in the grand scheme of things doesn't seem so far away... One thing I am doing right now seems to be self sabotaging myself and eating ALL the food for fear of not being able to eat lime this again. Need to get some phsyc consults going before I do serious damage. Either that, or back to slimming world prior to surgery to get down a few lbs. I also have a back injury (anterior pelvic tilt)... Which makes exercising difficult. Can you all tell me how much excersise you had to do post surgery to see a di…

It's been 3 years since my gastric bypass. There has been one thing that has been on my mind and I'd like some feedback. Prior to surgery, I LOVED olives. I always had them in the house and often made olive tapenade. Since my bypass, I have zero desire to eat them. I bought a jar recently and ate just one olive. It just didn't taste good to me anymore. I suspect that the surgery changed my food preferences. Has anyone else found themselves disinterested in their old favorite foods after surgery?

1. Belly wrap or abdominal binder. Ask your doctor about this first!!! This has made a big difference for me in the first few days I only wear it when I'm getting up to do my walking as it keeps my belly from jiggling and pulling on all the suture sites. I wear it as loosely as possible for light support then I slip ice packs under it for 20 minutes when I'm done lifesaver! I should note my doctor has specifically asked me not to wear this tightly and not to wear it when sitting or sleeping. 2. Ice packs. We bought the small square gel packs I believe they also make circles. These have been fantastic for managing pain especially when I'm coming up on the end of my…

Had my revision from sleeve to bypass Wednesday Home Thursday afternoon. No problems. Abdomen feels fairly sore at times. I wasn’t crazy about drinking plain water . I had bought a pack of those sugar free mix in water drinks and also sugar free popcicles. So far so good. I had Dr Foreman and the Surgery at Crestwood Hospital. They all were fantastic.

Okay so anyone else have a complete intolerance post op with any kind of meat. My pouch doesn’t like it and I don’t care for it either. I prefer veggies and that’s about it. I’m not really getting any protein in other than the drinks which my program wants me off of. I’m over a month post op right now.

I have just had a conversation with a 2 yr middle aged sleever. She told me her Gastric Surgeon steered her towards sleeve because she said as you get much older with the bypass you sometimes can’t hold the poop and often when you’re eating it literally goes straight through you. Anyone heard or experienced this?

I made it! Overnight was a little rough, nausea being the main issue. I anticipated that, it's common for me after anesthesia. I wasnt able to start drinking yesterday due to nausea but have been doing well with it today. The most pain by far is from my umbilical hernia which ended up being very involved. But now i have a cute new belly button! Should be headed home this afternoon. Let the real work begin!

As of today, I am six months post-op from gastric bypass. In that time, I have gone from a size 34/5X to a 24/3X and lost 75.4 pounds (89.8 since Jan. 2). That is 18.3 percent of my body weight since surgery and 21.7 since January. My BMI has gone from 75.7 to 59.8. I have lost 34.2 percent of the weight I would like to lose and am averaging a loss of .4 pounds per day; that is with a stall of about a month (recently ended) when I hovered within a range of about 4 pounds. As of today, I am at the lowest weight I have been since December 2007. Hair loss started in earnest right at the three-month mark and has now slowed considerably (I don’t expect it will ever stop c…

Hey everybody. I did it, i took the leap of faith and I had the gastric bypass surgery. I can’t believe I did it, I’m still dazed and airy because of the anesthesia. But so far the pain is manageable and hopefully it will stay this way and gets better. I have lots of burping and sometimes I pass gas to relief the air in my belly , I’m just thankful. I will visit the site more often since I’m at the other side now . I was so scared and nervous before the surgery and now I’m home , life is so crazy sometimes. Please pray for my speedy recovery since I’m still a bit scared of complications and I hope you guys are all doing well. Much love from me. Xoxo

Hi All, its been a long long time since I’ve been on boards as I’m almost 5 years post gastric bypass. the surgery was the best thing I ever did and I would never change it. I did get gallstones and gave my gallbladder out but other than no complications. While i am some what happy with my weight (I’m about 50kg lighter than before surgery) , one thing I’ve noticed consistently is the frequency of how often I get sick. before my bypass I didn’t get sick often st all!! Afterwards I started getting sick way more often but the past 8 months of my last I barely make it a week without getting a new bug. I do work with children who go t…

I am scheduled to have my surgery tomorrow at 5pm and I'm concerned (or more so paranoid) about the late time. I am worried that because it's so late in the day it might get rescheduled if there are issues with earlier surgeries. This could just be my mind in overdrive because I'm nervous but has anyone had their bypass done in the evening? How long was the surgery?

Hi Everyone! I posted this similar post on a reply another post, but I thought I would start a new post. I had a gastric sleeve 3/14/2016. I had a sleeve to bypass revision on 7/30/18 due to reflux and nausea, and to try to get me closer to my goal. I am post-op 15 days. I lost 14 pounds from 1 week pre-op and 1 week post-op clear liquid diet. I started full liquids on 8/5/2018 and started pureed (Mashables) two days ago, 8/12/18. I am staying around 60-70 grams of Protein per day and about 450-650 calories. I am struggling a little bit with getting my fluids in... I'm around 50 ounces per day of Water. The day I started full liquids (actually taking in any calories…

So hard to believe it was 10 weeks ago today, we just got back from a 7 day cruise where I took baby bites of pretty much anything I wanted but I didn't overstep anything because I definitely didn't want to spend my vacation sick. I'm so happy to say I lost 4 lb on our seven day cruise which puts me at a total of 69 pounds lost in 10 weeks. I am so excited about the weight loss my surgeon seems definitely very pleased and knock on wood I haven't had any sickness I did have about a 20 to 30-minute bout with the foamies. Which was not very pleasant whatsoever and I researched it to kind of see what could have caused it. So I hope everybody is doing well good luck with every…

Hi Guys: MY big date is August 28th. It is LONG overdue, after being pushed back to get certain clearances from Pulmonology and Cardiology due to Asthma and Sleep Apnea. Can anyone relate? I saw the anesthesiologist today, and he mentioned that in recovery before I wake up they may CPAP me, but Ive had so many issues falling asleep with the mast (claustrophobic) that Im nervous thinking about them putting a mask on my face and I can't breathe. Any comforting words of advice? Been working towards this since January, so I am very anxious to get this done AND get on my way to healthier living.

I’m assuming that post op diarrhea is normal due to the stages of eating . I just had a revision from band to rny on Thursday so I’m 6 days post op. I was just discharged Sunday . I’m on stage 1 of clear liquids still and protein. I’m gassy and every gas is watery stools and constant . I’m also on an antibiotic and the side effect could be the trots . I’m sure sugar alcohol had aggravated it too. I’m just worried about dehydration happening as I’m trying to stay hydrated . I did introduce a triple zero Greek yogurt today because I’m tolerating fluid fine just being slow as instructed . I have had waters, a premier protein shake , some broth, some high protein low sugar ic…

Hi! Love you crazy kids. Anyhow. How serious is the no caffeine thing? Is one espresso really going to kill me? Had my surgery 10 days ago and I can tolerate literally hundreds of ounces of water per day. I'd be happy to drink extra water to make up for any dehydration as a result of my caffeine intake. But seriously. I need some zing to do my job. Thoughts?

So, I did have a friend back in my home state of Michigan who had her surgery in April and I've been supporting her as much as possible up until about 2 months ago. I stopped hearing from her and when my surgery rolled around - CRICKETS - . I don't NEED support because I seriously have the best family in the world and my husband is literally a superhero but it WOULD be nice to have someone to bounce things off (idea's, not balls or sharp objects) about how I'm feeling daily, new foods, etc. If anyone is in the Virginia area, hit me up please!!

If this is not the appropriate place, I totally get it. I did a quick search and didn't see any "watercooler" type discussion areas, so I figured I make a thread and we could keep the off topic chatter in here? So that being out of the way, I'm a gearhead big time. Lived in the Motor City for a while and have 0w-40 in my veins LOL. Just figured we could talk shop here. LOL "Cars and Pouches" I suppose. I'll start first. I've had 31 cars so far, no I'm not loaded, and none of them have been spectacular by any means. When you live in the midwest a fun car has to be paired with a winter/beater though. I got tired of the beater idea, so I fixed it by moving here …

It's not unusual to see people regretting the sleeve and wishing they'd gone with the bypass because of GERD, but I don't see anyone wishing they'd gotten the sleeve after they went with the bypass. If anyone out there went with RNY and wish they'd gone with VSG, I'd love to hear why you feel that way.

I realize that most people will probably gloss over this topic...because for most 1 surgery works and is enough and if you fall into this category, please know how fortunate you are. This is not my story I am 5'8. In 2007 I was 273lb's and miserable! I got a Band. Following 13 fills and unfills the best I lost was 60lb's, I never achieved restriction, and unfilled to have 2 kids. All weight returned. In an unrelated accident my port flipped, and in 2015 at 265lb's I was revised to a Gastric Sleeve (Also had my gallbladder taken out, a Haital hernia repaired and the band removed). I lost 60lb's in the first 4 months and then...stopped loosing. At 205lb's I would have…

I’m on my first full day home after surgery (which was 7/30/18). I was wondering if any other Fitbit people would be interested in having me add them on the app and invite to challenges specifically for people who are very recently post-op...I’m thinking people who had surgery in last couple weeks. Post or PM me your Fitbit email if you’d like me to add you to some daily or weekly challenges!

Nausea and vomiting are common complaints after RYGB surgery. These signs and symptoms are generally seen because of anastomotic stricture but could also be seen due to gastric bezoars. If not treated, gastric bezoars could worsen and also may lead to life-threatening complications like intestinal perforations. Always contact your bariatric team if you have concerns about anything. You know your body, but let your doctor know if certain symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting, persist. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4855426/ https://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/418490-nausea-and-vomiting-could-be-bezoars/

Hello. Just joined this group today. I had my bypass on 8/1 and am feeling a different kind of pain today. It is a tightness and pain around the main incision (not the incision itself), but only when I move or bend. If I am sitting still, I feel fine. Is this normal? Thanks for any insight.

Misconception: Most people who have metabolic and bariatric surgery regain their weight. Misconception: The chance of dying from metabolic and bariatric surgery is more than the chance of dying from obesity. Misconception: Surgery is a ‘cop-out’. To lose and maintain weight, individuals affected by severe obesity just need to go on a diet and exercise program. Misconception: Many bariatric patients become alcoholics after their surgery. Misconception: Surgery increases the risk for suicide. Misconception: Bariatric patients have serious health problems caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Misconception: Obes…

I went and saw my bariatric mid level, we had a talk about what our serving sizes should be. They want us at 1/4 a cup. Three meals, each meal is 1/4 a cup. If you do protein and a veggie, then 1/8 protein and 1/8 veggie. Is that normal for most bariatric requirements? I felt like I may have been a little over that during my soft food stages earlier on. But I eat a babybel for a snack and it's bigger than a 1/4 cup and it's a mini one. I'm just curious...

Folks. I know I come here and post every couple of days about my cravings, but I don't know what else to do. I feel like I'm going to buy a slice of pizza, take a bite and toss the rest when I'm out walking my dog. I'm legit hungry all the time and there's no way I'm going to successfully resist temptation by just gritting my teeth. It's been constant. No relief from hunger at all. Today's day 12. Also, when i eat cottage cheese or yogurt or some other tide me over fat free soft treat, my weight loss either stalls or goes up the next day. Called my nutritionist about it last Friday, she told me to drink one fewer protein shake a day so i show good numbers at my first weig…

Hi all, my first post here and really first time I'm reaching out. I need help. I had RNY in 12/2009 at 382 lbs and did great, I got down to 150 lbs even after giving birth. First it was hard dealing with the medications after having post-partum depression but after a few setbacks we were able to find the right combination of meds but then on 6/2013 I was sexually assaulted and that started the snowball that ends with all the weight I've put on. After the assault I was put on more medications and was in a car accident where I suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and now suffer from seizures. The years between then and 2016 were really bad. In the past eating was my way…
