It's not unusual to see people regretting the sleeve and wishing they'd gone with the bypass because of GERD, but I don't see anyone wishing they'd gotten the sleeve after they went with the bypass.

If anyone out there went with RNY and wish they'd gone with VSG, I'd love to hear why you feel that way.

Absolutely not. I don’t regret gastric bypass, and don’t wish I had VSG.

My surgeon presented me with both options then steered me toward the bypass. I'm glad he did. I don't think I would have been happy at all with a sleeve. GERD-potential, permanent removal of a portion of my stomach (what if the surgeon removed too much?)

The bypass isn't called the "gold standard" for nothing. What's the sleeve called? The Regret?

I originally wanted a sleeve; however, the surgeon strongly recommended a mini gastric bypass owing to my history of insulin resistance (PCOS, gestational and prediabetes). I heeded his advice; however, am now dealing with significant reactive hypoglycemia. This results from carbohydrates being rapidly absorbed causing immediate high blood sugars and then rapid reactive lows. These lows can be unpleasant and sometimes scary. I'm now on a drug that slows the absorption of carbs, but I have to take it every time I eat and there are some unpleasant side effects. So while I'm generally happy with the results of my surgery (I'm within 5 pounds of my goal), in my situation I do wish I'd gone with the sleeve.

I'm with @Missouri-Lee's Summit and as a self pay patient could pick out whichever surgery I wanted. I chose RNY Gastric Bypass because it was the "gold standard" and seemed to be the most effective in terms of high percentage of weight loss and stats of maintaining. As a binge eater, I wanted as much restriction as possible. Also, I liked the idea of a possible "reversal" and not completely removing my stomach in the event of any severe complications down the road. I have no regrets.

Pretty sure there isn't a single Bypass patient that wishes they had the Sleeve. But I know plenty of sleeves and banded folks that wish they went with the bypass.

I was banded in 2011. Kicking myself of spending 7 years dealing with that crap. SO glad I got the bypass now!

No regrets at all. I had a lot to lose and knew that Bypass was the only legit route for me.

Yep, I kept reading the same thing. Sorry you had to go through the struggle with the band but glad you're on an awesome track with RNY. Still can't get over your huge weight loss in under 4 months. Very inspiring.

The total weight loss is a combination from the band and the bypass, the site doesn't have any features for us that dealt with revision sadly. I'm still down 67 lbs in just under 4 months though... which is still cool. But revisions are typically slower to the initial drop than everyone else. I'm happy with my overall progress, even if I did have a 7 year stall with the band.

@Matt Z - 67 lbs. is amazing and truly, it's the overall and how you feel that matters. AWESOME JOB!

I had the sleeve and now have RNY. I totally regret my sleeve and wish I had gone for RNY originally

I had the band placed in 2011 just like Matt. Typical weight was 263, surgery weight was 293 (Yes, I ate a lot of bad food prior to surgery for fear of never being able to eat it again). Got down to 220, then back to 303. Was it worth it? No. Was it the band's fault? I don't think so. While there are probably 200 pounds of medical journals which show the band is not successful many years out, I still have to be responsible for part of the failure.

My mother has the sleeve. She loves it. But, I didn't want GERD and I actually wanted to get dumping syndrome to help me fight against the diabetes that runs in the family (I do not have it). I consider the sleeve like a better execution of the sleeve in that there are no bypassed segments of the intestines, and since a restrictive-only path (band) didn't work first, I didn't want to try another (albeit much better executed) method. I am only a week+ out, so I have yet to have dumping, and won't even know if I will get dumping, but at the end of the day I chose RNY over the sleeve because the "fad" (Band) didn't work, and this time, 7 years smarter, I decided to go with the gold standard as everyone mentions. I hope I made the right decision, I feel I did.

I felt a little encouraged to get the sleeve, especially since I take medication that does have malabsorbtion issues, but I was determined to go with the RNY.

At age 64 I’m happy I had my R-N-Y Bypass. My diabetes is in reverse and I went from 210lbs. at 5’6” to 160lbs. In three months.

No way! Bypass has been the gold standard for a long time (lots of long term research) I’m so happy with my choice
