So, I decided to get the surgery done back in July after seeing the before and after results of an employee at my wife’s job. He and fiancé had gotten the VSG done about a year earlier, and given my numerous failed attempts to lose weight and keep it off, I decided that this could be my solution. I went to my primary care dr for a consult and a physical. Per usual, all of my labs came back normal with the exception of my glucose screening. This was something new. My labs were always good or “normal” over the years despite my weight. According to my glucose screening, I was considered “pre-diabetic”. My blood glucose level had never been above 70, and after a 12 hr fast, …

Hi, my name is Karen and I had my bypass surgery on October 11th 2017. I had been researching various kinds of weight loss surgery for a while, first in the UK where I was born and lived until 7 years ago, and then in the US. I first looked at the band back in 2008 but the process in the UK was long and expensive and my bariatric surgeon was very unfriendly and very conceited. I had to put things on hold when we decided to make the move to the US and it took some time to get life set up here. In 2013 I broke my knee - the tibial plateau in particular, and was not allowed to weight bear for nearly 12 weeks. Of course, I packed on more pounds during that time and even …

Hi everyone, My name is Amy. I had the band on 8/24/10, I lost almost 50 pounds with the band but never reached my goal because I had a lot of problems. I kept having to have fluid put in and out, I put up with reflux WAY TOO LONG because I didn't want more fluid removed because I was gaining weight. I ended up with an esophageal ulcer and became anemic from it. I had all the fluid removed in early 2017. I am almost back to my pre-surgery weight of 256. I am very unhappy with my weight and it is making me depressed. My insurance recently approved a conversion from band to bypass. I need to wait to build up some time off at work so I am looking at sometime early …

Hello, I was sleeved October 17th. It has been far from an easy journey. I have been in the hospital more than not because of dehydration, I am still on clear liquids. Halloween I had to do a CT scan and found out I have a blood clot in my stomach, in the vein right next to my liver. I was in back in the hospital for 5 days and now home taking it easy and now on blood thinners for at least 6 months. Has anyone else gone through this? Hw 374 SW 358 CW 332

I am really upset. I didn't pass my psychological evaluation. I gotta wait a few more month until I have my surgery, but it give me time to stay on my lifestyle change. They are not saying I cant have the surgery. They are just saying I have to wait. I have to stay out of the hospital for awhile. I have been struggling with eating my whole life and I am just so excited to get it done. I am tired of dealing with the weight and its one of my biggest problems. If I can get a jumpstart on my lifestyle change, then i can do what i need to do. I just need this so much, but i can handle it. I can wait because it is worth. I was sleeved on 11/01/16 and weighed 320lbs. I have been obese my entire life and today my BMI changed to overweight. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to be overweight. My weight as of today was 185.7 lbs and I couldn’t be happier having had VSG surgery. I will be 11 months post op on 10/1 and my life has changed so much in these 11 months.

Went on a 5 day cruise and then stayed in New Orleans for 3 days after. The food was incredible but the very small portions that I ate made it wonderful. Food was everywhere but I stayed strong. After eight days I came back and had lost 7 lbs. last year this time I was 368 lbs, today I’m 239 and my surgery was May 28th.

This is just going to be a place for me to video journal my experience from the first steps to the day of surgery (fingers crossed for approval from my insurance). I hope to watch this back to help see the progress I've made at so. This is the first day, June 1st, after a meeting with my PCP, the Intake Appointment, and my endoscopy experiences with more journals to be added to this post later. https://youtu.be/LsnHsd3Hkz4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmUpGuz5Ibo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsZHlshQ5lU

I see many people discuss food relationships in post-sugery forums. While I'm scared, I know I did the right thing by taking a year in a binge eating treatment program to give me the tools & skils to be successful long-term. I will promote this every chance I get. I did not want to go thru surgery only to rebound. My program taught me how to regard food as other than a reward system or addiction. I do still need the surgery to lose the weight & control my diabetes. The program taught me to maintain and follow a plan. We all should have this training before surgery to better influence success. I will share so much more.

Just got back today from the beach. This is my first trip since losing 100lbs. I was sleeved 6/22/17. I in no way have a beach ready body but physically I felt great. I don't remember the last time I was able to walk miles on the beach without pain, being short of breath, or just uncomfortable. Had a great time and felt great the whole trip. Even got to enjoy some gulf seafood. So glad I had the surgery. Last pic was taken at my daughters wedding the day before our trip. I was sleeved 6/22/17. Recently I've had a major life changing event. Not in a good way. I wasn't aware that I was stress eating until I found myself googling how many calories are in a sleeve of Ritz crackers. I had polished off a sleeve a work on day. It was over a 10 hour span so I didn't realize I had ate the whole sleeve. (BTW it's over 500 calories ) I've lost 106 lbs but I've not lost 1 lb since this new stress has come to light. (One of my children was hurt years ago and I never knew ) all I'll say about the stresser. I've got to find a way to deal with this new info and not sabotage myself. My nerves, are shot and the first thing I turn to is my old friend food. …

I live in Tallahassee, Florida and for my authorization I needed to visit a pulmonologist. Tallahassee Pulmonary lost my referral 3 times before offering me an appointment in March (my surgery is in December so... yeah) . My surgeons office, being the super awesome folks they are, were able to get me an appointment with a pulmonologist at Shands in Gainesville (about 2 hours and 15 minutes from my house). Not a bad drive and Shands has a wonderful reputation. I went and the people were extremely nice and thorough with the tests. I think that emptying my lungs until almost passing out has been my least favorite pre-op test! I'd take the camera being shoved down my th…

Well, this is my first post on the forum. I have always came and read through the comments and looked for motivation as I go through my journey. What made me decide to get the gastric sleeve was when i had blood work done and it showed i was pre diabetic. I already had high blood pressure and a bad back, but now i am going to be diabetic. I said to myself that it was time for a change. I talked to my doctor and he recommended that I get the sleeve done. So I talked to my insurance to see if it would be covered and it was. I am now a little more than 5 months out and have lost about 92 pounds. I have been taken off my high blood pressure medication and my back is actually …

Hi all! I just wanted to post an update on my progress. I stated this journey in May and had my sleeve done in Mexico on 6/1/2017. I was a low BMIer (BMI of 34.5) and traveled to Mexico by myself for the surgery, only telling 2 people before I went because I didn't want anyone to try talking me out of it. I was terrified before making the choice to have it done and turned to this site for advice and encouragement in the days leading up to surgery! Before the surgery I was so conflicted - I was worried about making such a drastic choice and didn't know what living with the sleeve would be like. I was so afraid I'd regret it and honestly I was irrationally afraid it wo…

I just had the gastric sleeve surgery on Nov 3rd. I feel pretty good after three days, but the first day was excruciating. Very surprised @ the intensity of gas pains. I’ve added some creamy soups to the diet and it’s helped break the monotony of protein drinks. I added water & low salt bouillon to canned soup & jolted it a bit. Feeling optimistic.

I have not been on here since before my operation. Today is day 19, I think I am doing oka, the weight loss has slowed down a lot. my heaviest was 265 (my first weigh in), the day of my operation I was 240, today I am 227. I have not dumped, taking everything slowly... getting excited I get to eat food I can chew tomorrow!!! It is kinda strange, some of my friends that have had the operation said they would be there for me and I have not heard a word from them.... yet my best friend, who was against my operation from the start, spent 15 hours with me the day of my operation, and has called me every day, and text me to. so now my goal is to wake up my digestive track, I…

I had VSG on November 8th. The day of my surgery and the day after, I could not hold down even a sip of water. Of course, my mind started with the 'why did you do this to yourself" "this was an elective surgery". I did have to stay an extra night in the hospital but Praise the Lord I am home this evening the 10th. The pain in my stomach is there but bearable. When I drink water, it feels like it gets stick and burns, which then leads to vomiting. So, this evening I am working on a protein shake - gotta get 4oz per hour of liquids! I know each day will be better than the one before! So glad the surgery is over

Here's what's different from before my surgery: -All of my old clothes are way too big, so I have some new ones -I was able to buy dress boots in a regular shoe store, not in a plus-size or wide-calf specialty …

Hello everyone. I have read a lot of posts from pre-op folks nervous so I figured I️ would share my story and hopefully put some of the pre-ops at ease. I went to my first WLS seminar in December 2016. After years of yo-yo dieting I wanted a tool that will help me not just lose the weight but also keep it off. After nearly a year of Dr’s appointments, follow ups, tests and hoops to jump through. I got my surgery date at the end of August. At this point in time I was up to 294lbs, and at 5’10” the weight was really starting to wear on me. My feet and ankles were constantly swollen and my joints were really starting to hurt. For me the worst part was putting on clothing…

I had my 4 week appointment yesterday. 4 weeks to the day and was given the all clear to resume normal eating with no restrictions. Of course that doesn’t mean to go back to candy and all that other junk, but i can eat whatever I want. It’s on me to be smart about it. I started morning of surgery at 275. Four days later I was at 266.6 (8.4lb loss). One week out i was at 259 (16lb loss) and two weeks out I was at 252 (23lb loss). I’m now at 247. Total loss in 4 weeks is 28 pounds so I’m pretty pleased. 1st week was just chicken soup broth, premier protein shakes (Costco), surgar free jello, popscicles, and sugar free pudding. 2nd week, same as week o…

Good morning. The sleeved side so far has went very well, although I can't wait to stop protein shakes. My only issues are slight pain from incisions, a little dizzy, and forgetting to sip slowly. I have tons of belching/farting, loud intestinal noises, some disgusting foamies, and barium swallow diarrhea. I am not hungry, and must work hard to get protein and fluid goals - not there yet. Looking forward to full liquids next week and so on. The surgery doesn't seem real at times, not complaining about that lol.

I'm very happy with my progress. I was sleeved 6/22/17. SW 319 CW 213 GW 170. I'm almost to go and just can't believe it happened so fast. People don't even recognize me I've changed so much. Of course I'm thrilled with the compliments. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I've had no trouble with the weight loss at all. I could care less about food now. But it's the unspoken things that are rough. So get ready for TMI. in the beginning it was the gas. I was miserable. But once I got more active and learned what to avoid I've learned how to deal with that. Next is the hair loss. I have always had think curly course hair. Now it's super thin on top, falls out in ha…

On April 5 this year I had my rny. A year ago I was told that I was looking at losing 20-30 years of my life because of my insulin need and weight gain. I wasn’t even 30 yet. Now I’m 10 lbs from goal and scared to loss that much because I am just so happy were I am now. I went from a size 18 to a size 4/6 on bottom and a 2-3x on top to a small. I’ve never been this tiny and looking in the mirror is hard some days because I don’t know who I see. But overall I am so much happier. I’ve been off insulin since less than a week after surgery. My asthma is better. And generally my moods have been so much more stable. I am learning to deal with emotions and not eat them (I’ve tri…

I just had my liproscopic "Gastric Sleeve" surgery on Nov 1st 2017. This first week was rough. I stayed in the hospital for 4 days. I'm in the clear liquid diet stage, of course. I don't desire food so it's not a hard stage to go through, however keeping up with protein intake is tough. I have been in pain due to one of my incisions spitting open a little. Overall I am happy that it's over with and I look forward to this new journey, pre opp surgery weight 226lbs Height 5"6 Age 29!

Hi all, so I have a question because I'm freaking out a bit. The day off my bypass 13 days ago I went into the hospital weighing 275lbs. After surgery my weight went up 10lbs while still in the hospital which I understand is from the IV fluids and what not. However after coming home, I dropped to 264lbs and in the past three days I have gained 3lbs. I know that's not a drastic gain but I'm still concerned. Has anyone else had weight gain after leaving the hospital during the first couple weeks post op ? Sent from my Pixel using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi my name is Corrissa . I hope I can make this short . I’ll do my best ! April 2014 I weighed 232 and I had quit smoking . I gained 64 pounds . My back was the first thing I noticed that hurt . I really was in bad shape . Other issues started to happen and all I could do is cry . So I looked into gastric bypass. N found a program at Alina . I started there and weighed in at 296 . Never in my life did I think I’d weigh almost 300 pounds . So I was driving over 2 hours away for my appointments dietitian and mental health therapy etc . So I get all the way to the end of the program everyone but the THERAPIST approved me to move on to surgery . I was devastated!! I yelled a…

I want to document everything as I go, but don't want to do so in a place like Facebook where everyone I know can scrutinize my decisions. This seems like a good place. I'll be starting the two-week pre-op clear liquid diet in the morning. Dr. Illan will perform my procedure on November 4th. I can't believe it's already been a month since my surgery! It hasn't been the easiest month that's for sure, to weeks in and I was back in the hospital for a week. I was having a hard time keeping anything, liquids or solids down. I had to have an endoscopy done and it turned out that I have a hernia in my esophagus and erosion in the lining of my stomach. But I am home now and on the mend. Since the morning of surgery I've lost exactly 20lbs and a total of 37lbs since the 2 week post op diet. Sometimes I stress myself that I'm not kidding as fast as I should. But.... I'm losing and I'm on too a healthier life! Sent from my Pixel using BariatricPal mobile app

My journey involving bariatric sleeve surgery began at 450lbs. My blood pressure was in true digits, both numbers, I had diabetes, and my doctor could only guess my BMI, because the chart went to 65, and I was over 70! My legs hurt all the time, and so did my back. I could eat 100 wings in a single sitting. I ate 32 tacos at once to show off. It was killing me. Almost 2 years ago, I started the bariatric journey, with Kathy Scutella. I got to the surgery date, but had to call it off because I had just gotten a job and without FMLA I would lose it. I have up for almost a year. Then I got better insurance, and met my current PCP, Dr. Kelly Wienecke. Sh…
