My name is Robin and I am a weight loss surgery patient. I have struggled with weight my whole life. I blame it on my paternal grandmother's genes, haha! Honestly, I remember my mom always having snacks after school but she limited them to one serving. I CRAVED more! I would sneak and get toast and put sugar on it.....skip the cinnamon and go straight to the white sugar.....and now I know why it's considered as bad as cocaine! I controlled my weight by being active. BUT, when I got married right out of high school my weight started climbing. About 2 years later when my first son came I think I gave up on ME. I totally gave my family every ounce that I had. My husband woul…

Ok, so I'm here last night at the hotel in Tijuanu... Been thinking of the best way to put the whole experience down so I can really get a grasp on it. To be totally honest I researched hard for months about this surgery. Read all of the good, bad, and ugly threads. I had a very good plan going in what to ask, what to expect, how to in general handle the reality of coming to a different country to allow some random person that you only meet for ten minutes to cut me open and do the work. I am very informed on what to drink, amounts and times. How to handle my incisions and general care of my sleeve. All of that being said I was not prepared for my experience here, i…

I am 48 years old. I have been morbidly obese for about 7 years and obese for 20 years. My mother died in 2015 of diabetes and obesity related illnesses which culminated in her dying while I prayed for her in the ER at only 65 years old. My grandmother died in the same hospital of diabetic complications and an amputated foot at only 53 years old. I am a type II diabetic and was in total denial. Was not controlling my glucose levels, was not eating right, not exercising and was developing the SAME issues that my mother experienced. Both of my feet were swollen, discoloured, pressure blisters and red dots all over them from poor circulation and diabetic neuropathy. I had …

Hi, Everyone! I have started blogging about my weight loss surgery journey. The hardest thing about preparing for surgery, for me, has been the mental preparation for social situations. While I have no problem discussing the surgery with my family and friends, it's acquaintances, neighbors, employers, clients, etc that I worry about. This isn't an invisible surgery. People are going to know that something is going on when I very quickly lose half my body weight! And they are going to have questions and comments. They are probably going to be well-meaning---I think most people are very well intentioned. But I am still trying to prepare for how to respond. I'm afraid o…

Today I am one week post-op. Down 10.4 lbs since morning of surgery. No gas pains, just a little bloating and its getting better with Gas-x. Still on full liquids for another week, and not even missing solid food. Who would have thought I would not be hungry. WOW. Time for a protein shake.

After 30 years of failure I had RNY Gastric Bypass in December 2014. After losing 250lbs I completed the 2016 NYC Marathon and learned a lot about who I am, my issues with food, and how surgery finally gave me the tool to success... but not without some serious hard work! I’ve been a inspirational speaker about my weight for the past couple years and I’ve blogged for well over a decade and I finally put my experiences in a book! I know everyone here understands the battle that happens with weight and self and if you were interested in reading my book I’d greatly appreciate it! www.foodsweatandfears.com thank you!!!

Hey, I was kind of reluctant to share my story but, I think it’ll be good for me. I’m 2 weeks and 5 Days post-op. I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on 9-19-17. I spent two nights in the hospital. When decided to have gastric bypass surgery I was 331 lbs. The day of surgery I was 311 lbs. I am currently 297. Surgery actually went fine and there were no complications. I was in pain but that’s normal right after surgery. When I came home, again I was in pain but I was given hydrocodone for relief. As the pain started to go away I was able to do more. I was walking fine, getting out of the house, just simply getting back to my normal routine. Eating was a little difficult at fi…

Since post - op i am 28lbs down, weight loss is on stall. Not a very good progress. I started eating everything but very very less sugar. No cheese and less oil. I ear crabs but not too much. If i drink Water after eating, i throw up everything. That happens once every few days when i can't resist having water. I feel super hungry but mentally and even before i have 2 3 bites i feel full. And that's not a worry thats how it is supposed to be but not having good weight loss is making me go crazy. Have not started work out yet. 1.5 week back i had a normal checkup with my family doctor and he said not to start gym not even cardio for 10 more days because to hernia. I will …

As I start my weight loss journey I get very emotional I've suffered from depression since I was 11 I am now 24. I spend from ages 12 to 18 in state custody. I survived many many suicide attempts due to being bullied about my weight. I now have 3 precious kids. She's 4, 3, and 1. I've got so many health problems due to my obesity. Liver, heart, and muscle problems. I'm 24and I weigh 310 pounds. I look in the mirror everyday and I'm disgusted at the person I've become. About 6 months ago I was told about gastric bypass for weight loss. I was scared at first but I've got my first appt set for August 1st. I know this is gonna be a long journey but I'm so so happy to …

Hello there, I want to share my story and see if anyone can relate. I actually emailed my physician recently and think it will be easier to simply paste it and then we will talk about his response. Dear Dr., Where do we go from here? I am simply exhausted from the Dr’s visits, ER visits, and it has been nothing but one thing after another since the surgery. Just as a reminder since I only get to see you when we are scheduling another surgery, I want to revisit what a horrible experience this has been. Initial surgery done Feb 2017 for the first few months felt like someone who had just had surgery, and nothing was happening that I deemed out of …

Well I did it. Yesterday they did the gastric sleeve operation at 7:30am. When I arrived for checking they did some paperwork that allowed the hospital to bill my insurance, then they took me back to pre-op. In pre-op they had me strip down and put on a gown. I didn't have any valuables with me but that is when they would have taken them and put them in the safe. A gentleman came in and started the IV. Another nurse came in and was asking me about what I had to eat and drink prior to the surgery date. Then I met the nurses that would be assisting the surgeon. They gave me a shot of blood thinner to protect from blood clots. I met the anesthesia person, he aske…

Hello everyone! Been watching this forum for a while but this is my first post. Had my VSG on June 28,2018 and had a terrible ordeal (enlarged liver, surgeon found a hernia and had to repair it, extreme vomiting for 2.5 days straight in the hospital, and severe dehydration because I was too afraid to swallow anything but my own saliva). But I made it through! 8 days post-op today and I've been on nothing but broth, Jello, ice chips and popsicles and I'm sick of it! I also have a lot of the air/gas they put in me for the procedure and it's like a every 10-20mins painful surge that goes thru your stomach and chest, like contractions or something, and I just have to brace my…

Hi! My name is Melissa. I’ve debated whether I should post or just remain a lurker... but here I am! Everyone here is so great and supportive, I figured it would only help me if I joined y’all. I have been overweight for literally my entire life, and have never been able to keep a significant amount of weight off for long. I have no co-morbidities, but I do have PCOS. I’m 5’4’’ with a weight of 279 currently. I’m having my gastric sleeve surgery Monday the 25th!!! I’ve been on a liquid diet since last Monday and have not cheated once, so I’m super proud of myself. I really wanted a whataburger yesterday haha. I wish you all the best of luck!

I am 6 weeks post op as of today. I weighed 280 pre-op. And today I weigh 245lbs. I must say, the roughest patch of this process post op is discovering that you still crave all the foods you were used to eating and can no longer enjoy them as before. This is one huge challenge. I still stick to the protein shakes and in between try new foods. The ones which are hard to take in...I will try in another 30 days. The best side effect is I can move better, walk further and now I’m running. What a great feeling! The vitamins are key and protein get them all in.

I'm pre-op, have been going through the process since Feb. I am 19 lbs away from a 40 BMI. After multiple tests to see if I have one of the very specific co-morbidities that my insurance requires, it turns out I do not. I feel like the wind got knocked out of my sails (or whatever that expression is). I am 19 lbs away from not needing a comorbidity. 19 lbs. Has anyone heard of anyone gaining weight in order to meet the insurance requirements? I mean, I've *been* steadily gaining weight over the years, so I know I will get there eventually. Im just tempted to eat more bacon now.

Hello, So I got sleeved May 29, 2018. Im almost 2 weeks post op. I was out on a Clear liquid diet for 2 days and then started my Full liquid diet afterwards (June 1st) it’s Day 13 of my New journey and so far I’ve had no struggles with my liquids. In fact I’m a little nervous because I had a few soups that had little pieces of vegetables and chicken. I should have blended it and instead I didn’t. I ate about 5-8oz, is this too much? I haven’t had any full restrictions yet. My worry is that I’m eating too much. I plan on just drinking the broth until my full 2 week full liquid plan is over. (Thursday) I’ve been able to get 64+ oz a day. I usually drink 2 premier protein sh…

So I have two reasons for wanting to write about my experience: 1) When I was looking for information on Low BMI'ers, and I mean really loooow I came up with very little and really nothing about Sleevers with BMI's as low as mine. I am sure I will get some flack for having this surgery at such a low Bmi, but we're all on our own journey, and trollers are gonna troll. I am 33 years old. On Sleeve day my height was 5'6 & 3/4 inches and weight, I estimate, was about 183 lbs. I say estimate, because the last time I got on a scale was a week before going to Cancun (179 lbs) and I spent 2 days in Cancun vacationing. Okay so at the most my BMI was 28.7. Not only that but…

Hello fellow weight loss friends! I have decided to capture a little bit about what I have been through, and my progress through through the sleeve process. I also thought it might be helpful for those of you transitioning between band and sleeve to have some info about what feels the same and what feels different. I am also, selfishly, wanting to capture some of the feelings and emotions I have had around the success and subsequent failure of my band while it is so fresh in my head. This is not meant as a complain session, but a reminder of all the reasons I NEVER want to weigh 360 pounds ever again! In April 2009, I had a successful Lap Band surgery, and was able …

I'm feeling really proud tonight. The first picture was taken a few days before my surgery on 7/7/17. The pic in the black dress is from today. This was an old dress I'd given up hope on ever wearing again. I'm not quite where I want to be in it yet (or maybe it just feels weird being so 'exposed' in a dress), but I felt really proud of this NSV and wanted to share it gets easier, with each passing day. Hey everyone, I’m nine months post gastric sleeve operation. I’ve lost 70 pounds, my goal is to lose another 15. Lately it’s been very hard to stay on track and eat right, since it’s much easier to eat now. I can eat anything, and I don’t know when to stop. I’ve heard A lot of stories of people that have lost A lot of weight, and then gained everything back. I’m terrified that that’s gonna happen to me. I feel like I’m doomed, most people I know that did the surgery have gained some weight back. Any advice? X Btw, I’m so thankful that I’m able to share my thoughts With you guys, and read some of yours. Thank you, much love.

Finally decided to post after 16 months after my surgery! It sure has been an interesting ride. I can say that most weight loss is attributed to what happens in the kitchen more than in the gym. However, working out sure makes you feel a lot better! I also had tummy tuck and removal of about 10-15lb of skin in December 2017, about 10 months after surgery. I started at 350lb, Surgery weight was ~325lb, Tummy Tuck was at ~195 and my one year mark in February has kept me at about 175lb. 13 months after my surgery, I had to get gall bladder removed because I was having ugly gall bladder attacks and they found several stones. They attributed it to severe weight loss in small a…

Hi everyone, I was banded 10 years ago and have been a member here since then. I am still maintaining my weight despite having the band removed which I know is unusual. As a result I have developed a real interest in what happens to people's identity following all types of bariatric surgery, so much so that I am formally researching this issue as a Masters level student pre PhD in Psychology. I experienced some really interesting changes as a result of my surgery and have seen many people have struggles and succeed over the years. I think understanding that process better may help others - including support services, to navigate their journeys, through what can be an…

Well, as the title suggests I've been a member of the form for a while but just as a reader I haven't posted anything yet. I figured it was time to post my story so I could get some feedback, and possibly a little guidance. My journey started about a year ago when I had made the final decision to go ahead with the gastric sleeve. I was very confident in my surgeon and was excited about the surgery. As per protocol, he did and endoscopy beforehand and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I had my sleeve gastrectomy done on August 28th 2017. Almost immediately, I noticed what I would call an agonizing amount of pain and extreme gastric reflux. This was before I …

Hello, I am currently 56 years old. I started this journey to Bariatric Surgery 1 yr ago when I was told that I had Chronic Kidney Disease. I never thought of myself as a big guy, but people all the time said to me that I was a big guy. When I was told that I had CKD my kidney GFR was only 28. The Dr told me that I would be on dialysis within 5 years. That's when I started taking my health seriously. I looked into my options and found that Bariatric Surgery had a lot of health benefits besides weight loss. I also have diabetes, high blood pressure, in addition to the kidney disease. I had also had a stroke when I was 50 years old and was determined to resolve my health …

So, it has been a while since I've been active in this community, but I just wanted to share my story and my current struggle with regain. I still feel like having VSG WLS (March 2013) was the best decision of my life. I remember the first year -- the "honeymoon phase" -- when the weight just flew off! It was definitely a major adjustment, having such positive feedback from friends and family. Honestly, I hated the attention I was getting, because I felt like I "cheated" having the procedure. When people asked how I lost the weight, I usually tried to avoid telling them about the surgery, but I'm naturally and honest over-sharer, so I forced the words "weight loss surgery…

Hi all! I’ve been stalking this app for a while now, but didn’t post much until yesterday since I finally was approved. I just want a place to document my journey and I thought this might be the right place. Today is my second of 13 days of my Optifast diet. Yesterday was really rough. I was head hungry and physically hungry. It switched around all day long. It wasn’t helpful that I manage an escape room and all the guys were bringing in fast food to eat all day in the back room where most of my work is done. I’m currently on Metformin, Glipizide and Victoza for diabetes. I felt really shaky quite a few times during the day. I was able to test my BG one time before my m…

I’ve been lurking awhile, but I decided the other day to create an account with the intention of posting, but I easily get distracted and didn’t. I’m doing it now though because I’m just super stoked that I’m down 18lbs! I’ve been struggling the last several years, yo-yo-ing and could never lose more than just a couple of pounds and dumb water weight. It was time I take back my life and feel good about myself again. I turned into a hermit, only leaving the house for work travel. It was sad and it sucked because I remember enjoying going out and seeing friends and doing stuff. Anyway, all has been going well. I’ve been able to add mushy chunks to my meals now. But I’m hav…

Well, it's a start alright... the finish has yet to come. But I'll document my sleeve story here in the hopes that it'll help others. Surgery to lose weight? Peh!! That's for weaklings... I would never mutilate my body.... why take the easy way out... in short, wls was a remote concept to me. Honestly, it just never was on my radar, that's all. But like many here I struggled.. and it was a constant battle in the back of my head. I've been everywhere on the spectrum from "a real woman has curves, damn it" to " this is a social construct; it's todays world that makes me feel bad about who I am... I mean look at norms from 50-60 years ago" to "I don't have to be thin/normal/…

My journey began by yo-yo dieting. If there was a diet, I tried it, Weight-Watchers numerous times, Jenny Craig Twice, Nutri-system Twice, Low-Carb, Keto and at least I kid you not 30 other diet attempts! Oh, I forgot the best one! HMR, weight-loss shakes under medical care, I lost 200 pounds or more on that one! It was great and I kept my weight off for SIX years but old poor eating habits crept back in. Which brought me to 2012 and Dr. Steiner at St. Joe East in Lexington, Ky performed a Bariatric Sleeve. I did everything they told me, Everything! A remember waking up from surgery and it hurting like hell! Of course, they cut half my stomach OUT and threw it…
