POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by cakeface,

I'm just over 3 months post op. I'm supposed to be eating a cup of food at each meal and 2 Snacks per day. I cannot get in the cup of food. More like a half a cup and not a crumb more or I'll puke and then I don't feel well for at least a half hour to 45 minutes after I eat. It's been like this since I started eating regular food. Doesn't matter which food it is, hot or cold, or if I eat it slow or fast. The result is always the same. Will this improve for me eventually?

Hey everyone, I need some advice and just general tips & tricks for how to cut out a bad habit such as grazing. I am 6 months out and I've been very good with eating well post-op, I track everything I eat and keep my calories and carbs minimal, but grazing has been the one bad habit I can't seem to kick. I don't go crazy though, I always eat clean and when I graze it'll be on 2-3 almonds, a small sliver of chicken, or some spoonfuls of salad, definitely not cakes or Cookies or chocolates. But I know the calories eventually add up so it's a habit I want to get rid of. I track and weigh absolutely everything else I eat for my regular meals and Snacks on myfitnessp…

Today I am 2 weeks post op and I walked ONE mile. I thought about quitting at 1/2 mile but realized my legs didn't hurt. I wasn't sweating like a pig. I wasn't dying to breathe. I am now sitting in my car tearing up bc I walked ONE mile. This surgery is saving my life and I am so grateful.

I just tried on the size 44 Old Navy shorts that are leftovers from when I lost 100 lbs. with Weight Watchers when my son was born 14 years ago. They fit perfectly. What's interesting is that I've lost just over 150 lbs. this time yet my waist is the same size as -100 was back then. Both starting weights were about the same. I've lost about 14" in my waist. The difference is my arms and legs. Back then, losing slowly while exercising like a madman, I didn't lose a lot of muscle. This time, thanks to 2 months in a hospital bed, I had a lot of muscle-wasting. My legs and arms are so skinny now that I barely recognize them. Basically, this means that I've lost about…

I have been trying to be diligent getting in my three 1/2 cup purée meals and 2 protein drinks however I have been missing about 1 meal and 1 protein drink because anything I put in my stomach in the morning hurts! I take my meds and have water and then the pain usually deters me until about 11. I am getting between 300-400 calories a day and when I eat all I'm supposed to be it's around 500-600 (is this too much 2 weeks post op)

  12. I am only drinking very limited amounts because it's so painful to drink. When the liquid goes down it hurts so badly. I have been to the ER and the bloodwork shows no sign of bleeding internally. Everything looks good according to the numbers except for dehydration. Is this normal? It's so painful to drink I don't want to take another sip. By painful I don't mean painful to swallow. I mean painful once it gets down my throat and heads to the stomach, it feels like knives stabbing me.

I am just a little over 12 weeks post op now, and I am able to eat everything. However, I have not eaten breads, pasta, sugar, rice or processed foods in general, since December. I have also not had any caffeine since December. I have to say that I feel fantastic! I am doing my Beachbody workouts EVERY day, and I am loving the progress that I am making. My husband and I went on a cruise 2 weeks ago, and it was an interesting experience post op. I stuck to protein and avoided adult beverages, but I did allow myself to splurge on a small ice cream cone. It was strange watching people pile up their plates with food at the buffet, sometimes multiple plates, and I had absolute…

Hi guys! I had gastric sleeve surgery on December 29, 2016, so almost 3 months ago! So far, best decision I have ever made (and I don't think anything could change my opinion!!). Everything has been great. I'm sticking to my SUR's and NUT's instructions of soft foods and 60-80 grams of Protein with 64 oz of hydrating fluids per day. I have adjusted well to the smaller portions. I was worried about this, because I tended to overeat and snack late at night. I'm still working on eating earlier and trying not to graze at night when I am home. I also exercise 5-6 days a week for at least an hour, which is mainly cardio and some strength training. I feel amazing; I al…

Is it normal to experience swelling after the initial swelling has subsided? Today marks my 5 week mark and last night/this morning I noticed swelling in my upper right abdomen. It's also very warm - I don't have a fever or nausea or vomiting though. I did email my doctor but I'm slightly concerned.

Hi Everyone - I had sleeve surgery done on Monday, April 3rd, so I am two days post op. I'm feeling pretty good but am having pain/pressure when I drink. Just tried to eat a popsicle but it was painful. I think that I'm having trouble with cold drinks. Seems like I do better with room temp or heated drinks. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and look forward to the support found here.

My doctor had me do Clear liquids the first day post op, then come home on soft foods and he told me to progress as I felt comfortable. I'm 10 days out and I'm eating normal (haven't tried red meat or pork), making healthy choices, and trying my best, but I see all these other people on 3-6 weeks of liquid and I'm wondering if my doc is a quack! Anyone else have a doc like mine???? My weight loss is at 30 lbs in 10 days, just FYI.

I had surgery a little over a month ago. Five years ago, prior to my surgery, I was healthy, fit, trim and not overweight. My thyroid is what made me gain a ton of weight (140lbs) in the last few years and I ended up having VSG. Well, I thought because I was never heavy prior that my skin might bounce back after this surgery or somewhat and it's not. (I know it's quite early still) but I'm curious.... Is there anyone out there who may have had something similar to this and after time, your skin bounced back a bit? I have lose skin between my legs and not to sound gross or dramatic, it looks like I have a 2nd vagina. I just bought shapewear to hide this, but this is re…

Hi! I don't know if I'm just panicking or if it is normal, but sometimes when I have been sitting for quite a while when I stand and stretch into a normal standing position I feel I slight tugging/pulling sensation in my lower abdomen--it is a good 4-5 inches away from one of the laparoscopic scars I have on my lower right side. I tried googling it and all I can find is that it is either gas, or a stretched/strained muscle healing. It does feel similar to when you have a strained calf muscle and it sort of wiggles around until it heals, but it is still making me stress. I'm just hoping that others have felt it too, and I'm not experiencing some sort of detached intes…

I am 4 weeks post op tomorrow. I have lost 18 lbs since surgery and my weightloss is not the issue. I feel hungry. I hate the hunger feeling. I keep reading about others that don't even want to eat/drink. I get 64 oz water, I eat 700 calories and I feel sometimes like that isn't enough. I have eaten 800 a few times. I am still losing, so I am wondering if I am the only one? I have found no intolerances, I eat 6-8 oz at each meal. I take my vitamins, I get one vegetable, one fruit, one starch and at least 70 protein each day. I start my soft foods tomorrow. Does anyone have any insight to this?

Hello everyone, I had Lapland surgery February 10th, had my first fill March 16 (1.5cc), I was feeling restriction in the beginning but now I'm able to eat a little more and not feeling much of a restriction. I only eat about twice a day, but I'm worried I damaged my pouch during the post op care (ate solids a little too soon). I don't have pain, no vomiting or nausea. I only lost about 1-2 pounds since the last fill. One day I'm 210, the next I'm 211.5, then back to 210 and today I'm 209.5. It's driving me crazy. Am I over thinking this? I'm going in for a second fill next week. Sent from my SM-N910T using BariatricPal mobile app

Soooo, as someone that had thick gorgeous hair before surgery with no hair loss, my life is sucking right now. I was losing it since about 5 weeks but now (@ 3 months out) it's horrible! My hair is starting to come out by the handful and there is hair all over my house! It's so embarrassing to shed constantly in public so I've been keeping my hair pulled up in a loose bun most days. Then my salon recommended the Paul Mitchell tea tree line so I got it. It's supposed to help with fallout and thickening. I've not been using it long but it makes my hair look so much fuller! Haven't noticed a difference in the shedding yet, but I've not been using it long enough to give it a …

I've found that I can eat almost anything, even fats and sweets, and I can't decide if this is a blessing or a curse. From my research it sounds like only about 30% of RNY patients experience dumping. Now, bear in mind, I watch my portions carefully, I'm not binging or stretching. I concentrate on getting my proper nutrients and eating well. What I mean is that I can have a bite of birthday cake, or suck on peppermint lifesavers... stuff like that. I've purposely stayed away from a lot of stuff that I suspect might trigger my guts (pizza, fried food, pastas). I eat the same thing for dinner that the rest of my family is eating most nights, I just eat a very tiny amou…
