POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by Mrs.fastbug,

I had my sleeve Wednesday, April 19th. My pain meds aren't working and make me unable to sleep. When I drink it feels as if it's stopping just before it goes down into my stomach. Then I feel it go down and I have pain and rumbling when it gets into my stomach. Is this normal? How can you get rid of the gas that occurs when I drink....other than burping. Also, at what point do you get concerned that you have not yet had a bowel movement? Thanks! Sent from my VS990 using BariatricPal mobile app

Has anybody experienced a food coma or as it is probably called Postprandial somnolence after eating with the sleeve? I have never experienced this even in my most obese state. Since my surgery six weeks ago, if I eat to limit of my sleeve, I could probably take a nap immediately afterwards. It doesn't matter if it is a carbohydrate or a diet shake. Anybody else have this experience?

  6. Hi y'all I'm Ashley and new here. I got my sleeve about a month ago. Been following all the instructions as warranted but I'm still dealing with a good amount of pain. Still have pain in the "where my stomach was taken out" which I figured would stay around for a bit. Now I have new pain. It was so bad I went to the ER. They said I'm all clear which my dr was surprised. He thought surely he'd fine a leak. So thankful he didn't. Anyway I guess my question is is anyone still dealing with pain?? Even a month out?? When did it finally go away??

I am 8 days post sleeve and have managed to walk around the block daily the past 3 days. I read on this forum, which by the way is very helpful, thanks, about people walking a mile, 2 miles etc. I feel as though I am lagging behind. I still have quite a bit of pain when I move, and usually need 2 naps a day. I can't imagine being back at work, although I see some people return to work after a week. I am just starting blended food and have met my fluid and protein goals from the start. Do I sound like I'm behind in the walking department?

So I guess I'm not technically eating soft foods before I'm supposed to because my doctor told me to baby my stomach and if I felt like I was comfrotable to move from pureed foods to soft foods then no one knows my body better than me. I chew it up really good to where its almost like a pureed consistancy in my mouth and then slowly swollow small pieces. It hasnt been hurting my stomach but sometimes I feel it going down and it feels really weird, sometimes my chest starts hurting but it goes away and occasionally I'll start burping immediently afterwards, but I'm proud of myself. I got some turkey pinwheels from walmart and took the tortilla part out so now its just meat…

I'm 3 1/2 weeks out from my surgery and I find that I'm having trouble getting all of my required water in. For those of you who are super successful in drinking 64oz or more of water per day, I'd love if you shared your schedule of how you manage drinking all of that damn water! Lol I just started soft foods so it's making it harder for me, time wise, to consume enough water now that I have to incorporate the 30mins before/after food rule. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This is an open forum where we should be able to express our goals, accomplishments, and failures. Berating someone because of what they ate is extremely unhelpful. Instead we should try not to judge. Not one of you is perfect or you wouldn't be here in the first place.

  17. Looking for suggestions about how to deal with this hollowed out feeling of hunger I am experiencing six days post-op. My surgery was on 4/18 (Tuesday) and have experienced some ups & downs with nausea, which I still need meds to deal with. However, my actual pain experience is getting better every day. I'm back home and my largest issues seems to be hunger, which I totally didn't expect. My doctor wants me to stay on a full liquids diet until day 7 & then easing into pureed food, so I've been following those directions. I hit approximately 60 grams Protein yesterday & have been careful about making sure that I'm getting at least 48 oz in daily liquid…

  18. I'm four months post op and now and have lost 50 pounds and my projection is to lose 20 more as I started out at 220 before surgery. My question for those of you that have gone through this is with another 20 expected to lose, should I buy clothes a size smaller for summer. Reason I'm asking is that I'm obsessed now with shopping being that I'm so much smaller and just bought 8 pairs of awesome pants from Ann Taylor (and they are not cheap) but some are capris for warmer weather. I'm thinking I should take some back and get a size smaller. Thoughts?

I was sleeved on April 20 - on day 3 post op now. Going well, haven't had much pain or any problems, just uncomfortable gas every time, which I am sure is to be expected. However, I have found that having my liquid meals standing up/walking around is the only way to relieve the gas and actually burp. So now I eat standing up! Anyone else doing this and how long I might expect to be doing this for??

Hi there. I had my gastric sleeve op on the 13th of April. I lost 7kgs on the shake diet and then another 2 whilst in hospital. I have been home for a week now and there has been no loss on my scales at all. It is a bit disheartening but I am wondering if it could be because my body is retaining the fluids. Has anyone else had the same experience and if so, did this change once you went onto the 'mushy' (for want of a better word :-) ) diet.

I had my sleeve surgery in May, 2016. I've now lost 164lbs and am finding it is very painful to sit, even long enough for a meal in a restaurant. Unfortunately, I was nearly immobile prior to surgery so I am not yet strong enough to not sit much of the time. My tailbone is sore most of the time and I'm finding it is painfully difficult to even ride a recumbent bicycle. Does anyone else have tailbone pain? Any suggestions?

I got the okay to start some light cardio at the gym on Monday, which is great because although I am walking and working I just feel kind of stir crazy still. However before surgery I was seeing a trainer and lifting so how long did you guys wait to use things like smith machines and stationary machines? Or did you find that different workouts were better/worse post op? Before I had my band removed sit up and crunches always hurt.. hopefully not expecting that with the bypass. Thanks!

Example, I can eat entire yogurt in one sitting. I also seem to be able to take decent size of sips at one given time. I would love to hear from others. Is this normal?

  38. I've had my Lap-Band 8 years this May and just recently started having gallbladder issues - severe indigestion, nighttime throw-up (unless my stomach is completely empty), and intense back/side pain after eating. I just had an ultrasound and the doctor confirmed that it is my gallbladder. I'm concerned that all of these problems have aggravated my band since I have been throwing up a lot recently. My question is this: Should I ask about replacing the band with a sleeve or gastric bypass when they remove my gallbladder?

I'm worried that I am eating too much and gaining so soon after surgery. I started tracking calories yesterday and to my surprise, I was able to eat 1300 calories. From everything I read that sounds like too much. But I stuck to the diet and only ate when I was hungry. Yesterday I had a protein bar, soup, ground beef and scrambled eggs.
