I have not been eating protein bars yet, but decided to give it a try for convenience. Typically I have been eating straight protein like chicken sausage and protein shakes for snack. So I wandered over to my bariatric pantry to check out the offerings. There are so many different kinds! Pre-op I was mostly a caramel type person, but don't know if the same is true post-op. I want to shoot for high protein ( at least 25 g), low fat and low carb with a reasonable amount of calories. I am not sure if 250 calories is too much ( given general protein gram to calories) conversion). I try and eat very cleanly throughout the day because I am still honeymooning the sleeve at 3 mon…

What is everyone's thoughts on egg whites versus whole egg? I'll be started them next week (can't wait!) & would appreciate any feedback. Is is wrong to not use the egg whites only? Thanks so much...

Serious question & please don't answer 'my nut' or 'my doc' said so. We have all been told to switch from carbonate to citrate after our surgeries & that we can't assimilate carbonate as well as citrate. BUT the surgery I chose was not to disrupt my G.I. tract, so if carbonate was acceptable before, what makes it different now? I understand the need for sublingual B-12 as there is less stomach lining, but I just don't have a handle on why the citrate--not to mention I have a lot of the carbonate left from pre-sleeve, LOL!

My boyfriend just walked in the door with 2 chichiron pupusas with the spicy pickled cabbage and tomato salsa. I can't wait until I can have just a few bits. I told him not today (I'm almost 2 weeks post-surgery) but maybe in a couple of months I can have a few bites. For those of you who don't know what a pupusa is - it's a Salvadorian delite. It's like a thick corn tortilla stuffed with a variety of ingredients - sometimes chichironnes (pork skins), cheese and Beans, sometimes shrimp, or chicken or loroco (some kind of Central American herb) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pupusa

So, my wife had her surgery and came out ready to go, but all she wants to eat is mashed potatoes, because the liquid diet was so blah she doesn't want anything from it, besides a protein shake. I need ideas to make her some food that tastes good but isn't a straight liquid for the next couple weeks. Thanks. couple

I see a lot of posts about protein in cottage cheese, so I bought some yesterday. I've always had in in a dessert, so I thought I'd try it plain, nastiest stuff I've ever tasted. How can you guys eat that stuff? What are you putting in it to make it taste good? Fruit? I'm type 2, so I limit my fruit to one banana in my morning shake.

Went to my family doctor today for checkup. She was the one to recommend the sleeve to me. I love her! She was pleased with my weight loss. Down from 1st visit to WLS (which was 250 and then day of surgery I was 222, today (5 weeks after sleeve), I weigh 207. Smiles all around. She said I am not getting enough calories. I have been averaging 400 calories a day. She said it should be 1000. She said not to pay that much attention to sugar right now. Of course she did not mean candy,, cookies and cake, etc. She suggested I add more fruit and try to eat more small meals. I'm going to try ... but i get full so fast and it takes me about an hour to finish my protein shakes. Any…

Does anyone have a list of specific protein bars that are ok/recommended after sleeve? I'd like to get some to keep at work incase I get stuck but I know they can vary wildly in quality. Whole brands are helpful, but if someone has specific flavors they would recommend that's also great.

I was searching for ideas for post-surgery diet and came across this cookbook on Amazon for about $10. Not that I loved all the recipes, but it started me thinking how to alter some favorites to suit my needs and stay on plan. It progresses from liquids to pureed etc. Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery by: Patt Levine and Michele Bontempo-Saray Figured I would share.

Hello, wanted to ask what protien shakes you guys like best. I've been drinking the GNC whey protein 120 calories & 20g of protein. At first it tasted ok. But now its to the point I hate it. I added a piece of banana to it and it was great!!!(not sure if I'm even allowed to do so) So what flavor do you drink? Why do u like it? I hate drinks that have an after taste! Any recommendations???? And also fyi I found sugar free crush strawberry, grape, Orange, pineapple & squirt & Dr.pepper packets. Just like crystal light but better!!! 5 calories & sugar free (bought them at dollar general)

I just got sleeved Sept 25th and made it home 2 days ago. I am on a clear liquid diet and the only thing I can tolerate is nectar Protein powders, Water, and sugar free Popsicles. All broths make me nauseous. I could eat it before surgery, but the day after I couldn't anymore. I know I should follow the surgeons strict guidelines for eating over the next few weeks, but I am worried that I am not going to get enough protein this first week. My willpower is getting pretty shaky and if I could just make it to Tuesday, then I can have cream Soups, milk, and yogurt. I guess the question I am asking is honestly, how soon can I start that next phase? Do I really need to wai…

I've been drinking 2 protein shakes a day as meal replacements & eating a sensible dinner, but I have to say that I'm still hungry after drinking the shakes drinshshakes.

I know calcium citrate absorbs better than calcium carbonate, but is it really a big deal which one you take? I have both, but have been taking calcium carbonate for the last 2 months. I like the taste and consistency of the sugar free ones from costco. They are cheap too. These chews are pretty much where I get my daily calcium from(some from shakes also). I take 6 a day to satisfy NUT requirements.

Hi folks, I am hoping to have surgery in January. I need to lose 15 lbs before the surgeon will give a surgical date. I need to lose this weight! My schedule is hectic and I have been really good about planning my meals; keeping to 900-1000 cal/day and starting at the gym(topic for another post). However on Tuesday nights (tonight) I leave work at 5:30, Gym till 6pm drive to volunteer work for 7pm and not home until 9-9:30 pm. I eat lunch at 12:30, snack at 3:30-4pm, by 6pm I am ravenous. I drive by no less than 6 fast food places and one grocery store one the way to the volunteer work. I need suggestions for what I can buy at the supermarket that I can eat while …

I had a muscle milk today that was banana cream flavored. It made me very nauseas for at least 30 minutes. This is the second time I had tried one of these, same flavor. First one was about 5 weeks post op and I was fine with it. Now I really didn't like it much at 11 weeks. Has anyone else had this problem? I am a little bummed because banana creme used to be absolute favorite flavor pre-op, especially in yoplait light.

I am new but am scheduled for Monday, October 8. I am 50 have uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, PTSD, hypothyroidism, and lumbar back pain. I am 5'3" and weigh 235. I was first told get the sleeve but now the (Dr) Dr. Chang says complete Gastrc Bypass. My insurance doesn't pay for this. The sleeve is cheaper but as I understand it with all my health problems and medications the Full Bypass will be best for me. Please anyone who knows about this fill me in. I am on information overload without answers to the important questions. I need to do what is best for my health but $20,000.00 is So Much! Thanks.............Tammy

At my 3 month post op apt this morning my Dr ask how much I'm eating at meals/snacks....I tell him 3 oz and he asks how I know how much it is....I told him I either weigh or measure everything unless at a restaurant (not often) and then I just make a good guess....usually full before finishing what I've measured out anyway. He says not to be weighing but be using the measuring cups b/c its about the volume.....how is 1/4 cup not the same as 2 ozs?? I'll start doing it that way I'm just confused....the best part.....down 92 lbs!!! Yay!!!

It was heaven to finally start this stage, after just Protein shakes! And then after a day or two I was kind of sick of it... but then I came to actually really enjoy it, lol. I know rules are protein first, and then veggies - but being that I very strictly measure and portion, and don't ever have a problem getting both in - I have started blending them together. It tastes SO much better to mix the flavors, and I find that the veggies keep the meat more moist - without having to add sauces and such. Anyone have any recipes they loved for this stage? I've been trying to fit my meals into what the family's having - like, when it's Spaghetti Night, I throw a chicken…

I heard that breads and doughs will get stuck or they will be difficult to swallow, but is there ever a point where I'll get past this? I'm 3 weeks post-op and I feel weak with the diet and more light headed and dizzy than ever before, which is keeping me from working my second job. I know I'll be able to eat different foods later on, but jello, apple sauce, tapioca, popsicles, cream of wheat and mashed potatoes are getting on my nerves! I've never had this much sweet food in my life!
