I am scheduled for surgery on the 17th of November. After being scheduled week before last, it didn't seem real to me, but I have my pre-op appointment on Wed & it's starting to hit me... everyone keeps asking me if I'm excited... well, yes, a little... but I'm having major surgery & I asked for it! (Am I crazy?!?) Anyone out there who can perhaps give me some advice & maybe calm my nerves down a bit? Sent from my SM-G930R4 using BariatricPal mobile app

Just ate my first scrambled egg post op...they were tiny (farm fresh) so I made two...could only eat 1/2...it was delicious and I felt full so I stopped...now it’s a little heavy in my stomach but it is the first thing I’ve eaten that resembles solid food and I think my stomach is still trying to figure out what to do with it.

Hello! New to the forum and had my surgery done in 2004 in Spain. I'll be honest and say that I have not been good at all the past 5 years in getting my labs done. Outside of my regular physical's blood work that monitors Vit B and Iron levels, I have not dove any deeper I am currently receiving almost yearly iron infusions to stay on track. My question is, does anyone have any experience in getting your labs done outside of your bariatric surgeon? At my last physical, my PCP said he was not able to order this level of testing (despite him knowing I had the surgery?). Just looking for any recommendations, as being 13 years post-op I don't see myself seeking out a …

I don’t know the best way to address the issue, so if I sound to blunt it’s not intended. I’m wondering the possibility of excessive skin after losing weight in a rather quick way is there any way to prevent it or does it happen. If so is there exercises that are best to help it & to how extreme/amount is surgery the only option to address the issue. Thanks in advance for your replies/advice.

Hi there. I had the gastric sleeve performed in December of 2014 and have since then gained nearly all of my weight back. I'd really love to hear from someone who has had a similar experience who then went on to have a conversion to the DS or SADI/Loop. Has anyone had much success? Failure? I would really love to hear from anyone, as it's so hard to find any information on this! Thank you very much in advance for your time and kindness. juju

I belong to a Facebook group. Well they have me freaking out. On Oct 17, 2017 I had DS surgery. Well now I find out my surgeon doesn't perform the original ds. But a new one. I'm not sure which one I had but I looked on their website and it explains the steps to the surgery. I guess I got a DS loop, or SADI, I'm really dismayed. I feel like I did this all for nothing. These women are making me feel like a failure and I'm only ten days out. Has anyone been successful with the new kind if DS surgery Sent from my Z981 using BariatricPal mobile app

I joined the “losers bench” on 10/23/17 I got the standard Duodenal Switch. How long before you see a BM? I have been passing gas for the most part but feel kinda worried about no BM. Also any tips on how to stop the hiccups? It hurts so bad when they happen. I am getting all my fluids in for the most part and walking the best I can. My legs are super sore and arms as well and my abdomen isn’t as sore as I thought. I am on a clear liquid diet and my last bm was the 22nd. Thanks in advance!

I am 2 weeks out from a revision from VSG to DS. I have never liked protein drinks, but found a few that were tolerable. I have heard of taste changing after surgery, but did not have that with my VSG. NOTHING, I mean nothing taste “right”. My only saving grace is Crystal Light Peach Tea. My real worry is that I am gagging on my shakes. I take a drink and it just sits in my mouth. It’s like my body is refusing to swallow. If I push and I do swallow, I have a horrible gag reflex. is this normal? Has anyone else had this? Suggestions?

Duodenal Switch, 3 Months Post Op. Never hungry. Need to get in 90 grams of protein. Can't seem to do it. After a few bits, feel nauseous and don't want to eat anymore. Tried different protein shakes, also hard to get down. My best friends are the so called "slippery" foods, yogurt, yogurt, yogurt and cottage cheese. Help! How can I get solid protein down?

Hi, This is my first post. I have been considering getting the Duodenal Switch for a few years now, and I finally took the first step and attended a webinar, and scheduled an appointment with a surgeon. I had a few questions that I wanted answered though: Does anyone know if the Duodenal Switch will interfere with my Synthroid and Calcium absorption? I already have to take Calcium supplements (2000 mg/day), and I know that you have to take calcium supplements after duodenal switch surgery for life, but since I already take it will that mean that I have to take an even higher dose, or will I not be able to get a malabsorptive procedure? Thank You

Today I went for my three week postop visit with my surgeon. He is very pleased with my recovery and says I’m perfectly on target, as well as my 25 pound weight loss since 9/14! I have now been cleared to advance to the purée stage which includes eggs, cottage cheese and other yummy things. I’m very excited. But most exciting is that since I’m getting all my water in easily, I have permission to drink up to 2 cups of coffee each day!! Oh, how I have missed coffee!

I've done my research and found the Dr. to do my DS. Next month I will be putting in a deposit and scheduling the date. My primary care Dr. knows and is going to do my follow up care. I got my passport and my companion ordered hers today. I've cut out most of the bad stuff from my diet and am ready to start the pre-op diet with minimum withdrawals. I'm so ready for this. I am going back and forth on to tell or not to tell Facebook friends and co- workers. I'm ashamed of being 265lbs and 5"2'. Yes my co- workers see me daily but I can hide it from Facebook friends that don't see me regularly. I know I need to stop hiding and be happy with me and that's one reason I…

I'm on day 10 of my post-op liquid diet and "eating" has become a chore. It isn't that I crave anything...I'm just so sick of broth, yogurt, shake, jello....repeat. I don't enjoy any of it anymore...I tolerate it..barely. I'd rather not eat, but I know that's not an option. I am not allowed even thin purees for 11 more days. Ugh!

I'm currently pre-op for DS and waiting for a surgery date but a concern that's been racing my mind is about the aftermath of taking my current SSRI (Zoloft) My question is if the Zoloft absorb or have any side effects with the DS surgery..This is a fear for me being I depend on Zoloft for my anxiety. Hello everyone! I had my original surgery RNY Dec 2009 which was a hard road when finding the right dose for my SSRI zoloft. We work it out but i felt like i lost my mind for a while. Now that I am having my revision VSG & DS Aug 9th 2017. My question is does anyone have or had problem with absorption of there SSRI like zoloft? The reason I am asking is my for the DS part of the surgery because Zoloft work by breaks down and absorbing in the intestine. I am very nervous about the UP coming surgery because of that factor. Any information would help! Thank you Violet Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi everyone I am in need of advice for the past month I have gained 30 pounds of fluid my legs look like they did when I was heavy. I had my surgery in 2009 I have been good with my protein except when I donated plasma. I been having female problems and have been getting hormone shots I was thinking that was the reason for the water retention. My doctor did blood work 3 weeks ago and I asked how was my protein levels the person on the phone said they were fine, well I went back to the doctor for the follow appointment he wanted me to come back to for my female problems. He told me my albumin and protein was very low and my liver enzymes was high. I have backed off a lot o…

Morning! I was wondering if other people log their food and if so what do you monitor more, the calories or just focus solely on your protein intake? I am trying to stay under 600 calories but sometimes higher protein snacks or meal substitutions have a higher caloric intake. Also since I have been working out I am getting much more hungry...since I just had my surgery on 6/28/17 I still have my protein shake (which that right there is 160 calories) I was drinking an isopure clear for a snack since that was only 8 ounces and helped me reach my protein level. As of yesterday I went and bought the premier clear and that is 90 calories but 20 grams protein.... but it w…

I'm still struggling between having a ds, and a bypass. I'm terrified of surgery, and want to only have to do it once. My doctor has assured me that I have narrowed it down to the correct two surgeries for me, but says it's a personal choice. I have done tons of research, and am leaning more towards the ds, but am scared of the extra risks. Any advice would be great! My insurance mandated diet is over next month. I'll be having surgery hopefully in November.

What were the first steps anyone took to start the process, both of getting approval from insurance company and how to get started with a bariatric surgeon ? Also how & who decides exactly what type of bariatric procedure you get? Also I have Maryland medical assistance, and my mco is priority partners , has anyone who has the same type of insurance as me, had any issues with getting approval to cover the costs of the surgery and any other things that are required bloodwork & tests , dietitian services , etc

Hi all! I'm new to this site - I had the sleeve in August 2011 and lost a little weight and for the most part have been able to keep it off. I still have a lot more to loose so I am considering the DS. What have your experiences been with that surgery? Recovery time? Pain? Nutrient absorption? Thank you!

So I'm trying to plan for after my surgery (3 weeks away) and I'm wondering how much help everyone needed. My wife is going to need to go back to work a day or two after I get home. Should I ask my parents or a friend to come stay with me during the day? Also, how was doing stairs? My bedroom is on the second floor.

Hi Everyone, Not sure if I am just over reacting, but it seems like my weight loss has stalled and tomorrow will be my three weeks post op. I have no idea why. I am getting ready to start my soft foods and I have been doing the puree this last week. I found some recipes and have not gone over or eaten anything that isn't recommended. I am working on my activity and am walking 20 min. a day. I don't know if I am just over reacting or not, but I don't like this stall. I saw my surgeon at 10 days post op, and my weight has not really changed much since then. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi guys! It is my first time ever posting. I am wondering how you felt before and after surgery? I am doing the Standard Duodenal Switch and am quite nervous. My surgery date is October 23, 2017. I wanna know about pain levels, how was walking after?, complications, how long was your hospital stay?, do you regret the surgery?....etc. Also what's one thing you wish you knew before doing this? What advice do you have for me? Thank you all! <3

Hi, Newbie here! I have so far only gone to a seminar at my local hospital but have not yet had an appointment with my surgeon, but I am strongly drawn toward the duodenal switch given the excellent long-term maintenance prospects. Most of the risks and drawbacks sound manageable, but I've seen some real horror stories so far about uncontrollable bad body odor, and it's hard for me to tell how common a problem this is. Ketosis and bowel/flatulence odor sound like they can be mitigated by diet, but actual BO that persists in spite of frequent bathing/deodorant to the point where people's jobs are in danger sounds utterly terrifying to me. Is this a rare occurrence, or fair…

So one of the concerns my surgeon expressed was the importance of getting up and walking after the surgery. I have severe knee arthritis in both knees. So yesterday I had radiofrequency ablation of one knee...it will take one to two weeks to take full effect...it's a kind of nerve block that hopefully will decrease the pain in my knee. Planning to do the other one after I recover from surgery, but hopefully if the worse knee is less painful, I'll be able to walk enough after surgery. Fingers crossed!!

G'day! i had a gastric sleeve in 2014 and had a bmi of 35 at the time. I didn't loose that much weight, and unfortunately my weight has crept back up and I'm in the obease bmi category. Im thinking about getting the 2nd part of the surgery (the DS/SIPS/SAPS surgery). However I've heard that the DS surgery is a lot quicker on the surgery table, overnight stay in hospital, slightly less painful and a quicker recovery, and compared the the gastric sleeve surgery 'it's a walk in the park' eg a a much more pleasant recovery than the GS. i recognise everyone is different - however I'm keen to hear which surgery was harder reco…

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with taking synthesis after DS. I'm wondering if there were issues with absorption. Did you have to crush the pills? I had a total thyroidectomy a few years ago, so I have to take it daily and I'm wondering how surgery might affect it. Thanks.

Hi all, I know that DS'ers have foods that they avoid that have them running to the bathroom. What might some of your foods be? At nearly 2 months out, I have constipation and have always battled it since I was an infant. I take Miralax 3 X a day, colace, fiber gummies, magnesium citrate 3 X a day and ingest plenty of liquid and added fat bombs which get me to about 150 g a day. This has also resulted in very little weightloss overall and in the last 5 weeks. I have lost 14 lbs since surgery and 4 lbs in the last 5 weeks. Although I go every day, they are rock hard and painful. I even tried sugar free candy because I have read that can have adverse bathroom ef…
