Hi all! I am scheduled to have my DS on July 20th. I haven't even started my preop diet yet but looking forward to starting my new life. I must admit that I am a bit nervous as to the pain after surgery. I had a hysterectomy last year so I know a little bit of what to expect in terms of anesthesia and the like. This will be the first time I've ever had to stay at a hospital for more than a day. What was your guys' experiences? Nausea? Pain levels? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am pretty sure I'm going to choose the sleeve for my WLS but I research the crap out of everything. I already know I can't have RNY because certain medications I have to take can't be taken after bypass. I also asked about meds after sleeve and someone linked a very useful list and the meds I take can be taken after the sleeve. Now it's time to verify with the DS. I can't seem to find a list of meds that can and can't be taken after DS. Is it the same as bypass or sleeve, or different from both? Specifically I'm worried because I have severe allergies, I have to take 3 allergy meds a day (zyrtec, claritin, and allegra) just to be able to leave my house, and my allergi…

  10. I had my surgery 4 days ago and did really well in the hospital, the surgery went well and I was released by a little after noon the next day. Since I have been home I am having the hardest time ingesting my vitamins, medications and the protein that I am required to consume, along with the water. I am feeling very nauseated all the time and have to force myself to drink as required. The tastes are fine, I actually like the protein drinks I love drinking water and was a 96 oz a day person for the past 5 years. I am really struggling getting everything down. I have not vomited, I just feel like I am going to. I have a pretty bad hiatal hernia hernia and stage 3 Barrett's e…

Is my goal of 125 lbs a realistic goal? I had originally discussed with my Dr. that I really didn't have a goal weight in mind. I just want to be healthy, which still holds true. But now I do have a weight in my mind and it's 125. So I'm wondering if I'm just setting myself up for failure.

HI Everyone- I had SIPS surgery with a removal of my Lap Band about a month ago. In the last week I have been experiencing a lot of vomiting which I was told wouldn't happen as frequently as my LAP Band. I am wondering if its simply a diet adjustment. Maybe I am eating too fast? Maybe I can't tell when I am full? Maybe I advanced my diet too quickly? I would love to talk to some people who have had SIPS so I can hear some experiences. Please!

  14. Started by Mojo56,

I'm in Raleigh, Paul Enoch's is my surgeon and Nov 14th is my surgery date. I was going to have a lap band but he presented a new fairly new procedure he is doing and asked if I wanted to join a study on long term results. He explained that in Spain they have been doing this surgery for the last 3 years and in the states recently. My wife and I are in the medical field and his reputation is great. He is one of 7 surgeons nationally participating in the study it's called a Sleeve with single Anastomosis duodenoileal bypass (SIPS) . Anyone know anything about this. I can't find anything about this in any of the forums.

Hello Everyone, I am new to the forum and have made the decision to get WLS. My doctor approved me for DS and I have an appointment with the nutritionist on Monday. I am concerned about the DS vs. getting the standard GP. I have done my research and understand the differences, risks, etc. Would anyone mind sharing the reason behind your decision to get the DS rather than GP and if you believe it was the right decision for you? Thank you, Roni

  21. Hi all! So to start with I've ALWAYS had a tough to manage thyroid medication dose. Although I did have a couple years here and there where my dose would remain unchanged and even lowered on occasion. Since my surgery last year my dosage has required increasing every few months. We switched from Sythroid to Levoxyl and that hasn't made a difference. My last switch was in November to 200 mg Levoxyl with normal in limits blood work in February. I just had blood work last week and my thyroid function is completely out of range again. My TSH is 6.96 with a normal range of 0.40-4.50 while my T4 Free is in range. I have an appointment with my endo tomorrow morning but …

  29. Hi sleeved 2/3/14, dealing with reflux and regain of 20lbs (never got under 200 lbs with the sleeve) Surgeon predicted my goal weight as 222 SW: 297. I've never felt my sleeve was done correctly. Looking to revise due to reflux and regain. Being directed toward roux en y, but I do not have a gallbladder, so wouldn't it make more sense (since I'm already sleeved) to go with the DS? HELP, I need some input.

  30. Hi everyone, I had the sleeve gastrectomy surgery performed back in 2009. Unfortunately, I have gained my weight back. Admittedly, I did not adhere to the diet and exercise plan and once I started gaining, I was embarrassed and stopped going to the doctor. Add a divorce into the mix and I gained even more weight. I take complete responsibility for the weight gain, and I am now considering the DS as an option, since my original surgeon had mentioned that this could be the 2nd step of my sleeve surgery back in 2009. I meet with the office next week and am very nervous. I was hoping someone could tell me some of your high Protein food secrets, as I am trying to start…

Hello all!!!! Yesterday I got my Surgery date!!! Needless to say, I'm excited and scared. I found out that my gall bladder will also be removed during the surgery. That surprised me. Of course, I looked up why they would have to remove it, and understand that it's a preventive measure, but I'm still not completely clear. Can someone give me the "why the gall bladder is removed during DS surgery for dummies" explanation? Thanks!!

  34. I made a mistake and took 2 Iron tabs, 65 mg each. My iron was really low, I could tell because my RLS was acting up big time. Anyway, dinner just sort of stuck in my tummy overnight, still feels like it's there, and I've become increasingly nauseous as well. I'm able to pass gas, so there isn't a permanent blockage or anything. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm sipping Water slowly this morning hoping things will naturally ease along. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm 2 weeks post op and until this moment was recovering really well. Thanks!

When I have the DS done in a month and a half, I am REALLY afraid of not losing because I had the sleeve prior to this surgery and I won't be getting a sleeve revision. I got on the scale this morning, and my weight began with a "1". My weight was 319 on the morning of October 1, 2015, and I've been so looking forward to this day! I know that what the scale shows is only a part of the big picture, but the rest of the picture is positive also, and I'm so excited about the changes is my health and self-esteem. I just wanted to share this news, for me and also for those who are newly post-op, or having surgery soon. It feels amazing to say this to people who understand the little triumphs and the feeling that comes with them.

  40. Started by becomingmandikaye,

In my research about the DS, I found a blogger who recounted her experience with leaking from her belly button for MONTHS after the surgery. Is this common? There's so little information about the DS out there, that I'd love to know what complications might arise.

  41. Started by Samantha Hunt,

I had the sleeve in 2013 and am in the process of looking to revise to a DS. I am extremely worried about the insurance portion. I know "everyone's insurance is different" I get it. Having been through the insurance stuff before I do realize it's case by case etc. I have Aetna and I did read the policy jacket and all that. I just want to know is there anyone on here that was approved for a second surgery and if so what is your story? I have had a little regain but been stalled over a year and a "twisted" sleeve it looks like cobblestones on top of each other. My BMI is 37. NO COMORBIDIES (sp?) Has anyone been approved in a similar situation?

  43. Hello All! So I am currently in the pre-op stage and I have completed most of the testing. I had originally thought I would choose the GS, but have started looking into the DS. They seem to be fairly similar, but with the DS adding restriction, thus increasing Vitamin maintenance. I meet with the surgeon in 10 days and have been reading very helpful posts here, as well as reviewing the surgeon's manuals for each surgery. I have considerable weight to lose (BMI 45). I once was down to 185 lbs by counting calories and maintaining a log, but slowly gained it all back plus extra. So, I am a little worried about making the right choice the first time, as opposed to h…

  47. I had my DS surgery on 2/2/16 so Protein supplements are important for me to get my protein in. I am really struggling with finding a powder I can tolerate. whey Proteins were way too sweet and it turned out a was having allergic reactions to them so I had to switch to plant-based. Pea protein was nasty. Soy protein was tolerable for about a week then it started to make me gag. Mixed plant-based is just as bad as pea by itself. I'm finally in Phase One of sampling real food but it is very hard to get at least 60 grams of protein in a day from the short list of items we can choose from unless I eat chicken all day (2oz every 3 hours). How have you handled the protei…

  48. Hi guys, my name is Jennifer and I am new to Bariatric Pal. I was 3/4 of the way through pre-op for the SIPS/Loop-DS/SADI-DS procedure when NC BCBS decided to stop covering it and deemed it an experimental/investigational procedure. My co-worker had SIPS a little over two months ago with the same Dr group and insurance. Talk about frustrating. Looking into regular DS with Dr. Sudan in Durham. He seems to be well-respected for that procedure and the office is still close to me. A little overwhelmed by the Vitamin regimen that the DS will require, but consider it as my responsibility for allowing my weight to get this way. My mom suffers from SMO and co-morbidities and…

Hi all! I had the sleeve done Jan 2013, lost 150lbs and then gained back around 60 of them. Talked to my surgeon and we agreed that my best option at this point would be to revise to the duodenal switch. I AM super excited about having another second chance but I'm terrified aboutt failing again. I also am more worried about recovery time because my boss if acting very reluctant to give me a lot of time off(I'll only have 9 months in so I'm not eligible for FMLA). I'm really hoping to only need two weeks off but I know I needed a lot more than that the first time around. Any advise or stories about recovery? I just want to be optimistic while still being realistic…

  50. Hello all. I see lots of posts about weight loss and numbers and what the scale shows during the first few months following a DS. I've also seen a few photo 'journals' that demonstrate what the weight loss looks like over time. Did anyone keep track of their clothing size as they lost weight the first 3-6 months? Would anyone care to share how their clothing size changed during that time? I know it's different for everyone, I'm just curious. Thanks so much!
