  2. Hello everyone, So my surgery is a week from Monday, on the 22nd. I'm feeling really frightened lately, and I can't shake it. Did any of you experience this feeling? I'm converting from a band to a D/S. The band worked really well for a few years. Then it slipped and the weight just piled on. I feel like a failure. I have so much weight to lose now. I'm fearful that something will go wrong and I'll be the one that the surgery doesn't work for. Is that silly? I'm walking, following my liquid/protein diet, doing my abdominals and trying to stay positive, but I'm really worried. If any of you can relate I'd love to hear how you overcame this awful dread and fea…

Unlike when I had my sleeve done I haven't had that "what did I do to myself?" moment but I am starting to feel like this may have been pointless. My boyfriend(who I live with) says he's supportive and has no problem telling me I can't have things but at the same time he wants me to cook for him or bring him dinner or sit by while he eats fast food. It kills me and I end up cheating because I can't resist. I know I have a food addiction and binge eating disorder so food can and has brought me to tears(both because of eating and because of restricting). Unless you suffer from this you really don't understand, its to the point where he's getting mad at me because he shou…

Hello all! I had my DS surgery at Duke University in Durham NC with Dr. Sudan on 4/3 and am doing really well. Have tolerated mostly everything on my soft diet. I did have to stay in the hospital for 5 days and the 2 week post op liquid diet was rough! I made it through and feel lots of energy and have lost about 40 lbs so far. I had a question. Since everyone's surgery have any of you been hungry? Or what you "think" is hungry? When I met with the psychologist, which was required where I had surgery, she said we would not experience physical hunger for 6 months to a year. I am one month post op and I feel hungry or what I perceive as hunger. I am eating every 3 to …

  5. When I first started looking into Bariatric surgery I was sure I would get the sleeve. After meeting with the surgeon that was also his recommendation. I am a male, 5'9 and 320lb However after speaking to him further I explained I used to be 394 and had gotten down to 200 between 2008 and 2011 using weight watchers. Since then I have put 100 lb back on. After learning this he then suggested i do the switch to give me a better chance of hitting my metabolic set point and lowest weight regain. But if course it's up to me. So now I have no idea what to do. I was already nervous about doing the sleeve but thought it was "doable". With the DS I'm scared about the longer a…

Hey everybody i'm about 5 weeks out after my surgery and so far i've lost about 30 lbs. (I opted with the ds) I did have some complications in surgery and i was in the hospital for almost 4 days. About 2 weeks after my surgery i developed severe acid reflux and i'm currently on my 3rd PPI and also taking carafate susp several times a day. The acid reflux is so severe i'm still out of work and will be for the next 2 weeks. Every time i eat or drink i get incredibly nauseous and theres a weird pain that radiates from the top of my stomach. Its been so bad i've been in the hospital twice to get fluids to prevent dehydration. My cat scan showed there was no leakage and i'm ge…

Hey everyone, I had the band for 6 + years, it finally took 3 years of enough complaining that's someone listened and agreed something was wrong. Anywho, I decided to go with the DS. Had surgery on Tuesday. Other then pain, everything seems to be good. However, the surgeon said the scar tissue was so bad around the band and the the stomach had grown around the band and actually attached to part of the liver that it took him almost an hour just to remove the band. So he did not do the sleeve part of the surgery. He did however reroute the intestines and did the 'switch' The surgeon said he said we may never have to go back to do the sleeve because he thinks this may…

I had SIPS surgery 6/8/15. I'm so happy I had this surgery and I'm feeling and looking fantastic, EXCEPT my hair!! First think I've noticed is my hair was becoming dry and frizzy and falling out, ALOT. I am so subconscious, that I wear my hair up so no one notices. I also am Hypothyroid, but my levels have recently been checked and are where they should be. I take my Vitamins every day, (3) Bariatric Advantage Ultra Multi Formula, (1) 500 mg Bariatric Calcium Citrate, (1) 1000 mg Evening primrose oil, Vitamin B Complex lots of it. Has anyone gone through this? Will your hair regrow? HELP!

  10. Hello All and Happy New Year!! I now have a new dilemma... Right now, I'm pre-op and have started changing my diet to stay in the calorie limit set for my weight and BMI by my nutritionist. One of my goals was to eliminate carbonated drinks (my main drink is Diet Mt. Dew) which I have done pretty good with keeping. I have also done pretty good with my other goal of at least 90 minutes of exercise a week and drinking at least 64 ounces of Water a day. Here's my dilemma: Ever since I started changing my diet and eliminated sodas, I can't seem to get enough to eat!! It's like a hole in my stomach and I can't fill it up!! And the flatulence that came with the change of die…

In one sitting I had 4oz of salmon and two crab cakes before feeling anything close to full. At another I ate 7 oz of talapia and a 3oz cup of lobster bisque for another meal. With no issues in or out. I ate slow and chewed but Is this volume normal? Im only 3 wks out. As long as its not near meal time, I can drink all I the Water I want without any ill effects and without second thought about pace. I am 4 days post opp and so far, the predictions of more frequent Diarrhea and gas are seem to be true. I don't mind too much, I got a dog, I can blame him :-) However, I am finding it hard to differentiate when I'm going to pass gas and when I am going to have a stool...... Will this get easier to tell the difference? I don't want to have to walk around everywhere with a spare pare of underwear or go to the bathroom every time I need to fart.

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I've been reading a lot of the posts but I have a couple of questions. I wanted to know if anyone can recommend a surgeon in Los Angeles CA that takes Anthem Blue Cross HMO. Also I wanted to know if everyone usually starts with their normal family doctor and then is recommended to a surgeon or do they find a surgeon that is covered by the insurance who does all of the paperwork? Just a reminder I have HMO not PPO. Thanks!

  17. Hello, I had surgery this year November 18th. Almost a month, but I have this taste in my mouth that makes me want to gag all the time. My surgery was a little tricky and there were complications. I ended up staying in the hospital for a week and my surgery lasted 6.5 hours. Because of this I am on a very strict diet and just last week they allowed me to go to pureed foods. Is it the food, the shakes, or the actual DS surgery, what is going on with my mouth!!! I want to brush every minute. However, another side affect is that nothing tastes right. I have to literally force my self to eat anything. Has this happened to anyone? Just wondering! Sandra

I am currently waiting to be scheduled for surgery. Should get the call next week for a date! I'm really nervous! Why the drain tube? Yes, I know I should just research this but quite frankly, research just scares me! And why staples? I had a c section 18mo ago and they used the glue and steri strips. No staples and that's a huge incision compared to the one's for a DS. Those 2 things scare the crap outta me probably more than the surgery itself. Silly! Hi everyone, I'm new, and this is my first post. My surgery is in three weeks, and I'm concerned about a few things. I'm having a DS, and I've been told that if I don't lose enough fat from my liver before surgery, I may end up with a sleeve instead. Is this familiar to any of you? Any idea how much weight I should try to lose in the next three weeks? I know that a week from now I go on a special pre-op diet, but is this going to be enough? I just wanted to write a quick update on my experience so far for those who will be having surgery soon. My surgery was October 1st. I had a hard time shaking off the anesthesia, and it made me a little nauseated for the first 24 hours. I haven't thrown up since October 2nd (knock on wood), so I'm pretty happy about that. I left the hospital on October 3rd for home, and everything has gone surprisingly smoothly. My (eight!) teeny incisions are in good shape, and my follow-up appointment is tomorrow. I get to start eating pureed foods then, too - but my surgeon is very, very strict, so it's not a vast menu. I don't even care - pureed scrambled eggs sound like cuis…

I have been told by all of my doctors it will not fix all of my problems but will help at least 50% of them. I am so looking forward to it. I was working my program like a pro... I'm still working out and watching what I eat but have started regaining weight.(25 lbs. in the last 18 months) I would like to hear from others that have had revision or are going straight to the duodenal switch. Hi Everyone, I am a 43 year old man getting DS in supposedly 2 weeks (still waiting on confirmation from Insurance). Not many people know what I am doing in a few weeks and I must admit I am a bit scared. I am making a point of attending a support group tomorrow night. I have needed this surgery for well over 10 years and now as it comes so close to the date I am a bit nervous. I think my biggest hang up is being so restricted later in life when it comes to diet. I know I need the surgery but my brain wants to trick me. I am sure everyone felt the same way right? Thanks!

I'm just wondering what experiences good or bad others have had and also can you lose too much weight and if so how do you stop that ?

So here it is, I have had the sleeve now for almost three years and have gained weight and not at the goal I wish to be at. What I want to know is what it is like with the switch part? Does it not enable you to eat certain foods? Do you eat certain foods? How much food do you eat? I find I still have good restriction with the sleeve however I can eat the foods that I shouldn't be. What about your surgeon? Did you have to pay for surgery and how much? I would be going to Mexico or the US but I would need to find a US surgeon first. Thanks for your responses Donna

If anyone else has similar issues, how do you, did you handle it? Prior to surgery I was nearly always in a good mood.

  47. Just wanted to check in and let you all know that I had my DS surgery early Tuesday morning, with the removal of my gallbladder. I feel really great, all things considered! I'm glad that part is over. But I've had very minimal pain and not even one episode (thus far) of vomitting or even nausea. I was in the hospital Tues - Friday and came home Friday evening. My biggest obstacles so far are just my own anxiety (which I struggled with prior to surgery) and getting fluids in.
