I’m 5 months post op Duodenal Switch. For the last week I’ve experienced nausea early in the morning and again in the evening. I’ve thrown up a few times. I haven’t been sick at all since surgery, so I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this months after surgery? Thanks!

I’m 9 months post op. I lost 93lbs. The last two and a half weeks I gained 8lbs! I tried eating better. Nothing doing. I’m still steadily gaining weight. How do I make it stop????

Is it ok to do intermittent fasting with the DS/ sips? My point of wanting to do this is not for weight loss. I just want to take control of my eating habits. Is it safe for  malabsorption?

Hey! I’m new here. Stats first. Starting weight :270 height: 5” 4” Surgery date: July 18 2019. Current weight: 177. Goal weight: 145 I know that by now I should be getting the hang of this eating situation, now that I’m 9 months post op. I just can’t seem to get control over my eating. To make matters complicated, no matter what in the world I’ve been eating, I’ve been losing weight nicely and have no complications whatsoever. I really have no motivation to eat ‘healthy’. The reason I did this surgery was to become HEALTHY, not to lose weight while stuffing my face with whatever I want.. I’m confused. To what extent to I need to “diet” if I’m mal-absorbent? My bloo…

  8. Reading this forum, i get the feeling that ALL people that went through a DS get this issue and they all mention it as a major discomfort. Is it? All?

I'm in Oregon (with OHP insurance) and I'm having a really hard time finding ANY DS surgeons in the state. I used the tool on the site and only came up with 2 that actually look legit. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? I'm 90% certain DS is the right surgery for me, it's just been difficult getting started.

  10. I'm just shy of 7 months post op from a Modified DS. Starting weight was 244 - current weight is 165. Do you eventually stop loosing weight? It's still coming off pretty fast and part of me worries that I'm going to get 'too thin'.

Hello! My prealbumin is really low, to the point of severe edema. I can hardly walk. I've been increasing my protein to as close to 150g/day as possible. Nothing's working. Anyone else have this issue??? Had DS in Sept. 2016.

Hey guys, I'm at the 10 month mark and just got my third round of blood tests for vitamins done. Consistently, I am low in vitamin D3, which I have a hard time understanding. After it came up low last time (about 3 months ago) they gave me a prescription for 50,000UI to take for 12 days, and ever since then I've been taking three 5,000ui caplets EVERY DAY.... according to the bottle, one 5k caplet is 1250% of daily requirements, so I'm taking 3750% of my daily requirement every day! Seems like overkill. But my blood test showed my D3 was LOWER than it was 3 months ago. NOTE: I live in San Diego, so even though it's winter, I get more sun than most. I…

Curious as to how long the surgery takes. Thanks.

  14. Hello - I'm having DS surgery mid to late April. I live alone in an in-law apartment in my son and daughter-in-law's home. Did anyone need any help from anyone in the initial healing process? They just had a baby so I don't want to be a burden to them too much. So if you did need help - how often and with what? Thanks in advance for your help. This is a great forum!

  15. Started by Rose57,

I'll be having DS surgery in about 6 weeks and starting to do some research on the vitamins and supplements I will need to take. There are many choices out there and some have a higher percentage of certain vitamins than others. One brand will have a higher amount of Vitamin A than the other but the other brand has higher amount of Vitamin E etc. What is the best way to determine which brand is better than the other? Of course, price is a factor also. Thanks in advance !

Has anyone had a revision from sleeve to a duodenal switch with GEHA insurance? I’m having terrible GERD. I had the sleeve 6 years ago and have been on nexium ever since. My GERD is getting worse. So I’m thinking about starting the process of having a revision. Not sure if GEHA would cover it or even where to start with the process.

Hey guys, This may be a tough subject, but if it can't be discussed on an anonymous forum where we regularly discuss our bowel movements and farts, were else can it be discussed? I've kind of hinted at this in a couple of my previous posts, but four weeks ago, my issues with alcohol had gotten to the point that I finally had no choice but to start attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, as well as various addiction treatment options provided through my health plan. For background on what I'm talking about, see: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/popular-weight-loss-surgery-roux-en-y-gastric-bypass-linked-to-alcohol-problems/ According to some studies, the od…

  18. I have a BMI of 42.5 with no co morbities. I do suffer from knee pain and sciatica. Most of the research I have done recommends SIPS/Loop DS for a BMI > 50 so just curious if anyone with a similar BMI to myself has gotten the Loop DS? I am trying to decide between just the sleeve or the Loop DS.

Am still deciding on my surgery and had never really considered (or known much about) DS till I came here. So, do most of you choose DS because its much harder to put on weight later? Do you go into the surgery knowing that most likely you will have this foul smelling poo and horrible stinky fart problem I am reading about? This part scares the crap out of me. What do you think are the pros/cons vs RNY. Both are such big decisions....

I weighed myself this afternoon and almost burst into tears! I haven't been under 300 pounds since I was 17! 15 years ago! And my scale said 298.4 pounds! I was almost bouncing with how happy I was and started texting tons of family members and friends lol. They all know how big this is for me and... dang it now I'm crying... It's not even a month since I had my surgery and I'm so glad I did it! Now every ten pounds is likely to put me in tears again lol, but I'm sooooo happy! What was everyone else's first big milestone? Do you feel like sharing your own experience?

Guys I am hoping someone can give me some advice to help me. I am 17 months post-op from my switch surgery and I had done great until the past few months. Around August my weight loss begin to slow down and by October, I had plateau. Due to graduate school commitments, I was not able to devote time for exercise, but I stayed strict to my diet. From November till January I would fluctuate a few pounds. Since Christmas I am slowly putting on weight, despite me doing weight loss exercise classes four times a week. Being frustrated, I contacted my surgeon's office and explained my diet and exercise regimen, all I was told is "this is a small hump, and you just need to do a di…

Anyone out there dealing with vitamin or iron deficiencies? My original surgery was in 02 but I didn't have any problems with my vitamins or iron until I had to have surgery for a bowel obstruction in 2015. Since that surgery, my vitamins A, D, E, K & iron have been consistently critically low. I do not absorb the supplements in pill form. Have tried them all. Started using the patches from here. Still didn't come up. Finally had vit K injections & iron infusions that brought those 2 up temporarily, but can't find any dr who knows what to do about the A, D or E. Surely there's an infusion for vitamins?

Had surgery yesterday morning and my blood sugars are very high. I don't get it. They havent been this high in months and now after surgery they are bad again. Nurse said could be due to stress from the pain as I have a lot of pain or from some of the medications they have been giving me. Has this happened to anyone else? I really was hoping my diabetes would get better as soon as I had my surgery.

I am currently failing at finding a surgeon in Boston that performs DS surgery. Mind blown as Boston prides itself on great health care. I just got off the phone with Brigham and Women’s and their head surgeon said he doesn’t do DS, has never heard of SIPS and that the loop would be out of pocket and not covered by insurance. Huh? Mass general also said they do not perform. Newton Wellesley said they do the SIPS but have only done 3. This has left me asking myself why?? Should I not be considering the DS? Or is this a it’s them not me situation. Please help Boston DSers!! Thanks :)

I'm currently scheduled for a MGB in February (from a GS). My surgeon and I only talked about the MGB, and not DS. My BMI is 36.6 (with two co-morb.), but I really want this to be my final surgery (no more revisions!). Should I talk to my doctor about the DS? Is recovery/life style really that different than a MGB/GB? I'm a self-pay, so insurance is not a concern. I have to take Rexulti for depression (I've tried stopping and it went poorly) and it caused me to regain 30 pounds, so I'm particularly concerned about weight regain. Thanks in advance!

  29. Are these the same things? I am trying to do more research on the procedure but I keep finding it called Loop Duodenal Switch or Duodenal Switch and was wondering if they are different procedures or the same one. Thank you for any help! Plus if you've had it, I would really like to know if you had any complications!

Abdomen feels crampy, pain has shared today. Felt pretty nauseated day 2. My oxygen levels are a concern, so I'm being sent home today with some oxygen tanks for my cpap and for rest time. Tonight I'll sleep completely flat in bed to see what that's going to be like. Might need to strategize how to effectively roll out of bed. I'm so very happy for the awesome people here who have shared their experiences over the years. I'm excited to get back home today!

I’m researching SIPS vs DS and I’m so confused on the correct choice! SIPS seems easier to live with less side effects possibly and an up and coming surgery while DS has been around longer and has more follow up data. My surgeons office only does SIPS and truly has not done that many of them so I’ll probably switch surgeons as well. My story is that I had a nightmare band experience in 2011, didn’t lose much at all and regained all as well as port discomfort etc until being revised in 2017 to sleeve. I did amazing on sleeve for 2 years lost almost all my weight (112lbs) but regained about half. I’m desperate to find the right surgery and so afraid I will make another …

  37. Did my classes, scheduled a date (I'm a teacher, doc said he deeply appreciated teachers and military and wanted to book around my schedule). But then I was denied by my insurance. I'm guessing my employer plan doesn't cover it. I'm hoping my surgeon can appeal on my behalf. I have a BMI in the mid 40's with comorbidities. I'm excited, and nervous. My school is going to let me take almost 2.5 months off to recover and figure out my new lifestyle.

  38. I figured I’d take a gander and post in the DS since it’s not as active as the others. I’ve been working since October of last year to get to this point. My surgery is 10/22. I was approved 9/29 and they offered 10/8 if I could take some time off work to do pre-surgery testing. Well.....my receptionist at work is not ready for me to take a 2 week leave with 3 days prep. They offered the 15th....hubs said, might as well wait till the 22nd so we are after payday and can more easily afford the loss of my pay (he’s contract so no pto). Fine.... Hey Everyone! I have recently embarked on my weight loss journey by attending a seminar last month at REX Bariatrics in NC. I have since been back for orientation and a nutrition class. I will be meeting with my surgeon on 06/10/19. I am 424 lbs, 5'6", and have a BMI of 68. I am considering the duodenal Switch procedure. I feel mostly excited, but apart of me is nervous for the surgery. I feel confident about doing the right things after surgery. I'm already in a good workout routine, and I have been seeing a dietitian and therapist for emotional eating. I am mostly nervous about the procedure itself. What if I am part of the percent that something goes wrong? …

I am 40 years old and have been diagnosed with chronic heart failure. My cardiologist recommended bariatric surgery because of my bmi and co morbid conditions. I have already met with the surgeon at the University of Utah where I get most of my medical care but my insurance will pay me $500 to have it done elsewhere. I have now been through the beginning portions of the weight loss program at a different hospital and have my "pre op" appointment on August 26th. I hadn't considered the duodenal switch because the university doesn't offer it but the new hospital does. After all of my research, I feel relatively confident that this is the most appropriate choice for me. Howe…

Has anyone experienced a doctor that tried to push you in the direction of the sleeve over the full DS surgery? I received new paperwork for an appt that said I was being setup for the sleeve, so I anticipate having to meet with him and lay out why I want the full ds instead. Figured I would see if anyone else here has experienced this....
