I'm 4 months post op today from my SIPS procedure. I have lost 83lbs in total since the start in early June, and 68 lbs since surgery, however I was hoping to be further along and even at my last Dr appointment they indicated I could have lost more and were surprised I hadn't. I seem to be averaging 11 lbs a month over the last 3 months, but what keeps happening is that I lose 11lbs in one week, then NOTHING for 3 weeks!! Is this normal? At first I thought it was just a stall, but the last 3 months in a row have had exactly the same pattern. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy to have lost the weight I have, but I was kind of hoping for it to go a bit quicker,…

Today I'm on a clear liquid diet bc ds surgery is tmrw. May sound silly but, I wanted to check and see if bone broth was ok to drink vs chicken broth? I know bone broth has bone marrow and pureed organs in it. I just had this sinking feeling come over me that I should check before I drank some. Thanks so much!

My Lap DS was in 2003 the first lap 8 hrs in surgery. An excellent surgeon who went from Omaha to Duke now and his wife was an awesome GI surgeon for children. But a few years after surgery I started having dental problems my teeth fractured and still do it! It drives me nuts. I don't want dentures I take good care of my teeth and lots of bucks on them. Does anyone else have this problem?

Preparing for DS surgery! I’m preparing for DS surgery 11/8! Had sleeve done in March ‘17 as start of staging for this! I just love these protein drinks soooo much (pardon my sarcasm)... started from my highest at 464# got as low as 350, now maintain at about 360. Hang in there folks! Getting this far has taken a lot of time, Dr appointments, phone calls... you know! It’s been a long road and the journey is just started! More to come as we go!

Hey guys. I'm pre-op, probably having my surgery around February. I was 427 at heaviest. Now I'm down just below 400. Are there others around this weight post op DS with great results? What was/is your goal weight? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I had DS in 2014 and have been lazy these past few years, with the scale slowly climbing to a good 20-30lbs over what has been my "normal" weight for most of my post-op time. So many of my colleagues are doing Keto or eating low-carb and seeing such amazing weight loss results (and other benefits). Has anyone tried dieting like this or have any insight. Google results are 99% RNY so I'm unsure. Also, I've taken up intermittent fasting as a tactic. The 16/8 plan where I fast for 16 hours, and have an 8 hour eating window. I'd appreciate any insight from the veterans out there!

Hi all. I just finished my DS procedure at the university of Chicago. Recovering well. My surgeon said he had to do a single loop DS as opposed to the double loop DS. There seems to be little research about this procedure. Can anyone tell me the difference between this and traditional DS? I'm very distressed that I didn't get the procedure I thought I was getting.

I am new here and I am trying to decide between SIPS and DS. I am wondering how those of you who have had the SIPS done are doing? How far out, how much you’ve lost, potty, and gas, vitamin care....

I'd like to say hello to everyone here as I am a newb. My surgery date was Thursday Sept. 6 and I came home today from the hospital. Bowel habits are a bit embarrassing to discuss but I had my first BM today and it was loose. This was of course after I left the hospital and after normal call hours. It is not serious at this point but wanted to see if others had this trouble shortly after surgery? Did you use imodium, citrucel?

Hey everyone! I’m one week post op and I feel pretty great! I’m doing ok getting my protein in for the most part. That needs work, but what I’m truly struggling with is getting my 64oz in. I’m not feeling thirsty and I’m taking small sips but I only seem to be getting (2) 17oz bottles of water in a day (if I’m lucky). Any tips or ideas? Anyone have the same issues?

ok, so i know this surgery is supposed to keep those hunger pains at bay, but most days, I am still feel hunger pains - maybe within a few hours of me eating. I feel like these hunger pains stem from my PCOS. I'm going to ask my doc this on our next follow-up call, but I just wanted to know if anyone else still felt hunger pains so soon after surgery?

Hello All - So I had my DS surgery with Dr. Keshishian in California on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 (forgive me if I'm not doing this right, I am counting my surgery day as "day 1"). It was to be done laproscopically, but I had a lot of scar tissue from previous surgeries, so he did have to cut into my lower abdomen area. When I awoke, I was in a lot of pain and vomitting from the anesthesia. The first day was not good for me. It was many hours before they made me get up to walk (and it was a very short distance). My second day was a little better, but I was still out of it most of the day and didn't want to press the morphine button that much - in fact, I onl…

I’ve always been heavy. Even as a kid I was the chubby kid, the funny class clown, the best friend. After high school I attempted different diets, all of which failed miserably. I was a Theater geek so it always hurt to not get cast into the characters I wanted to play. After various relationships and weight gain and loss I finally found the perfect person who I’m going to marry who is my partner in crime and hands down slightly funnier than I am. Slightly. When we started dating I knew our weight was a problem but it wasn’t until moving to Orlando that I really could tell that it had affected us. I was never a person to actually want to have kids but being with Holly has…

I know its only been 2 months since Ive had the duodenal switch surgery plus i had my gall bladder removed and hiatal hernia repaired as well all at one time, but damn I just dont feel 100% better... I am not hungry at all, I hardly eat. I make myself stay hydrated and take my vitamins of course , ALL of them! Thats a challenge but I Do it! Its definitely a struggle, something I was not prepared for. Although I am losing weight for sure! but I am kind of weak as well during the day... probably because im not getting my protein in, but like I said its hard to eat... I take 1 or 2 bites and I am full. Everything is tasteless to me too or I do not like it at all. All …

After spending 12 years with a lap band that didn't work for me, I finally opted to take it out and get the ds. My surgery was on June 21st. I'm really struggling to get even my water in. Everything feels tight. I tried a protein shake today and got about 4 tiny sips in before it started to get tight and hurt. I just feel like kicking myself that I didn't just get the band out and leave it at that. I'm 5" and 250 lbs so I know I really needed surgical help but for some reason I still feel mad at myself. Does it get better? Please someone tell me that it does.

Hey, i had had a vsg in 2014 I never really lost that much weigh and now i’ve had substantial weight regain. I’ve spoken to a surgeon that offers the sips procudure, and he said sips would be a good option for me. He will often do a redo/ tighten an old sleeve operation if there has been excessive stretching, or an abnormal bulge etc. in the sleeve shape. His theory is why not, do a quick redo while we are there, when doing the sips. Has anyone had a sleeve redo and the sips procedure?? also, I see a lot of comments on this forum about foul gas and terrible diherea? How long did these horrid symptoms last for? I don’t expect my gas ect will eve…

I am so excited about getting this surgery. I have to also admit that I am nervous too. This is my first WLS - and hopefully ONLY one that I will have, so I had to make sure I am getting the right procedure for me. I am from Texas and will be traveling to Cali for this (my husband in tow :-) he is totally supportive), but I've heard by many that Dr. Keshishian is one of the bests for this surgery. When I first spoke with him on the phone, I felt an instant rapport/click. I did read about his disciplinary status, but I overcame that. I know a couple of personal friends who have had the sleeve gastrectomy (hope i spelled that right) and had wonderful results (one los…

Hi everyone, I had my surgery on 5/2/2018 and, Alhamdulilah, I am doing very well! I have transitioned from liquids to soft foods and can tolerate nearly everything. EXCEPT DAIRY! So, after I got home, my liquid diet consisted of mainly shakes and yogurt which I had all prior to my surgery. Then, after 6-9 hours, I would have dumping syndrome. It was exasperating and confusing. I called my doctor's office, left a message, and then started doing some research online. I found a website by a surgeon in Alaska that said 90% of DS patients cannot digest dairy products with lactose. A fact that they never mentioned in the 4 nutrition classes prior to surgery. When the…

I had DS surgery June 12 and felt slight soreness, nothing unusual, felt ready to 24 hours laterPOD 1...then it hit with a ton of bricks, POD 2, excruciating pain, high heart rate and inability to walk.. had a cat scan it was negative for leak... POD3my surgeon wasn’t convinced and Wanted too keep me to see how I was feeling wasn’t quite up to par but pain controlled still walking, every 3 hours slow but steady..POD4 woke up with fever103.9 and heart in 120’s. Plan was exploratory lap 2 hours later, came out of OR with 3 drains and a NGT to decompress stomach and a PCA..for pain control, he found a teeny tiny leak, restitched it and covered with muscle. Hi, new to this site and only 6 days post op. I went to Mexico for surgery. Everything went well however I am slightly concerned as I have prepped myself for small sips and having so much fluid in a time period. However I had a moment when I was so thirsty I didn’t think and quzzled some water. Once I noticed I was half a water bottle down I was expecting something to happen, discomfort, vomiting or something. But I had nothing. Does this seem off to anyone. Is it normal to be only a week out and able to drink as normal. I am going to attempt soft food today. What if I eat and don’t feel the fullness? Should I be measuring my fluids and food out and only haveing that at …

Hi, im new here on this forum. i got the duodenal switch last aug. I'm 9 months post op. I've lost 100 pounds. I have chronic fatigue and muscle weakness half the week which lasts all day long. Feels like im spaced out and out of it all day. I'm certainly vitamin deficient even though all my supplements were approved by the nutritionist at the bariatric office. I saw a hematologist a few months ago and i dont have any anemia. Does anyone which exactly is causing this chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, etc? Mea Culpa: I'm a month out from SIPS procedure, and I've been lazy with my vitamin program. No particular reason. I have chewables which taste fine and I don't mind taking. I just keep forgetting. One solution might be the patches, which I need to look into... Regardless, as far as I can tell, I'm not experiencing any ill effects. But I assume with the malabsorption that comes with the mini-DS, vitamin deficiency is much more serious and is eventually going to catch up to me (it's only been a month). My question is - apart from my teeth falling out -how will I know whether I'm getting enough supplements (or even too much?) I'm scheduled to get r…

I'm at a stall. I've been between 170 and 175 for the past couple of months, which my DR. told me to expect after I dropped the amount of weight I did. The past week or so, I've been seeing that my weight is slowing creeping up to the 180 mark and I'm scared to death. I've been monitoring my carb and sugar intake and I've gone back on the protein shakes for breakfast or lunch. I'm extremely worried that i'm going to gain back all the weight. I've seen myself falling into past habits (binge eating disorder and weighing myself every day up to 3x a day), eating sugary food (candy) and not getting enough liquids in. It probably isn't helping that i'm trying to complete my deg…

I’m needing some support. Not shaming. I’m having difficulty meeting my nutritional intake for my duodenal switch surgery from 2015. Im gettin in about 80-109 g of protein a day but my protein levels a still low. I’m having swelling in my legs and complete lethargy. I’m also having extreme loose bowel movements multiple times a day. I went through about 6 weeks of racking diarrhea and that sapped my levels even lower. I’ve tried upping my intake of protein to three shakes a day plus food to about 100-120 but the swelling and lethargy didn’t subside. I’ve been to numerous Dr’s and they can’t seem to get a handle on it. I’m exhausted and tired of eating and being sick. I…

I had my surgery 3 years ago come this June. Look and feel great in my size 9/10 jeans and medium tops! However, these past 3 days I have been having severe diareah, frothy and yellow in color. Upper part of my abdomen has been feeling gasy and full. I have been trying to drinking more fluids, and cut out any carbs, eating only protein and veggies. Taking my vitamins. No fever or feeling ill, but fear something is wrong. Has any other veterans had this issue? Sent from my SM-S320VL using BariatricPal mobile app

Day 19 Post Op, feeling better , losing weight everyday about 1-2 lbs a day it varies sometimes only 1 pound a day. im down about 35 lbs so far I went to my soft foods class yesterday! Yay! I will be able to start eating softer foods but honestly i have no appetite at all. I am trying to get my protein as much as I can and stay hydrated as well. my tummy is still tender but no pain really. I am taking it easy. My surgeon says I am not cleared to do any long road trips yet. boo! But I am now starting my bariatric vitamins. Got all those yesterday too. got some protein wafers too. yum. Anyone on soft food stage? and if you are , what are you eating?

So, im undecided which surgery I should do gastric sleeve or duodenal switch. I had done a lot of research on the sleeve even bought a huge book on the sleeve almost done reading it all but now I kinda want the DS. At my consultation they did recommend the DS for me because I’m diabetic. I’m just so scared cause it is more invasive. The sleeve isn’t. Also, with the DS your less likely to gain your weight back. So that sounds good to me. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?

Okay, so I’m 18 days post op, official move to soft day, a week ago my nutritionist allowed me to add a couple soft foods to my diet and slowly begin transitioning because I was struggling so badly on the purée liquid diet. Since I added any semi soft food to my diet I’ve lost no weight. I’m still only eating about 800 cal a day, but losing nothing. My water intake is where it should be, my protein intake is a little bit low, but I have a really hard time getting a Knouff food in in a day right now still. I am also getting my exercise in but still don’t seem to be losing anything. I’ve heard about the stalls, has anyone had any luck breaking through the stall by increasin…

Hi guys, I was banded as a self pay patient in 2007 and need a revision. My bmi is 41. I originally wanted DS but though this is an approved surgery, there are no in network providers who cover it. So from my insurance book I can see that I could definitely get approved for a sleeve but SIPS is not listed under covered procedure OR under excluded procedures. I was wondering if anyone had insurance that did approve a sips? I have UHC but any input is appreciated

Liquids are so hard to get to my goal! still sore but all is ok. All the surgery weight I gained(12 lbs) is gone! Yay!!! I was so worried about that. But I’m losing and that’s all that matters! The 64 oz of water is tough to get in and so is 80-100 of liquid protein! How are others doing it?[emoji31]?
