DS and vitamins and biotin?

Hey y'all, just wondering what everyone takes as in vitamins after DS. I am 6 months post op :)

I am on 3 multi vitamins a day, an extra 45 mg of iron pill, and 1800 mg of calcium ( 4 chews a day) I also take a biotin... any idea what a good dose of biotin should be ?

  • If you're having the traditional DS, I'm afraid patches don't work. You might look into returning them and purchasing tablets or capsules (not gel caps as we don't absorb the oil).

  • You only have to take them separately when you supplement them along with multis. Multis are ok. I’m just referring to when you have to additionally supplement . You can take them with other vita

The following are the guidelines for Duodenal Switch patients from the office of the surgeon who performed my surgery:

* Four children's chewable complete multivitamin's daily.

* 1800-2400 mg calcium citrate daily.

* a total of 5000 international units of Vitamin D3 daily.

* 1000 micrograms of sublingual B12 weekly or a B12 injection monthly.

* 100 mg. Thiamin (Vitamin B1) weekly.

I take 1800 mg Calcium Citrate, 3 multivitamin ADEK, 30 mg Iron+C, and 5000 mg Biotin daily. My doctor recently suggested vitamin B1 once weekly.

Hello MzNatalia, your regimen seems identical to mine except for the B1. I may start taking that too. The doc said i could if I wanted to. I haven't had my blood work labs done yet for 6 month post op but they are coming up. Do you take the B1 once a week or one everyday?

The guidelines that I received 5 years ago from my surgeon was weekly for DS patients.

I am a RNY gastric bypass patient, and my guidelines were B1 daily. After the first year, my surgeons office modified my requirement to weekly.

As DSERS our Bs are quite often high without supplements.

Ugh! Well that's a real bummer but explains why there was no reviews from DS patients. Why don't the patches work for DS?

We just don't absorb them well. I know people who've tried vitamin patches. It's a no go. The DS is such a delicate balance to get things that work fo us . For instance, did you know that when/if you supplement Vit A it must be palmitol, retinol or acetate? No beta carotene. We don't absorb it well. Also, the Vit A must be by itself . By that I mean no combo Vit A and Vit D pills. They often come that way.

The Bariatric Advantage has a High ADEK Multi that is specifically for DS patients. You only have to take 2 capsules a day. I also take 45mg iron and 1800mg calcium. My bloodwork at 6 months out was perfect with this vitamin regimen. 1540413833547.jpeg1540413864719.jpeg
